Book Description
Since James Herriot first began his practice almost a century ago, new technologies and the changing concerns of animal owners have dramatically altered the veterinarian's world. Through a kaleidoscope of contrasting portraits, Lee Gutkind introduces an equally impassioned lot of doctors and their sometimes eccentric patients. Animal lovers will love this journey from tony, expensive Manhattan practices to mucky farms, from cutting-edge animal hospitals to zoos and aquatic parks.

Great book on the inside look of veterinary life.......2003-09-18
I am writing this review after reading that book so long ago. But, it still is stuck in my mind. Veterinarians touch has a way of telling it that gets the readers attention because its not an eduacation of veterinary medicine but stories OF veterinarians.
This book has sad, funny and serious storys that will stick in your mind for a long time...for example....this one part i remeber where a vet gave this lady hormone stimulants for her dog and they worked so well for the dog she gave them to her husband and lets just say that she has been coming back for more.
This book had partly inspired me to look more into the field of being a vet and you are the same as me it will probably do the same for you.
There was a peice so go rent this or buy it if you are interested in the practice or just like the subject.
Better than medical arts.......2001-03-07
As an ex-Operating room Nurse, I think I can understand his comment that Veterinarians are more compassionate & caring than most HUMAN Medical professionals ! Perhaps the ability to care, to touch, to openly show love & compassion to the animal patients is what is sadly lacking in our present medical system. Animals evoke this in most people, and thankfully so. Perhaps we can look forward to a day where Physicians can treat their 2 legged Patients with as much caring.
A sympathetic look at veterinarians.......2000-10-04
A Veterinarian's Touch is a very sympathetic look at veterinarians. It is somewhat reminisant of the Herriot books but addresses a much wider range of vet medicine. After all there have been a few changes since the 1940's!
As a vet, I actually thought Mr. Gutkind was almost too forgiving. One young vet poured fluid into a cow's lungs and killed her acutely and this essentially passed off with a shrug. Some of the vets that he profiled were doing oncology and surgical procedures that should have been referred to specialists. (They were in New York City so it would have been option.) I had the strong impression that that particular group of vets had very few procedures that they would not perform provided that the owners had a valid gold card. He also bought the party line from the laboratory animal veterinarians that they were out to save mankind, when it could have been addressed that they were predominately out to obtain grant money. Having done some of my training at Penn, I suspect that Mr. Gutkind did not get to see the research animals of at least two of his subjects or he probably would not have painted them so kindly!
Overall, the book is entertaining and well written and I thank him for showing that most of my profession labors for love of the animals.

Record City had awesome service getting the book to me. Thank you!
The book arrived in perfect condition. I will certainly use them again.
The book is a gift for a friend. I know he will be very excited with the history and information in this great book.
Outstanding illustrations of the different models.......2001-01-03
I was fortunate to find a copy of this book in the close-out bin at a local bookstore. This was such a good book that I'm now looking at the author's other books.
One thing I like is that the book is profusely illustrated, and that all the background clutter has been cut away from the photos, so that all you see is the bike against a plain white background. Combined with the clear photography and printing, it really allows you to see machine details that would normally get lost.
Another nice characteristic of this book is that the emphasis is upon the bikes, with background information on the state of the company that helps to explain why the bikes evolved the way they did. This historical orientation was aided by the chronological orientation of the book. Related to this is that the book was about bikes, not lifestyles. I hope that when I get a copy of his book on Harleys that this will be true there as well (notice that most books on Harleys have more photos of "trailer trash" than they do of motorcycles, and that you rarely get a chance to see what the older bikes looked like from the factory? -- OK, rant mode off).
If you are fortunate to run across this book, buy it.
Now, if we could get books like this for all the major European and English manufacturers (hint, hint).

A wasted effort.......2006-04-22
Basic Information.
Great Illustrations.
BUT!
The illustrations are on facing pages,
so the middle of the illustrations are lost.
Some are on one page and are OK.
Very Disappointing.
These great illustration are wasted in this format.
Would give it minus rating, if possible.
Glad I did not pay more.

Not exactly Truth in Packaging........2001-09-27
...I ordered this book as a gift for my brother-in-law, who's into motorcycles. I thought the book would be exactly what the title said: a celebration of the long, proud history of Harley-Davidson, replete with gorgeous, suitable-for-framing photos of the company's products. The book arrived. I took one look at it, and gave it instead to my friend Bob, who has a taste for oddities. Bob took one look at it, and exclaimed, "THIS IS A COFFEE-TABLE BOOK ABOUT HELL'S ANGELS!" As indeed it is, down to the last bike-chain-wielding bruiser and Jello-wrestling biker babe. Sure, they all ride Harleys, but Harley-Davidson itself is--shall we say--peripheral to the book's actual theme. The photos are very well-done, if suitable-for-framing pix of Hell's Angels are what you want.

Book Description
Here's a beautifully illustrated volume making it possible for apartment or condo dwellers, or those with only a small plot of land, a deck, pathway, or even a rooftop to create a garden in a small space. A creative and practical sourcebook of innovative ideas and simple techniques for transforming a limited space into a gardening oasis.
Customer Reviews:
Container gardeners beware........2003-03-02
Several things turned me off about the book. First, it's seems very British for some reason. Second, it goes in to pages and pages and pages of assessing your situation, whether you are a blind gardener, "the importance of design", then gets into water gardens and water features, and raised beds. Suffice it to say that it didn't seem very geared toward the apartment owner with a 7x10 foot balcony!
It's not there isn't useful information in this book, but it's about plants in general, though. This is not totally geared toward the container gardener. I guess that's said in the subtitle: Creating gardens on patios, balconies, terraces, AND IN OTHER SMALL SPACES. About 85 pages into the book, about types of hanging baskets, window boxes and other containers. Then it gets into container design where you choose compatible plant partnerships. But even here there's a little trouble, because the illustrations show plants that are NOT IN CONTAINERS but in a garden setting. From there you get into soils, how to propagate the plants, how to control pests (suggests picking off caterpillars will do...ewwww!),
I needed more from this book. I needed a book on containers and tha plants that grow well in them. One that talked about a wide variety of plants, especially those that grow well in my zone. I could care less about the parts of a plant and stuff I had in biology. In the very back, where it talks about "lack of space makes this plant list no more than a suggestion." Well, if they hadn't filled it with [stuff] what was off-topic, there may well have been room to discuss more plants. The main problem with this book, in my opinion, is that it lacks focus.
Bottom line, I guess it depends on what you need out of this book. This book works well as a general plant care reference book, but if you need a book specifically on the special needs of plants in containers, I'd try another book. One that was more helpful to me, and one which I consider my own personal bible as far as container plants goes, is called Container Plants for Patios, Balconies, and Window Boxes by Halina Heitz, published by Barron's. I have plumbagos, and while there's no mention of them in the No-Garden Gardener, you'll find useful references to them there.
Black thumbs be gone!.......2000-04-25
This is probably not a book for more experienced gardeners... but luckily I'm not. The writing on the design aspect of the non-garden seems common sense (and it is), but the book is a real treasure for the beginning gardener and those of us who just have two left thumbs. This is because it includes basic guides on such diverse topics as: plant biology, planting (from rock gardens to hanging plants), caring for the plant, propagation and pest control. Guides to planting and plant maintenance include diagrams and step-by-step instruction for easy use. The book's best feature though is its lovely photography; the photos are intended to inspire the reader with ideas about the design of their no-garden garden.

Book Description
The Topography of Remembrance deals with different forms of remembrance and collective memory in Mesopotamia, discussing both its public (national) and private (family) aspects. The Introduction offers a history of modern, European memory in comparison with the Mesopotamian mode. The research adds to the recent discussion on collective memory. The Mesopotamians found tools for the construction and passing on of common remembrance in liturgical repetition, in the preservation of buildings and monuments, and in communication channels. To describe these processes the author deals with different texts written between 2300-300 BC, which transport memory from a historical, administrational or religious perspective. According to this study, the need to remember was prompted by the search for identity, a dynamic process in which forgetting played an essential part. The description of this process is also relevant to modern society. It offers an important contribution to the discussion of acculturation and identity.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2007-07-16
Aissa Wayne (the author of this book and daughter of John Wanye)wines and complains thoughout the whole book. Making this very disappointing if you were hoping to read some good stories of John Wayne behind the camera.
Her Father Would Be Proud...........2006-09-22
I am close to the same age as Aissa and from the time I was 10, while other pre-teen girls were obsessing over Bobby Sherman and David Cassidy, I was crazy about John Wayne -50 years my senior. This adoration carried over throughout high school and was so well known that one boy, trying to secure a date, only succeeded by impersonating John Wayne's familiar drawl and naming his jeep "The Duke." In Tucson, the whole town loved John Wayne and affectionately dubbed a Saturday Night midnight viewing of his earliest 1930's westerns - "The Worst of John Wayne." All my dates knew that I had to be home by 11:45 PM because this weekly event couldn't be missed. When he passed away, my friends sent sympathy cards to me and I truly mourned him.
For years, I avoided this book because I thought it would read like "Daddy Dearest." After reading it, I am only sorry that it took me so long to order it.
Aissa presents a candid and honest view of her famous father - through a daughter's eyes. She speaks with love and pride of her father and yet also addresses the downside of being a child of such a famous icon as well. Some of the ways that her father showed his love toward her were so incredibly sweet that I actually envied her childhood. And some of his strictness - especially towards his sons, was so indicative of how men in that era believed that "real men don't cry" and that it was their duty to instruct their sons to be "strong and silent."
In reading the book, it is so clear that John Wayne deeply loved his children - but Aissa was probably his favorite. I believe that her father showed his love the most by not always being the "nice guy," but by often being pretty strict. Parents can't always be friends with their kids during the teenage years because authority is questioned and undermined so much during those years, but it is obvious that John Wayne was strong and responsible and wanted to prepare Aissa with qualities that would carry her over to adulthood. The fact that Aissa became an attorney speaks volumes in that her father would be so immensely proud of her as this was an ambition of his as well.
In many ways, I identified with Aissa because my father was also "larger than life" as a commanding officer of the Green Berets. Ironically, he passed away from lung cancer 5 years before John Wayne. Although not famous, as children of an officer, we were required to present a façade and behave in a manner that would enhance my father's career so I understood to some degree the resentment that Aissa felt growing up. Likewise, I think that we all were somewhat mortified to be around our parents in the 70's. I also know what it is like to have such a vibrant force depart and how angry I felt because he had died and how lost our whole family felt for so many years afterwards. So this book was like reading part of my life. Aissa states that for so many years she was attracted to men like her father and I can see now why I idolized John Wayne.
The one area of the book that I questioned was John Wayne's relationship to his personal secretary, Pat Stacy. I remember the Barbara Walters interview and I am almost sure that he actually wiped a tear away during the interview and then stated that he had found a woman that he really loved. Also, Maureen O'Hara - one of the Duke's best friends, mentions in her book that John Wayne and Pat were in love and that she was glad that he could share his last years with a woman he loved. Likewise, he bought Pat a house right across the street from him as I think in his own mind John Wayne would not want to openly "live with" Pat during that era. It is understandable that Aissa did not want to see that her father was in love with another woman other than her mother. But I believe that John Wayne would want Aissa and Pat now to be friends because he loved them both so much. Personally, I believe that both Aissa and Pat wrote books about John Wayne, not to financially benefit from it, but rather because they felt they owed it to his fans, to themselves, and to John Wayne, himself.
Two things that I wish had been included in this book: Aissa did not mention that her father had been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, with the words " John Wayne - American." I think that this award must have meant so much to her father - almost more than all his other awards. Also, one of my favorite memories of her father was when he appeared on the hugely popular "Laugh-In." He wore this huge bunny suit and had a deadpanned expression and only John Wayne could have gotten away with this. It was hilarious and it just made me think so much more of him that he could be so vulnerable and confident enough to do this.
I have a great amount of respect for Aissa for writing this intimate and honest account of her father through her eyes. We all felt that the Duke "belonged" to us and I am sure that it wasn't easy to share her famous father with the world.
A different perspective on John Wayne.............2006-07-02
I have to admit I haven't finished this book but am enjoying it so much. It is a totally different view of John Wayne. Much is revealed about his first two marriages. The view through the eyes of a small child is different indeed. You will see a side of John Wayne that was never publicized. It's a good read that's getting better everyday.
Reader.......2005-10-24
Another excellant book . It must have been difficult for Aissa
to write all this down , but I , as a John Wayne fan , am glad
that she did . Thank you Aissa , for telling us who your
father really was . He will allways be our " HERO " .
Jack Yannuzzi
She doesn't tap dance.......2004-10-30
In response to Sgt. Pepper, I really have a hard time with your comments about Aissa Wayne. I don't think she tap dances anymore, and she surely has no interest in rapping -- that's ridiculous!
Aissa is a well-known California attorney and former prosecutor. She has been in several of her father's films, as a youngster, and spends evenings at home with her family (sort of a soccer mom), according to her bio. She is an accomplished writer and career woman, and I think this book is a great look at her famous father, the Duke.
If she ever did rap, I assure you she would do it well. In the meantime, I suspect she will stick to her law career.
Customer Reviews:
A great read for Yeats fans.......2003-06-03
This collection of essays (with a few poems) covers a variety of subjects dealing with W.B. Yeats's father, family, and friends. Some of the best Yeats scholars in the world have work in this book, including the Curator of the Yeats Museum in Dublin (Hilary Pyle), the author of J.B. Yeats's biography (William M. Murphy), the authors of Jeanne Foster's biography (Richard and Janis Londraville), the editor of NEST magazine (Paul B. Franklin)--and many others. I liked the variety--some short, some long, some light, some challenging. I learned many new things.
