A good guidebook.......2006-01-02
A comprehensive, informative guide to one of the world's great cities.
inaccurate-.......2003-09-15
I found this book to be full of errors- I went to two recommended eataries- both were out of business. Also book reported changing of the guard occurs every day in August- guess what? It does not! Does not seem that very careful fact checking went into this book.
Great Reference for Places to Visit.......2002-11-05
We're currently living in London for four months with a four year old, and we use this book just about everyday. As some of the other reviewers mentioned, it's not great for restaurants or hotels, but is well worth buying just for the comprehensive list of places to visit that kids would enjoy. We found this book much more helpful than others that we purchased. Most other books have too much information and list too many places to visit. This one just listed the major sights to see, but includes some of the lesser known places. We love it, but we're also more interested in taking our child to the National Gallery to see Michaelangelo and to the Natural History Museum to see the dinosaurs, then we are in taking our child to Legoland. (And yes four year old children can appreciate Michaelangelo if you explain it to them!)
Don't Waste your Money.......2002-07-23
I read the reviews on this book and thought that it was perfect. I figured the complaints raised would be addressed in the new edition. So I went to my local bookstore to check it out. The book seems popular because it was hard to find a copy; however, when I did I find a copy I was very disappointed. This is a brand new edition but they reference sites and restaurants that are no longer in existence. For example, try to find the Chicago rib shack. According to the web this place no longer exists and is now a Japanese restaurant. If you need further proof, go to the index and look up Syon Park. The book says pg. 183-4 yet nothing is there. I did find the Syon Park info on pg. 181 but then what's the point of the index??? At this point I threw the book down in disgust and walked out. I'm still trying to figure out what they put into the 2nd Ed????
I subsequently picked up "Fodor's Around London with Kids" which has been useful in planning my trip.
Don't Believe Restaurant Reviews.......2002-07-21
Some good information, and a good source for telephone numbers and things to do that you might not see suggested in other books. You do get the feeling that the author actually lives in London, and he has a good feel for what kids might enjoy and what they will probably find boring, (but that their parents think they should take them to). The second edition was better organized and more accurate than the first.
The restaurant suggestions, however, as another reviewer mentioned, are not accurate. "Kid Friendly" they are not. We went to a restaurant, described in the book as having a menu of "fish fingers, burgers, etc.". We arrived to find not a fish finger in sight. I showed the book to restaurant manager who laughed, and said these, guys never come here, they call up and say "Do you feed kids?" - If we say yes they put down kid friendly. ... London is expensive, and this book won't save you any money.
All that aside, I guess I would recommend this book as a source of things to do, but take the restaurant and hotel reviews with a grain of salt.

Book Description
Renaissance art and the descriptive science of human anatomy were born at exactly the same
moment in Italy around 1500. Anatomists needed artists to illustrate their books, and artists
needed anatomists to help them understand the body's structure, movement, and function. The
illustrations which they devised together mark the longest unbroken collaboration between
scientists and artists in western culture. These "maps of the body" established the basis for the
figurative tradition in painting and sculpture which lasts to this day. The exhibition catalogue
reproduces anatomical drawings, prints, and illustrated books, and includes examples by
major artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Durer, and Rubens but also
the eloquent illustrations by lesser known artists. The text, written for the interested layman as
well as the specialist, explores popular anatomical broadsheets, the teaching of anatomy to
young artists, female anatomy as revealing the origins of life, the anatomical dissection theatres, and "anatomy satirized."

The Ingenious Machine of Nature Four Centuries of Art and.......2001-05-17
The National Gallery of Canada has outdone itself in every way. Kudos to Cazort, Kornell, and Roberts for putting together an astounding book about anatomy in art, a book that is easily comprehensible and not overly bearing. The Drawings and prints reproduced in the book are amazing themselves. The book traces the development of anatomy through the ages. Tough to find a comparable book.

An Incredible Experience.......2000-10-20
I ran into this book in my library. Since I love to read of books about individuals sharing their lives with wildlife, I eagerly checked Last of the Free out. I was not disappointed! Gareth truly came across as a very caring human being! His views on the "system" and his frustration at trying to accept the way people are is interesting. He seems to be taking over for the lions for George Adamson when he died by poachers/bandits!
What a difficult life he has chosen for himself but a very rewarding one. I love reading about the antics and learning experiences of animals and this time it was with lions! I am so envious of Gareth and so glad that he's doing all that he is. I have found his homepage and plan on keeping abreast of what he's doing. The poor lions and elephants need a voice and they have one! Thank God!

Miller's Pocket Dictionary of Antiques an authoritative A-Z.......2003-08-13
I wouldn't recommend this book as it was highly disappointing. I've owned other books by this author and was very satisfied, however, this book covers almost nothing that the others haven't
already covered. It was a complete waste of money....

ASIN: 1892145200

Book Description
If you know where to look, remarkable gardens welcome visitors in almost every nook and cranny of New York City. They're perched on rooftops, concealed behind sleek Midtown façades, tucked inside venerable museums, and waiting behind gates you may have passed by a hundred times. Some are even hidden in plain sight, such as the romantic Shakespeare Garden, the windy bluffs of the Heather Garden, or the bold, contemporary Gantry Plaza State Park. This lively guide to 100 gardens (open to the public and mostly free) in all five boroughs offers scores of unexpected discoveries, from not one but two authentic Chinese Scholar's gardens to a beguiling children's maze, a huge airplane topiary, and the largest community garden in America. More than just a guide to flora, Garden Guide: New York City describes the intriguing stories and colorful personalities behind these green spaces. From the city's horticultural crown jewels to its quirky community gardens, the book tells when each garden is at its best and gives practical information including directions, hours, public transportation, and amenities.

Book Description
Baseball...Apple pie...and "The Beaver." As Theodore "Beaver" Cleaver, Jerry Mathers is the icon of an era that holds a special place in all our hearts--whether we're old enough to remember it in prime time or fell in love with it in reruns. Now, in his warm and revealing autobiography, he presents his own history--as a child actor as well as in the years following his role as "The Beav." Featuring funny and warm reminscences from both his real and TV families, Mathers reveals intimate details about his childhood; living life as America's favorite kid...his struggle with dyslexia...his most embarrassing moments on the set...his relationships with cast members: Hugh Beaumont, Barbara Billingsley, Tony Dow, and Ken Osmond...those Vietnam rumors...and more.
Customer Reviews:
The Beaver.......2005-09-28
Not bad it was better than Lumpy's book.
Jerry did give us more info on the show and stories about the cast.
the book takes us through Jerry's life from a small boy to being a man. i did love the stories about all the cast members and what they are doing now. leave it to beaver was a great show!
if you are a leave it to beaver fan I think you will enjoy this book. it is not the best book I have read but not bad.
A record of an optimistic generation...and how it turned out.......2004-01-03
It would be quite irresponsible to ignore the pop culture that surrounds us from our birth to our death. And certainly ignorant to belittle it. Though many do...ignorantly. From music to movies, plays to novels, magazines to television, the time in which we live IS the time we are given to live. For baby boomers LEAVE IT TO BEAVER is as important to who they are as Elvis, Kennedy and the Space Age. It defined an optimistic decade that was secure in its moral center, struggling in its quest to seek right over wrong, and boundless in its dreams. The record of the man at the center of LEAVE IT TO BEAVER is a record of post-World War 2 America. To understand that period is to understand the pop culture, to understand life as it was back then, and to understand the standards and expectations thrust upon those that lived back then. Whereas the show LEAVE IT TO BEAVE aptly laid out those standards and expectations by example and decree, the book demonstrates that the lives of those that made the show were not exempt from those standards or expectations in their personal lives and leaves a lasting record of that period of time for us to study.
A good book for LITB fans.......2003-08-26
As a Leave it to Beaver fan, I really enjoyed this book. Jerry Mathers opens up his life and tells many behind the scenes stories about his career and the ongoings of the television show. The book is about "The Beav" and as a result, some people may (and are) put off by some of Jerry's "bragging". While this does seem to happen in the book, the information and stories that he provides more than makes up for this. A nice touch is towards the end of the book where he gives some of the television show cast members their turn to talk about how they felt about the series. Gee, Beav, are you gonna write another one?
Poor editing proves a serious flaw for this autobiography.......2003-03-26
Although Jerry Mathers' autobiography had great potential, it took a wrong turn early in the development of this book. The chronological order of events is often so out of whack that it's almost as if someone tossed the manuscript pages into the air and then reassembled them in the wrong order. The reader gets the impression that someone turned on a tape recorder, let Jerry ramble, and then transcribed the tape verbatim. The book is also crippled by run-on sentences, misspellings, and repeated use of the word "nice" in place of more stimulating adjectives. There is no attempt to make a smooth transition between one topic and another, so the story line jerks around like a runaway bumper car. Like other reviewers on this site, I, too, was put off by Jerry's expounding on the despicable morals of other people in his generation even as he talked about cohabiting with his girlfriends and described his first encounter with his second wife, whose "body was designed for sin." Furthermore, while glimpses into the production of "Leave It to Beaver" are interesting and often amusing, there is too much insignificant detail in the rest of the book. (Does the reader care that "the dinner was delicious" at Jerry's parents' 50th anniversary celebration?) The compelling sections of Jerry's story can be picked out in a quick scan of the pages. Riffle through a copy at the library, but don't bother buying this book.
Not For Real "Beaver" Fans........2002-04-18
Jerry Mathers pretty much does nothing else in this book but print "quotes" from magazine articles about how great he was.
Being a real fan of the show, I was disappointed in the lack of depth he felt for the show or it's characters. This book is a "tribute" to Jerry Mathers, written BY Jerry Mathers.
A snoozefest for any real "Leave It To Beaver" fan.
Don't even bother with it.
