A Must-Have!.......2003-01-30

I've been vacationing on the Vineyard for about a decade - but only last year picked up this great book, packed with terrific suggestions on places to go to see the "real" Vineyard -- on foot, on bike and even on kayak. The format is easy to follow - providing local history, step-by-step directions, and details on what you'll see along the way, such as the types of flowers, birds and trees. There seems to be a wide variety of activities (I didn't try any of the kayaking options), geared to people of all ages and fitness levels. The book is very well-researched, and since the summer I've recommended it to many Vineyard residents as well as to vacationers - there's something in it for everyone. I did found it helpful to tear out pages of interest and bring them with me, as the book is a sizable one. But I will be using it for years and years.

The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-14

This book is historically accurate, funny, satirical, informative, entertaining - in a single word "wonderful". It has been an inspiration to me. When I found out that there was no more Willy Cuppy I was so disappointed that I started my own series on Famous Folks. I have temporarily entitled my book Hobo Notes on Famous Folks.
Obviously I loved the idea and the style of Willy Cuppy. Of course Will is much smarter than I am, but hopefully I can make up for my inadequacy in other ways.
Willy inspires me to sit down and start writing as does Robert Service and Mark Twain.
You can't miss with anything by Willy Cuppy - this is probably his most well known publication.

An oldie but a goodie.......2007-04-03

I have an original copy of the 1963 printing of Will Cuppy's The Decline and Fall of Practically Everybody. Cuppy was a hilliarious writer. To do good comedy one has to take it seriously and Cuppy takes his history seriously, but I can't read his history without chuckling. His footnotes add to the humorous text. In this book he lampoons the various characters we learned about in highschool including Hannibal, Cleopatra, Columbus and Montezuma just to name a few. Will Cuppy makes one interested in what used to be just dull dates and factoids. Go for this one, you won't be disappointed.

Must read for any history or humour buff.......2007-03-06

I have read this work so many times I have worn out three copies, no exaggeration. It is delightful humour, of a sort rarely found nowadays. And it's not too bad as a history either. No "1066 and all that" drollery here. This is genuinely amusing, and it has held readers captive for decades. This book inspired me to seek the history behind the humour which has led to three decades of being a contented arm chair historian.

You will not be disappointed in this book, which I feel is Cuppy's best.

One of my all-time favorites. My decades-old copy was literally falling apart, so I was glad to find a hard-cover edition available at a reasonable price.

A Fond Memory Returned.......2006-04-07

My high school history teacher (who was no fool and knew his stuff better than some professors I met in college) gave me this book. His copy was the original thing-- almost falling apart from being loved by so many students. It managed to spark an interest in history in me, because quite frankly I have no patience for the "golden sheen" that so many people try to put on historical figures. Who on earth cares about someone who's so perfect you could never talk to them, anyway? Let's face it, the so-called "greats" were people with flaws and quirks just like we are! Bravo to Will Cuppy for having the guts and the skill to portray them in a way that makes us laugh and makes us question a little beyond the almost impenetrable veil of History.

The phrase "fresh context" should perhaps read "total context" because "Eleanor of Aquitaine: Lord and Lady" studies Eleanor's responses and actions through every facet of her times.

Let's face it, Eleanor's "infamy" is the source and sustenance of our enduring fascination nine centuries on. Had she lived the straightened life expected of her, she would long ago have been forgotten. Eleanor's infamy marks the track of an exceptional lady's refusal to bow to the restrictive, male-centric mores of her times. Another factor is also at work: Had she been Peter Abelard, the Church would have known how to cope with her. But a strong-willed noble female in the twelfth century was beyond the reach of correction or reason.

As these scholarly authors dissect Eleanor's times and the mindset that established and reinforced her character they are clearly not considering Mae West's dictum, "Any publicity is good publicity." However, whether they know it or not, they are examining the minutiae of Eleanor's psyche through Mae West's next line: "When I'm good, I'm very good. But when I'm bad, I'm better."

Eleanor spent the first fifteen years of her life in the relatively relaxed atmosphere of her father's courts in Poitou and Aquitaine. The full weight of Christianity imposed through faith by rote and censure did not strike her fully until she entered Paris as its queen. In short, Eleanor had experienced a broader, happier world for long enough that her early years made a lasting difference. Refusing to let social and religious constraint limit her scope, she found in herself the courage and character to fight priestly cant and society's cynicism for the rest of her days (while generating plenty of cynicism of her own).

"Eleanor of Aquitaine: Lord and Lady" examines Eleanor and her environments from every possible angle. The book's scholarly analyses are academic and sober: I miss the playfulness of irreverence, the tweaking of clerical and noble noses. That said, "Eleanor of Aquitaine: Lord and Lady" provides an extraordinarily vivid resource, for scholars, and for general readers who want to understand the woman and the motives for her reactions and counterblasts against her many critics and her times.
