Most of the illustrations are detailed, clear and pleasant-looking; some are modernistic line art depictions that leave you wondering what animal it is. Also, instead of three or four of same picture in different sizes it would have been better to have that many more different animals. Most graphic applications today have the capability of sizing clip art, whether through scanning and computer manipulation or even on copy machines - therefore one of each animal would have been sufficient in my opinion.

This book truly has a "sleeper" effect. It comes off as unassuming and just generally pleasant, and when I finished reading it I sort of shrugged and thought, "Well, what a nice little book."

Ha! The truth is, this book is quietly but steadily reshaping my life. I guard against being strident towards others and generally despise "confrontation," but All for Animals has helped me learn that in the past I've been completely silent where this wasn't necessary. This book has suggested to me a peaceable yet strong way to express myself to others in the context of hurt toward animals. I suspect this is because it has given me a whole new way to talk to myself on the subject.

For instance: this week at work I found myself getting up and walking around my cubicle and engaging myself in a conversation with a fellow who was talking about killing chickens for research and tossing off casual remarks like "Well, if you have to kill an animal, why not a chicken?"

We had a spirited yet amicable discussion. In the end, the fact that I've been a mostly a vegetarian since I was a teenager wasn't sufficient ammunition against the fact I was wearing leather shoes. But because the discussion was kept at a friendly level, what I took away from it wasn't animosity against this other person, but self-examination about those leather shoes. Had I not read this "nice little book," I know I would have overheard my coworker and thought, momentarily, "Gosh, that's not right," but brushed it off and not got up and talked with him. And was I beating myself over the head about wearing leather? No, not at all: I was just calmly (but steadily) wondering about it.

Karen Lee Stevens has something special to offer in a world that stampedes to become polarized and politicized around animals as an "issue." The deep beauty of this book is its ability to reach out to the human species with warmth and subtle depth and say: I understand that you can't do everything all at once, just try this one little thing and see if you like it. I am eager to see Ms. Stevens continue and expand upon the gifts she has to offer, and I challenge savvy booksellers to place this title not just among the animal-related offerings but in the (human)self-improvement category as well.

I am delighted to have Karen's book in my possession and would recommend this book to anyone who loves animals, owners or not. Karen writes that the purpose of this book is to allow "you to explore [the] many ways in which you can show even more love and appreciation for your companion animals and gives you the opportunity for learning how to peacefully coexist with all the animals who share our earth." You don't have to be an animal owner or an activist to play a crucial role in their well-being. In fact, most change for the better will take place through the everyday choices ordinary individuals like you and I make. Things like, picking up fallen fruit to discourage wild animals from coming onto your property, or feeding feral cats, adopting older pets, or not placing "free to a good home" ads. This book is written by someone who truly loves animals and cares about their well-being. Rather than make us feel guilty, this book equips us with a myriad of options. You don't have to be a vegan or have a houseful of rescued animals to be playing an important role in their lives. Start where you are and do what you can - at the end of the day everyone's actions, small and large, are what counts. That's the message I take from this book. Every Herbal Gardener Should Have A Copy.......2001-03-02

I was absolutely delighted to find this book. I had wanted to enlarge an existing herb garden, but wasn't sure I had the energy to take on more work. So, I've been looking for ideas for plants to do in containers on the porch and deck. This book is terrific and gives the exact information that I need. The photographs are great and the instructions are easy.

The directions for making 30 different herbal pots are given. Each pot is planted with specific herbs meant to treat various

ailments. The pot for Sore Throats, Coughs and Colds is planted with a variety of herbs including purple sage, lemon thyme and hyssop. The particular pot size is given with the cultivation information for each of the different containers.

Here's a general listing of what conditions are covered. Tonic Herbs, Respiratory Ailments, Digestive Problems, Nervous Disorders, First Aid, Skin Problems, Aches & Pains and the characteristic Problems of Women and Babies. The individual

conditions within each of these categories has its own specific herbal pot. For instance, cholesterol control would be under Tonic Herbs. One section of the book gives the recipes for making teas, tinctures, ointments, syrups and infused oils.

All of this useful information is packaged in a handy concise reference that is easy to use and small enough to carry with you to the nursery. Every herbal gardener should have a copy of this book.

I have quite a few herbal gardening books now but this little one really stands out. Size is not everything, that's for sure :-) This book is great for the beginner or those with limited space to garden, both, or neither - meaning anyone could use this book and have concise and detailed information at thier fingertips to create their own healing herbal pot(s) from scratch. Everything you will need is listed, from the pot to the herbs, thier properties and uses, care, and what to do with the herbs once they have grown (tea blends, etc). The pots described for various ailments and problems (babies, women's health, headaches, colds and flu, digestion problems, to name a few) are such that you could create one and stick it on your doorstep or windowsill and make your own herbal teas or tinctures. The authors also give brief but good instructions for making herbal teas, tinctures, oils, and other ways to use the herbs they outline in the book, as well as how to store the herbs for later use. I wish I would have found it earlier when I still lived in an apartment with limited space but wanted to start an herb garden. Great book...I highly recommend it to any aspiring herbalist, if I can do it, I know you can!

I loved the book Harpo Speaks so very much -- I've bought it for birthday presents for 2 different people so far. It's one of my top 10 favorite books. The first 80 - 100 pages are a little slow but after that? It takes off at a gallop and reads like fantastic fiction -- drama and comedy and heart -- and all of it actually happened! Well, out of love for this book, I wanted anything else by Harpo Marx and Rowland Barber and bought this book without much thought. Or research. And found, much to my chagrin, just like a previous reviewer noted, it's just THE FIRST FEW CHAPTERS OF HARPO SPEAKS!!! NOTHING NEW!!! I reiterate: BUY HARPO SPEAKS INSTEAD!!!

Sweetness and understanding of a great family.......2003-12-28

This may be an excerpt from a larger work, with which I'm unfamiliar. I have to judge it simply on what's before me. As one who thinks New York is the most civilized city on the planet though not as beautiful as Sydney, Australia, and who grew up, with millions of others, loving Harpo Marx, I loved this (little book). It is quite atmospheric and gives a very clear understanding of where the Marx Brothers got their drive and energy - Mother Minnie (stagestruck) and Father Frenchie (Housekeeper, tailor and cook). It is also a resounding example of the power of family. A very sweet and companiable edition by The Little Bookroom. Would make a very sweet gift as well.
