Customer Reviews:
Best guide to Panama.......2006-03-27
I am the travel editor of a lifestyle magazine, and I used Hunter Travel Guides Adventure Guide Panama to plan a recent research trip. I was very impressed with the amount and detail of information the author offered. I looked at many other guides and none came close. I also carried the book with me in Panama and used it to make sightseeing and dining decisions while I was there. In my opinion, it's the best guide to Panama available, and I recommended it highly to my readers in the story which resulted from my trip.
Panama Adventure Guide.......2005-12-14
I am the travel editor for a national travel magazine and have recently had the priviledge of using Patricia Katzmans excellent guide book to Panama. First, the cover is outstanding, one of the best I have seen. I loved all the pictures...they added so much. Second, the print is readable. Third, and most important, I found this guide to be extremely helpful to the average tourist planning a trip. The various areas and activities and the way to reach each destination were well researched. I consider many guide books to be useful only to those who know exactly where they are going (probably with a tour) and want to read about what they are going to see. Pat writes with a touch of humor and a sense of history that brough each area alive. I had the feeling she knew her subject well and I would be inclined to trust her judgement. Her chapter on the Darien, even included a few "reasons not to go" or at least, to not go alone. Great resource material. Mary Jo Plouf
Only take along this book as a companion to another guide........2005-05-09
Not wanting to burden ourselves we choose to bring just this guide book to Panama on our 2 week long vacation. It was published recently, in late 2004, so we felt it should be sufficient. We were wrong. While it is packed full of good information and recommendations, it also misses a lot of essential points. For instance, there are very few maps and the ones they did include, have hardly any street names or even neighborhood names that they are rendered utterly useless.
The Panama City map was especially frustrating and we were very fortunate to have picked up a tourist pamphlet that helped us figure out the city.
The Index is pretty awful. It appeared to have only the major items and didn't index many sights. You had to thumb through to the town or area and find it yourself.
A lot of the information in the book is already outdated. I think this is just a symptom of how quickly Panama is changing, but we found many hotels and restaurants to be shut down.
A final fustration is that sometimes places would be written in their Spanish name in the book and other times as their English translation.
Engaging and useful guide to Panama.......2004-12-16
What a wonderful surprise this guide book has been! My wife and I are off to Panama for a couple of weeks in 2005. We stumbled upon this book while searching for reference material for our trip. Patricia Katzman has a terrifically engaging writing style that makes one want to read the entire book, not just sections that one is traveling too. There are 73 pages of detailed introductory chapters, how to get there, what to expect. Then each province is discussed in details, including places not to miss, along with those narrow dark streets to avoid. There are 4 sections of full color photos depicting the fascinating people and stunning countryside of Panama. This is by far the most useful and well written guidebook I have ever read (and I have read many dozens).

Book Description
Like any big-city paramedic, Shaw Chandler had probably seen a thousand suicides. But he knows a murder when he sees one--and this time it's his own father. Suddenly he's got a metal canister marked "U.S. Navy" in his hands, as he's dragged back to the crazed coral shores of his birthplace, sunny Key West, to explain it.
There, two people from Chandler's past--an impassioned doctor harboring his own long-buried secrets and his seductive actress-daughter, Trula--hold the key to a bizarre environmental scam turned deadly. And as the snares of a suspicious trap of "suicides" close about him, Chandler confronts a deranged killer with a negative IQ, a knack for rhyme, and a genius for killing... and the psychotic mastermind behind the southernmost monopoly on death...
Customer Reviews:
Well crafted........2006-09-10
Shaw Chandler and Trula Montoya were high school sweethearts growing up in Key West. But they went their separate ways. Shaw became a paramedic in Miami and Trula an actress in New York. Now, some twenty years later, they are both compelled to return to their hometown because of a sinister mystery that has darkened their lives.
Bones of Coral by James W. Hall is a marvelous novel. The very "readable" narrative contains a number of insightful passages about life, love and happiness. The characters are vividly drawn and the intricate plot unfolds in a way that is both smooth and satisfying. Of course no modern South Florida mystery would be complete without some bizarre, over-the-top characters to infuse the proceedings with a black comedy aspect. And Bones of Coral has its share of those. At the top of the list is Dougie Barnes a dull witted, cold blooded killer who speaks in rhymes and is quite proud of his freakishly high threshold for pain.
This is a remarkably well crafted novel that succeeds in telling an interesting story in an artful and satisfying manner. Highly recommended.
Touching, grim and very funny.......2006-07-07
My #1 James Hall product; the kind of book I re-read probably once a year, just to remind myself how to create characters. In here he covers not only the spectrum of human characteristics, but also of emotions--from rage to joy--and human virtues and depravities.
Highly recommended reading; not just for fans of this particular genre. A very 'moralistic' work; more so than his others----with the moralizing well concealed under a story that alters between bizarre, funny, harrowing and very touching.

Nobody does it like James W Hall!.......1999-01-22
James W Hall has a knack for creating quirky characters and sleazy bad guys. In this book, he has outdone himself with Dougie Barnes, a dimwitted, muscle-bound, rhyme-spouting, trash-talking thug with an appetite for murder and sex. If you think he's bad, wait until you meet his dad, Douglas, Sr.
In Bones of Coral, ambulance paramedic Shaw Chandler of Miami finds his long lost dad dead in an apparent suicide. Then he gets a frantic call from his Mom. The next thing you know, Shaw is headed to his hometown of Key West to learn the truth about his dad's death and some startling discoveries about his past. James W Hall is an excellent story teller and Bones of Coral is a knock down thriller that will stay with you long after you put it down.
FIVE STARS!!
what happens when a poet writes a adventure.......1998-11-15
Hall has the ability to bring you right into setting and engross the reader in the story. As in all of his books, he always has great villians and that is the fun part of the book.
A Fine Suspense.......1998-09-30
James W. Hall not only tells an intriguing story, but his quality of writing is superior to most in this genre.
Book Description
Many of the corals in Hawaiian waters are found nowhere else in the world. This field guide helps novice snorkelers as well as experienced divers to recognize and identify these corals. It is the first guidebook exclusively devoted to Hawaiian corals, presenting nearly 90 species in glowing color of which over 23 species have never been reported before. Corals of Hawai'i presents the latest information based on the most recent scientific work on Hawaiian corals.
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous!!.......2005-08-01
Finally, a comprehensive guidebook to the corals of Hawai'i. This book provides a fantastic resource for everyone from coral taxonomists to marine biology students to tourists. It provides excellent background material in the first few sections, a user-friendly Coral Directory, species photos and descriptions, and 15 pages of taxonomic notes. Together these features provide a great educational tool and clear, informative reading for everyone regardless of expertise level. No longer does the student of Hawaiian corals need to pick through obscure scientific reports and invertebrate tomes to cobble together information. Plus the research reflected in the taxonomic notes appears to contribute important advances in classification of corals in Hawai'i. Of equal importance, the text and photos are entertaining. Very nicely done.
This is a great book !.......2005-06-22
What a pleasure it is to see this book. This must be THE definitive guide to the corals of Hawai'i. Clearly laid out, with lucid descriptions of the corals that are as valuable scientifically to the expert coral taxonomist as they are accessible to the novice enthusiast, this book is set to become the handbook that all divers and snorkellers in Hawai'ian waters will want to carry with them. Hawai'i is special : it is "far enough north and east to only have about sixty-six species of hard corals, compared to over five hundred in the Philippines, Indonesia and New Guinea", so the book is laid out to help divers learn the most commonly seen corals first. Learn the five corals you are most likely to meet and the rest becomes easier. The Coral Directory sets out the dominant and common species so that divers can get to grips with those first, progressing to the uncommon and rare. The photographs are clear and page references in the Coral Directory lead you straight to the detailed information about that coral in the body of the book. It just couldn't be easier!
This book is a reflection of the enthusiasm that Dr Fenner has for his subject and his talent as a teacher to convey that enthusiasm to his students.

Need to know if Roger Moore ever released a 45, or if Sherman Hemsley made more than one album? (For the, er, record: yes for Moore, no for Hemsley.) Goldmine's Celebrity Vocals is the mother lode of all such facts. Subtitled accurately as "Surprising, Unexpected and Obscure Recordings by Actors, Sports Heroes and Celebrities," it's a handy reference source--but more than that, it's a loopy diversion. As you wander through the pages, the sheer fact of the existence of some of these recordings can be as entertaining as seeking them out and hearing them for yourself.
The book's all-inclusiveness is such that you get the full discographical information on everyone from Mussolini's piano-playing son to director Steven Spielberg (entire output: he whistles on The Color Purple soundtrack). Dates of birth are provided throughout, as are current market values (as of the book's publish date) for the recordings. However, the cover touts the inclusion of "biographical sketches of the artists," and on that front it falls short: one or two sentences in Western Union-speak, delineating only the aspects that qualify each one as celebrity or sports hero, do not constitute a biographical sketch. That shortcoming is offset by the inclusion of a birthplace index--just pick a city and see if anyone famous was born there! Trivial? Perhaps, but perfect comfort on a hot, muggy day, when literature just won't register. --David Greenberger
Customer Reviews:
An Invaluable Resource!.......2000-06-10
I love this book! It's an invaluable resource for those of us who collect celebrity vocals, but more importantly, it's endlessly entertaining. For those who don't collect, it's a great introduction into the wild world of celebrity LP's. There are some great photos and biographical details that make this more than your average discography.
I hope someday they'll make an updated version. 448 pages just doesn't seem like enough!
Highly recommended.

Book Description
Famous for more than two millennia for the amazing deeds that he accomplished in his short life of thirty-two years, King Alexander III of Macedon is the most celebrated figure of classical antiquity. Alexander the Great: Son of the Gods presents, in a year-by-year chronicle, an intimate and
fascinating portrait of the man who, in less than two decades, created the greatest empire the world had ever seen and acquired a semi-mythic status that persists today.
Among the topics covered are Alexander's family life, including his stormy relationship with his father, King Philip, and the influence of his mother, Queen Olympias; his brilliant leadership, outwitting opponents and inspiring his devoted troops; and his daily life on the march and off duty,
whether sharing the hardships of his men or indulging in the renowned bouts of feasting that may have contributed to his early death. Generously illustrated with ancient art from museums around the world, this is an engrossing, accessible biography of a legendary man.
Customer Reviews:
Best All-Around Introduction to Alexander the Great.......2007-04-11
I'm an Alexander buff and have read over two dozen books about this stupendous historic figure and one of the most fascinating and remarkable men who has ever lived. If I had to choose just one book to recommend to a novice who is interested in Alexander but doesn't want to be bogged down by mind-numbingly dry academia, this is the book. The writing is lucid, non-academic, insightful and full of anecdotes that modern readers can relate to and enjoy. The professional overall page layout with the first-rate photographs, illustrations and maps draw the reader into Alexander's world. In terms of combining easy to understand illustrations with top-notch writing, this is the definitive Alexander biography for the layman and Alexander buffs alike.
Although a great all-around book about the Macedonian king and conqueror who came to rule 90% of the known world in his time, this isn't the definitive book for the serious Alexandrian. If you want to dig really deep, there are more in-depth and scholarly writings from the likes of Robin Lane Fox, Peter Green, J.F.C. Fuller, Paul Cartledge, A.B. Bosworth, Mary Renault, N.G.L. Hammond and others. Still, this is the book I'd recommend to people who want to get started with Alexander but don't know where to begin. It's clear, easy to absorb but leaves plenty of room for the reader to be imaginative about what he or she is taking in - the true mark of a great book. Highly recommended!
Sumptuous, measured, comprehensive, and concise.......2006-12-26
Two classical scholars have collaborated, using the resources of the Getty Museum of Los Angeles, to provide in a short compass a stunning presentation of the present state of knowledge of the life and times of the greatest general in the history of the world.
Full-color illustrations, with informative identifications, accompany every page. The treatment of sources is short but exemplary: the reader is informed to what extent sources disagree and who wrote them. Most impressively the archeological work of the last few decades is incorporated into the traditional story seamlessly and with great authority.
It is unfortunate that the maps are by no means adequate to convey the meaning of the text: places, provinces, battlefields are mentioned and described but absent from the rudimentary maps.
The reference value of this beautiful work of art is enough to justify its purchase.
A Best Seller.......2004-01-23
This is a fantastic book and certain gives a valuable insite into Alexander the Great and Ancient Greece. You can tell from the level of detail within the book that the authors have tried to give the read as much information about Alexander and his life as one of the worlds greatest conquers.
A must read!!
Alexander -- A Soldier's Soldier.......2003-05-25
Alexander was, first and foremost, a soldier's soldier. No armchair general, he; he led from the front, and this during an age of warfare when being "in front" was hazardous in the extreme. He was, of course, a brilliant strategist and tactician, but he never forgot his soldiers who carried the fight to his enemy. When they were on campaign, he shared their lot -- food, quarters, hardships, and all -- entirely. And, for this, they gave him their undying loyalty. Discipline, courage, fortitude, vision -- these, and many more -- are the characteristics that made Alexander III truly great.
This book captures the sense of Alexander, his relationships and his achievements extremely well. Never ponderous, it nevertheless completely describes his singular achievements. This is also a very "visual" reading experience. The illustrations, maps and photographs complement the reading and enhance the reader's understanding very well.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience.

Book Description
This is the first biography in ninety years of Reginald Pole (1500SH1558), one of the most important international figures of the sixteenth century. Pole's career is followed as protégé and then harshest critic of Henry VIII, as cardinal and papal diplomat, legate of Viterbo, a nearly successful candidate for pope, and finally as legate to England, archbishop of Canterbury, architect of the English Counter-Reformation, and victim of both Pope Paul IV and of himself.
