Book Description

This is the second volume of a series which began in 1978 with the aim, as stated then, of presenting information on the Papuasian flora in a concise and correlated form.

Many workers are now active in taxonomic work in the neighbouring Malesian region, mainly in connection with the Flora Malesiana project, in which the Rijksherbarium, Leiden, is involved. This assists the Flora project, since the regions overlap, but Papuasia includes the Bismarck Archipelago and Bougainville Island, which contain a number of species not found in Malesia.

I purchased two of these books while in Paris to bring back as gifts. While looking through the book on the way home I was very excited to see so many of the places I had traveled to. I wanted to share it with more friends and was glad to be able to purchase more copies from Amazon.com.

Dog in My Footsteps.......2006-05-01

Chrystal Sharp's life with her husband, her son, and all the various animals in her life in a small town by the sea in Africa
is amazing---it seems as if there is never a dull moment living a vet's wife's life. The animals that enter and exit their lives, both wild and domestic take their places in their hearts, and the reader's hearts as well. The adventure never stops, and the characters they meet throughout this book makes it an easy and enjoyable read.

Maybelle is a cockroach that lives under the refrigerator in the home of Myrtle and Herbert Peabody who like "everything to be JUST SO. No dust, no mess, and absolutely, positively NO BUGS." Maybelle "obeys The Rules: When it's light, stay out of sight; if you're spied, better hide; and most important of all, never meet with human feet." Maybelle who loved to eat was "tired of crumbs and spills" and desired "tasty" food and she wanted to eat that food off a plate. Her friend Henry the flea "lived and dined on the Peabody's cat and warned Maybelle, "If the Peabodys see you, they'll call the Bug Man." One day, the Peabody's have some guests over for dinner and Maybelle ends up in the soup; the antics go on in this amusing first chapter book as the Peabodys call in the Bug Man and move into a hotel. Mostly black and white illustrations mirror the humor of the story; in the style of the Jack Sprat nursery rhyme, Mr. and Mrs. Peabody are respectively large and thin. Maybelle wears a bright pink bow on the top of her head and a necklace around her neck and manages to look cute; in one illustration she looks quite bedraggled as she hangs from the cat's paw and in another, she sits on a spoon in front of a pair of eyes that look clearly outraged. Henry, a bloated grey blob is Maybelle's sidekick so he only appears in a few pictures; in one he hangs out with Maybelle under the refrigerator "as Mrs. Peabody's dreadful big feet moved around the kitchen." This story's entertaining, easy text will delight young readers.

Hilarious Bug with Heart!.......2007-09-11

My kids and I giggled through the whole book, and laughed so hard in a few spots we had to put it down to compose ourselves. The comedy is so physical you can almost see it as a movie, and the illustrations add a whole new light to it. This is more than a story about a bug. It's a story about setting goals and going for it, as well as a tale about friendship loyalty. Maybelle is one book I can read again and again to my kids.

Not ALL "Jehovah's Witnesses".......2007-06-27

While this gentleman's stand is certainly commendable and his story moving, there IS one aspect of the whole "Jehovah's Witnesses" in the concentration camps issue which is never touched upon by these books, but is very important.

Those in the camps referred to as "Jehovah's Witnesses" were in fact Bible Students (Bibelforschers); many whom were NOT affiliated with the WT, then or after. They were all labeled with the same "purple" triangle and lumped together. These faithful Bible Students who suffered and died in these camps too, NEVER associated with the Watchtower organization and were NEVER "Jehovah's Witnesses", a name not yet adopted at the time in Germany. Out of respect for these individuals this distinction SHOULD be made.

Worthwhile reading.......2007-04-19

There's not much I can add to the other reviewer's comments other than to say it's gratifying to know Max and his wife Simone (her autobiography is twice the length of her husband's and also worth reading) are still faithful and loyal Jehovah's Witnesses to this day.

Some witnesses survived the Nazi concentration camps only to succomb to materialism or immorality during the post-war times.

Max wasn't the only Jew to become one of Jehovah's Witnesses. I surmise that a Jew is more likely to become one of Jehovah's Witnesses than they are to become a Mormon. That would make an interesting study.

Better not bitter.......2007-01-10

Max overcame many obstacles to become a fine citizen. Many would have lost hope or became bitter. Truly a fine example for others facing hardships. I also read his wife's (Simone Arnold Liebster's book).

Excellent.......2006-08-10

I do not get to do pleasure reading often. I saw a newspaper article about this man who is still alive & speaking to groups around the world. I thought it might be interesting. What a powerful story of courage to challenge what he had been taught growing & believed was the truth while trying to preserve his own life. I think this is a must read for all that are interested in Nazi Germany. My children will read this book to see what faith in God really means.

A Sad But Beautiful Story.......2006-06-02

First off I am a Jehovah's Witness, and I LOVED this book. While it does have many sad moments, the overall story is beautiful!Why is it beautiful? Because amid the harshest cruelest of circumstances, it is possible to still expierence hope, faith, and love, when one applies Bible principles.

The Fighting Kings of Wessex.......2002-03-01

This is a fascinating book that has a lot of detail in it, and my only criticism of this book is that it gets somewhat detailed due to so many people being discussed, but it is very well written, and I enjoyed it very much; I wish to thank Combined Books for re-printing the book in 1996. History books like this enrich my life, and this book comes close to a five star review: it is higher than 4 stars, but I could not state that in the rating.

Between the reign of Alfred in the late ninth century and the arrival of the Normans in 1066, a unique set of images of kingship and queenship was developed in Anglo-Saxon England, images of leadership that centred on books, authorship and learning rather than thrones, sword and sceptres. Focusing on the cultural and historical contexts in which these images were produced, this book explores the reasons for their development, and their meaning and function within both England and early medieval Europe. It explains how and why they differ from their Byzantine and Continental counterparts, and what they reveal about Anglo-Saxon attitudes towards history and gender, as well as the qualities that were thought to constitute a good ruler. It is argued that this series of portraits, never before studied as a corpus, creates a visual genealogy equivalent to the textual genealogies and regnal lists that are so much a feature of late Anglo-Saxon culture. As such they are an important part of the way in which the kings and queens of early medieval England created both their history and their kingdom. CATHERINE E.
