You won't be a "Dummie" for long!.......2005-04-10

I have looked at SEVERAL Toronto guidebooks and I just couldn't find one that I liked...until I picked up this book (and bought it) It was both thorough and concise, skipping the long narratives and in depth history that you find in so many other books.
This book even includes post-it flags to mark your favorite pages. (I can't believe no one else ever thought of that!) It was a very nice and useful touch!
If you plan on spending some time in Toronto (and day tripping here and there in the surrounding areas i.e. Niagara Falls etc.) this is the only guidebook you will need!

Not just for kids. Interested adults will also like it........1998-08-28

This book is really divided into two parts. One part is a kid's vampire story that kids may enjoy but adults will probably find tedious and silly. The other part of the book involves pages of anecdotes about vampires, legends, and myths. Fascinating stuff. What I like about it is how the book explores the basis of vampires and related monsters. Our scary stories are really older myths redone. Now, this is not an exhaustive treatment of the subject, but it still satisfies the curious adult. Childish drawings are nicely intermingled with sharp photos and "old" drawings.

Lent to me by a friend to get ideas on using large planters Ifound A Tuscan Paradise to be an absolute delight to both the eyes andsoul. Not only is there beauty in the landscape photographs but of those indoors as well, how the home and its furnishings harmonize with the spendor of nature well attended.

Schinz's individual photographs are often masterpieces of composition, visual ships-in-a-bottle of perfection. They hold one's eyes like fine Impressionism.

If you have a friend who loves gardening, buy them this book! It makes me want to pack for Tuscany every time I think of it.

Great Read.......2007-07-27

Very well written and informative. I learned alot about both the diamond business and the great Canadian North by reading this book. Very entertaning.

One of the most memorable books I have read.......2007-05-15

It has been a number of years since I bought and read Barren Lands. Although I greatly enjoyed the book while I read it, I appreciate it even more now because it has left me with many vivid memories of tales told in the book and with knowledge about diamonds and geology that I would not have known otherwise. The book is more multi-dimensional, and works on more levels than almost any other book touching on Geology that I have read. In this multi-dim respect, I think it actually exceeds John McPhee's Rising from the Plains - which is quite a feat. What do I mean by multi-dimensional? Here are some examples that are still bouncing around in my mind years after reading Barren Lands:
1.) The impression that is left of the Australian Mining Company BHP Billiton: I am left impressed by the way they kept their feelers out in this fringe community of explorers, and nutured a relationship with Fipke and Blusson until they found the first paydirt. (Way to go Hugo!) If one bought stock in BHP soon after this book came out, one would have probably recovered hundreds of times the books price in appreciation.
2.) Fipke: I suspect that if he were growing up today in USA public schools, he would be first diagnosed with some kind of attention-deficit disorder, pumped full of Ritalin and then finally jailed when he would inevitably fail to be successfully hammered into servile, abject mediocrity. I think there is a huge lesson here for academia: STOP measuring people with standardized tests, and figure out a way to help each person find his or her own, particular intellectual fire the way Fipke did.
3.) The endgame just before the discovery of the first pipe under the frozen lake. The cash is gone, winter is closing in, competitors with megabucks are catching on, and Canadian laws require you to divulge your secret the moment you make your discovery.... Such unlikely reality and so wonderfully told.
4.) Death in the wilderness: lightning bolts and helo crashes. If it were fiction, people would criticise it for being unbelievable.
5.) Black flies.
6.) Shooting stars and prophecies.

Much more. What a great and memorable book.

A great read but...........2007-03-10

A really well crafted book with some flowing prose but... there is an element of 'faction' about this book. The author takes literary license to the extreme by describing in detail events he never witnessed and although it might make for great fiction, it made me wonder just how much of the book's narrative is at best exaggeration, at worse pure fabrication.

But I thought the geological details in the book were well explained and the one lasting impression that I was left with was just how boringly methodical, time consuming and repetitive prospecting for diamonds really is, no matter how colorful and larger than life you make the people doing it.

Great Adventure Read.......2006-12-24

Barren Lands is one of the great adventure reads. A bit slower and less gripping than Krakauer, but a great read.

Really two stories in one book........2006-08-04

Krajick has written one of many books detailing the hunt for diamonds in the Canadian North. Unlike several of the other writers, Krajick devoted the first part of this book to the land itself. In a fascinating historical journey readers get to follow early explorers and native inhabitants across the most unforgiving wilderness on earth, with stops in the American Southwest, Africa, and South America thrown in to heighten the story.

The second half of the book focuses on the small cadre of competing geologists and explorers who carried the search for diamonds from Arkansas, through New Mexico, Colorado, Southwestern Canada, and eventually to the Arctic. (As a side note, having seen how aggressively Arkansas was searched, I'll never bother prospecting there again.)

As the story progresses it begins to focus on the small group led by Charles Fipke that eventually spearheaded the discovery of the Barren Lands Diamonds. It is here that I think the book digresses too much into the personal live (and failings) of the characters and leaves behind the grand scale of the search. The author also seems to have a somewhat dismissive view of rural communities and inhabitants.

Nonetheless, the story was engaging and a page turner. I recommend it to anyone with an interest in prospecting, diamonds, geology, or Arctic history.

I have been fascinated by Richard III since I saw on TV , when I was seven years old , the 1955 Laurence Olivier adaptation of the Shakespeare play.

In this book , Desmond Seward makes a compelling case for his theory that Richard III of England was indeed a bloodthirsty tyrant who cut down all who got in the way of his Machiavellian ambition , that the traditional view of Richard III (outlined dramtically by Shakespeare) is very near the truth.
The author believes King Richard to have been the cruellest tyrant to have ever occupied the English throne . Seward gives seemingly incontrovertible evidence that he did indeed murder his young nephews in the tower , shining a new light on the tragedy of these boys. He outlines how Richard almost undoubtedly murdered Henry VI and very possibly Henry's son too.
His death brought to an end , a nightmare for England , not least for Richard himself , who seward believes to have been highly paranoid , and disturbed by psychotic episodes.

Seward re-examines contemporary sources , and also Sir Thomas Mores life of the King , which contained much valubale information that Seward brought to light.
He gives us a history of events leading up to Richard's seizure of power , after the War of the Roses , analyses of the key power players in the England of the time producing the picture of a 'peculiarly grim young English precursor of Machiavelli's Prince'

Defenders of Richard III have criticized this work , but is undoubdetly a major component in shedding light on the life of Richard III and the England of the times.

Readable History, Great Subject, Naive Author.......2005-12-10

Reading this book is a good way to get to know the basic story of Richard III, and the related context of English history in the time of the "War of the Roses." To my mind, the greatest virtue of the book is Seward's recognition of Richard as a prince in the Machiavellian style: a ruthless, conniving tyrant. What is weakest in the book is the author's pronounced psychological naivete: even as he writes of Richard as an alert political strategist, willing to do anything to advance his own cause, the author interprets his attitudes and decisions as if they were being made by someone with average working-class values and education. Overall, though, the story is well-told, with a readable mix of engaging narrative and scholarly history.

The bias is smothering. .......2005-04-14

While Seward makes some convincing arguments and successfully rebuts some Ricardian explanations, he does so in a horribly pretentious manner. He makes the constant claim that Richard was unpopular, which may have been so, but he does not bother to use reliable sources to prove it. He is also guilty of using the words 'obviously' and 'plainly' while not giving the reader any inication why he thinks these things are so obvious and plain. An example of this is found when Seward states, "When speaking of Richard, Commynes uses the word 'proud' more than once. Plainly he employs it in the sense of vain glory or self delusion. Had he known the word 'hubris' he would have used that too." Be that as it may, Seward does not offer any proof as to why he believes the word 'proud' is used to mean self delusion, and his assumption that the writer would have used 'hubris' hints of Seward's own pride and arrogance. This neglect to explain basic charges runs throughout the entire book, which makes it an almost unbearable read to one simply trying to find out the truth, rather than wallow in anti-Ricardian sentiment. Almost all historians of Richard III are guilty of writing from bias, but it is not usually so suffocating as this.

Excellent accessible scholarly history.......2002-05-11

I got this as a result of seeing Ian McKellen's film version of the Shakespearean play. It left me wanting more History as well as more Drama. I had heard that Shakespeare was essentially writing anti-Richard propaganda, since the man who defeated him, Richmond, went on to become Henry VII grandfather of Queen Elizabeth. But while the truth is no doubt more complicated than the play suggests, Seward convincingly shows that Shakespeare got the essentials right even if he did take a few liberties. He doesn't merely elucidate the character of Richard himself, but of those around him. The Woodvilles, Ann, Catesby, Tyrell, Brackenbury, the Duke of Buckingham and Lord Stanley were all real players in Richard's rise and fall, well known at the time for their victimizations through or their contributions to his tyranny. (Catesby for example was known as the Cat in a popular rhyme of the day.) Seward gives an in depth though not necessarily complete view of the constraints and shared assumptions they were operating under which eventually leads to the characterization of the King himself. It's difficult to tell how much of Richard's tyranny stemmed from the bloodthirstiness of the times he lived in, or if good really triumphed over evil at Bosworth field, and Seward makes no assertions to that effect. But he does throw into sharp relief the flaws that earned Richard his bloody reputation, and they aren't saintly ones. He is also very clear cut about which primary sources he is drawing from, Thomas More, Dominic Mancini and the Croyland Chronicler, how they culled their information, and how he reads them. I'm sure there's a wealth of information on this subject, yet I found this book to be a very satisfying introduction.

Entertaining history and narrative.......2002-03-19

This is an entertaining mixture of historical story-telling, scholary gumshoe work, and criticism. No aspect overpowers the book, which makes it an interestingly told history, and a well-shaped argument for Seward's perspective of Richard III's reign.

Of course, so much of his work in the primary sources leads him to numerous conjectural qualifications. This state of affairs demonstrates why there is so much divergence of opinion on Richard III. However, if both Richard's contemporary subjects and their progeny have such a consistently malignant view of the man's rule, why go to such effort to rehabilitate (revisionize) him? It is obvious Richard's black legend is not solely a product of Tudor propaganda. The man simply did all the heavy lifting on establishing history's view of his reign.

Seward's book is a good read. It's not a purely speculative, breathless narrative of "Maybe this happened, then that ... probably," but an argued case that approaches all of the sources in the field, primary and modern. This book has the potential to become the definitive history of Richard III and his reign; it simply lacks the appeals to cliched romanticism that surround much work in English history.
