Book Description

Though most often associated with the Renaissance and with the famed Uffizi and Galleria dell'Accademia, the artistic heritage of Tuscany is actually quite diverse-with Baroque and Mannerist influences as well as Renaissance-and the artistic wonders go far beyond these two renowned institutions. Hidden Tuscany explores the varied influences and unique history of the region, revealing Tuscany's hidden gems. With glorious color photography and engaging text, Hidden Tuscany brings readers to the lesser-known sites-to the gardens, villas, museums, and churches often passed by on traditional tours or in other books on the area.

5 out of 5 stars Great Treasures We Don't Know in Tuscany.......2004-01-28

HIDDEN TUSCANY: UNUSUAL DESTINATIONS AND SECRET PLACES is a title that explains this beautiful book well. Even to the traveler who frequents Tuscany often there are little known but extraordinary treasures that author Cesare Cunaccia and photographer Massimo Listri unveil in a most conversational and sensitively visual display. Yes, it takes many visits to Florence, Sienna, Lucca, etc to see absolutely everything found in the art history books, most of which is in the confines of the Uffizi in Florence and even more of which is reflecting the rich Renaissance era of art. The lines just to see Michelangelo's David, for example, attest to their well-won popularity. But this book points out that there are great examples of the Romanesque architecture, of buildings and gardens that date back to the 1300s, that one of the best-kept secrets of Florence is its Silk Factory. For those art lovers who seek examples of the Mannerist Pontormo look no further than the lavishly illustrated section on his decor for the Santa Felicita. The magic found in the geometric designs that adorn San Miniato defies credibility. Listi is not a documentary photographer and that is a compliment: his photographs are bathed in light and shadow and are reproduced in this splendid volume with great respect for color value. For those not already addicted to the romance of Tuscany this volume will certainly weight the case for its preeminence in the traveler's world.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely delightful........2002-08-12

This large but not-too-thick book details a number of beautiful and little-known places in Tuscany, ranging over the entire region. This isn't actually a travel book per se -- it doesn't tell you contact information, for example, or even if these places are open to the general public. It does, however, tell you about places in Tuscany that tourists probably never ever get to, to wit: The Refuge of the White Monks at Monte Oliveto Maggiore, built in 1313, with its vaulted white halls filled with frescoes of cats and mounted archers; the lush, almost surreally beautiful gardens of Villa Garzoni in Lucca; the thousands of treasures of all sorts in the Museum of Silver in Palazzo Pitti; the Florentine Botanical Museum; the inlaid treasures of the Museo delle Pietre Dure, including shots of inlay artists at their craft; a silk factory; and many other things, probably 30 to 40 in all. The pictures are lavish and beautifully made, and the text is lyrical and pleasant on the eyes. I'd never even heard of ANY of these places, so reading this book was quite a delicious experience.

I wouldn't get this as a serious travel guide, but it piques the imagination. There may be things here you'll want to find on your next trip to Tuscany.

Our daughter has really enjoyed this series. She loves looking at the babies' different facial expressions. Teddy bears are one of her favorite things right now and she loves this installment.

3 out of 5 stars Waste of 5.99.......2002-12-06

My 14 mo. old is so NOT interested in this book. I think this book is appropriate for the under 10 month crowd. She is just too advanced for it and the photography is not so special--I almost ordered the whole series based on the 4 and 5 start reviews, and I'm glad I saved the money. I prefer Penny Gentien (sp?) baby photo books.

      5 out of 5 stars Huggable & Lovable.......2000-04-06

Once again, hats off to Margaret Miller for another beautiful book. This book captures young toddlers with their favorite teddy bears. Ms. Miller does a fantastic job with using bright colors and bold pictures within her books. Both of these seem to help catch my 9 month old daughters eyes. She just loves to turn the pages and talk to the babies. Within this book, it shows kids playing peekaboo, hugging, sharing secrets and falling a sleep with their teddy bears. It is a must have for your young childs book collection. We would also like to recommend "I Love Colors", and "What's on my Head?" both by Ms. Miller. We hope that you and your child enjoy this book as much as we do.

I thought that I would be getting a book targeted to the specific problems that shelter dogs experience. Perhaps training advice on how to deal with issues that these special dogs may exhibit. Boy - was I wrong! Having recently saved a 4 month old puppy from a shelter I was really looking forward to learning how to make my puppy's adjustment smooth. I learned nothing from this book. Some ridiculous chapters include "Sex - Who Needs It" and "Will It Bite?" both addressing issues that really don't need an entire chapter. Of course your dog should be neutered and of course you should do your best to choose a happy playmate - not an agressive fiend. I am not a new dog owner but these chapters would make me never want a dog. I have had a much better experience with other books written on the subject. I would not recommend this for anyone looking for insight and training tips for shelter dogs who may have been abused, abandoned, be extremely submissive or agressive.

I recently borrowed this book from my library, and I must ownit! It offers honest, practical advice covering all aspects ofadopting these very special animals. I have wanted to get a dog butwas apprehensive about looking at shelter dogs until I read this book. It has inspired confidence in my ability to train and provide the proper atmosphere that my new pet will need!

Everything one needs to know about making a first class pet out of a shelter dog.

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book for someone adopting a shelter dog.......1999-04-19

I bought this book and found it very helpful in dealing with specific issues raised by adopting older dogs as well as puppies. It was very realistic and offered down to earth solutions that work. I have several dozen dog training books and I found this one to be the most helpful in dealing with specific issues like housetraining and aggression problems. I lent my copy of the book to a friend and I'm need to order more copies for other friends looking for this type of book.

                Book Description

The 'On Affections' by the Stoic philosopher Chrysippus (c. 280-205 BCE) contains the classic exposition of the Stoic theory of the emotions. This book provides a fresh discussion of the extant evidence, i.e. the fragments and testimonies preserved by later sources. It aims to establish the exact amount of available evidence and to arrange the fragmentary material so as to see how far the original treatise can be reconstructed. The fragments are interpreted both in their literary context and in the light of Stoic doctrines known from other sources. Given its contextual approach, this study includes extensive discussion of the methods of sources such as Galen, Posidonius and Cicero. In addition, the medical backdrop to Chrysippus' theory receives considerable attention.

                  Book Description

This volume deals with books II and III of the On the Doctrines of Hippocrates and Plato by the medical scientist and philosopher Galen of Pergamum (129-c. 210 CE ). In these books Galen offers an extensive critique of Stoic psychology, quoting a large number of passages from the otherwise lost treatise On the Soul by the great Stoic philosopher Chrysippus. This first full-scale study of Chrysippus' mode of argumentation considers the fragments both in their Galenic context and in relation to Stoicism in general. A separate discussion is devoted to Galen's aims and methods and the traditions he is indebted to. Though designed as a foil for the treatment of Chrysippus, it can also be read by those interested in Galen's methodology for its own sake.

                    Book Description

"This book is a thank-you letter. A long overdue reply to all of the people who, during one of the most difficult and painful periods my family has had to endure, took time and wrote to us; faxed us; phoned or visited us; prayed for us; joined hands for us; sent us flowers, gifts, white light, religious tokens and talismans, books, tapes, drawings, funny stories and jokes that made us laugh, tales of overcoming hardship that inspired us and gave us hope. . . ."

When Christopher Reeve was paralyzed in a riding accident on May 27, 1995, letters poured in from around the world, some addressed only to "Superman, USA." It was an astonishing demonstration of sympathy and support for a man who had become an American icon. In Care Packages, Dana Reeve, Christopher's wife, has collected some of the most unforgettable letters and gifts that her family received. There are thoughts and prayers from Hollywood's greatest stars, like Katharine Hepburn ("Golly. What a mess. Call me.") and Robert De Niro, politicians and presidents, and, of course, the everyday heroes who have prevailed in the face of nearly overwhelming adversity to lead rich and fulfilling lives. These letters are inspiring, funny, surprising, and always deeply touching. Some writers offer advice (listen to jazz, try LSD psychotherapy, get a cat), while others simply tell their own stories in a beautiful gesture of hope and community. And sometimes the youngest fans say it best ("I'm sorry that you fell off your horse. Let's hope it won't happen again"; "i broke my neck....im ok now. i hope you will be too"). But Care Packages is not only about the "strangers and other friends" who have had such a profound effect on the Reeves. With an introduction to each chapter by Dana Reeve, it is also the story of a marriage and a family facing the ultimate test--from the fear of the emergency room to the long, hard days of rehab to the bittersweet moments of a wedding anniversary--and reaffirming their commitment in a thousand new ways.

5 out of 5 stars Of warm hearts and caring thoughts............2006-04-08

I read this book in 2000 and I was both inspired and touched by it.
I began writing to the Reeves shortly after Chris had his
riding accident, and I never stopped.
Chris and Dana were two of the most caring and enduring people
in the world. Now that they are both gone, this book serves as a tribute of sort to both of them. They have left a legacy of love,
kindness, and family values for everyone to remember and reflect upon.
For anyone who needs any amount of inspiration and uplifting of
spirit, simply get a copy of this book.
May God forever keep Christopher and Dana Reeve in His sweet embrace.

4 out of 5 stars "See there are a few nice people left in the world !".......2002-11-25

I think most people today have become bitter and cold. Not bothering to take the time to even say 'good morning,' in most cases. You are lucky to get someone (today) to even nod their head with a good morning gesture. It is nice to discover that there are a few people still left in the world today who are polite enough to send someone like 'Superman,' a warm and heartfelt good luck wish!

                    4 out of 5 stars Heart-warming and a great tribute to a fine person.......2000-06-17

I think this is a charming and insightful collection, and I feel not the least bit silly spending money on it. Christopher Reeve is one of my heroes, and I wrote e-mail to him via a website not long after his accident. I'm gratified and warmed to see how many other people did something similar.

Chris, you're much loved - and Dana, thank you for sharing these letters with us. We haven't forgotten either of you, and we're still praying for that moment that all the fighting and struggling pays off.

5 out of 5 stars Dana calls these letters gifts, they are a gift to us all!.......2000-03-11

Thanks to Dana Reeve, we get a gift every time we read this book! Buy it as a present to yourself! I loved this book! * Sniff * Many beautiful things can come out of something terrible. The out pouring of love for Christopher Reeve is amazing! His acting in "Somewhere in Time" was my favorite and I am a fan, but his courage through his ordeal is altogether awe inspiring. Thank-YOU, Dana! Buy this book today!

5 out of 5 stars Chris Reeve is an inspiration to young and old........2000-01-05

I first met Chris in Atlanta in 1994 and was struck by his grace and incredible presence. I saw him again at a private party following his star ceremony on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 15, 1997. The Reeve family are a fine example of the true meaning of "family". Meeting them and being involved with fund-raising and Superman events has changed my life. I exchanged this wonderful, touching book with my little Superman buddy, Joey, on Thanksgiving day. This 8-year-old boy is the biggest Superman fan I know. We took a photo together in our Superman shirts with our books and many of Joey's Superman collectibles. I mailed the photo, along with Joey's special letter and gift for Chris, to the Reeves' home on New Year's Day. Joey, his mom and I love the "Kids" chapter of this book with all of the lovely drawings and messages from children all over the world. I've never loved a book more than this one. Thanks Dana! I believe that Chris will be best known as the Super Man who helped all disabled people fulfill their dreams. Jim Bowers - Flying78@bellsouth.net.
