semi-interesting; sloppy writing.......2003-08-11
like a previous posting, i was gratified by some of the details included by the author. however, i generally found the writing to be sloppy, and dry. the overall feel of the book is also uneven-- for example, the princess diana section towards the end seems it fit to tell us the origin of the word "paparazzi", yet there is very little about the continuing mayoral politics, the rise of anti-immigrant feeling in paris, etc.
Poorly organized and uneven.......2002-07-10
The first 90% of the book is an unevenly written 2000 year chronology of the city. The chapters proceed from pre-Roman to modern times. This makes it very difficult to find information from different eras on specific landmarks. The style is also very dry. My point is that the information isn't presented in a way that a traveller would want to access it--'I'm in Place de la Concorde--what's happened here over the centuries?' Other books I've read like this will take you through suggested walks in different neighborhoods talking about their history e.g. 'Turn left down this street and you're looking at Napolean's house etc...' The book also ignores or barely mentions the historical basis for many popular characters of Paris historical fiction. The musketeers get half a sentance and Victor Hugo's stories don't fare much better. The last 10% attempts to give some more detailed information about Notre Dame and a couple other landmarks but it's too little, too late. I did learn a lot of interesting material about the city. But I would recommend spending your time with a Parisian's memoir or work of fiction based in Paris. I think you would get much more enjoyment for your investment.
A Historical Glimpse into Paris.......2002-06-09
I first encountered this book in a college bookstore among the texts. It was required reading for a curriculum-based trip to France. I was surprised to find that though nestled among texts, this book was a refreshingly light read with insightful tidbits into Paris' grand history. Punctuated with simple sketches for illustrations, the book offers a great deal of behind-the-scenes information which enriches any trip to Paris let along anyone with a crush on the City of Light. I frequently include the book in my packing for overseas trips because it makes fun reading among travel companions as we tour the city or to discuss over a cup of café. The history in this book is simplified enough to be a pleasant read (not overwhelming or at all like stereo instructions), but in-depth enough to make you feel like an expert. It really enriches any visit to Paris to understand the city's history and this book is a great way to get an overview of what Paris has gone through over the ages.
Read this book before you go.......1999-02-16
Like most people, I didn't pay a lot of attention in world history class. If you ever slept through a lecture on the French Revolution, you should read this book. It looks dry, but is actually very witty; the author has a fine sense of irony. You can't help but snicker at the author's detail of the revolutionaries storming the Bastille, only to find just 6 people locked up... or finding out how Robespierre received a substantial award in college for excellent academic performance. A good overview of Parisian history from 53 BC to the present. The book also includes a section on the history of major monuments and museums, such as Notre Dame de Paris and the Eiffel Tower.

If you want to see photos of figurines, get the guide. If you want accuracy and information about the pieces get another guide.
1. There are pieces included in the guide that were never produced.
2. There are a lot of mark errors throughout the guide.
3. Basic PM information in the guide is completely wrong which lends you to believe that the authors are definitely not PM collectors.

Great guide but incomplete........2007-04-02
I'm glad to finally have a book to use as a guide to how much my collection is worth. However, I felt I couldn't give it 5 stars because the book is incomplete. I have pieces in my collection that aren't even listed in this book. I enjoyed reading the information about the creators and the inspiration for some of the pieces.
Precious Moments Collector's Guide.......2007-02-20
Terrific book with each figurine in color. One reason for not giving it 5 stars is the way the book is set up. The figurines are placed in figurine mold number order. It would have been better to place them in categories such as regular Precious Moments, Baby, Wedding/ Anniversary, Nativity and Mini Nativity, Club pieces and Ornaments. It would enable finding your pieces much faster than using the mold number.
Finally a new edition!.......2007-02-12
It was great to finally come across a new Precious Moments price guide. The layout was very easy to follow and the indexes a huge help. There were some different price variations from the last Greenbook edition (1999), which this book showed a lower value than 1999. I did not give 5 stars because there were markings on my collection of older pieces that were not listed in the book. All in all, every Precious Moments collector should have a copy of this edition!

Good try but look for another book.......2003-12-19
This book as some good information but a lot of misinformation regarding dates of release/retirement/status. The pictures are pretty fuzzy so don't count on detail. A lot of the information was copied directly from the old Greenbook and Rosie Well's price guides. No original thoughts contained in this guide. Where did those Secondary Market prices come from? Little research and a lot of regurgitation involved here. Look for another guide.

An extrodinary book about a fantastic garden place. It's been said that some travelers go to Italy to see Italian art and history, while other travel to see Italians and Italian life. This book gives a glimpse into a fantastic rural garden and life built by the owners of Venzano. It is a serene garden, and this book captures well its intense images. You have to travel there yourself to sense the other delights--fragrances, winds, and twilight dinners on the terrace. Examine this book if you want to sense the rural life in the lovely Tuscan hills.

The mystery continues..........2007-06-25
I grew up in Carmel, and my mother used to drive us along Scenic Drive and point out to us where Jean Arthur lived. We'd sometimes see her walking along that oceanside road, her face always wrapped in a scarf. Mom would talk about the actress being a recluse ("hermit" was the word used then) in a framework that assumed pathology: there must have been something wrong with the actress. And she could not have been happy, either: she never even had children! How could someone do without constant company?
All my life I wondered about this enigmatic recluse. I was fascinated by her reputed traits, which seemed very normal & healthy to me and with which I strongly identified (including her obsessive love & protection of animals). I bought this book more for an understanding of Arthur's personality than her career, although I also loved her movie presence. I was delighted to see the author NOT oversimplify her personality but instead explore all possible causes of her withdrawn nature & sudden walkouts, including the positive causes, and emphasize her fierce individualism and solid integrity, even though on the surface she paid dearly for both. (On a deeper level, she probably became truer to herself.) Oller presents all plausible theories objectively and leaves it to the reader to choose (although I couldn't help but wonder about the additional possibilities of hypoglycemia, of which she had many symptoms, and panic attacks, conditions that might have been treated if diagnosed, maybe relieving some of her suffering). I prefer the theory that she simply did what she wanted and followed some inner direction and that she was predominantly content.
This is a thorough, well-researched account of her career and her place in Hollywood and stage history. But to me, it was even more valuable as an affirmation of her brave values and strengths and her search for meaning and truth in a time where such search, for women, was discouraged.
Great Actress!! Sad Woman:(.......2007-06-09
I was really glad to get some information on Jean Arthur (hard to find) She had a sad long life but that wasn't John Oller fault. Don't blame the messenger. She was a great actress and I will still love her in all the movies that she was in..But you know her and Mary Martin did look alot alike (single white female) remember the movie. Scary!!
An Intriguing Glimpse Inside Jean Arthur's World.......2005-06-17
I can't imagine a tougher classic star to write about; nobody really knew Jean Arthur as the title implies. John Oller is to be commended for successfully championing her story and bringing it to light for classic film fans everywhere. It's an easy read by virtue of Mr. Oller's flowing narrative and ample research, and difficult to read emotionally at times because of the nature of Miss Arthur's sad yet intriguing Hollywood exisistence. Get to know Miss Arthur ~ read this book!
Sad story.......2004-12-06
This is a well written but sad story of a woman's life. Jean Arthur (Gladys Greene) never managed to fit in anywhere. Not Hollywood, not teaching, not the theater, not family. She left a glittering film legacy, but I just felt sad for her. Full of energy, full of life, yet so alone.

I was absolutely satisfied with the infos I've found in this book. A truly amanzing biography. In John Oller's amazing job you can find ALL the things you didn't know about this mysterious Hollywood legend. From her parent's relatives to her movie plots, from the men (and women) of her life to the children she didn't have. Every Jeany's fan should read it! ;)
