easy book with easy categories so you can work out what the flower is by its shape. has colour drawings which help, and gives all the names, local as well. some of the wild flowers turn out to be ones we buy and plant ie. not so wild. Very useful when you come across a plant and can't think what it is.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the money.......2005-08-31

PLEASE NOTE: THERE are NOT 170 hikes in the book. The whole series must contain that many.

I own 3 books in this series. The Southern Appalachian, the Virginias, and the Mid-Atlantic States guide. I have found these books to be a great aid in planning hikes, especially 2-3 day backpacking trips. Since most of these hikes are either one-way or round trip (as opposed to circuit hikes) you either need to have two cars or plan on seeing the same sites twice. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but other books have better circuit hikes.

This series IS very informative, not only with regards to the actually hike, but also the history both natural and otherwise of the area you are hiking in.

I have not used this edition as much as I have the other 2 guides that I own in this series, but it did come in handy during a spur of the moment trip to NC/TENN. The maps could be a little better, as they are topographical maps with a green line for the trail.. They are adequate, but I've seen better.

All 45 hikes come with a description, a map, an elevation profile, and an itinerary, as well as various other information.

When planning for a hike I do tend to use this book in conjunction with other books, but I usually take this book (or copies of the pages) on the actual hike itself. The fact that the pages are so small allows for easier handling and storage of the laminated pages during the trip.

So if you enjoy hiking and are near the AT while in the 'Southern Appalchians', you may want to take a look at this book. It is well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Exploring The Appalachian Trail: Georgia, North Carolina, Te.......2002-10-28

I checked this book out of my local library and found it to be the most informative book on the AT. The sections of the AT that I have personally hiked were very well covered in this book.It is very difficult to find accurate maps with tons of land marks and information the terrain. As well as a well thought out itinerary so you may better gauge your time and enjoy the trail, rather than worrying about where you are going to find water and shelter. So now I'm on amazon.com to buy this book to use on my next visit to the AT.

3 out of 5 stars not for the out of stater.......2002-05-03

I'm probably spoiled by the AMC guides for New England, but I found this book to be somewhat uninvting and lacking in some key areas. The maps weren't all that great they clearly aren't for a guy from the north east who's trying to find his way through the red dirt maze that is North Georgia. Directions to the trailheads could be markedly improved, as some (particularly the ones I used) use forest service roads that park rangers (let alone easily purchased maps) don't know well.

The copy and descriptions are good once I got to the trailhead, and organized linearly along the trail. I really enjoyed the plots of trail elevation over distance.

4 out of 5 stars A guide beyond the day hiker.......2000-09-25

I used this book to plan my first trip to the AT with a group of Boy Scouts. It was extremely useful in selecting my route. Especially useful was the trail summary in the beginning of each chapter. Also equally useful was the hike itinerary, giving distances between significant points. I found, however, the linear trail profile to be slightly misleading on a few sections of the trail. (More useful was the profile found in The Appalachian Trail Official Map from the Appalachian Trail conference.) This day hike book was perfect for my 5 day trip because each hike begins where the other left off. This was vital in my planning and I would highly recommend it for anyone needing a detailed description of the trail. Oh, and don't forget your hand lens. :)

4 out of 5 stars Finally, planning a day hike is EASY..........2000-06-25

If you're planning to hike a small day or two-day section of the Appalachian trail in or around NC, this is the book for you. I wanted to hike a small section of the trail, but I only had two days and had to finish at a very specific point. I used the book to help me plan the hike and it was amazingly easy; none of the obstacles I expected caused problems. The hike went off without a hitch, thanks to the brilliantly organized hiking guide. Aside from the planning aspect, the topographical maps were priceless along the trail. I considered doing the hike without a planning book, but I'm thankful that I used such a quality source.

This packet will be very useful on our journey on the AT. The maps are waterproof and very detailed with shelters, mileage, and altitude. The book itself contains everything we needed to know about each section of the trail and allowed us to choose which sections we deemed most inviting.

      Book Description

Enriched by Cherokee voices, this guidebook offers a unique journey into the lands and culture of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in the mountains of North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. Every year millions of tourists visit these mountains, drawn by the region's great natural beauty and diverse cultural traditions. Many popular aspects of Cherokee culture are readily apparent. Beneath the surface, however, lies a deeper Cherokee heritage--rooted in sacred places, community ties, storytelling, folk arts, and centuries of history.

Cherokee Heritage Trails Guidebook is your introduction to this vibrant world. The book is organized around seven geographical hubs or communities within the original Cherokee homeland. Each chapter covers sites, side trips, scenic drives, and events. Cherokee stories, history, poems, and philosophy enrich the text and reveal the imagination of Cherokees past and present.

The Museum of the Cherokee Indian in Cherokee, North Carolina, is the main interpretive center for the Cherokee Heritage Trails. Among the many other featured sites are Kituhwa Mound, origin of the mother town of the Cherokee; Junaluska Memorial and Museum, with a preserved gravesite and medicine plant trail; and Unicoi Turnpike Trail, part of the Trail of Tears and one of sixteen national millennium trails in the United States.

The Cherokee Heritage Trails are a project of the Blue Ridge Heritage Initiative and its partners, the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, the North Carolina Arts Council, the Tennessee Overhill Heritage Association, the North Carolina Folklife Institute, the Tennessee Arts Commission, and the Blue Ridge Parkway Division of the National Park Service.

                                Book Description

One of the most important aspects of garden design has always been the relationship between a garden and its surrounding landscape. Gardens Without Boundaries looks at the ways in which today’s leading garden and landscape designers have concealed boundaries, disguised edges, or brought “nature” up to the house, in order to link private gardens to the wider terrain beyond. It is a comprehensive work that not only challenges preconceptions of contemporary garden design, but provides fresh ideas and inspiration to garden owners everywhere.

                                          Description:
Legal spaces are said to be a crucial materialization of law, serving to communicate legal meaning and, in so doing, helping to produce a liberal-legal consciousness. Given its centrality to legal ordering and liberal ideology, the spatial manifestation of the public-private divide, especially when related to property, would appear to be particularly important in this regard. Public and private are assumed to be both mutually exclusive and exhaustive. Drawing upon empirical research conducted in a neighbourhood in Vancouver, Canada, I argue that spatial and legal categories such as public and private may be more fluid than one might suppose. While the public/private divide is clearly powerful, and informs much policy and governmental action, it is not necessarily the case that it has the purchase on everyday life that some scholars have suggested. People may live in more complicated and overlapping worlds when it comes to supposedly determinate categories such as property.

This my may not be the best book you will ever read, but if you're interested in information about Arnold, this is not a bad choice. The author mentions all the obstacles he had in writing this book and does not try to make it seem like it is an authorized biography in any way. He does give you a look at Arnold without the childish self-promoting efforts that Arnold's autobiography seems to try. This is a fun book, with a slight edge to it like you're reading something that might have been printed in a tabloid were it not printed in a book. You can almost feel like you are sneeking around with the author trying to find out information about Arnold that is not some sort of publicity stunt. It might not be the most fair look at Arnold, but then again neither is Arnold's autobiography. I think the real story might be found somewhere in between the two books.

4 out of 5 stars Not very easy to read but has alot of information........2004-08-04

Although the book is not that flattering for Arnold its not that bad either. I stopped following his career in the early 90's and it has alot of information about him since then. Most of the information about his career early on and into the 80's I already knew but had more detail than in previous material I had read.

3 out of 5 stars No that Interesting.......2004-04-08

Andrews has no access to Arnold, and minimal time with the A-man's associates. So he does what he can, showing an Arnold with the midas touch who sets a goal, goes for it, and gets it. (Like in his pre-success 70's, saying he would marry into a powerful American family, and later "sweeping Maria Shriver off her feet"). Andrews is rarely negative, and praises Arnold's films more than most critics, for sure. The only "criticism" is a very minimal handful of he said he/she said comments from former co-workers... and Andrews' frustrations with his lack of access. With so little input, Andrews espouses cultural meaning to Arnold's work that may not, or may, exist. For example, Andrews may read more political ambition into Arnold's work than is really there... or, he is amazingly prescient. The book was published in 1995, yet Andrews projects - seriously - Arnold as Governor and U.S. President (post new Ammendment that would allow foreign borns to serve). In my humble opinion... Andrews gives too much cultural/political weight to Arnold's art. (Maybe my bias -- I buy into a lot of political interpretation to Warren Beatty's work... see book recommendation below). On page 195, Andrews describes Arnold's expansion from his 80's Reaganesque tough guy films:

Kindergarten Cop hints at the healing age of peacemaking with Russia and at President Bush's 'new world order'. The sentimental subplots about children reaching entente with divorced parents adumbrate both the messianic geo-political accords that had taken place under Reagan and the family values mandates that had issued from his and Bush's White House.

                                                  Uhhhhhh?

Ultimately, despite the potentially great material that is Arnold, I didn't find the book that interesting. Maybe there is something incongruous about a British intellectual like Andrews writing about a man of action like Arnold. The writing style lacks a certain muscle and speed (or even controversy :-)... to reflect Arnold's style.

                                                  Books I like more:

Arnold is a true Idol, a star, a person someone wants to be. This guy makes Arnold out to be a pure bonified *%*$*@*...I do not believe the bullcrap from this book at all...

                                                  5 out of 5 stars Great Book........2004-01-17

Great Book. Takes an honest look at the real life "Arnold Schwarzenegger". It may take the magic out of the man for some , but it puts a human face on one of the greatest personalities of our times. The book points out that, like all of us, Arnold has his imperfections, but through sheer will and a fanatical determination to succeed, he pulled himself up by his boot straps and propelled himself to success. An absolute "MUST READ" for all true Arnold fans.
