The Twelfth International Diatom Symposium stressed how diatoms can be used to assess the human impact on natural waters, without neglecting other important fields of research.
As the frustules of many diatom species are relatively resistant to dissolution they are preserved in freshwater and marine sediments and provide a record of past environments on earth. In past decades they have been successfully used to reconstruct changes in water bodies evoked by changes in salinity, acidification and eutrophication. In the last few years diatom-inferred predictions of environmental variables have become much more quantitative.
In the most recent research reports the strong separation between palaeolimnological and neolimnological diatom research is fading, as palaeolimnologists are increasingly using modern calibration sets to infer past states of the environment. This quantitative approach is also very suitable for prediction of future changes in the biota of surface waters. Also ecological changes due to climatic modification have been investigated more thoroughly recently. A very important new research topic is the occurrence of toxic diatoms, particularly along the coasts of North America. These proceedings are intended to be a balanced view of such modern developments in diatom research. They should also be of interest to non-specialists in diatoms, who can use the results of diatom research as a tool in a more general taxonomic, ecological and geological context.

First off, this book is written for an British audience so it's not quite right for a U.S. audience.. I found the book a little too verbose and not something i carried around with me. It is full of information about Crete but not really for use 'on the go' during my 3 day stay.

Indispensible for the island.......2006-07-14

We used this guide at the exclusion of several other guides on Greece/Crete. We found it indispensible. Not only for the cities, beaches, towns, foods, and general area, but for a piece by piece exhibit guide for the Museum (they don't give you any informational handouts at the Museum in Iraklion), but for the MANY ruins, monasteries and historical sites throughout Crete. This was the single best guide we had for Crete. Highly recommended.

I was expecting more from this book. It gives you a lot of little ways you can help, but nothing in the broad spectrum. I would recommend this book for 10 to 16 year olds, but not adults.

A Good Place To Start.......2005-08-16

I purchased this book as a gift for my mother who wants to "dedicate her life to animals." This book is a good place to start if you really are interested in helping animals, particularly dogs and cats that end up at animal shelters. It provides alot of practical ideas that require only a small amount of effort on your part but will yield many benefits for these animals. Some of the ideas presented seemed rather obvious (such as spaying and neutering your own pet) but the author also provides other interesting ideas that people may not think of themselves.

excellent book that reviews Dean's life in Steubenville and Cleveland in his earlyu days, as well as his first, second and third marriages. BUT the guy loved his wives,kids and fans

Author Apparently Wants to Be Roger Ebert.......2004-07-16

I read this book thinking I'd pick up some interesting insights on Dean Martin, his partnership with Jerry Lewis, and his friendships with people such as Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. While "Martini Man" does present some interesting information about the aforementioned subjects, too much of the book, as other reviewers have noted, contains endless movie reviews of Dean's movies. I mean, do we really need every plot turn of every movie Dean ever made? I think the reader would have preferred to read about Dean's relationships, and, while some of that is there, the bulk of the book seems devoted to detailed story descriptions of Dean's movies.
There is very little discussion about Dean's recordings, and his career as a singer. Dean, when he wanted to, could really sing, and it's a shame Schoell did not spend more time discussing Martin's music.

Vancouver wash does not Know talent!!!.......2004-06-17

While the book is a bit of a dissapointment, and does not really discuss the things one would want to truly know about Dino,I am more amazed that one of the people that wrote a review for this book called Dean an "Overrated talent" and that TWO BIT HACK Jerry Lewis a genius. Other than the partnership with the truly GIFTED Dean Martin what has that arrogant no talent ever done that would be considered worthwhile, and please dont mention the Nutty Professor because he even admitted that the suave version of the professor was him doing a POOR Dino imatation,and the best thing about his telethon is when he is not on screen.If I were you I would also get my facts straight on the music of Dean because the song list is endless Volare ,aint that a kick in the head,oh marie,return to me,welcome to my world ,the things we did last summer,kiss,your nobody till somebody loves you,memories are made of this,imagination,Please dont talk about me when im gone,All of these in addition to the ones you mentioned and I could go on and on.The same goes for his movies academy award nominations for The young Lions,and Rio Bravo and criticaly acclaimed movies such as Kiss me stupid(something YOU probably hear often....then again NOT)and Some Came Running,and of course Ocean's 11.The man was also a civil Rights activist,and received an award for donating huge somes of money to charitable organizations.All this just to say Martini Man was not a great book but still more interesting than anything written about Jerry Lewis and the guy from Vancouver Wouldn't know talent if it jumped up and bit him on the ass.

A straightforwardly presented life story.......2004-03-07

Superbly written by William Schoell (the co-author of "The Rat Pack"), Martini Man: The Life Of Dean Martin is an informed and informative biography of the famous celebrity and entertainment legend Dean Martin (1917-1995). One result of this authoritative biography is to dispel the public image of Dean Martin as a ladies' man and hard drinker who casually used and tossed aside comrades, colleagues, associates, and ladyfriends alike. Martini Man also defends Dean Martin's memory against allegations that he was a "Mafia singer" claiming that Martin's contact with gangsters was inevitable and unavoidable as they owned the best clubs and most popular casinos of the day. Martini Man is an upbeat, detailed, thoroughly researched, and straightforwardly presented life story that is a "must read" for the dedicated legions of Dean Martin's fans.

A good look.......2001-08-06

This book is a nice, basic look at Dean Martin's life. I am a Frank Sinatra fan and of course became interested in Dean as well. I watched several biographies of Dean Martin and so I had a good overview of his life. This book helped with some details, mostly his movies. The author talks a lot about Dean's movies and I found this helpful, but had I already known all of Dean's film roles I probably would have found it tiresome after a while. However, I'm glad I read the book. It was helpful on dates and smaller details that are glossed over in television biographies. I recommend this book for new Dean Martin fans. If you are a diehard Dino fan, this stuff won't be news to you. Its an easy read.

An entertaining and inspiring book.......1999-02-08

This book is about an immigrant group and its assimiliation into California life and society. The many stories told in the book affirm that optimism and hard-work go a long way in a wide-open and prosperous place like California. Most of the people whose stories are told in this book started out with little or nothing, and yet achieved greatness through their own perseverance and boundless energy. The book possesses a rare combination of attributes in that it is both entertaining and inspiring.

An engaging and enjoyable account of the Irish in California.......1998-12-18

Irish Californians: Historic, Benevolent, Romantic

California in the mid-nineteenth century was awash with opportunity. The readily available land and the gold rush were big draws to an immigrant Irish population, often fresh from the coffin ships of the dark famine years. The Eastern seaboard had served them well but did not present many with the opportunity for fame and fortune. So they came west in their hordes. The growth and development of California is inextricably linked to the story of the Irish settlers of those times. The state was in its infancy and the Irish were ideally suited to the frontier environment by dint of their vision and capacity for sheer hard work.

Patrick Dowling's latest offering provides a vivid and exhilarating record of the history of the Irish in California. It is littered with skillfully handled twists and hilarious anecdotes. This is enjoyable in the extreme and an absolute requirement for any Irish Californian or anybody for that matter who has the slightest interest in the history of the Irish in America. Patrick Dowling wrote this book, in his own words, "to awaken Irish Americans to their forgotten heritage, both in Ireland and California, and to help inspire a renaissance of Irish history, culture and achievements." He will certainly accomplish this dream.
