Customer Reviews:
a terrific guide with a Brit sense of humor .......2007-05-24
Not only very informative, well-laid out and user friendly, this book nailed some classic South Florida schtick which, to those in the know, (myself included) will find quite humorous. But conservative tourists of a certain demographic might prefer the more conventional (translation: boring)guides.
By the way, the TIME OUT Paris guide is tops.

Customer Reviews:
Charming, riveting and important.......2007-09-06
I read these books consecutively - having bought them as a box set - and I really enjoyed them. It gives us a genuinely intimate portrait of what life was like growing up in Iran, first under the Shah's right-wing dictatorship, then during the Islamic revolution which led to a clerical state and through the war with Iraq. The two-part memoir takes us from 1980 when Marjane was 10 years old through the 1990s when she's become a woman who had endured exile at a young age and a return to her country.
Because these are illustrated novels there isn't as much depth as there would be in a traditional novel. The characters aren't fleshed out in the narrative because we have the visual element available. And the visual element is wonderful. Through the relatively simple drawings the fear, turmoil, frustration and even humor of Marjane and her friends and family are easily identified and enrich the story tremendously.
At first I had a problem with the writing style - with the direct and simple prose. However, the more I read the more I became comfortable with the style, pacing and rhythm.
I would definitely recommend that these books be read together as a valuable introduction an overview of the history and traditions of Iran, as well as for the wonderful story of a little girl growing up in an impossibly complex and frightening environment.
Disappointingly light and schematic.......2007-08-04
I was really expecting the film that came out of this book and I have finally seen it. It is one of the greatest disappointments I have lived in a movie-theater for quite a while, all the more because I was expecting a lot from it. But I should have known better. The subject is too serious to be treated so lightly, yes lightly. What are her father and mother doing in Iran for them to have that much money, that comfort if not luxury, that durability that enables them to survive all regimes, all revolutions, all coup d'etat, when it is not simple religious putsches, and where did they get the money to enable her to live for several years in Vienna? The whole film becomes a collection of clichés, most of them purely existential. Let me give a couple. Cliché, the quotation of Lenin or Bakunin or some other names that bring nothing to the mind. Cliché, her boyfriend in Vienna who discovers he is gay and the relation is finished because of it: you have to be seriously concentrating on sex and only sex to make friends with someone and drop him as soon as he discovers himself unable to fulfill the sexual part of the relation. What about his personality, his originality? What about love and friendship in all that? Then the next one is seen in two directions and each one is a cliché: on one side he is a saint who ends up in bed with another girl; on the other side he is a monster who exploited the girl all along. She sure was a sucker and a dummy. But what does it bring to the film, to the story, to the ideas the film conveys, if it conveys any articulated idea? The point is not to say that the West sold weapons to both Iran and Iraq. That's normal since we are in a market economy and business is business: if I don't sell my weapons, my neighbor will sell his. So, what must I do? After all a French exocet missile was very effective in the Falkland Islands war in the 1980s ... against the English. If Kellog refuses to sell his corn flakes to me, I will buy the corn flakes of any other brand. But what were the causes of this war? Why did Iran and Iraq manage to start a war between them two instead of finding a normal solution through discussions and negotiations? The film seems to express some kind of nostalgia for the good old days when there were two clear cut sides. Unluckily the old USSR has disappeared, but not one word about the support Iran provided, along with the CIA among others, to the anti-soviet fighters in Afghanistan. This film is simplistic but it deals with extremely important issues, so it does not have the right to be that simplistic. Politics cannot be reduced to that superficiality. And the future of Iran is not in Paris. It is Tehran.

I have read several books about women's lives in Iran. Marjane Satrapi expresses so much with a few words and her amazing drawings. I was amazed at the understanding that she conveys though her "diary". I would recommend this set of boxes to anyone interested in Muslim women and how they live.
Honesty and Brilliance.......2007-06-05
Of the 4 Satrapi Books I have read these two are by far her best. They truly should be read together. I love her blunt honesty which is a rare trait in the community, and she draws her inspiration from the best of the best in the business (Art Speigleman).
good book.......2007-05-22
good book!! it brought me back to my childhood and i realized how much i really do like comics! satrapi is a great author and i can't wait to read her other books :)

This is ridiculous. You're sitting there reading catalog copy catalog copy!! when there's an insanely cute puppy, just begging to be fawned over. Look at the puppy! Look at his wet wittle nose! And his precious wittle ears. Isn't he adorable? Don't you want to snuggle with him? Isn't he so cute you could die?
Inside this book you'll find hundreds of ridiculously cute photographs. Kittens, ducklings, baby seals, grinning dolphins, hamsters with silly hats they're all here, and they're all irresistible. Other publishers would be afraid to put so much cuteness in a single book. But we see that puppy and our hearts just melt. Look deep into his eyes. Now tell us you won't give him a home.

Book Description
Largely based on laboratory work, the volume opens with a review on hops in general, while the bulk of the book covers the chemistry of the bitter acids of hop and beer. Practical, fully detailed procedures on the preparation and/or the separation of many of the compounds discussed are included. There is a chapter included on the complicated issue of bitter acid analysis, and several on the high-efficiency liquid chromatography of hop bitter acids.
Bearing in mind the lack of literature produced recently in this field, the book is an excellent review of the present state of knowledge, and gives a large list of topics pointing to worthwhile studies for the future. The indexes provided will serve as a reference library-dictionary to hops, hop and beer bitter acids chemistry and analysis.

Book Description
Crazy Horse, the military leader of the Oglala Sioux whose personal power and social nonconformity set him off as "strange," fought in many famous battles, including the one at the Little Bighorn. He held out boldly against the government's efforts to confine the Sioux on reservations. Finally, in the spring of 1877 he surrendered, one of the last important chiefs to do so, only to meet a violent death. Mari Sandoz, the noted author of Cheyenne Autumn and Old Jules, both available as Bison Books, has captured the spirit of Crazy Horse with a strength and nobility befitting his heroism.
Customer Reviews:
great book.......2007-04-17
I had never read Mari Sandoz so I can't compare this to her other books. The writing style is unique and pleasant. It is a very interesting, and unfortunately sad story about Indian life on the great plains. The book seems very well researched and therefore more interesting to read since it is about history. The Indians suffered strategically from a lack of organization, but their whole life style was about independence and in fact a much more pure form of democracy in selecting and de-selecting their leaders. In reading the story with regard to the lies and deceipt of the white men it reminded me that world politics and war is no different today than then. Crazy Horse had attributes that leaders should aspire to, he wanted to help his people and he was not vain about himself as leader. In the end he was tricked into surrender by his own people.
I thought it was one of the best books of Indian life and history that I have read.
An Authenticated Portrait.......2006-12-13
Little is known about Crazy Horse in comparison to other legendary chiefs, warriors and heroes due to the quiet-spoken and solitude-seeking nature he possessed. Indeed, Crazy Horse was considered "strange" due to standing true to his ideals and who he really was, instead of the conventional ways of others no matter how traditional. Born of lighter hair and skin, young Curly stood out as different from the beginning of his days. Most humble and purely strong and good-hearted, Crazy Horse grew to be the truest and most brilliant leader of the Lakotas. Self-sacrificing even to the bitter end, Crazy Horse earned his place of honor as a hero to be respected.
Combining interview information of Eleanor Hinman with survivors who knew Crazy Horse, with Mari Sandoz's meticulous research, gives "Crazy Horse: The Strange Man of The Oglalas" clout in accuracy of detail and fact in the day and time of Crazy Horse. I very highly recommend this book.
Excellent book..........2006-08-09
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and couldn't recommend it more. If you are a Native American history buff, or have any interest at all in the so-called Indian wars of the Great Plains, this book is a must-read. It is written in the vernacular of a Native American who speaks English tolerably well, and I believe this adds a great deal of character to the writing. The story of Crazy Horse's life is a sad one filled with the mistrust and back-stabbing deeds of his own people, along with the well known deeds committed by the American settlers and soldiers. Crazy Horse's ultimate downfall was aided by the restraining hands of his own people, as foretold by his vision. A sad ending to his life indeed, but Sandoz's re-telling provides a fascinating work of history. One word of advice to the reader: A much better understanding of the events that occur in this book can be had by "pre-reading" a good, concise history such as Indian Wars by Utley and Washburn.
A Novel or Biography?.......2005-04-14
The strange man of the Lakotas made very little contact with the "white man" and remains a mysterious character of native American culture. Not much is known about him, his birth, his death, his burial.
Sandoz attempts to document as much history is known about this man, and she puts it in the form of a novel. It is easy to read and entertaining. Yet it includes historical facts, events and characters. While it is difficult to pen a biography about someone who so little is known about, Sandoz documents all that is known about him in this book. Many of the facts were taken from interviews with people who knew him and lived with him. Those people are all long gone. The only comprehensive memory of Crazy Horse is this book.
A Beautiful and Compelling Biography.......2004-05-21
This is a highly unique biography and is a well-deserved classic in the world of literature. Sandoz did not write the standard Native American story from the point of view of the outsider (that is, the white conquerors), but created a book that feels as if it was written by the Indians from their own world view. Sandoz had the great advantage, in the 1930s, of interviewing still-living oldtimers who really knew Crazy Horse, and her combination of first-hand Indian accounts and meticulously well-crafted prose makes for an extremely compelling story of the last years of Indian freedom. In fact, this is not so much a biography of Crazy Horse, but a much larger story of the Lakota (Sioux) people in which he is the central character. The book does not include much historical detail, as that would be the white man's method of writing, so for such information on late Sioux history you would have to look elsewhere (such as *Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee* by Dee Brown).
However, we do get a book full of beautiful and poetic prose such as "there was a star with a long white tail to speak of good things," and consistent use of Indian terminology such as "burning cup" for whiskey or "soldier chief" for army officers. This style of writing does make the reading of this book stiff and long-winded in places, but Sandoz must be commended for her very unique and moving methods. In the end, Crazy Horse himself comes across as a troubled loner among his people, a bit manic-depressive but a strong leader and warrior, and he remains as dark and mysterious to us as he was to his friends and enemies. And as usual for Native American histories from this period, the end of the story gives us the depressing loss of the people's freedom and the noble but hopeless efforts of a great leader to save his people. Concerning the special 50th anniversary edition of the book, you can ignore the rather sycophantic introduction by Stephen B. Oates, but the stunning cover painting by Ed Lindlof is almost worth the price of admission alone. [~doomsdayer520~]
Book Description
For the American Indians the 19th century was a disaster. It started promisingly enough; there seemed to be land for everyone. But the trickle of immigrants flowing westward increased to a flood, and the two cultures glowered at each other with hatred.
Crazy Horse was one of the last Indian chiefs to wage war against the settlers. He was charismatic, known for his valor and bravery, openly admired by his opponents. In 1876 he led the Sioux nation out of its reservation and into the wilderness. He held off pursuing armies for months. In the end, dressed in finest regalia, he surrendered, later to be treacherously stabbed and killed.
"A glorious tale, told with beauty and power -- the story of a great American." (The New York Times)
Customer Reviews:
a better Human Being.......2007-07-27
The world needs more people like the man whose life is explored in this book. Taken from interviews with those who knew Crazy Horse in varying degrees, he is consistently shown to be highly principled, ethical, and devoted to the welfare of his people. His example best expresses the difference between a "Leader" and a "manager" or "CEO". All are necessary, be we have lately begun to mis-order their importance, and have begun to choke on our own bitter mediocrity.
Sandoz shows the poetic mindset of the Lakota people.......1999-02-03
If you ever wanted to know what month the "moon of the popping trees," or who "the little people of the air" are all about, you only have to start this book. I have read it more times than you can count on five hands and it still moves me everytime. CRAZY HORSE probably paints the picture of exhiliration and despair of the 19th century Lakota(Sioux)and the end of their world as no other book on the subject I've read. (And I've read a lot of them.) When you've dried your tears at the end of this book, you begin to feel a kindred spirit with the Lakota and their struggle to save the world they know, and anger and contempt for the treaties and the word of the United States. Custer fans will be surprised that the so called "Battle of the Little Big Horn" appears with little fanfair in the book, it's almost over before you know it. The fact is, that's how the battle occured: just another skirmish with the soldiers, but one which the Lakota find out later is the turning point in their long struggle with the United States. A great tragedy in the classic sense of the word.
