Certain products, like the VCR and the microprocessor, are far more valuable as the center of a network of ancillary items than they ever could become on their own. Platform Leadership, by Annabelle Gawer and Michael A. Cusumano, examines how a handful of firms has maximized this position--or are attempting to do so--and proposes a framework that other businesses can use to establish similar game plans. Combining original research with analysis that draws upon their experiences as professors specializing in high-tech strategy, Gawer and Cusumano focus on Intel, Microsoft, Cisco, Palm, NTT DoCoMo, and supporters of the Linux operating system to show how to establish and expand this vital hub positioning. Their four-pronged approach concentrates on scope (what firms produce on their own and encourage others to produce), technology (how much detail about product architecture and design they should disclose to outsiders), alliances (how collaborative or competitive their relationships with those outsiders should be), and organization (what structures best balance subsequent external and internal conflicts). The examples selected illustrate varying methods for walking the fine line required to achieve "platform leadership" and will provide food for thought along with practical guidance for others interested in attaining similar status. --Howard Rothman

        Book Description

It is the fundamental challenge of the high-tech sector: A firm must innovate internally to succeed-yet its success may equally depend on corresponding innovations by external firms. Whether a company develops a ubiquitous operating system or the software that runs on it, a VCR or the movies we play on it, every participant in a high-tech network is vulnerable to the innovative moves of its partners and competitors.

Yet, in spite of this perilous situation, some firms have developed strategies that have made them industry powerhouses and world-class innovators. How? By becoming platform leaders-companies that provide the technological foundation on which other products, services, and systems are built. Platform leadership is the Holy Grail of high-tech industries, but it is difficult to achieve.

In Platform Leadership, high-tech strategy experts Annabelle Gawer and Michael A. Cusumano reveal how Intel, Microsoft, and Cisco, as well as companies including Palm and NTT DoCoMo, have orchestrated industry innovations to support their products-and, in the process, established dominant market positions. Based on these in-depth case studies and on incisive analysis, the authors present their Four Levers Framework for designing and implementing a successful platform strategy-or for improving an existing strategy:

        1. Determine the scope of the firm: Is it preferable to create product complements internally or let the "market" produce them?

        2. Design product technology strategically: What degree of modularity is appropriate? Should product interfaces be open or closed? What information should leaders disclose to outside firms?

        3. Shape relationships with external complementors: How can the company balance competition and collaboration with outside players?

        4. Optimize internal organizational structures: What processes and systems will allow the company to manage internal and external conflicts of interest most effectively?

For executives, strategists, and entrepreneurs in many high-tech arenas, this book shows how firms can orchestrate innovation to ensure their own competitive futures-and drive the evolution of their industry.

AUTHORBIO: Annabelle Gawer is Assistant Professor of Strategy and Management at INSEAD. Michael A. Cusumano is the Sloan Management Review Professor of Management at the MIT Sloan School, editor-in-chief and chairman of the board of the Sloan Management Review, and coauthor of the bestseller Microsoft Secrets.

        2 out of 5 stars Confusing.......2006-02-14

Establishing industry leadership gives companies an advantage over competitors: they can shape the industry in a way that benefits them in the long term. Platform Leadership deals with how companies can establish and maintain such a leadership.

The book starts by presenting four levers that companies can use to become leaders. The four levers are (as described in the review above):
        1. Determine the scope of the firm
        2. Design product technology strategically
        3. Shape relationships with external complementors
        4. Optimize internal organizational structures

The authors carefully analyze the rise of Intel as an industry leader and show how Intel chose to position the levers. This part of the book is worth 5 stars. The research was done in depth with many interviews of Intel managers. The analysis is insightful. I particularly liked the explanation of Intel's failure to enter some markets (video conferencing).

The authors then go on to show how other companies have achieved industry leadership. This is where the book starts to unravel. The research is skimpy, with pages after pages of copies of PR announcements. The analysis sections are short and often a repeat of the PR. There is very little of value.

Worse, it seems that every company sets the levers differently: some limit their scope (Intel) but others do not (Microsoft). Some are fully integrated (Microsoft) but others are a patchwork of small units (CISCO). In brief, it seems that the levers are irrelevant to the success as a platform leader.

Since the authors cannot detect a pattern to industry leadership they end up with a weak conclusion: becoming a platform leader requires a company to realize that it needs to influence partners. While this is true and in some ways insightful (how many companies do forget this piece of advice?), I cannot help but being disappointed by the book.

5 out of 5 stars It's good to have powerful friends! .......2005-01-06

This book is an extension of the excellent Sloan (MIT) article Ms. Gawer co-wrote a couple of years back. The book does an excellent job of articulating the concepts of modularity in design, and the management of technology ecosystems.

It is easier to gain a market if your interests are aligned around a platform that is well organized. At the same time, the large platform leaders she cites (Intel, Microsoft, Cisco) are hardly benevolent organizations....so it seems that a small degree of skepticism should accompany accepting anything that the 'platform leader' offers. This look at what leadership means is very enlightening, and made me wonder how open source solutions can succeed without a change in tactics.

4 out of 5 stars Great book - worth your time if you are ISV or in High Tech.......2002-11-20

This insightful book looks at how companies build a businesses on "network effects". The key case studies are MS, Intel and Cisco. If I had to summarize this book in 1 sentence: build a platform and a business model where multiple companies can add value and be profitable (constellation of ISVs, VARs and Service Providers). Book also covers NTT 3G, Palm, Linux.

Case studies are analyzed on how they used the "4 levers of Platform Leadership": 1) Scope of Firm, 2) Product Technology/Architecture, 3) Relationships with external complementors, and 4) Internal Organization.

        Very well written.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent read.......2002-09-24

I bought this book as part of my MBA thesis. This is an excellent read and full of useful insights. Mssrs Gawer and Cusumano are clearly gurus in this subject.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant strategy for circumventing anti-trust law.......2002-07-23

"a highly effective way of skirting antitrust law" - Professor Ross Anderson. This brilliant book shows how to lock in your customers and lock-out your competitors without falling foul of anti-trust law. Read, learn, inwardly digest ... then go out and make a killing. No serious marketing executive can ignore this book.

          Book Description

Only a few years ago it was believed almost impossible for a newcomer to the saltwater aquarium hobby - even someone with long experience in the freshwater aquarium hobby - to be able to set up an aquarium designed to house not only fish but also the other animals that make the world's coral reefs as vibrantly attractive to viewers as they are. That is no longer true. Today even people with no aquaristic history at all behind them are able to establish miniature reef aquariums and keep them going successfully. Their success is partly the result of the fact that today's synthetic sea salts and equipment, especially the filtration and lighting equipment, are far superior to what has preceded them. But there is another reason as well: the great increase in the body of knowledge about keeping the creatures of the reef alive in our tanks. In this eminently readable book designed for beginners, author Jim Fatherree has succeeded in rendering that knowledge into the form of very practical and easy-to-follow instructions for making the creating of a reef aquarium in the home or office a completely realizable objective.

              Book Description

Warmonger, womanizer, and autocrat, Louis XIV may also have been history’s most fanatical gardener. At Versailles, twelve miles outside Paris, France’s self-styled “Sun King” created not only Europe’s most lavish palace, but, beginning in 1661, the most extensive gardens the Western world has ever seen. Assisting Louis in this enterprise was the low-born gardener André Le Nôtre, whose character and temperament were as different from those of his sovereign as it is possible to conceive. Where Louis was ruthless and relentlessly driven, Le Nôtre was down to earth, witty and amiable – and also phenomenally talented. While Louis could strike fear into the highest in the land with just a look, Le Nôtre enjoyed the king’s trust and friendship for more than 40 years. In this lavishly illustrated book, Ian Thompson tells more comprehensively than ever before the intertwined stories of an extraordinary garden and an extraordinary friendship.

              Customer Reviews:

              4 out of 5 stars LOUIS' EDEN.......2006-11-08

Louis XIV was fortunite in his association with the great Le Notre or I should say he was lucky to have the power of the devine right monarch, so he could steal him from Fouquet and Vieux le Vicomte to work on his Vallala, Versailles. Louis was king incarnate, he was the state, period, the epitome, the very definition of the devine, absolute monarch, and he knew exactly what he wanted and with the genius of Le Notre he created a garden that was and to this day still is the envey of the world. This book does a fine job of capturing Le Notre's gardens at Versailles at their best. The text is enlightening and the images are well conceived. If you have any interest in Versailles or French Formal Gradens, the I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Innovative methods for conservation and beautification using native plants........2005-09-05

I have lived in Phoenix for 25 years. I have a large lot and little success in landscaping. If it looked good it took too much time to maintain and my water bills were sky high. What to do? After 6 weeks in a wheelchair and an irrigation failure I happened on Scott Calhoun's book. He has so many new and practical ideas that will produce a good looking landscape and not be a slave to it. Living in Tucson, he is very savvy about conserving water more than we are in Phoenix. He talks about harvesting water and grading a property to better direct rainfall to planting beds. New ideas for me. I am really quite excited about the opportunities that I recognize now from reading this book.
Oh and if that isn't enough, the book is quite beautiful. Lots of color photography. Many plant varieties are pictured. The writer generously shares his experience of learning about building a "green" home and surrounding it with a true Sonoran desert landscape.
I have lots of books on desert gardening and they all have merit. This is the first one that has given me a new insight into where I live and my responsibility to the ecology of my spot in the desert.
              A true inspiration to me.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Desert Landscaping Adventure.......2005-06-21

Scott takes us on a very personal journey from the building of his home through the design and planting of his garden in the Sonoran desert of Tucson, Arizona. The book is packed with marvelous photos of the house and garden plants, flowers and trees that comprise his little domestic world. The photo quality and color rendition are quite excellent and provide ample evidence of the remarkable variety of plant hues that are made possible by the magical combination of water and brilliant southern Arizona sunshine. Those unfamiliar with this kind of environment will be surprised by the extraordinary palette of color that Scott has lovingly created. He also takes great pride in showing that his award-winning garden, featured in SUNSET and HORTICULTURE magazines,is not an east-coast transplant, but an authentic representation of his region.

The beginning gardener as well as the experienced landscape designer will find an abundance of information and creative inspiration from the first to the last page. The appendices in the back for example, are a real gold mine of useful material.

Even if you don't live in the Sonoran desert, you will enjoy Scott's journey and his warm, relaxed narrative style of writing. However, make no mistake. 5 out of 5 stars Yard Full of Sun is personal and interstingand fun to read........2005-02-26

I thoroughly enjoyed Yard Full of Sun, renegade horticulturist Scott Calhoun's humorous and detailed account of the creation of his family's Arizona home and garden. Mr. Calhoun's funny anecdotes about the challenges of adobe home construction and his startlingly honest observations of married life enhance, but do not obscure the wealth of fascinating information he has compiled about drought-resistant plants, garden design, and water conservation. The author's authentic voice and the rich details he includes make me want to drink Tecate under the Mesquite tree in the Calhouns' backyard and eat tacos at their favorite tire repair shop. The glorious photographs provide endless ideas for the design and decoration of outdoor living spaces, and the useful appendices should prove invaluable to novice and experienced desert gardeners alike. Perhaps what I enjoyed the most, however, was the candid and sincere manner in which Scott Calhoun shares the excitement and beauty, as well as the disagreements and discoouragement one encounters when a dream is pursued with passion.

5 out of 5 stars A very nice looking book.......2004-02-01

I got this along with a cannabis grow
guide manual in the post before
Christmas. Its short but the pictures
are lovely. It is poetic and nice to
read. Although it is *lite* it just
                looks good.

                Enjoy it.

This is a great guide to growing this most medicinal plants. There are several close-up photos where you feel like you are sitting right on a branch of the plant. It is about time there was a book on gardening the natural way -- out of the closet and into the yard. Give the plants sunlight rather than electricity. This slim book explain's much about the plant's needs and even how to make seeds for next year's garden.

5 out of 5 stars landscaping made easy.......2007-06-08

I love this little book because it gets down to the basics of designing and planting a border, without being a huge (expensive) book. Although simply written, I enjoy the author's aesthetic. These are not so much expensive, showy plants, but rather attractive, unfussy plants for sun and shade. Some of them are native plants, useful for attracting birds and insects.

Mediterranean climates such as California, with hot dry summers and mild wet winters, require a different kind of planting than classic European woodland or cottage styles. Here the author encourages thoughtful planning to create the extraordinary effects possible in sunny environments.

                      Book Description

This comprehensive history of the San Joaquin Valley begins with a study of the indigenous Native American tribes of the area and their interactions with one another. It then explores the occupation by the Spanish, the trapping industry, the arrival of settlers from the eastern United States, and the formation of expansive cattle ranches. The development of agriculture and irrigation and the subsequent battles over land and water rights are addressed. Also discussed is the grand era of the railroad, which would forever change the valley, bringing light industry and modern agricultural practices.

                              Book Description

For nearly forty years 'among the glades of Epping Forest' Churchill found a base for his distinguished parliamentary life: it sustained him during his ten years in the political wilderness and during the fierce ordeals of tragedy and triumph in the war years. This book relates with anecdotal and archival evidence the attempt to unseat him after what many supporters thought an injudicious Munich speech. However Churchill was persuaded to stay on by loyal friends, thus ensuring his availability for a Cabinet post a few months later at the br br outbreak of war.

4 out of 5 stars About the only aspect of Churchill left un-plumbed.......2000-09-26

Sir Winston Churchill is one of the most thoroughly biographied people in history, so it's surprising to find a biography that really covers new ground. This one does.

Woodford is the London suburb that Churchill represented in Parliament during the most important decades of his sweeping career. And even while he was striding the world stage, he had responsibilities to the community that elected him. This is an intriguing, and at times surprisingly touching, view of the Great Man's relations with his constituency committee, the candidates who stood for office against him, and the men and women of Woodford.

Most touching is the story of Churchill's ultimate decision to leave Parliament, and the mixture of sadness and relief this occasioned in Woodford. They knew they were lucky to have him. So were we all.
