Did you know Confederate General George Pickett was sent to West Point in 1842 by Congressman Abraham Lincoln of Illinois? Or, were you aware of the fact that Union General George B. McClellan and Confederate Brigadier General A.P. Hill were friends, roomates even, at the Point? Through crushing twists of fate, the two soldiers not only became rivals on the battlefield, but were thrown into conflict over a love interest as well. A few years after their graduation, each man fought for the heart and hand of Miss Nelly Marcy, whose father was a Union army officer that eventually served under McClellan during the North/South conflict. George Armstrong Custer was a wild cat in his cadet years at West Point. The hard-headed Ohio youth talked in the ranks, played forbidden card games, and threw snowballs at passing columns. Each year he came close to earning 200 demerits, the fatal number which ended a cadet's West Point career and sent him home in disgrace, but Custer always managed to stop short of the nasty little number. I can't say enough about this book, I have seen many dog books but this one is the best by far because it has everything you could need to know. I expecially lov eth what to do in an emergency section. It saved my dogs life! The training section is great because it has several ways to do things. This is the best book you can get, if you get no other book get this one, for your puppys sake.

This is an EXCEPTIONAL resource that stacks up to a mountain of other books, videos, and friendly advice from just about everyone.
Before buying this book (on impulse during a pre-adoption "scouting mission" for equipment at a local pet store), I'd already acquired a half-dozen dog books, and as many videos (along with umpteen recordings of dog training shows on Animal Planet). I was not feeling the slightest need for another resource on how to raise our new dog. Until this very thorough work caught my eye.
This book is superbly clear, well organized, and visually entertaining. It trumps everything else in my substantial library of resources. (Okay, okay. Yes, I was afraid I'd screw up the little wonder's life -- and mine in the process.)
Ms. Palika addresses virtually every conceivable issue clearly and directly. Her well-crafted advice is presented in a very appealing, inviting format that has become the publisher's trademark.
The book's Table of Contents and index make quickly accessing vital information fast and easy in this well-structured handbook. Not only will you easily find what you're looking for, you'll get specific, understandable, definitive guidance when you land there.

I bought this book yesterday 7/1/04 and I bought it much higher at a pet store and it's worth EVERY penny! This book is OUTSTANDING! It's so simple to read and understand. It has gorgeous color pictures of REAL dogs and no cartoon pictures. It's so easy to read and understand. The pages are beautiful the information is fabulous. If you are getting a new puppy please BUY this book you will NOT be dissapointed. It covers everything from Do you really want a puppy? Down to why do puppies do that? It's a must have! I am picking up my puppy today and will have this book in my hand all the way to the checkout counter!

If you are thinking about buying a new puppy, this is an excellent resource. If you walk past a pet store and see a cute puppy, you might want to read this book first. There are excellent ideas like bringing a puppy home on a day when you will be home the next day or maybe for the weekend.
Puppy proofing a house is also a great idea. Especially since "chewing on everything" is an expression of basic canine hunting instincts. Do you have a baby gate? You might want to buy one. There are grooming supplies, cleaning supplies and toys to think about. I had never considered the danger of electric cords. You mean they chew on those too? Yikes.
This book was truly enlightening. For example, you should not buy a puppy that is not at least 9 weeks old because there is a "critical fear" period in which puppies who are frightened for any reason will become a lifelong fear. Even a car ride or a trip to the Vet could make them afraid of Vet visits and car rides.

So You Want a Puppy - Are you ready for a new puppy? How to decide on the type of dog you want to own. There are more than 400 dog breeds to choose from. There is also information on the types of breeds that require more frequent grooming. Do you want an active breed like a Shih Tzu or a laid-back breed like a Golden Retriever.
Bringing Home Your New Best Friend - All the essentials. What you should do before bringing a new puppy home and how to set household rules, prepare for housetraining and the essential first 24 hours. Do you have any poisonous plants in your yard? Is your fence secure enough to prevent escapes? How do you housetrain? Some great ideas about "not using newspapers" because apparently this is a bad idea in the long run!
Your Puppy's Health - Everything from the first visit to the vet to what your puppy should eat. Also helpful information for emergencies. There is a lot to think about in this chapter including vaccinations, spaying and neutering.
How to Train Your Puppy - Interesting tips on how to be your puppy's teacher. How you can use training to avoid trouble. If you don't want your puppy to chew on his leash, you can simply dip it in vinegar. There are simple ways to show your puppy you are the leader of the pack. Liz Palika also gives "Ten Simple Principles for Successful Training." You start with the basics and then work your way into "boundary training."
More to Do... and Learn - What are the beset games and toys? Also a section on "Why Does My Puppy do That?" You will find out some creative ways to get a puppy to stop barking.
If you are trying to decide between owning a cat or a dog, this book will defiantly help you see if you are a "cat OR dog" person. You might be both.
KISS books have so many great extras and pictures. You will find Trivia, definitions and website addresses. The pictures in this KISS book are especially cute.

puppy readiness 101.......2003-03-19
This is an excellent book for someone thinking of bringing a puppy into the home. A realistic and helpful guide this is different from the Idiot's and Dummmies series in that it is much easier to leaf through. The color coded sections make it easy to flip to a section you need and the pictures are awsome (as with any dk book!) Liz Palika's advice and knowledge are excellent and I know I feel better armed for puppy rearing with this book on my shelf.

I've had dogs for over 20 years, but still use this book as a "refresher." It covers everything you need to know about bringing home a puppy -- choosing, preparing, feeding, health, grooming, even first aid. Also has some great basic training. All in an easy-to-read, visually-pleasing format. (Look into Andrea Arden's books for more training guidance!)

HE'S NUMBER 2 MAN IS KEN GALLACHER ONE OF MY 3 BEST FRIENDS IN THE WORLD AND HAS A CHAPTER ABOUT HIM IN THIS BOOK. KEN GOT CHUCK TO SIGN THE BOOK AS WELL AS HIMSELF. "Against All Odds" is an inspirational and very enjoyable book! It's full of many interesting stories and therefore, it's very easy to read. Chuck Norris' story is motivation to everyone to set goals, visualize the goals and work hard to achieve them. His career makes for a great story, especially hearing about his supportive mother who always told him: "God has plans for you". She was right! The book is full of many celebrity stories, too! From Bruce Lee to Johnny Carson to Bob Barker and Steve McQueen. I wish the book was longer. I hated to see it end. Also, Chuck shares his religious beliefs and his wonderful marriage and children. I have written down his quote: "Positive thinking gets positive results and negative thinking gets negative results". Chuck Norris is a very positive and inspiring person! I highly recommend this great book! You'll love it!

Great bio. I usually don't read bios, but made an exception for Chuck Norris and for Barry Manilow. Also read Doreen Virtue's bio because it was included in one of her angel books.
That said, Chuck's bio is about overcoming obstacles and helping to make the world a better place. I wanted to read his story because I have always liked his movies and got really into the "Walker Texas Ranger" series. I really liked the positive aspects and messages, and the included spiritualism, in the series. I also liked the way the show included respect for and appreciation of the path and knowledge of the American Indian.
Chuck's bio was very interesting and uplifting and included his beginnings through the fairly current times. There are also old through current photos. It's great to read about a celeb that has his head on straight when you see so much tabloid stuff in the supermarkets. It's also great to read about somebody who moves forward in a positive manner to 1)accomplish things, and 2)help others. (No, I don't buy the tabloids anymore, but you cannot help to see the headlines when you're in line to buy your crabmeat in Maryland.)In my opinion, celebs have a big responsibility to the people who look to them as role models, especially the younger people. I am always happy to see a celeb show a positive image to those who would be influenced by him/her.

I find Chuck Norris's story amazing because no matter what anyone else said he worked towards and achieved his goals. An interesting concept of this is how he always shows respect and a smile on his face to everyone he meets, even people who scower at him.
He does this because its a proven fact that if you fight someone's negative attitude with more negativity, nothing will get solved and most likely there will be arguments or maybe even fights. This is one of the many lessons you can learn out of this book, go buy it today. I knew I could learn something out of it and I have learned a lot. I'm glad I bought this book.

Chuck Norris is undoubtedly a stright shooter of high moral character.
It would have been more interesting if he had gone into more detail about his life from childhood to when he started with the martial arts. Bottom line, I did enjoy the book.

This is the story of Chuck Norris. I really enjoyed it and wish everyone would read it. Many know that Chuck was a 6 time undefeated professional world champion of Karate. Many have seem the movies he has made. Most people have seen his TV series, "Walker, Texas Ranger." But other than that we know little of who he really is. Chuck Norris is one of the more down to earth Hollywood types who has had his share of ups and downs.
His story chronicles his life and shows how he dealt with the things that have faced him and his family. Like all of us, he has failed at times. Like all of us, he wishes that he had done somethings differently.
Chucks faith in Christ is evident throughout the book. Yet he doesn't hammer us with it. Many of the projects that were started through Chuck's desire to help people are a direct result of his faith in Christ.
"Against All Odds: My Story," by Chuck Norris is a very engaging book that you will enjoy and find hard to put it down.

Inspired by Voltaire's two-year stay in England (1726-8), this is one of the key works of the Enlightment. Exactly contemporary with Gulliver's Travels and The Beggar's Opera, Voltaire's controversial pronouncements on politics, philosophy, religion, and literature have place the Letters among the great Augustan satires. Voltaire wrote most of the book in English, in which he was fluent and witty, and it fast became a bestseller in Britain. He re-wrote it in French as the Lettres philosophiques, and current editions in English translate his French. This edition restores for the modern reader Voltaire's own English text, allowing us to appreciate him as a stylist at first hand. It is the only critical edition of the original text and, as well as providing an introduction and notes, it includes intriguing accounts of Voltaire by contemporary English ovservers.

For those who can take A LOT of Voltaire........2002-02-15
Before this 1994 Oxford University Press Edition, ENGLISH-language Readers of Voltaire's famous Book had to make do with Translations from the FRENCH 'Lettres Philosophiques'. Voltaire, however, began writing the Book during his two and a half year stay in ENGLAND, and wrote over half the Letters in ENGLISH. This first critical Edition of the 'Letters' in ENGLISH (the remaining eight Letters are presented in contemporary Translation) are immediately more fresh, more witty, more pointed, more fluid, more Voltairean, than the pallid Translations of other Editions on offer, and, with their characteristic 18th century Spelling (e.g. today's words ending in 'c' ending in 'k', like 'Publick') and Orthography (Nouns capitalised, proper Nouns italicised), give one the pleasurable Feeling of reading a Contemporary of Swift's or Pope's.
Anyone hoping for a Bill Bryson-like Travelogue into the Manners and distinctive Details of the ENGLISH, or a FRENCH 'Gulliver's Travels', will be disappointed. The 'Letters' are a Travelogue of Enlightenment Ideas, and can be divided into three Sections - Religion (Voltaire celebrating the Tolerance of many Religions in ENGLAND compared to the Catholic Tyranny in FRANCE); Philosophy/Science (offering a breathless Digest of exciting new Theories and Discoveries by Locke and Newton), and Literature (decrying the barbarous Irregularities of English theatre compared to the coolly classical French, but praising the occasional poetic Vividness and greater dramatic Force of Shakespeare - how nice of him!). Voltaire often distorts political Conditions in ENGLAND (e.g. the economic Persecution of Catholics) to extol the Country as a Beacon of Liberty.
Although Voltaire writes ENGLISH very well (considering he had only begun learning it the Year before commencing the 'Letters'), his Language lacks the satiric Bite and linguistic Inventiveness of a Swift or Gay, and so feels comparitively thin. Although there is a complex Irony working throughout, with the 'I' of the fictional Letter-Writer shifting functions (satirical, explanatory etc.) depending on the Subject, the most enjoyable Parts are those most straightforwardly polemical, such as the Attack on Reactionaries hostile to the Growth of Science, or the refreshingly irreverant Approach to the Bard.
How you enjoy these Letters depends on how much Voltaire you can take. His brave Attacks on Intolerance, Fanaticism and Absolutism can never be forgotten, and his Advocacy of the actively Intellectual over the submissively Superstitious was crucial in developing the modern Era; but his relentless Promotion of Reason can itself appear intolerant, shortsighted and incapable of dealing with more inexplicable Mysteries. He mocks the Ancients' philosophical and scientific Errors, asserting the linear Progress of History and human Endeavour, assuming, as did those ancients, that his Age has got everything right. The 25th Letter exposes the limits and inflexibility of Voltaire - taking uncontextualised Excerpts from Pascal's 'Pensees', he attempts to demolish the Jansenist's Christian Logic, but only exposes himself as a poor Reader forever closed to true Mystery, Poetry and Complexity.
This critical Edition includes a valuable Introduction detailing Voltaire's Experiences in England, contextualising the Letters and proving the Importance on his artistic Development of the Writer's Contact with the ENGLISH Language. An interesting Textual Note explains the Genesis of the Work, and the Status of the various national Editions. Appendices include a long Excerpt from Voltaire's Essay (in ENGLISH) on Milton, and a biographical Appreciation by Goldsmith. The Apparatus is somewhat let down by the Notes. Because this Edition is considered a primary Text, rather than a Translation, Cronk assumes the reader to be a Student in FRENCH Literature, and neglects to translate Quotations on occasion, or to identify unfamiliar (to this Reader, anyway) Personnages.
Good, mild introduction to a great satirist.......2000-09-13
This book is, justifiably, not as famous as _Candide_, but is still a great sample of Voltaire's thinking--and therefore a great example of Enlightenment discourse. In these letters Voltaire criticizes France by praising England, and begins to develop ideas about religion, democracy, and social convention that he continued to work on throughout his life. For my taste, _Philosophical Dictionary_ is more exciting, but these letters are more inviting, and also give insight into the connections between England and France that obviously lie at the heart of their historical antipathy.
