    5 out of 5 stars Invaluable.......2006-11-16

I'd like to echo Language Nut's praises of this book. For in-hand, pocketable street guides, Moon Metro London is second to none. Our brief trip to London recently was a breeze as I was able to carry this in my pocket and pull out when necessary, without looking like an obvious tourist.

Each district map is detailed enough for walking around the city, and allows you to check where you are without unfolding a 5' by 5' paper map of the entire city.

While it did cover the major sights and locales of London, I would suggest using a more detailed guide book for planning purposes. This one was fantastic for taking with you to navigate the city, but prior to the trip you will likely want a more exhaustive guide to the city.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, great maps.......2004-12-23

This slim 120 page London guide was wonderful for out trip to London. This year I have ordered the Paris guide for out trip there. Each London "neighborhood" (distict section of the city) is briefly covered for conviences and highlights (i.e. hotels, restaurants, amusements, shops and sights) and then fold out into a wonderful laminated street map of the area. The book also contains a section with one page devoted to each major "sight"; and sections on restaurants, shops, city essentials and a street index. A color coded metro is also included at the back of the book. Invaluable book: the most useful that found while in London.

              Book Description

Some of this unusual volume's accounts are ghostly, others are heartwarming, and all are about animals that possess mysterious, unexplained powers. Told here are moving stories of animals whose timely premonitions saved their owners' lives, as well as tales of un-breakable bonds between animals and humans that transcend distance and time. Many pet owners marvel at how their dog or cat seems to anticipate its master's arrival home, or know precisely when it's time for a meal or a walk. Describing more unusual examples, the author tells, for instance, how a cat sent her owner a telepathic message to rescue her from a garbage dump. Here too is the story of how a barking retriever aroused a diplo-matic staff in China, coaxing them to safety only moments before a devastating earth-quake leveled their building. Other fascinating stories tell of the U.S. Army's attempts to train psychic dogs, fish that rained down from a cloudless sky, and a "mind-reading" pig that astonished Victorian England. The author narrates these and dozens more amazing, true, animal-related stories that modern science is at a loss explain. More than 200 color illustrations.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    5 out of 5 stars A Phenomenal Read!!!.......2007-07-09

I could not put the book, "Conversations With Brando," down once I began reading it. As a Marlon Brando devotee, I was so very pleased to open the book and find that the largest part of the book is composed of Marlon Brando's own words. I could have listened to this man talk all day long, every day of every week. And, in this book, he is at his incredible best -interesting, intelligent, witty, sensitive, idealistic, real, wise, inspirational, poignant, reflective, philosophical, poetic; humanitarian. I love his eccentric ways and I respect his principles of character - standing up for the causes of the voiceless in the world. I appreciate that he bowed to no one when the convictions of his heart and his conscience were at stake.

Most of all, when Marlon's children were in trouble, he made the kinds of sacrifices and suffered in ways that only a father whose children are his whole heart would have done.

What a beautiful man Marlon was and what an exemplary, praiseworthy piece of work Lawrence Grobel has done with "Conversations With Brando."

                    4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2001-04-27

This expanded on the PLAYBOY interview it's adapted from. Brando is a good storyteller, and tells some good stories in here. Grobel does preface the interview with phone call transcripts of him talking to Brando, and his secretary. And I know someone close to Brando, and some in the Brando camp felt some annoyance that Grobel taped the phone conversations without saying they were being taped. A bit presumptuous. But an interesting interview nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars As complicated & brilliant as its subject.......2000-08-23

The interview that this book is based on was conducted before Brando filmed "Superman" but I can't imagine that Brando has changed much since. Grobel shows his skills as an interviewer by originally agreeing to only talk about the Native American cause with Brando but eventually teasing out anecdotes about acting, sex, stalkers, Brando's upbringing and much more. Grobel does not try to outsmart Brando, even while he is trying to sneak in forbidden acting/movie questions. He faces his subject head-on and when Brando chooses to speak about his hated profession, he is extremely entertaining. He shows Brando as a very complicated man who is hard to dislike - even if you don't agree with his politics, you come away from the book thinking that Brando is a charming, intelligent, thoughtful and super-talented individual who deserves all the praise for his acting skills. This interview could be considered his greatest performance - it comes from the same honesty that he invested his early screen and stage characters with.

An argument could be made on which of the two is stranger and more exciting, mysterious, terrifying and eclectic—the reel adventures of movie star Ingrid Pitt or the real life adventures of daughter, wife, mother and new grandmother Ingrid Pitt.

Ingrid Pitt: Darkness Before Dawn will help you find an answer to that argument as you follow the life story of the amazing Ingrid—from the terror-filled years in a Concentration Camp, hardships after the war, breaking into acting, becoming a wife and mother, world-wide adventures, making movies, writing and theatre. This memoir of a life filled with terror and tears and ultimately joy and laughter will paint a picture of Ingrid Pitt you will not soon forget.

Closing in 1981 with the deaths of ten Irish Republican Army hunger strikers in Long Kesh prison, the author chronicles the years before he became president of Sinn Fein, the I.R.A.'s political wing. Wrenching accounts of the hunger strike and of the 1969 riots in Northern Ireland that turned a 20-year-old bartender into an activist are counterbalanced by the warmth with which Adams portrays his family and comrades, the atmospheric precision with which he evokes the sights and sounds of his West Belfast community. Not the whole truth by any means, but a compelling partisan document.

                          Book Description

Gerry Adams has been at the forefront of Northern Ireland's struggle for nearly three decades, taking leadership positions and guiding his country in negotiating peace talks with England for the first time in their tumultuous history. Now, in Before the Dawn, Adams recounts his years growing up in the Irish countryside and, with startling detail, his early involvement in the IRA.Adams includes engaging stories of his boyhood and never-before-told family tales. His description of his critical role in Northern Ireland's violent and dramatic revolutionary period will haunt and intrigue readers. Ireland instills the strongest of emotions in her offspring, and Adams is no exception. Lyrical and riveting, Before the Dawn, explores the origins of one of this century's most compelling men.

5 out of 5 stars Artist of Peace.......2003-11-03

Much is known of Gerry Adams, statesman, man of peace, friend of the stars. Less well known perhaps is Adams the artist. Adams is perhaps best known for not being a member of the IRA, and yet so vivid are his descriptions of the IRA's struggle against violence, that it is almost as if he were there in the room as they deliberated. The book comes at a crucial juncture, and reminds us that all that peace does not just happen, but must be seized. No man is better placed to truly take that peace.

                          5 out of 5 stars An honest,brave writer........2001-11-16

The beginning of this book is a magical tale of childhood, where his and his brothers biggest worry was how to get past mother with a scraped knee!
The book however then develops in to the true tragedy that befalls every Irish Catholic living in the facist unionists power that refuse to be labelled "dirty Irish" or second class.
Accounts of a struggle like this are almost always biased but this is a fair, real account of what HAPPENED.It's always been hard for English or unionists or anti-republicans to swallow the fact that their beloved beliefs caused the violation of almost every human right there is.England and it's people have always been classed or rather classed themselves as a civilised people even though history shows a story of a power grabbing, colonising, nation raping race. They have always stolen land so it's not just a plight of the Irish here making up stories.
(...) Well done Gerry.A truly fantastic read, whether a follower of any politics.

1 out of 5 stars Justifying terrorism and murder.......2001-01-01

I find the argument set forth in this book extremely offensive. The author was himself intrinsically involved in organising and carrying out a campaign of murder during the early 1970s, and here he attempts its justification through an exaggerated description of past grievances.

Firstly, that part of Ireland, which seeks freedom, has had independence for the past 80 years. 58% of those living in N.Ireland want to remain part of the UK. For all his talk of freedom Mr. Adams (a convicted terrorist himself) refuses to recognise the most fundamental principle of democracy: majority rule.

Also, the human rights issues at the heart of the argument, have now been dealt with: all UK citizens now have equal rights and opportunities. History does not justify murder. Rather than having a keen sense of history, Adams has a keen sense of sectarian hatred, which he christens history, in order to make legitimate a terrorist organisation, of which he is now leader. If stories concerning falling out of helecopters arouse your sympathy, compare the authors injuries to those of his many victims.

The sufferings of those involved in the 1980 hunger strikes, although tragic, was entirely self-inflicted. A man commits murder. So he is sentenced to life imprisonment. Fair? Of course. Adams makes use of their plight and this semi-achedemic text to arouse sympathy from oversees, to generate funds (from the US in particular), to further his cause. Suffice to say, many of Adam's heroes would have been executed had they been tried under US law.

4 out of 5 stars Good History Lesson.......2000-04-20

Gerry Adams has set out to write an autobiography. In the process, he has accomplished also writing a history book. This book demonstrates and details the life of a man who questions the systems justices and dares to speak out against those who would oppress his people. The life he has described (being on the run, being locked up in the Kesh, etc) could be used to describe the lives of the countless dissidents who take a stand for nationalism everyday. As an Irishman who does not support Sinn Fein (Adams' Political Party) or the so called Belfast Agreement, I still have respect for the accomplishments Adams made to the movement in the important 1969-1996 years. To those who would label the likes of Adams a terrorist, I remind them that he is no more a terrorist than George Washington or Thomas Jefferson would have been during the American Revolution for Independence. It has been said, "One man's terrorist, is another man's freedom fighter." Only history will show which he will be remembered for.

4 out of 5 stars Biased? Of course. A good read? Definitely........1999-10-26

It's hard to write a review of this book without taking sides. When I got back from a trip to Ireland this past August (I stayed in County Tyrone in the North with relatives of my mom's), I started to read a lot about the politics of the North. This was one of the books I read. "Before the Dawn" is a relatively quick read, but it will not provide one with the overall historical background behind the Troubles (the conflict goes back hundreds of years starting with the Potato Famine of 1845-49, and even earlier than that). However, Adams does describe in great detail the British Army raids during times of Internment, the torture that internees had to endure (how would you like it if someone blindfolded you, made you walk across glass and nails and such while beating you and then put you on a helicopter, and then pushed you off, not knowing if you were a mere 8 feet off the ground or several hundered?). For a more balanced view of the Troubles, try reading John Conroy's "Belfast Diary". Conroy is an American journalist who spent 1977-82 in West Belfast. It's also a very gritty, steet-level account. As for the IRA's kneecappings, it should be noted that most locals did approve of them, because Catholics felt they couln't go to the British RUC.

                              Book Description

Douglas a 60's navy veteran and blue-collar worker now retired brings to life another personal story in The Darkness Before The Dawn. Written with honesty, humor, and faith it deals with his unexpected illness with colon cancer, which developed into other underlying issues.

Douglas has a second book of poems combined with this book titled In My Footsteps/Poems To Inspire. These poems written during his convalescence inspired him to write The Darkness Before The Dawn. Douglas' first book Two Stepped Out For Him published in August 2005, brought to life a personal spiritual call that led he and his wife Joan on a five year quest filled with unexpected surprises, trials, and friendships.

                              4 out of 5 stars Why hate?.......2004-01-17

In her first published work, JUST BEFORE DAWN, Stacy Anderson has provided a treat for readers. She has included a short story and several poems from her repertoire. In the short story, we are transported back to the late 1940's through the eyes of Rena, a young black girl growing up in Centerville, Georgia. We learn the hardships African American suffered at the hands of hatred and bigotry. Rena witnesses many of the atrocities Blacks suffered as a result of the old Jim Crow Laws. She lived during a time when a black man had to walk with his head down for fear of being accused of inappropriately looking at a white woman. The very same hate killed her father and husband caused her to suffer indignities as a young black woman growing up.

The poetry collection catalogues an eight-year period of Ms. Anderson's life entitled "My Awakening." She divided the collection into sections that identify three distinct phases of her life. The first phase is Black identity, the second phase is the Love and the third phase is titled My Spiritual Walk. Surprisingly, each phase also seems to symbolize Rena's growth in the short story. There is the awakening to what it means to be Black, the realization that not having a man doesn't mean you're less than a woman and finally through it all, a personal relationship with God brings us through all things good and bad.

Stacy Anderson has penned a rather moving short story about a young woman's coming of age as she witnesses the pain and suffering of African Americans through a very tough era in our history and how she overcame it all to live a loving, productive life. Anderson has eloquently written poetry that depicts her struggles as a woman. My favorite poem from the collection is "Spirituality."
