A great help for introducing change.......2007-02-04
Fearless Change is a catalogue of patterns for introducing change in a company. Personally I've been in the role of change agent for years and this book provided me many "ah-hah"s which you get from reading good patterns. Most of the patterns I've applied in the past. Now I realized it and I got a name for them, which makes me more able to reuse the patterns. Some of the patterns were new to me and I've applied them immediately in my work.
The book is organized in three parts. The first part tells short stories on the different phases of change. These stories already made me understand the basics of the patterns and how they were related. The second part has a couple of case studies. Personally I found this part rather boring, but it was very short. The third part of the book is the actual pattern catalogue which provided the needed details.
The book was easy to read and, except for the case studies, didn't make me feel bored at any time. I've learned an awful lot from the book and it gave me some new tools in my toolbox when trying to introduce change.
I've rated this book 4 stars, which should have been 4.5 starts, but I don't have that option. I wouldn't want to give it 5 stars for the small boring parts and since I wouldn't call it perfect yet, but close! The books is an absolute must for anyone introducing change in an organization though!
Patterns for change.......2006-10-24
Another patterns book -- it certainly is a popular type of book these days. I got about half-way through this one before someone else wanted to read it. What can I say? Not bad. Recommended reading if you're trying to introduce a change in the way people work. The stories or case studies are pretty readable. But I'm not sure how much it helps to give little (pattern) names in brackets inside every other sentence. Pick up any book about industrial success like Marriot or The HP Way and you'd probably do just as well. The important thing is to read about others' similar successes and how they did it, and always to get help from lots of other people.
An useful catalog.......2006-03-02
Just like all books on patterns, this gives you the feeling of 'oh, this is soooo obvious' the first reading it. The fact is that a second after reading it you start thinking and talking about brown bags, angles and evangelists and refer to the book all the time. Linda and Mary Lynn give us an idiom, a very very useful idiom.
Also, the book is funny. Must read.
Change will always be hard, but this book helps a lot.......2005-05-29
Change is hard. I've been part of companies that merged, were acquired, acquired others, downsized drastically, changed the CEO, moved corporate headquarters to another state and completely changed their target market. The change was difficult in each of these circumstances. That's not particularly surprising. What is surprising is that change is also difficult when doing something as seemingly simple as changing the company health plan. I wish I'd read this book before going through those changes.
A large part of my current work is in helping companies manage the transition from how they currently develop software to developing software with an "agile process." The book codified some of the things I've done for years without thinking about why but more importantly it also presented ideas I hadn't thought of. For example, the "Champion Skeptic" pattern says to designate a skeptical, strong opinion leader to be the "official skeptic." I've always made a point of involving these skeptics because they can become your best advocates if you convert them. However, I've experimented with the idea as presented here and it works well.
Change will remain hard, even after reading this book. But, you'll be much better prepared and you should find many of the patterns here very helpful.
Powerful, yet simple, change toolkit.......2005-05-12
I had found myself moderately successful at introducing new ideas and influencing change in my organizations, but never knew why, or how to improve my ability to influence and sustain the change effort. The lightbulb was illuminated immediately upon getting a few patterns into this book- I had been, in one way or another, using some of these patterns without realizing it. Opportunities I had failed to take advantage of in the past became obvious as well in many patterns that were new to me, and in the past went unrecognized (next time, they will either be easy to spot or part of the plan in the first place!)
Once you are able to recognize techniques as patterns, influence becomes something much more controllable. This is a powerful, easy-to-use (and reuse) toolkit for introducing ideas and influencing change. I believe that those experienced in influencing change will find a well thought out set of techniques and those unsure of even how to start will have a great roadmap and set of practices to start with and to invoke as-needed as their change efforts evolve.

This is a review for a book no one has asked J. Acomb "Typeface diva" to comment on a breed itself. I happen to like this breed and was looking for a book review not someone's smart comment.
Adopt!.......2007-02-20
Designer dogs are mutts sold for expensive prices. They are not a breed, because breeds must conform to certain specifications- size, shape, temperament, and so forth. When you purchase a designer dog, you are effectivly buying a lottery ticket to what may either be the puppy you have been promised, or a genetic nightmare. When dogs of two completely different breeds are bred, you can have NO idea on what the puppies will look like. You can't guarentee what the coat will look like, how large or small they will be, what their attitude will be like, or whether or not they will have a plethora of genetic problems.
Because of this, thousand of designer dogs are abandoned to shelters when their owners realize that the dog was not what the breeder had promised them.
RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS DO NOT BREED DESIGNER DOGS!
If you want a dog of a specific cross, look at your local humane society! There are mutts abounds there, and they have been tested for health and temperament problems. Go to [...], and you can even search by type of breed for dogs and cats near your home.
Contribute by saving an animal for [...]$ instead of helping overpopulation by spending 500$ on a puppy whose future you can't be able to predict.

A condensed, informative manual for the new puppy owner........1997-12-09
This book is a comprehensive manual of practical information for the beginning or novice pet owner. Ms. Agresta presents her material in an organized fashion, starting with the history and development of the breed, from its origin to the Labrador retriever today. She speaks from a personal point of view, reflecting her years of experience distilled down to a brief form.
All the basics are covered, with helpful drawings and photos in support. She covers health care, first aid, orthopedic problems, and other practical issues. A wide range of breed examples are presented, representing various ages and types. The third section of the book includes chapters written by experts in their own fields, addressing basic training in various fields, such as obedience, field trials, hunt tests, herding, and agility, and most importantly, the Labrador retriever in the family home. Each subject is presented briefly, but positively, with information, encouragement and guidance to the reader. The author offers lists of recommended reading covering a wide range of subjects. I would recommend giving it to new puppy owners.

My life east and west (The Lakeside classics)
ASIN: 0806135581 |
Book Description
Stage actor turned Hollywood star, William S. Hart (1864-1946) was for movie fans a cherished symbol of the romantic Old West. His silent westerns offered excitement, lessons in righteous behavior, and a nostalgic vision of the American frontier. This intriguing biography explores the personal and professional life of Hollywood's prototypical cowboy hero. Born in Newburgh, New York, Hart grew up in a Victorian atmosphere that gave rise to the rigid morality prevalent in many of his films. From 1914 to 1924, he appeared in or produced more than sixty movies, but it was not until he abandoned Shakespearean characters for parts in The Squaw Man and The Virginian that Hart truly assumed his western persona. For the first time, readers are given insights into Hart's somewhat lonely and tragic personal life, his quarrels with exploitive studios, and his association with such latter-day frontier legends as Charles M. Russell, Bat Masterson, and Wyatt Earp, who regarded him as a kindred spirit. Other highlights of this book include excerpts from his previously unpublished letters to starlet Jane Novak, Hart's one-time fiancée, as well as numerous photographs from studio and private collections.
Drawing on Hart's papers, primary sources of the Motion Picture Academy, oral histories, and contemporary newspapers, this chronicle of Hart's life is the first since his own starry-eyed autobiography, My Life East and West, appeared in 1929.
Customer Reviews:
A Note to Dr Davis.......2006-01-09
I just know it could have been a lot better. Davis is talented at picking his subjects, from John Ford to Linda Darnell to Van Johnson, for in each case we wanted to know a whole lot about each personality, and then he had the additional gift of being able to do thorough research, and yet somewhere between the wish and the execution the person slips away, but it just might be that Davis isn't a very good writer, at least in the traditional sense of making people come alive. I think I wound up knowing less about William Hart after reading the book than I did before, because now I'm just confused.
His antagonistic thrust against Hart is puzzling. If Hart was such a bad actor and negligible screen presence, why did people adore him and how did he stay on top of the screen world for so long? Davis never answers these questions. When he wrote about poor Van Johnson, he explained away Johnson's reign on top of the box office charts by, pretty much, MGM paying for it (cheating, as it were). But in Hart's case, was he able to make literally hundreds of films through payola? I don't think so! Come on, Ronald Davis, next time write a book about someone you really like! We haven't seen your sympathetic side yet, just your Kitty Kelley sneer side.
Prototype of the Western Star.......2004-05-07
William S. Hart and Tom Mix helped establish the model of the western action star. Mix was a lovable character on screen who presaged Gene Autry, and Hart expressed a deeply thoughtful, stoic, Shakespearean quality that survived into the best work of Gary Cooper, John Wayne, and Clint Eastwood. Ronald Davis provides the first indepth look at Hart's life and craft. Hart is not always a pleasant person, but great artists often do not fit the mode of a "nice guy." Hart was deeply interested in the West and formed close friendships with some of the region's great characters (such as Wyatt Earp) in an attempt to broaden his understanding of what the "West" meant. This biography is well written and reads nicely, drawing on newly available letters from Hart's collection. Anyone interested in early Hollywood or the development of the Western should have this book on their shelf. Let's hope Davis will turn his attention to that other great early Western star, Tom Mix.
Useful But Unsympathetic.......2004-05-02
This slender volume offers an overview of Hart's life and an appraisal of his work, without detailed analysis of individual films.
Unfortunately, the tragic view of life which was central to Hart's personality and art appears to arouse the author's hostility. In fact, Prof. Davis has little use for Hart as a human being, assaulting him with a wide range of denigratory epithets: "rigid", "melodramatic", "immature", "self-pitying", "whining", and even "wimpish"(!). Hart's famous 1939 spoken introduction to TUMBLEWEEDS, which most viewers find quite moving, is here described as "bombastic". In short, the reader is caught in a clash of personalities between author and subject.
The book's greatest asset is an abundance of new biographical information, gleaned from Hart's own letters and other sources, pertaining mostly to his later years.
Diane Koszarski's COMPLETE FILMS OF WILLIAM S. HART, with its excellent introductory essay, is a good introduction to this film-maker's work. Despite Prof. Davis' efforts, there is still a need for full-length biographical study which takes Hart seriously as a person and as an artist.

Customer Reviews:
A great overview of a very interesting time and man!.......1998-09-26
With the life of Samuel Seabury on the pages discribed in detail and the photos that acompany the text you can get a real feel for the man and his time. All of this against the backdrop of New York City Politics. Samuel Seabury was known in all circles as standing for the height of ethics in his time. Something lacking on todays political landscape. A facinating read that never slows page after page.
Nathan David Seabury 25 Sept 1998.

Book Description
Herbert Samuel's extraordinarily long political life coincided with the long drawn-out sunset of Liberalism as a dominant political force in Britain. His career in the Liberal Party began in the age of Gladstone and ended in the era of Grimond. At the turn of the century Samuel played a vital role in the formulation of the `New Liberalism', and later helped translate that doctrine into legislation that laid the foundations of the welfare state. He played a central role in the history of Zionism, serving as first British High Commissioner in Palestine from 1920 to 1925. He returned to office in the National Government of 1931, and led the Liberal Party between 1931 and 1935. In later life Samuel won a broad public audience as a philosopher, a respected elder statesman, and a much admired broadcaster. Bernard Wasserstein assesses Samuel's importance in British politics and in the emergence of the state of Israel. This accessible and scholarly biography, based on extensive research in all the available sources, provides a revealing portrait of a leading twentieth-century statesman.
