Took this book on our trip and found it to be very helpful. Loved reading the history or background, gives you a better understanding of how and why before you visit the sites. Restaurant recommendations were spot on. If I had to change anything, I would be more specific on location of restaurants. Instead of saying go towards ocean and turn; street names would be beneficial as a lot of the streets cross in different directions. Otherwise, a great book to have for your trip.

Our vacation in the Keys wouldn't have been so amazing had we not bought this book. Everything we did, ate, and enjoyed came from a recommendation found within the pages of this easy to read and user-friendly guide. The references to ocean-side vs. gulf-side made it simple to locate desitinations and the "hidden" secrets made our vacation like a scavenger hunt.

"Buried Treasure".......2005-02-18

Not every guidebook on the keys would feature such an unassuming place as Jim and Val's Tugboat Restaurant in Key Largo. Jim and Val's Tugboat is one of the true "buried treasures" of Florida, and this guidebook has enough sense to put it in bold. Wonder if we'll see the place over-run by "foodies" who will go anywhere to try something new.

Long ago, pirates prowled the waters around the keys, and nowadays, it's chic to blame the congestion of the keys on tourists, but sometimes it's just people drawn to the good food (like the steak poivre which is simply out of this world) or people trying to find out what drew poet Wallace Stevens back, year after year, to the Key West hotel about which he wrote such a haunting poem. This guidebook will be a nice souvenir for you, even if you haven't been in Key Largo for some time. It will bring it all back to you--the salty creosote smell, the cerise skies that turn inky at night, the stars that twinkle right above your head--you can almost catch one by the toe.

Very Rare But Essential Volume.......2006-03-24

French Artist Henri Matisse (1869-1954) just got better as he got older. Never as fluent a talent as his rival Picasso, Matisse instead worked for a lifetime to achieve an unparalleled immediacy and spontaneity in his art. Personally, the 1940s were difficult years for Matisse: He witnessed the fall of France to the Nazi legions and separated from his wife permanently in 1940, and in 1941 he developed a case of serious intestinal cancer. The operation nearly killed him and left him a semi-invalid for the remaining 13 years of his life. The "Themes and Variations" suite, begun in September 1941 and completed in March 1942, may be his most important sustained meditation on the art and philosophy of the line. Although Matisse is best remembered as an absolute master of color, line in fact forms the vital substructure of his investigation into the nature of reality and of vision. This volume - now sadly out-of-print and very hard to find - makes available to the public all 168 images produced in the suite. The subjects are familiar, even traditional - still lives, arrangements of flowers and fruit, seated female
figures - but the method is extraordinary. As in the notebooks of Leonardo or Picasso's 1930s Vollard Suite, Matisse approaches drawing as an intellectual act. Each group of drawings begins with the "theme" - a heavily-reworked charcoal - and continues with the "variation" - anywhere from 3 to 16 treatments of the same basic image done in pen-and-ink (for the most part) or conte crayon (rarely). Each "theme" treats the friable medium of charcoal as the equivalent of oil paint; although the final image is composed of a few simple lines, Matisse achieves volume and depth through the pentimenti left behind by previous versions which were erased in the search for the simplest form. In some cases, the effect of the multiple erasures creates an uncanny sense of movement and the passage of time, as in time-lapse or superimposition photography. The "variations,"on the other hand, offer a different perspective. Most people have very little idea just how difficult pen-and-ink drawing really is - one mistake, one hesitation, a single error in judgment, and all is ruined. The "variations" here are truly masterful. One's eyes are literally dazzled by the fluency, spontaneity and immediacy of Matisse's line and his ability to create planar space and the illusion of color in images that lack conventional shading. The method itself is nearly Chinese or ancient Egyptian - a search for eternal forms below the surface of reality. Yet reality itself is a shifting surface in these drawings - Matisse changes angles, poses, and linear weights constantly, emphasizes a different aspect of the basic composition, zooms in for a close-up or out for a wide-angle view, and even alters the format from vertical to horizontal and back again. In the drawings which examine human subjects (mostly his favorite models Lydia Delectorskaya and the beautiful Turkish princess Nezy Chawkat), the appearance of the models also shifts, from near-portraiture to abstract signs and back again (seen for instance here in the lovely juxtaposition of the last drawing of the M series with the "theme"of the P series; one is an utterly simple portrait of Madame Lydia done in graphite, the other is a monumental charcoal of the same woman, her features now reduced to a blank oval). Logically, most of us know that "reality" is ever-changing - the lessons of particle physics teach us that what we see as discrete objects are just vibrating energies held in suspension - but intellectually, most of us refuse this knowledge, preferring instead to live in a world of solid, eternal, unchanging forms. Line - a basic human invention which exists itself nowhere in nature - separates forms and planes, cutting space into separate objects and providing a border to nature's endless flow. Thus, Matisse's technique uses the most basic instrument of recording reality to 'recode" the world instead. Each "variation" seems to make a final statement, yet there is always another perspective, another angle, another shift in viewpoint. In some instances - like the famous "F" series, in which the model appears to slowly awaken from a dream - the effect Matisse creates is cinematic, suggestive of the passage of time. In this reviewer's opinion, the suite is the most intellectual and abstract linear investigation of reality in the 20th century and demonstrates that the image can be just as philosophical as the word. This fine book itself is a mini-masterpiece - the drawings are superbly reproduced and the constant shift in format from vertical to horizontal forces the reader to physically engage with each image. As with the best Dover publications, the binding is secure and the book may be consulted frequently without falling apart. Why this important volume is out-of-print is a mystery to me, for no art library can be considered complete without it. Available through dealers of rare books, and usually for a price of not less than $100, but worth every penny to the right person. A must-have.

A necessary reprint, but the text should have been included.......1999-04-15

Lovers of fine drawings and of Matisse should definitely add this book to their collections. Dover has reprinted a volume originally published in Paris in 1943 as a series of loose portfolios. The drawings were done by Matisse from spring 1941 to summer 1942, and comprise a thematically and technically linked suite lettered from A to P. Each set consists of a "theme" drawing done in heavily reworked charcoal, accompanied by a series of "variations" executed in ink, pencil, or crayon. The subjects are elegantly dressed women (mostly his model, Lydia Delectorskaya) and arrangements of flowers and fruit. These subjects are interwoven to create a stunning tapestry of draughtsmanship, suggestive of a timeless realm of beauty bathed in the brilliant light of the Cote d'Azur. Despite the order of the drawings, they may be examined by the reader as he or she pleases, but I find that viewing the book in chronological sequence produces the sensation of viewing a filmstrip. The rapid execution of many of the drawings creates a sensation of overlapping moments, an illusion of shifting time which almost places you in Matisse's mind as the works were made. I would have given this book 5 stars (for the art alone), but the editors made two mistakes: first, they omitted the introductory text written by Louis Aragon, and second, the bulk of the drawings are reproduced horizontally, which makes the book somewhat difficult to use (the original edition, which was unbound did not have this problem). Also, the cover design is less than inspired. Otherwise, this is a necessary addition to any art library, especially since the original edition of this book is quite rare.

The Collector's Encyclopedia Of Barbie Doll Exclusives is a great reference to the value of different types of Barbies. I was a little dissapointed that the Holiday Barbies and Bob Mackie Barbies are not listed in the book but I was pleased, otherwise. I would recommend this book.

Having read the other collector's encyclopedia's written by this author, this one is also a beautiful collection of the Barbie doll's one may want to know about and/or collect. The pictures are well done and the descriptions very clear and understandable. At a book store, before even my first purchase of these books, I skimmed other books stating they had what I was looking for, but none compared to Michael J. Augustyniak's. Through his books, I have been able to purchase Barbies at what I know is a fair and good price for my own collection. Very good resource book. Highly recommended.

I have looked at many many books trying to find one that would help me to easily identify Barbie. Well folks, this is it! The pictures are wonderful, brightly colored and large enough to see detail. This is a "Must Have" book if you are a collector. (or if you buy used dolls to make up an OOAK) Well worth the money spent. I highly recommend!

Wonderful Encyclopedia for Barbie collectors!.......2001-10-24

This book is the most wonderful Encyclopedia about Barbie dolls. It has so many dolls listed with descriptions, prices and pics of the dolls in their boxes. Many pink boxes, OOAK Mattel dolls and collectibles. Pictures are nice, they are from the doll in box, and there are closes on some dolls.

If you need information on Pink Boxes, this book is the best!!! There are a new version 'cos this is not updated, the dolls showed ends on 1999. There are no 2000 dolls or 2001. But there are a second edition, so search for the new edition!

This book was very informative regarding dolls and values. I wish it would have had more of the "Special Edition" models and values though. Lots of pictures that are a good size for viewing and easy to see.

This book is put together very well, the index pages in the back make it easy to locate the dolls that you are looking for. I am a beginner and this book was very helpful for me to put a value on the dolls that I already have.

I just received the COLLECTOR'S ENCYCLOPEDIA of BARBIE by JMichael Augustyniak. I thought I knew a lot about the value of eachdoll, I sell them and buy them regularly right here on amazon.com auctions. However, I opened the pages of this book and it is fantastic and a must for any serious collector. All the photos are in color, by date, series, it is all in this book. You will be amazed that some Barbies are valued in high 5 figures! I'm so glad I have this reference. Everyone who is interested in Barbie should! END

If you have any love of the English language, and are able to tell good photographs from bad ones, you will truly dislike all of the books by this woman that I have read, including Barbie Exclusives volumes 1, 2 and 3. The text is virtually unreadable, almost completely devoid of any real information, and is generally a painful experience. The photographs are almost equally bad, ranging from grainy yellowish shots, to lovely ones in which box-front glare almost obliterates any details of the doll inside. Truly, you can do much better than this series! Try the Collector's Encyclopedia of Barbie Doll Exclusives and More by J. Michael Augustyniak.

Timless Creations- A Timeless Book.......1998-05-30

This book by Margo Rana is fun and informative. The pictures are very detailed, bright and well done, making the reader feel like they own each doll. I got my book over a year ago for $25. I missed out on this great deal, but I hope that others won't. Margo Rana really explains the dolls in full detail, but they are in her own words. She marks pricing well, so when you go to a doll show or are shopping for dolls, you know what is a good deal and what isn't. When Margo talked about the Pink Splendor doll, the last doll she talked about, she commented to the reader about the $900 listing price on the doll. She said, "Be kind when judging this doll; it's not her fault she is so expensive." This book is extremely fun to look at. I seem to find something new and special about each doll every time I read it. I hope that you will buy this book and enjoy as much as I did. Even as a young collector (I'm 13) I find this book a great blessing.

A BOOK FOR A LIFETIME .......2007-03-05

Here I am ordering another copy of this book. I keep "loaning" them. I received my first copy in the mid-1950s as a horse/cowboy-loving teenager in Indiana. My USFS Ranger uncle sent it to me because he knew....!!! Knew it would be another huge nudge in getting me out to the Great Pacific Northwest other than just for visits. I made it in 1968 and my husband and I have visited the area depicted in the book countless times. I will soon turn 70 and have enjoyed reading this book every few years throughout my life. It is most compelling. The reviews of others are definitely right on. What more can I say other than, read it?

Grass Beyond the Mountains.......2006-01-31

Pan Phillips had the "Pan Phillips International Airport" at his fishing camp beyond Anahim Lake B.C. For several years, we flew into his little airport between 2 lakes. Pan told us some of the same stories that are in this book. Louis Soukup was one of the first pilots to the area. Louis would fly in, any equipment that Pan needed, on the pontoons of his airplane. This book gives the stories as though you were sitting at the feet of the men who were the first settlers in this area of British Colombia. It is really an adventure to read.

We own the Legacy Ranch high in the mountains of Northeastern Utah. For years we have loved the beauty of the unspoiled wilderness. Nursing newborn elk calves, watching Canadian Lynx outside their lairs, and many other adventures have cast us in the mold of lovers of the wilderness. To read the adventures of true cowboys, who started with nothing else but their "grit" and ended up with lives spent plumbing the depths of fun and hard work was one of the top literary experiences of our lives. This book, far better than the sequels, will be part o four Christmas giving this year.

Nothing To It!.......1999-12-12

Nothing to reading it, that is. This is one of the first nonfictions books I've read that I have ever liked. I got interested in it when I saw the TV show 'Nothing Too Good For A Cowboy' and had to read the books. This book made me laugh and almost made me cry. The characters are too funny and very heart-warming.
