Book Description
Bryophyte Biology provides a comprehensive yet succinct overview of the morphology, systematics, ecology, and evolution of hornworts, liverworts, and mosses. A distinguished set of contributors provide state-of-the-art summaries of the most recent advances in bryology, with rich citation of the current literature. Revised classifications for the liverworts and mosses are presented that depart significantly from previous arrangements. These novel classifications reflect the results of recent phylogenetic analyses and include exhaustive lists of accepted genera with their familial placements. Accessible and well-illustrated overviews of morphology are provided for each group, with subsequent contributions focusing on current areas of active research, including developmental biology, molecular genetics, ecology, and microevolution. In addition to reviews of the most current literature, the chapters provide abundant reference to classical studies in bryology that will help those new to the topic to develop an historical perspective within which recent developments can be viewed.

Book Description
The mosses (Bryophatea, Musci) are a diverse and widely distributed group of land plants. Mosses are attractive experimental plants because they exhibit the traditional attributes of good model systems (i.e. ease of growth and maintenance, fast generation time, and amenable genetics) with the added advantage of a haploid gametophyte that allowed developmental mutants to be recovered with relative ease. And, in one of the most exciting developments in Plant Biology, efficient homologous recombination occurs in the moss
Physcomitrella patens. The ability to perform efficient homologous recombination (i.e. gene knock-outs) in
P. patens is at present unique amongst all plants and represents an extremely powerful technique for the functional analysis of many plant genes. From evolution and development to the homologous recombination and the creation of novel molecular tools, mosses are being used to elucidate fundamental biological processes in plants. This book provides a synopsis of the outstanding
basic research being conducted using mosses as a model multi-cellular eukaryote.
Customer Reviews:
Too much reliance on microscopic detail.......2006-09-13
I bought this book to identify mosses found in Maine when on vacation from Europe. I had a magnifying glass at my disposal (10x, 20x) but found that the keys started asking questions about microscopic details very early on. This made it (too) difficult to get at least to the right family. Liverworts worked better than mosses.

Good for the Business Traveler.......2007-08-01
This guide offers information and other important details of the area but lacks any real depth as far as the "Off the Beaten Path" stuff goes.If you need a quick list of restaurants or hotels it is good. I would not buy it for backroads travel though, much better guides out there for that.

One of the nicest dog books I read.......2002-12-08
I don't own this book, it's just in the library, but I instantly became addicted to it. The pictures are beautiful and colorful, and the info is accurate. I love the book that I can't hold it if somebody else gets the book! I make it a habit to get the book first. Too bad the book was sort of ruined by kids and the librarians won't let anybody read it because they are fixing it. I am still waiting for the book to be fixed!
nice pictures and entertaining descriptions.......2000-03-12
This book is large and describes a wide range of breeds. Its descriptions of the temperments and history of the breeds is entertaining and helpful. The book however is written in British English and its focus is on breeds that the British enjoy and are familiar with.
A Joyous Romp with your Favorite Fido.......1998-07-23
Larkin's book will bring out the dog lover in even the hardest of hearts: the lovable snub-nosed Pug, the jolly grinning Samoyed, and the gentle brown-eyed German Shepherd are among the many friendly faces you'll encounter in this full-color guide to dogs. A section is devoted to each breed recognized by the British and American Kennel Clubs, and all the dogs are wonderfully photographed. Dr. Larkin's summaries of the various breeds are simple and truthful, if a bit brief. Though one should not consult this book alone when choosing to participate in complicated doggy matters such as breeding, grooming, or canine health, it makes a wonderful general reference for those with a love of canines.

Customer Reviews:
I HAVE HAD SEVERAL GOOD YEARS OF USE OUT OF THIS ONE.......2006-06-17
I have owned and used this garden guide from quite a number of years now (bought it near the time of it's publication) and have never spent a better dollar when it comes to my garden. This is one of the most comprehensive works of the subject of gardening I am aware of and to top it off, it is even readable! The format makes finding information quite easy. The illustrations are great, being not only pretty, but quite useful to boot. With over five acres of flower gardens, vegtable gardens and fruit trees, I find my self constantly returning to this volume for information. Cannot recommend this one highly enough.
SLICK. INFORMATIVE. COLORFUL. DISHES THE DIRT, INDEED!.......2003-01-06
Spring is about to be sprung, and we cannot think of a better way to get a head start than with this door stop (or murder weapon, depending on your take) masquerading as a book. (Carry this one around and your green thumbs will be black-and-blue.) But if it's comprehensiveness you want, things are growing right here. Everything -- and we mean everything -- gardening gurus and wannabes need to know is here. There are handy plant guides, zone and frost maps, detailed garden plans, illustrated troubleshooting guide, sections on rotating crops, creating topiaries, plant diseases, planting bulbs, composing color, choosing garden accessories -- 1,000 slick, color pages covering more than 600 entries. Just add water.
Complete is Right.......2001-08-13
I love this book it has everything you could possibly need to know about gardening. From starting seedlings to what plants are best for your zone. It's big with tons of great information and simple instructions.
The Complete Garden Guide.......2001-04-03
I hate using an overly-used quote, but if you only get one book on gardening, then make it this one! It's great for beginners as well as intermediates. It's filled with wonderful tips on designing and maintaining lawns and gardens, along with how to deal with pests and diseases. The writing of the book is easy to understand, and there are hundreds of pictures explaining layouts and designs. This book is ideal for anyone who wishes to grow vegetables, flowers, trees, and shrubs. The largest section breaks down the plants by annuals, perennials, wildflowers, etc with the most complete explaination of plants, where to grown them, and how to grow them that I have ever seen. Just about every page has a gorgeous photo or diagram on it. My one and only complaint is that some of the tiny flowers on bushes or shrubs would have been easier to see if their picture had been printed in a larger size, but I consider this so minor compared to the almost 1000 pages of information. I highly recommend this book!
Super Deluxe Volume Tells It All !.......2000-04-08
This gorgeous 1,000 page library book weighing over 7 pounds gives the most up-to-date info on topics ranging from: Designing Your Garden, Furnishing Your Landscape and Designing With Plants, to Problem Solving, Coping With Garden Pests and Growing a Healthy Lawn. Loaded with beautiful, large, full color pictures on every page. Easy reading and a complete index leads you to answers to all of your garden questions. THE book for garden experts and novices alike. You'll want this in your library.

Good Historical book, but misses the mark with Aquinas.......2000-08-19
Here is another text by William Lane Craig that deals with the issues of Divine Foreknowledge, human freedom, and future contingents. This is a very academic text and expects the reader to have a background knowledge in the philosophies at hand. However, it is a good text to read for the issues. Craig covers some of the major philosophers who have tackled the problems of Divine foreknowledge and future contingents. The philosophers covered are, Aristotle, Augustine, Boethius, Aquinas, John Duns Scotus, William Ockham, Luis de Molina, and Francisco Suarez. Craig covers what each philosopher taught, the works which each philosopher wrote regarding the issue at hand, and gives criticisms and agreements regarding each of the views espoused. The bibliography is very thorough containing mainly primary works, but including secondary texts as well. The only downfall in which I was able to detect was Craig's description of some of the things espoused by Aquinas. For instance, Craig declares that, "In De veritate Aquinas explains that what is necessary can be known even when it will happen in the future, as is the case with an astronomer's knowledge of a coming eclipse, but a contingent cannot be known as future because it can be impeded before it is brought into being." (page 101-102) This is simply not true, Aquinas does not espouse such a thing in De Veritate (On Truth) nor any of his other works for that matter. While I am not an expert on Aquinas in this area, I have done enough research to know that Aquinas would not suggest such a thing. Nonetheless, overall Craig gives a somewhat fair assessment of Aquinas, but there are a few things on which he just seems to miss the boat. However, all the chapters are very informative and helpful with excellent references to help the reader move into further study and research.

Depressing.......2006-04-12
I read the book from cover to cover. It's really a depressing book. I always had the hots for this man. I think he was a talent and very good looking man. I've been depress this past year. My lover didn't want me, He used me. I was used by my friends. I had no one to turn too. I have to take care of my sick mother. But I know Drugs is not the answer. When I was growing up I was treated like dog doo. I had nothing! I was offer many times drugs when I was young, But I had my self respect not touching them. My grandfather had a say, The differents between an animal and a human is, A human has a brain
to think first!
SAD AND TRAGIC.......2006-03-11
It's unfortunate that jon seemed to have no one in his life to at least attempt to help him. I couldn't help feeling sorry for him. why was he never able to make the connection to his self-destructive behavior and his abuse as a child? perhaps because he was unable to stay clean and sober for only a few weeks at a time. reading this book, it was difficult to separate truth from fiction, he rambles on, full of self-delusion, fooling no one. I had heard of his death before I saw him on an erotic awards show video, obviously drunk, I listened as this doomed and damaged muscle-man stumbled through his presentation. so painful to watch, such a sad ending to a life. the book was also in desperate need of an editor.
Bizarre stream of consciousness non-auto biography.......2006-02-25
If someone is going to write an auto biography, they should at least have the decency to attempt to write fact and not fiction (this is not "A Million Little Pieces").
I knew "Jon Vincent," albeit not very well. This book isn't about Jon Vincent. It is about who Jon Vincent imagined himself to be.
Within a couple of paragraphs of each other, he makes contradictory statements. His parents weren't involved.....then all of a sudden they were dutiful and supportive.
Vincent says he saw the book as part of his twelve step program, but the problem with his twelve step program was that he continued to lie to himself.
The writing in the book is very stream of consciousness - which, I'll admit has its place, and it may have its place here. The problem is that the writing is juvenile - not childish - but juvenile. This is the self agrandizing high school jock we all knew and if not for his musculature, we would have tried to knock some sense into him.
Pompous is a good word. Braggadocious is another. It's not the stories he relays in the book that warrant my contempt, it's the way in which they are delivered. He seems to want to impress us with both his manliness and hetero-esque thinking and behavior. It's as if he's trying to prove to all those who knew him and who read about him that he was NOT the homo that appeared in dozens of gay porn films. While this is what makes this book a NON autobiography, it is also possibly what raises it to a different level. If the reader is able to see the self-denial and overt conceit in the writing, then possibly it is a great insight to Jon's psychological nature. But it is a very poor autobiography.
Jon died after this book was written - he overdosed. Should we feel sorry for his death? Yes. However, I don't feel the same pity for him as I do for the deaths of others who had put their lives to good use. Jon had a self destructive nature that he did not keep in check and that led to his demise.
a train wreck of a story. . . ........2005-09-06
. . . and like a train wreck it's horrible, it's awful, you wish you'd never seen it-- and you can't look away.
The book is made up almost entirely of transcriptions of Jeffrey Vickers' (AKA Jon Vincent) taped statements and don't seem to be edited much. It is very 'stream of consciousness' and at times difficult to follow, even though the editor laid it out (as much as he could) in chronological order. Jeff is brutally honest at times, and at other times (at least self-) deceptive, but through it all, he hammers home his one message: stay away from drugs.
The casual tone in which he describes incredible debaucheries (the description of one of his copraphiliac 'clients' will make most readers phsyically ill) actually heightens the horrors of his drug addiction. Here was a man blessed with looks, an incredible physique, athletic ability, charm, and intelligence (not the kind of intelligence that could have sent rockets into space or composed a symphony, but certainly he was no dummy) and he squandered it all, quite literally, all of it.
The censoring of genitalia in the photos actually seems unnecessary and in some ways makes the photos even seedier.
Personally I would have liked a bit more input from those who knew Jeffrey (and his alter-ego Jon) and more of an epilogue-- what happened to Jeffrey after death? Was he mourned by anyone? Where was he laid to rest? What became of his only son? On the other hand, the stark and austere finale of the book resonates very powerfully-- Jon is living, talking to us, exhorting us, begging us, and then suddenly-- he's gone. Someone who might have been a star athlete, who might have inspired others as athletes can do, must instead, at BEST, hope for 'cautionary example' status in death. Jeff Vickers is no hero. But maybe his story might keep some other disaffected young and confused gay man from selling his beauty and seeking escape from the pain of his own personal hell on earth through drugs and parties.
A difficult read.......2005-07-25
This book was a difficult read. It was like wanting to stare at a car accident...No matter how depressing this was and how I disliked Jon more and more I had to finish reading it, though at times was tempted to just give up.
The writting is chaotic and Jon is so un-likable there was nothing in this book that I could feel for....
