Customer Reviews:
The best Houston guidebook SO FAR..........2001-08-03
As a visitor, I found Houston to be an amazing, sprawling, quirky, fascinating city. Practically impossible to navigate-- the road maps seem to be printed upside down! Thus any guidebook has its work cut out for it. What I liked about this one, however, was it's enthusiasm. It seems to have been written by people who really love their city and are trying to convey some of the local flavor. It does try to be both a tourist's AND a resident's guide, but the casual visitor may not notice or be bothered by the misinformation and typos that upset my fellow reviewer. I particularly like the clean, modern design and the system of indicating where on the map grid the various places are located. At least this gives one a CLUE!
Hope the next edition is much better.......2001-07-03
Proceed with *much* caution if you are are depending on this book to give you up-to-date, accurate information in its listings. While this book has some good information, it is absolutely rife with errors in both the text and maps it contains. I can open the book to almost any page and find erroneous information in one form or another. Some of these errors could have been caught with a good proofreading job, while other of these errors *should* have been caught by the author(s) and/or editor with the slightest fact-checking effort, and other of these errors are just glaring problems with the book. For instance, there are several different listings and mentions of places that have been closed for at least two years (this book was just published in April 2001). There are also many inexcusable omissions. I give this book 1 star because there really is some good information in it (if you can tell which listings don't have gross errors). If only more of the information in this book were accurate and more complete, and appeared less likely to have come from the weekend section of the newspaper. However, the amount of errors and omissions casts a very negative, "proceed with extreme caution" pall over the book. I consider this product defective and wish you luck in navigating the minefield of errors it contains.

An inspiration to all readers.......2001-01-03
This book has outstanding descriptions, and many facts that readers strive for. Many books lack what talent she has in her writing. Im not much of a reader myself and when it comes to research, I usually misinterpret most of the facts. I could actually read this book and understand it! I suggest this book to all people.

Book Description
One hundred eighty million Americans file income tax returns, almost as many complain about the system, yet few understand the underlying social and economic outcomes. This book carves open the belly of the income tax for Americans who never have had the opportunity to learn about it, and empowers Americans to make informed judgments about what income tax laws would be best. John Fox explains how the laws represent the most comprehensive expression of official government values. Fox also elucidates how special relief provisions far exceed in sheer dollars and importance programs funded directly through the federal budget, and why these special provisions typically fail to advance tax justice or economic growth. Fox presents a compelling argument that our nation's interests would be best served by overhauling the system through reforms that eliminate all but the most essential special relief provisions, while reducing tax rates across the board. Such reforms, he argues, are far more compatible with principles of liberals and conservatives than is today's system. Part primer, part manifesto, If Americans Really Understood the Income Taxis sure to open the eyes of tax-paying Americans and earn the respect of policy experts.

Only the FairTax Outfoxes Fox.......2005-05-12
John Fox says the values of our government are represented in the tax system and that Congress has pursued social and economic programs through the tax system by using deductions and credits that amount to 3 trillion dollars (in 2000) of un-taxed income.
John Fox obviously loves the FairTax. The FairTax does all those things and more, repealing the income tax, employee taxes, corporate taxes and more while fully funding the US government. Everyone also gets a monthly rebate so noone pays any tax at all up to the poverty level.
Fox says the U.S. would have a stronger economy without these provisions. He suggests doing away with all but the most essential special relief provisions, and implementing a simpler tax code that would reduce taxes for all brackets.
If we get rid of the income tax and become the first nation on earth to NOT tax productivity, "outsourced" jobs return and foreign companies come to America to do business.
Everything John Fox advocates is taken just a step farther with the FairTax.
Must read.......2004-07-06
John Fox's take on taxes is a must read for anyone who cares about tax equity and the well-being of the body politic. When I first studied taxes as an employee of the California Legislature -- now nearly four decades ago -- we learned that simple equity -- equal treatment of equals -- was the first principle of a fair and just tax system; absent equity the system would be manifestly unfair and eventually would lose its legitimacy, the greatest danger a democratic republic can face. As Fox points out, that's exactly what's happening with modern tax policy -- regressive, unfair, unjust are the attributes that leap out at you. But Fox does more than point the finger of blame; he offers constructive suggestions to get the system back where it belongs, to restore fairness and legitimacy.
Income Tax Ignorance.......2002-03-16
Plain and simple, the Amercan people know nothing when it comes to Income Taxes. They know nothing about their Constitutional Rights with regards to the Income Tax and they do not know how to use the three Internal Revenue Code Sections in the Prvacy Act Notice in the 1040 instruction booklet. An old saying is quoted by judges; "Ignorance of the Law is no excuse". The very first IRC section in the Privacy Act Notice is 6001. Most people would not know where to search for the information of this code section. The very first sentence implies Liability. In looking in the Index of the IRC under Liability for Tax, you will find all of the subjects that are taxed. Income is NOT one of them. For tax purposes, Income is defined by the Supreme Court as a Gain or Profit earned by Privlege. Every citizen of the USA has a Right to work for compensation. I rated this book low and the little bit of expose offered is proof that the author does not know or implies he does not know the Truth about the Income Tax.

My wife took my copy and I will have to buy another........2001-05-20
This is an excellent book. It has been written in a comprehensive style that can enlighten taxpayers as well as tax professionals. Every one can benefit from the collected information and well-conceived opinions of Mr. Fox. This book can serve as a wellspring to initiate questions, debate, or perhaps a citizen's revolt against our present archaic, confusing, and unequal tax system. Mr. Fox has obviously been working on this book for several years, but his phenomenal foresight has placed this brilliant work in our hands at just the right moment when we consider the major tax law changes now being considered by the U.S. Executive and Legislative branches of our government. The proposed changes could have a profound negative effect on our children and us. In the 18th century American citizens had a tea party in Boston because of unfair taxes. What will our generation do? Whimper and complain or become informed and proactive?

A comprehensive guide to canaries and related finches........1999-03-17
This book is very well illustrated with lots of useful information on type, song, and color canaries. In addition, it is an invaluable resource which deals with finches representing the CARDUELIDAE finches (canaries, serins, goldfinches, siskins, seedeaters, and rosefinches), the EMBERIZIDAE finches (buntings and finch-buntings), the THRAUPIDAE finches (grosbeaks, tanagers, and cardinals), and the ALAUDIDAE finches (larks). Although some of these species are not available to American aviculturalists, the book makes for interesting reading. The information contained in it is reliable and is encyclopedic in extent. In addition to general care sections on canaries and finches, each variety or species is explained in detail with sections on description, origin and habits, keeping, breeding, and feeding. The only criticism is that this very readable translation from the German retains the German enthusiasm for capitalization of the common names of species.

Honest review.......2001-11-24
OK, here it is: This book is a waste! Very little new information. It is only 76 pages with many pages with just pictures. (...)
Good Info! Pee-yew writing!.......2001-11-11
I just finished this book, and while I am by no means an expert, I've "forced" a few flowers in my time. For the most part the information is good and I did find a few nuggets that I definitely will use (very interesting the part about napthelene), but --sorry Tom-- the writing is stinko! The sentence structure is so poor and "high school" that at times I found myself having to read some sentences over and over again so I could understand what he was talking about! I wasn't stoned reading this, but he may have been stoned writing it. There's constant annoying reiteration of material and I haven't quite figured out if that is intentional or just more poor writing. It's kind've like, "As a said in the last sentence and the last paragraph and the last chapter...blah blah blah." I also found a few direct contradictions with other books that are considered classics and tried-and-true bibles on the subject. Ouch Tom! COOLER temperatures promote females, not hotter! Again, a few very interesting points and techniques, but for the most part information that is better had from other books. I recommend spending ten more bucks and purchasing Indoor Marijuana Horticulture by Jorge Cervantes. A few typos, but the info is excellent, well-researched, well-illustrated, complete and clear.
Disappointed.......1999-08-07
Only one page in chapter 4 " Outdoor Growing Tips" that discusses flower forcing techniques outdoors. And,there are only three pages in this "Chapter" !! Lots of good info if you are an indoor grower, but the book did not offer what I was looking for.
a good book, for beginers.......1999-07-22
I thought this book was great, it had it pros and cons. Such as, it didn't describe the drying process in great detail, and we all know this is the most important part. all and all it was a good book.
Grow monster sized buds indoors.......1998-07-26
This book simplifies the often confusing subject of indoor growing. Tom seems to know the subject better than other indoor gardening authors. All areas of gardening are covered. I liked the book a lot. A must for the cannabis gardener. I especially liked the historical information.

Book Description
As one of the first female missionaries to the New World and the author of a classic mystical autobiography, Marie de l'Incarnation has long been seen as an exemplary type, reflecting the mood and aims of the Catholic Reformation. In contrast to studies which portray her against the backdrop of religious trends in Catholic Reformation France, this book argues that the New France wilderness was the crucial context for the formation of her spiritual identity. Marie de l'Incarnation brought her traditional notions to bear on her encounter with the Amerindians, but was soon compelled to adjust her views on the natives and the nature of religious experience. A close textual analysis of her writings makes it clear that her mysticism was informed by the images of her tradition, but also gave new meaning to old concepts. Beyond its relevance for those interested in this mystic, the book addresses the broader issue of shifting attitudes and boundaries in early modern religious life and demonstrates the need for more variegated typologies of mystical experience in studies on spiritual literature.

Terrible View of James Dean.......2007-06-20
I am a huge fan of James Dean and while I had time at my local bookstore, I was dying to have a book about him. I saw Boulevard of Broken Dreams: The Life, Times and Legend of James Dean and immediately, without thinking twice, I purchased it. I was excited about reading it but when I got home, I immediately became disgusted and disappointed about what I was reading, so disgusted that I returned it the next day. To me, it was purely porn, but in a different form. Although I only skimmed through pages and pictures and did not read the whole thing, the bits and pieces I did happen to read made me feel sick. It portrayed Dean as being a masochistic, sex-craving, selfish individual, opposite the descriptions of others he had been associated with (Julie Harris, Pier Angeli, Martin Landau, etc.), those who I believe, would have the advantage of actually knowing him. Of course, other books about James have touched up on his alleged bisexuality/homosexuality but this book by far has proven to be a flop. The picture of the nude man that the author claims to be Dean is truly wrong because extensive research has proven that the man in the photo is not James, but a mentally-disabled young man who had been exploited by his cousin. This book is disgusting filth and is in no way a tribute to the late actor, but a way to tarnish his image and the person he was best remembered to be. Don't waste your time or money on this like I did.
Judge for yourself and don't neccessarily believe all the negative reviews.......2007-03-15
It's quite frustrating to read all the negative reviews here. Paul Alexander has written other critically acclaimed biographies and from this background there is no reason to believe he was just some lousy reporter interested in writing a badly researched, scandalous tabloid biography, although this is just what some reviewers here wrongly claim.
There are two rather detailed (homo)sexual scenes, and that's all. Of course one wonders how Alexander recreated them (he doesn't list his sources in footnotes and just mentions how he tried to recreate dialogue and scenes through in-depth interviews) but they are in no way the common theme of the book.
Alexander's prose is elegantly clear, empathic and evocative. What seems to annoy some reviewers is that he tries to bring to light elements of Dean's life biographies back then (this book was originally published in 1995) - and maybe even today - tried to avoid or probably suppress. From this point of view this is still an informed and reasonably balanced piece of work and in no way the lurid scam it is depicted to be in some reviews here. Some "fans" probably hate their romantic myths about Dean shattered or are too uncomfortable with homosexuality to see it mentioned in a James Dean biography.
What is strange, though, is the fact that the recently published book by Willam Bast, which probably deals more with Dean's (homo)sexuality than Alexander's book, doesn't get as many negative reviews as this book here. Maybe times have changed.
Anyway, I think there is no such thing as "the" James Dean biography. If you want to seriously know more about him you should read several biographies to get to know different points of view. But Paul Alexander's work should not be missed.
Incompetent.......2006-07-03
Yes, this biography is numbingly obsessed with James Dean's sexuality, but it's also terribly written and edited.
It's full of redundancies, horribly constructed sentences, narrative strands that are left hanging, and amateurish reporting. (Although the author tries to overcompensate with an excessively detailed, boring account of the days leading up to Dean's fatal car crash.)
Don't waste your money.
superb style, memorable quotes.......2006-03-25
I am surprised that no one has remarked upon this biography's excellent style. Here are a few memorable passages:
1. In Salt Lake City, [his mother's] coffin, covered with flowers, was removed from the train and placed on the station platform near Jimmy's window [he was a boy of nine] "Oh, my mother! That's my mother!" Jimmy was supposed to have said. "I'm going out there. I'm going to stand right beside her!" And with the train's nurse by his side, that's what he did, until the coffin was moved back on board.
2. For years, the people of Fairmount would gossip about what Jimmy was supposed to have said when [...] on his eighteenth birthday, he reported to the local draft board. Was there a reason why he should'nt be drafted? [...] Yes, there was. [...] "You can't draft me," he said. "I'm homosexual."
3. [Of his father's resistance to the idea of him becoming an actor] A father's pull on a son may be basic, but an art form's pull on an artist is hypnotic.
4. No true artist fits into the world in which he lives. If he did, he would cease to be the observer and become the observed.
It certainly seems plausible that much of Dean's rebellion proceeded from his homosexuality. After all, our inherited culture denies that men can ever really love each other, with the limited and highly qualified exception of father and son. In other cultures Dean would not have been such a rebel, perhaps. But Dean seems also to have had a certain heterosexual component to his nature. So he seems to have resembled pagan Greek men, bisexual, but with the emphasis on the homosexual side. This is what most of the people who knew him most intimately said about him. But he was promoted by an intensely homophobic culture as a heterosexual sex object of a somewhat new kind - rebellious, but safely hetero. Nevertheless there was just enough of the gay element lurking in the shadows (especially in Rebel Without a Cause) to add a certain wicked allurement.
All this must have made him personally very uncomfortable, to say the least. Montgomery Clift (see Leonard's bio) and Errol Flynn (see Bret's bio) were made so uncomfortable by this pretense that they indulged in very self-destructive behavior. It cannot be very rewarding to be idolized by strangers who, if they knew about one's most basic personality trait - who one falls in love with - would find one utterly hateful and contemptible. There certainly was a kind of death wish in driving a car at 100 or 120 mph on a highway.
The homophobes here seem to be most disturbed by the few sex scenes Alexander inserts. They are in fact rather prim, except for a sentence or two. But even these are more clinical than pornographic.
The famous nude photo of Dean as Greek faun is included.
Modern biographies are almost always written in a wooden, journalistic style that makes them more a duty than a pleasure to read. This bio does not entirely avoid the fault, but is nevertheless full of beautiful phrases and memorable lines. I enjoyed reading it.
Disgusting.......2005-08-26
This book focuses not on the life, influence or anything of meaning about James Dean, just his supposed sexual history. In detail. I have no idea where this information was obtained, but I seriously doubt it holds true. This was the worst book I have read on him. Maybe he was bisexual, maybe he wasn't. And while, yes, it is fine to discuss it briefly, this seemed to overtake the entire book. If you are obsessed with untrue and "juicy" information, then this book is for you, but if you want actual truth and information on the beauty of James Dean as a person, the DO NOT READ THIS. A much better book is "James Dean the Mutant King."

The World of Birds By: Ronika.......2005-12-16
WARNING- This book may be very addictive. The book The Night Flyers is by Elizabeth McDavid Jones. This book is very suspenseful.
The Night Flyers is about a girl named Pam. This takes place in Currituck, North Carolina 1918, when the World War I was occurring. Pam gets an offer for her pigeons from a German, and she thinks he's a spy, so she says no. A couple of days later her pigeons star to disappear. Then she suspects it's the German man named Arminger. One day she sees Arminger's truck, while letting her dog, Bosporus, out. She follows the truck. She goes through the back and sees all these pigeon's lofts. When about to go into another loft someone captures her....... Read and find out what happens next.
I would give this book a 10, out of 10 stars because I LOVE to read mystery books and it's very suspenseful. You should read it because it is REALLY good. It also leaves you hanging and you just don't want to put it down. Now get up and go pick it up at your local bookstore. Find out what happens next to Pam in The Night Flyers.
The Night Flyers.......2003-06-11
A mysterious man shows up at Pam's loft wanting to buy her pigeons. He says he'll give her $200 for all her pigeons.Pam said "No." The next night,he shows up again wanting her pigeons. He said he'll give her $200 for two pigeon but Pam still won't sell them. Then her pigeons start to disappear. Pam gets in some trouble trying to find her pigeons. Read this book to find out who stole Pam's pigeons.
OK, But not a "High Flyer" in my book........2003-05-28
I read this book in about 3 1/2 hours. I had previously read one other "History Mystery" book about 3 years ago when I was in 4th grade. The plot of the story is this:
12 year old Pam Lowder hates school. She especially hates her worst enemy, Henry. When she discovers that her prize winning pigeons with the rare ability to "home" at night are missing, she is furious, and the mysterious Mr. Arminger, a new man in town with a German accent, is a prime suspect. (The whole town believes that he is a German spy, it is World War I) Pam must collect her wits and, well, do something about it.
A definate 5 star book!.......2002-08-25
It's 1918 and Pam's dad is in the army for WW1 he gives Pam pigeons before he leaves to go to the war. She takes excellent care of them but when a mysterious man comes to her farm that talks like he's a German and he wants Pam's pigeons Pam believes that her dad's pigeons are in danger.
I really enjoyed this book and I've read almost all of the history mysteries and this is one of the best ones there are!

Cooool!.......2003-03-31
The Night Flyers and Hoofbeats of Danger start out more interseting then the other book. The night Flyers is about a young girl named Pam Lowerdy from North Caroline Currituck in the year 1918. She meets a strange man with a german accent who offers 100 dollars for just 1 pigeon. After refusing him many times a couple pigeons went missing. After finding out that the stranger was actually working for the USA government and only had the accent because he was pennsivania dutch it left her with one suspect. Buell Sugg her neighbor. But at the end the person who stole her pigeons was someone she never would have expected...Read the book and find out!
Hoofbeats of Danger is about an eleven year old girl named Annie Dawson who lived somewhere in the west at Red Buttes Station. Her favorite horse Magpie one night started acting funny, loco, and was wanted shot. She got her indian friend Redbird Wilson secretly and she told her that magpie was poisoned. After finding out who did it her and her friend Billy Cody chased the outlaw. He jumped in the rapids and tried to swim away. Billy jumped in after him and the rapids swept them away. Did magpie survive and did Billy get out of the rapids ok? Well what happened is.......=D You have to read the book to find out!!
Historical Horses.......2001-01-06
Of these 3 books I have read only one, Hoofbeats of Danger. This story is set in the 1860's and is about a young girl named Annie. She lives at one of the Pony Express Stations and sees a lot of horses come through but she has one favorite horse, Magpie. When she finds Magpie acting very strangely she has to solve the mystery of what's happening to her. I liked this book because I like mysteries and it's really exciting. Because these books are History Mysteries they teach you something about what really happened in history, too. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Book Description
This delightful illustrated book shows how every child has a vivid imagination and revels in one child's midnight adventures. A six-year-old boy finds adventure and escape through his nightly dreams; leaving his home to soar upon a moonbeam while his body remains asleep upon his homebound bed. Our 'nightflyer' sees amazing sights like the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, the pyramids, Mt. Fuji, and the Taj Mahal. He must hurry because his time of freedom is limited and soon will awaken. Spying a lovely desert isle, a peg-legged pirate challenges him to a fight and he manages to outwit the pirate and free the enslaved natives. The adventurer swims among the fish and coral, unaware the owl's eyes are beginning to close and the rooster is nearly about to crow. Dawn approaches and our hero must return to his own bed and reality. His mother hears about all his marvelous escapades and encourages him to have more wonderful adventures. He can hardly wait for the next night's flight and the freedom his dreams allow. Beautifully illustrated and written in gentle rhyme, this lovely storybook is a must read for any parent, child, or classroom in acquaintance with a genuine 'nightflyer'!

Product Description
Before Pams father left to fight in World War I, the two of them trained their pigeons to fly home at night, a time when most birds just want to sleep. This interests a stranger with a foreign accent who comes to town and offers to pay a lot of money for Pams birds. But when Pam refuses to sell and some of her birds are later stolen, she suspects the stranger may be more than a simple bird enthusiast. He may be an enemy spy!
