Loving Scotland!.......2002-06-10
Having just returned from my 2nd trip to Scotland, and this time touring the Highlands, this book was by far the most complete and comprehensive of any guide book I used. It gave phone numbers, things not to miss, and even included info on "things to do on Skye when it rains" (which it did almost daily). I appreciated the maps and the little historical notes they wrote. I would recommend this book to anyone going to The Highlands for their first - or tenth - time. The only other thing you will need is an English - Gaelic dictionary.
Book Description
For courses in Modern Latin America.
Organized thematically, this text offers a clear narrative that weaves together the story of an entire region, with coverage of broad themes and regional diffences.
Despite the great diversity within the Latin America, there is a common theme that characterizes the sweep of history in the region. The original author of the text, E. Bradford Burns, phrased the problem as the paradox that poor people inhabit rich lands. The reason for the paradox is that a tiny group of elites confuses the nation's well-being with their own.
When this text was first published in 1972, there were very few texts on Latin America, and the ones that existed largely read like catalogs of historical events. There are others now, but this textbook is still a leader in the market because of its clear thematic organization, a central narrative that tells a single story, albeit with many variations.
Co-author Julie A. Charlip is very committed to continuing his legacy. Despite changes in research, interpretations, theories, etc., his basic premise is still the most accurate and succinct, providing the best framework for approaching the region.
Customer Reviews:
worst history book I've ever tried.......2002-11-21
This book seems like it was written by an 8th grader. Disorganized, it often presents an incongruous or dislocated sentence at the end of a paragraph leaves me wondering "what?" Inconsistent and often juvenile. He skips around and uses words that are not defined, unless maybe you are already a Latin American history buff. I am taking this for a college course and wish I wasn't taking the course just because of this text!
Perhaps the best current 1-vol. survey of its subject........1998-12-28
The late E. Bradford Burns was one of the most versatile historians of Latin America, and this book contains the fruits of his 30+ years of research and teaching. All textbook surveys require choices of content and emphasis, but here Burns's have resulted in a superior volume. His is an interpretive and thematic perspective, permitting an integrated approach to the entire continent. This works better than having discrete chapters on specific countries, which may or may not be the focus of a particular course or single reader. Burns stresses the importance of the region's institutions in shaping its history, and gives due attention to the 19th century, often a "forgotten century" compared with the 16th or 20th. A central organizing theme is the struggle between elites and folk communities, a continuous factor in the continent's history. As a Brazilianist, Burns gives better coverage of that major country than does any other text, without slighting Spanish America. The author's prose, while not exactly scintillating, is clear and readable, and his quietly humanistic values further heighten our interest. Drawbacks: reduced coverage of pre-19th century period; little citation of primary sources; and a perfunctory stab at incorporating work on women's history. Nevertheless, this is a superb text for any university course on Modern Latin America or Latin America Since Independence, and I found that it works very well in my own classes. Having canvassed all the major texts (which have many merits of their own), I recommend this as the finest within the inevitable limits of any one-volume work.
Excellent Source.......1998-07-11
Used this book as textbook in advanced (IB) History of the Americas; very authoritative and complete, must say one of the clearest books I've seen on this subject; a definitive narrative of Latin American history.

Customer Reviews:
Culpeper's Complete Herbal.......2007-01-10
The book was in excellent condition and arrived in very short order. I had, however, expected it to be a bit more of a modern resource book. No worries, it was reasonably priced, I'm keeping it and pleased to add it to my library. I'm a new student to his works. Now that I'm up to speed on his style, I am interested in obtaining Culpeppers Colorful Herbal, if anyone knows anyone who has one in good condition?
17th Century Herbal Remedies.......2005-06-25
This book played an important and yet controversial role between formal medicine and herbalism.
Nicholas Culpeper(1616-1654) studied medicine at Cambridge, but gave up his studies when his fiancée was killed in a thunderstorm. Culpeper eventually set up his own healing practice near London. He was moved by the suffering of the poor and decided to help the them by selling medicines to them at a very cheap price and encouraged them to use local species.
In the 17th century, the physicians were leaning more toward non-botanical medications such as mercury, arsenic iron and sulfur etc. It is most likely that the physicians of that day resented Culpeper's popularity and considered him a threat, since be made their secrets accessible to the common person--therefore they tried to discredit him.
The people of England due to his genuine concern for them loved Culpeper. The colonist took his herbal to the New World as a medical reference and guide of when to plant and harvest these medical plants.
His mistake was he threatening the near monopoly on medical knowledge that the College of Physicians enjoyed.
This book contains a comprehensive description of nearly all herbs along with descriptions of their medicinal properties and instructions on preparing and using them to treat many different illnesses. It also included precise botanical illustrations. For 300 years this book was the standard for herbal remedies.
A view on Medieval/Renaissance Herbalism and Medicine.......2000-11-21
I first heard of this book as being an excellent primary source for herbs and herbalism from the 16/17th Centuries.
It is very comprehensive and aside from a listing of each herb and its properties, it has several sections teaching the fundiments of medicine of the time. It covers:
* how a herb is assigned to a planet
* how a degree of strength is determined and what it means
* what 'humours' it affects and what 'humours' (bodily fluid systems) are
* and much much more.
If you are looking for a source to use for alternate medicine then this is NOT the best starting place. There are better works of a modern nature out there for that. However, as a back-up resource or a way of learning about the time when medicine was still holistic and not too scentific then this is he book for you.
The Wordsworth edition is in paperback and easy on the pocket. This publisher takes certain classic works and keeps them in print in small runs from time to time by demand. This means that although the book may be not immediately available, it will beome available again in the near future.
I hope this helps you.
Culpeper's Complete Herbal.......2000-01-09
If you have an interest in Herbs and their culinary, mystic and medicinal usages, both modern and historical, then this IS the book for you. It is beautifully illustrated and text is written in both medieval English and modern English.
Each plant (it includes some fruits and trees as well) is pictured and the habitat is described. Along with each description is any affinity to a ruling planet as well.
My only critisism is that it contains a great deal of jargon, you will need to read up on herbalism per se to understand how to make tinctures etc. That said the book is a reference to the plants not the art.
I have had my (well thumbed copy)for over 10 years now and it is a constant companion to my interests in the natural power of the Earth and her fruits.

Book Description
Jennifer O'Neill knows all there is to know about life in the fast lane. Even before she skyrocketed to movie stardom at age twenty-two, she had already experienced more than most women twice her age: international modeling at fifteen, marriage at seventeen, and motherhood at nineteen. Then came Summer of '42.
If her career was already a dream come true, however, her private nightmare had just begun. The dark years that followed saw scandal and sorrow offset by beauty and style: eight marriages, nine miscarriages, a near-fatal gunshot wound, and three other near-death experiences. Even motherhood proved a painful trial when one of her husbands fell into the abyss of sexual abuse, with Aimee, the eldest of her three children, as his victim.
But Jennifer O'Neill is a survivor -- by the grace of God. Now, with her faith intact, she looks back on the roller coaster of her past with an unsparing honesty tempered with compassion, humor, and a new understanding of herself. Her story is an unforgettable drama of a beautiful, intelligent, talented, whimsical, yet deeply troubled woman redeemed in the end by the gift of her spiritual awakening.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting in a pathetic sort of way.......2006-02-11
I am fascinated at the eye popping psychotic life this woman lead. That said, she is overly dramatic and annalyitical beginning with her second paragraph. Nevermind the details of her life, she is not a good writer. She certainly has a story to tell but ought to have hired a proffessional to do it for her, some one to delete all of her wierd similies and tell her when she is taking herself too seriously. She was a terrible mother, her kids could all write books too. Maybe they did...
Good book, lousy proofreading.......2005-09-25
Interesting story of the life of a celebrity. However, nearly every page has at least one type and numerous pages have typo after typo. It's hard to believe a publishing company would print a book that, literally, appears not be have been proofread: words like held instead of help, mean instead of meant, 'eds' left off where required, and on and on and on. If you are a fast reader this has a tendency to slow you down a bit when you have to skim twice to get the meaning of thought after thought.
An interesting read because she's so screwed up!.......2004-06-26
Has anyone noticed that most of the rave reviews of this book are by devout Christians?
Now -- For those of us who are NOT religious, O'Neill's book is interesting mainly because this woman is a jaw-dropping psychological mess. I feel truly sorry for her children, since O'Neill is obviously someone who should never have had kids. As another reviewer pointed out, she married every man who showed any interest in her, had as many kids as possible, and immediately dumped them in the care of whoever happened to be handy -- even people who had proven themselves untrustworthy or even criminal! I hope that her born-again Christianity has made her a little bit easier for her family to live with.
I also was a bit disappointed that there were not more pictures of this very beautiful woman -- especially since her looks seem to be her only redeeming quality!
Have You Fallen? You Can Be Forgiven Too.......2003-11-12
We all have a unique and special life story. This is part of Jennifer's story. We can learn much from people's life stories - a lot from her's.
If the Almighty God can forgive a woman who was made as many mistakes as Jennifer, certainly there is hope for the rest of us if we come to him on his terms! If you know you've made mistakes and want hope and encouragement for your own life, read her story.
I Would Like to Hear the Other Side.......2002-05-25
I seems strange to me that someone so beautiful, talented, compassionate, understanding, smart, kind, giving, etc., etc. etc., could run thru eight husbands (or was it nine?). I'd like to hear a bit of their side of the story. This can't be as all black and white as it seems.
