5th edition.......2006-05-04
I purchased a copy of the fifth edition sometime last year and keep it on the dash of my vehicle - to have handy while traveling. I found it contains details of local "hidden treasures" that are usually only discovered by the locals of the given community. I loaned it to a friend and now he is ordering his copy.

Texas - Off the Beaten Path (3rd Edition).......2002-06-19
This book is very handy when searching the back roads for interesting information, buildings, history, etc. of Texas.
I ordered the book as "used" at a substantial savings over the "new" price. The book is actually a new copy of the 3rd Edition. There is now a 4th edition out, and that is probably the reason for the price. The book is full of places I intend to visit that I had no idea existed before.
Shipping from the vendor (Ed Marks) was extremely timely, and I was happy with the condition of the book when it arrived.
In Texas, Some Roadrunners are Eleven Feet Tall..........2000-03-28
If you're planning to travel at all throughout the Lone Star State, this book will be an indispensable guide for your travels.
Sure, we can all find Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, but what about the 11 foot roadrunner in Fort Stockton? Or the statue of Popeye in Crystal City? During the winter you can see migrating bald eagles on Lake Buchanan (where?), and the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is the only place in the United States where you can see a Chachalaca.
If you have a destination in mind, this book will tell you about the attractions and oddities nearby (and Texas has oddities!). If you're undecided about where to go, the book can provide a fun and informative itinerary.
Being Texans by choice, my wife and I frequently take trips around the state. Texas is full of natural beauty and interesting sights. This book helps you fully use and enjoy your time with Texas.
This is not only a book of travel excursions..........1999-01-19
June Naylor Rodriguez's 2nd Edition of Texas: Off the beaten Path is not only a book of travel excursions, but also includes Texas trivia and tidbits of Texas history. My favorite part of the book is a chapter called Wildest West Texas. Using the recommendations in the book, my husband and I enjoyed a part of Texas we had always wanted to see and probably would not have known of all the local places to visit had it not been for Rodriguez's suggestions. Without the book we would not have known where to go or what to see. If we had done the Big Bend without this book, I doubt that we would have seen all that we did. Hats off to June Naylor Rodriguez.
Traveling in Texas? Don't leave home without this book........1999-01-03
We boarded a plane at Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport and flew to Midland-Odessa. From there we went to Ft. Stockton. We took the books advice and visited the Annie Riggs Memorial Museum on South Main Street. Paisano Pete was there on Main Street to welcome us. We almost didn't eat at Sarah's, the oldest restaurant in town because it didn't lookvery inviting. But since it was in the book we decided to give it a try. It was great! Mexican food at its finest. The owners were so nice and let us take a picture with them. Then we went on down to Marathon and stayed at the recommended Gage Hotel. After the shock of no T.V. wore off we were able to enjoy the atmosphere. Marathon has a population of 800. In the morning we were on our way to Big Bend National Park. Without the book we would not have known to go to Hot Springs, Boquillas, Dagger Flat, Dugout Wells, and the Chisos Basin where we stayed the night at the Chisos Mountain Lodge. Our winding, up and down road, took us to Study Butte and the Roadrunner Deli. My favorite was our stop in Terlingua. I didn't know this was a ghost town. I always thought it was jumping because of the chili cook-off held there every year. An old movie house called the Starlight Theatre Restaurant offered dinner and entertainment. We drove on and looked for the lights of Marfa. In Marfa we visited the El Paisano Hotel which boasted guests such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and John F. Kennedy. It was also the home of Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean, and Dennis Hopper while they were making the film Giant. Texas trivia from the book stated that in 1996 Martha Stewart was in Marfa for five days working out a barbecue layout for her magazine. Next we traveled on to Ft. Worth and the McDonald Observatory. Everything was more fun because we stayed at the 100-year old Limpia Hotel. We drove from Ft. Davis to the airport and home. If we had done the Big Bend without the guidance of Texas: Off the Beaten Path, we would not have seen all that we did. Hats off to June Naylor Rodriguez.

Great reference book.......2003-08-01
I bought this book before a trip to the Hill Country this past spring. One of the author's suggestions, which turned out to be the highlight of our trip, was to drive the Willow City Loop - we ended up driving it twice because it was so beautiful. We would have never found it without this book, and I've bought several other books similar to this one since our trip and not one of them mentions it.
Great Resource to discovering Texas.......2003-03-14
I found this book on a roadtrip to West Texas and it became an indespensible resource for discovering Texas. Not only did we find many side trips while in the Permian Basin of West Texas, it opened a new window into the Hill Country around Austin, we visited many places that we would never have known existed. A companion book on was an indespensible part of a recent road trip I took with my kids through Wyoming. You cannot say you truly know a place unless you own one of these books for the state in which you live. The books open a whole new world of weekend excursions to places and things odd, quirky, historic and wonderful. I highly recommend any in this series.

A balanced presentation combining theory, concepts, and tutorials is at the heart of this introduction to 3D computer modeling that is written to the latest version of Rhinocerosµ, Release 3. Special emphasis is given to understanding theoretical issues on NURBS (nonuniform rational B-splines) curves and surfaces as well as practical issues on the use of Rhinoceros to construct and design 3D free-form models. Real-world applications of NURBS modeling and step-by-step Rhino tutorials help acquaint novices with key features and functions of the software. Advanced users will enjoy the comprehensive nature of the material as a reference for using Rhinoceros to work on their industrial and engineering design projects.

If you want to learn Rhino ...........2006-09-08
This book provides plenty of examples, grouped in a context in which they will be used. Some Nurbs, modeling theory and troubleshooting tips. Enough to answer questions as you go through the text but not so much as to be overwhelming.
The only fly in the ointment in my opinion was the chapter on Flamingo. I thought that chapter was organized in an awkward manner.
Horrible.......2004-06-06
Do not buy this book. Instead buy the online Rhino video tips from Mcneel. I bought this book expecting to learn something only to discover that the stuff I learned was useless.
The author spends the majority of the book explaining in detail--like the help menu--the various functions of Rhino, and NURBS in general. He then attempts to use every possible command to create the joystick, toothbrush, toy car, and shoe projects.
Save your time and money.......2004-03-25
Numerous omissions and typos made for a very frustrating read. Mislabeled drawings and missing or erroneous instructions made exercises difficult to follow. Fundamental exercises were superficial and fragmented without logical development or context making retention difficult. Rhino's supplied Level 1 and Level 2 Training Materials are far superior in all regards. Don't waste your time and money. The publisher and author were e-mailed regarding problems but no response.
Somewhat Helpful.......2003-12-13
This book has a good overview and general explanation of how things are designed in 3D. It takes you through the commands and tools step by step, with surprisingly few misprints. The CD that comes with it has the free demo program, and some tutorials. However, the lack of a glossary makes it an unnecessarily tedious read for anyone not familiar with advanced geometry and math. My dictionary wasn't much help. More serious omissions became apparent as I tried to use Rhino, like the very short entry on Boolean Unions. He doesn't even mention that they can fail to work, much less offer any solutions. This book saved me some time learning basic tools, and helped with general concepts, and is probably better than not having a text at all. I haven't bought Rhino yet, so I can't compare this to the manual that comes with the program.

Comprehensive info for artists, illustrators & crafters.......1998-04-20
Inspirational. Covers a wide range of subjects in detail not found easily else where. For example, as well as discussing techniques, tools and materials used in each area, details are also given for suppliers of many of the materials mentioned. Most chapters have colour photo step-by-step demonstations of the basic techniques under discussion and each chapter is also accompanied by fabulous photos of various illustrators work in the subject area. There is also an extremely helpful chapter on photographing your "illustration/artwork".
I particularly enjoyed the chapters on paper and fabric, and in regard to the fabric info, would recommend this book to cloth doll makers. There are many useful hints, wonderful photos AND a demo of Lisa Lichtenfels "creation" process of her Bette Midler piece. Ellen Rixford also discusses and demo's her techniques, which are equally exciting.
Although my interests lie with fabrics, I thoroughly enjoyed this book as a whole, and would now have a go at a number of the other techniques detailed. With the fantastic colour photos through out the book, I still re-read this book regularly, if not for inspiration, just for pure enjoyment!!
A great buy! One of those book you will always keep!

Book Description
When photographer Kim Levin created the magic duet of words and images that appeared in Why We Love Dogs and Why We Really Love Dogs, thousands of animal lovers responded. Now Levin's long-anticipated version for cat lovers is finally here!Kim's gift for capturing the essence of animals is reflected in beautiful photos and playful words that show the ways we love cats: because they stop to smell the flowers, because they look like lions, because they clean themselves . . . all the time. Why We Love Cats portrays all that is enchanting, mysterious, and fun in the world of cats
Customer Reviews:
Personality Plus.......2003-12-24
Not sure I agree with the previous review. This book is definitely a great companion piece to Kim's dog work. Like she does with dogs, Kim Levin has definitely been able to capture a cat's personality on film (not an easy feat!). And the black & white photography really gives the book a timeless feel to it. I give these out as gifts all the time, and have had nothing but compliments.
She'll even sign one for you if you buy it from her website.
Why We Love Cats.......2002-03-31
Indifferent text and lackluster black-and-white photos make for an overall boring book. Very disappointing.

Enjoyable and colorful history from an expert.......2007-02-18
The author, a senior curator with the National Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, and an expert on this period, expresses the desire that the characters in her book may come alive, and that certainly happens here.
The "Nordic Union" was the Kalmar Union of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, and Margrete I who pulled it all together was daughter of Valdemar IV who during his reign (often considered brutal) had pulled the warring fiefs of the country together into the nation of Denmark. So this was truly a formative period for what has survived as today's Denmark.
Rather than a dry narration of facts from documents--although the record is well substantiated--Etting has capably added colorful details where the historical record fails. She is well situated from experience to make justifiable surmises.
One of the most colorful passages relates to the wedding of Margrete's young grand-nephw and co-ruler, Erik VII (of Pomerania) and Philippa Plantagenet, daughter of England's Henry IV. He was 24 and she just 12, and the bad weather that delayed their union and the mere list of her wedding finery become a lively narration in Etting's hands.
This is a translation to English from the Danish original, but no credit is given to a translator. If it is Etting's work (and there is reference to translation details before publication), then it is extremely well done. As a translator from Danish to English, at no point did I feel I was reading a translation.

From cartoons to academic essays to tabloid journalism, Madonna has been interpreted in almost every way possible. Here is an original collection of these writings that is almost as diverse as the Material Girl herself which attempts to uncover as many interpretations of Madonna's appeal as is possible. Photographs and cartoons.
Customer Reviews:
Pop culture criticism at its best!.......2006-07-20
Whether you're a devotee or detractor of the lady in question, "Desperately Seeking Madonna" never fails to entertain (and even educate). Sexton features an impressive array of contributors (where else can you find essays by both Camille Paglia and Henry Rollins?) and himself uses Madonna as a springboard for such thought-provoking questions as "does our culture need to pigeonhole women in order to understand them?" An intelligent, fun and fascinating read.
This book is great.......2006-05-23
Where else can you read about the relationship between Madonna and man's desire to bowl?
The literary hodgepodge of Madonna.......2001-01-27
This book contains 51 different articles, thesis', poems and rants about Madonna, by authors varied as Camille Paglia and Vincent Canby to Henry Rollins and Liz Smith. It includes various one page cartoons and strips from "Mad" magazine and the Village Voice, and also in the mix are Rolling Stone poll results, a David Letterman top ten list about "Truth or Dare", and Sandra Bernhard writing about her Madonna dreams from her book "Confessions of a Pretty Lady". This book is chock full of more useless information about Madonna that us fans crave, new and old...The information covers roughly the 1984-1991 era (her most active IMHO) and is very entertaining, though not for the average reader. Madonna fans will find this book a great resource and companion to "The Madonna Companion", also a collection of written works about Madonna, though it is more on the scholarly edge. So this book is recommended to Madonna collectors, and all others...Borrow it from your own "Madonna freak".
Book Description
Building history from the rich local folklore of family-an anti-memoir by a leading historian.
Sara Walsh was born in a land of storytellers in 1919, in Ahanagran, in the west of Ireland. She has made her life out of the stories she told her children, from her early years in Ireland to her migration to the United States and her struggle to become an American. Sara's memories, as recaptured in this unusual book by her son, are neither history nor memoir but something larger and brighter than both. Remembering Ahanagran is much more than a fascinating tale of one woman and her family; it is a passionate story that expresses the dignity and excitement of ordinary lives.
4 Black-and-White Photographs/2 Maps
Richard White, professor of history at Stanford University, is the author of The Middle Ground, It's Your Misfortune and None of My Own, and The Organic Machine (H&W, 1995). He lives in Palo Alto, California.
Customer Reviews:
Workmanlike look at Irish immigration in the 1930s.......2006-01-08
This is the same book published in hardcover with a different cover and the subtitle "storytelling in a family's past."
I did not find White's actual content all that engrossing. His historian's determination to separate fact from his mother's "storytelling" embellishments or lacunae follow the usual patterns of such explorations into the clash of contrasts. The Irish mom-meets-Jewish American dad that gave birth to White appealed to me, but reading the pages of life in Chicago in the 30s vs. his father's military stint made this book little different than a self-penned history of one's family by the designated genealogist in the clan. White does write considerably better than such amateurs, but what he writes about does not rise above the mundane or the all-too-familiar tales of peasant agitation, the old IRA, and the leaving of the village for the big city.
His eye occasionally gleans the telling detail, regardless. A petition for citizenship reveals that the husband does not know his wife's birthday, and his guess is off three years. His mother is asked as a 16-year-old at entrance to the country if she was a polygamist. The legend of St Rita, patron of the Chicago parish his family lived in tells in its own moral that God shapes you up only then to kill you off. Jack Benny and Father Coughlan were the radio shows one never missed on Sunday.
One detail shows an error on White's part: on pg. 23 he claims that his relatives had their baptismal names "Gaelicized" by the priest as Helen-Hellena and William-Guilielmo, but surely this is the customary Latinization found on many Catholic documents rather than a return to the Irish which would make Eileen and Liam?
This book reminds me of a few others that have recently delved into the Irish-meets-American immigrant encounter. Thomas Lynch's "Booking Passage," also looking at North Kerry, would complement White's book. His style in its spareness yet its eloquence reminds me of Henry Glassie, the folklorist who compiled "Irish Folktales" and chronicled a Fermanagh community in "Passing the Time at Ballymenone." Finally, books like David Monagan's "Jaywalking with the Irish" and Steve Fallon's "Home with Alice" similarly compare Irish American memories with extended Irish residences.
A son rediscovers his mother & father & all the family.......2002-02-07
this was recently read on our WPRadio Chapter - A story that a son rediscovers the journey of his mother, a most naive Irish girl who lands in Chicago, about all those she lives with and then later of his father - who she only met 2 times before he proposed and she accepted - he tells it so tenderly. the father's family is Jewish and hers, Irish Catholic- and in that era, a forbidden match. but his mother Sarah finds her way in life overcoming many losses of relations with their disapproval- on both sides - he discovers who they were and writes it with a way of seeing then and now and all the weaving of the many characters that we all find in our family history. I loved it and want to buy a copy to keep and reread.
