Customer Reviews:
The writing gets very old very quickly........2005-09-20
This guide disappointed me on our trip to Istanbul. the pictures are good and it does provide a lot of useful information about the kinds of food available and the cultural food habits of the Turks. However, the writing is bad. If you don't mind bad writing, then buy the book. Here's a sample sentence:
"The Turkish version of the pizza parlour is a slice of heaven if you're after quick and tasty belly fuel".
On the next page, there is a reference to "a between meal carbo tweak" and then later, "McWhoppers", These phrases and made-up words get old quickly when you are trying to read more than a page or two at a time.
If this doesn't bother you, then by all means, buy this book. If it does, read up by checking out a Turkish cookbook and your guidebook (like LP's Istanbul guide).
I think the author was trying to have fun but it gets old quickly. Call me old-fashioned, but I think it is better to keep to words that are in the dictionary.
Very very good!!!.......2003-09-25
I have this book (a friend bought it for me from Amazon). It's quite good, detailed, with lots of great pictures. A definite must-buy for someone who wants to offer someting different to himself or his guests.
BTW, about the "Editorial review" : Swig of "raki"????!!! for everyone to know, "raki" is a traditional Greek drink (particularly coming from the Island of Crete-I should know I live on it), made by distilled grape juice every September to end of October. Turks took this drink and use it (while been in Greece for 400 years), but it's not traditional Turkish in any way... plus the fact that Turks are Islamists and thay are not supposed to drink... right???
'Word Food Turkey' wins runner-up award.......2001-04-04
March 9, 2001. It's official! WF-T earns runner-up spot for Andre Simon Award. Lonely Planet was one of five runner-up winners in the food section of the Andre Simon Memorial Fund 2000 Book Awards announced in London last night. Its winner was World Food Turkey - competing against the likes of Nigel Slater who was the (overall) winner with Real Food and Rick Stein's Seafood Lover's Guide. WFT was described by the panel as 'excellent' and 'groundbreaking' in its approach to food travel writing.

Nice but needs some help ..........2000-07-29
I really wanted to like this book especially since I purchased four others in the Lonely Planet Food Guide series in the same Amazon order. I gave it three stars because of the outstanding photography throughout which is hallmark of the Lonely Planet Travel Guides. There is a terrific section on shopping in the marketplaces and "where to eat".
Be prepared for British English and terminology, and for metric measures. Prepare to locate items such as 500g of drained vine leaves and 250g of puff pastry and convert measurements from a table on the back cover. Not difficult, just inconvenient.
But the most annoying aspect of this book was the writing. Frequently I would find myself having to read sentences two or three times to determine what was being conveyed. Such as the author's saying that the Turks "have been noodling for some time" (meaning making pasta) ... or describing losing one's appetite as a "tummy plummet". He describes baklava as the "swooniest sweet thang". Men were described as "blokes" or "mates" from time to time. Get ready for words like "groovy", "shebang", "squelchy", "munchies". Almost immediately I began to feel that the book was written by an adolescent. Note: A glance at the other four seemed to avoid the weak attempts at humor).
In fact, all of the Lonely Planet Food Guides have been written by people who have authored earlier Lonely Planet TRAVEL Guides and therein lies the problem in my opinion. I would love to see these compact, well photographed, affordable books written by a food professional who is intimately acquainted with the culture, history and people of the featured country.

Book Description
Albert Coombs Barnes, one of the most eccentric, controversial figures of the early twentieth-century art world, springs vividly from the pages of Howard Greenfeld's superb biography. The Devil and Dr. Barnes traces the near-mythical journey of a man who was born into poverty, amassed a fortune through the promotion of a popular medicine, and acquired the premier private collection of works by such masters as Renoir, Matisse, Cézanne, and Picasso.
Ostentatiously turning his back on the art establishment, Barnes challenged the aesthetic sensibilities of an uninitiated, often resistant and scoffing, American audience. In particular, he championed Matisse, Soutine, and Modigliani when they were obscure or in difficult straits. Analyzing what he saw as the formal relationships underlying all art, linking the old and the new, Barnes applied these principles in a rigorous course of study offered at his Merion foundation.
Barnes's own mordant words, culled from the copious printed record, animate the narrative throughout, as do accounts of his associations with notables of the era--Gertrude and Leo Stein, Bertrand Russell, and John Dewey among them--many of whom he alienated with his appetite for passionate, public feuds. In this rounded portrait, Albert Barnes emerges as a complex, flawed man, who--blessed with an astute eye for greatness--has left us an incomparable treasure, gathered in one place and unforgettable to all who have seen it.
Customer Reviews:
A vivid depiction of a remarkable life and is very highly recommended reading for art students and collectors.......2006-05-03
The Devil And Dr. Barnes: Portrait Of An American Art Collector by Howard Greenfeld is an extensive study of an eccentric man's defiant accomplishments in the creation of the his prestigious art collection obtained for the mere enjoyment of the imagery. Engaging its readers in the fascinating life of Albert Coombs Barnes, The Devil And Dr. Barnes provides readers with an engaging biography of a complex, passionate individual, his life and involvement with the art world, drawing upon accounts from Gertrude and Leo Stein, Berrtrand Russe, John Dewy and a great many more of his contemporaries. The Devil And Dr. Barnes is a vivid depiction of a remarkable life and is very highly recommended reading for art students and collectors.
Dr Barnes.......2005-01-20
I thoroughly enjoyed this book between hilarious episodes of unending laughter and looking at the picture of the author who could stand to compile all of this! This is not a detailed biography of Dr. Barnes but rather a focussed smear of all letters he wrote to people who agitated him. It seems if you left him alone, he was a nice person, but he defended himself and his art views when attacked. How reasonable! There is helpful information to a researcher but the author seriously fails to develop a thesis for all the material he gathered. For instance, noting that Charles Laughton was a frequent house guest and not commenting on what Elsa Lancaster had to say about him. Not putting the photographs in context with the times and story, as most of the ones provided were posed or journalistic productions. No original theories to solve any mysteries were proposed and no, absolutely NO references to fine art or how any of these controveries documented in era correspondence affected, for example, Matisse's development of the mural in the lobby, or how many Soutine's were purchased, or the specific focus of the Renoir collection. All of this is non-existent in this book, which makes this book useful only to someone who is interested in character assassination of philanthropists and who like a good laugh at the expense of other people's immaturity and lack of emotional development in cricital areas.

Terrific!.......2003-09-06
I love this book! The introduction starts with "Lessons from a Garden" and here the author tells of a forest near their home that they enjoyed for years that was bulldozed for "development." They then began rebuilding the habitat around their home and developed a sanctuary. I love the attention to the use of native plants, the discussion of soil (easy to understand, not too techy), and the specific chapters on things like attracting animals, benign pest control, and specific gardens/habitats that you can establish (wetlands included). Nice drawings that help pull things together and some color photos and B/W photos. The writing is wonderful! I highly recommend this one.
Wildlife Sanctuary Garden.......2000-07-20
I found the Wildlife Sanctuary Garden very well written and informative. Many clear instructions on creating the perfect backyard garden for many different home styles. Great illustrations.
A how-to for the amateur or knowledgable gardener.......1999-09-30
This guide is useful whether you are just beginning to garden or have been gardening for years. Buchanan's suggestions for water gardens within the greater garden are brilliant and easy to follow and install. Her personal anectdotes add greatly to the pleasure of this book which is, incidentally, well-written and very readable.

Tons of Info!!.......2003-02-24
I am a HUGE fan of Ewan McGregor, and this book really gives u the lowdown on this star. This book, although lacking in pictures compared to "ewan mcgregor-from junkie to jedi" makes up in it's writing. It is really written to keep u interested and puts the good and the bad in, which is important. Excellent book!
A brilliant read.......1999-08-19
This is a great book for anybody serious about undertsanding mcgregor. It's really well reserached and has plenty of funny stories about his life. A cracking read.
I'm guessing it's a good book........1999-06-09

Customer Reviews:
An interesting little book........1999-10-15
I'm enjoying this book but find that it's a bit too short and because it's written by an American author it has a US slant on it (e.g box office takings of films are all in dollars and release dates are different too). Otherwise, I find the little snippets of fun information about the films he's worked on very interesting.
A very good and interesting book.......1999-07-12
This is a really good book. It's very informative. Not only does it give information about Ewan but also about his movies which is nice when trying to convince one's mother to let them see a movie. It wasn't written in American english but not hard to read. It was a good book.
Not Bad.......1999-07-04
This is an awesome book with a lot of info for a small book. The draw back is the begining is hard to get into, the lack of photos and that fact that they're black and white, and that it's more about McGregor's movies, etc. instead of McGregor himself. Not great, not bad, but lots of info.
He is Hot.......1999-06-02
The book is good, but it isn't in American english so it can be a little funny, I wouldn't do a book reort on it ether it was hard.

Customer Reviews:
Another hoax?.......2007-01-02
I came across this book after I had seen the movie and was delighted to find a comprehensive account of the truth behind the legend. Unfortunately, the lack of citation and frequent embellishment of the "diary" makes the reader only vaguely aware of an element of truth. The diary portions are very readable and enjoyable. However, without knowing which parts are real and which parts are embellishments, any true historical value is lost. In fact, the authors do not even give a list of sources used for any further research. The exact copies of a few newspaper articles are historically helpful, but these are the only elements that can point to any "real" story of Caraboo. The title "The Real Story of the Grand Hoax", is truly odd since the authors do not separate the "real" portions from their "probable" portions, which actually perpetuates Caraboo's original hoax.
AMAZING.......2005-10-25
This was honestly one of the most fascinating books I have ever read - Ms. Worral's journal is an amazing account of what she went through, as well as what it was like to live an upper class woman's life during that time. And Princess Caraboo is possibly one of the most fascinating characters from history.
