                  Book Description

Only today's atomic submarines have outstripped the fabulous twin-funneled K boats--the biggest, fastest submarines of World War I. But no other class of warship suffered so much calamity and controversy. Authorized by Churchill, these steam-powered submarines became the best-concealed debacle in British naval history. This book provides some answers to what went wrong during the series of dreadful mishaps.

This is a concise and highly interesting book of a time of early submarine development and the ill fated K Boats. My Grandfather Stoker 1st Class Henry Fulcher was one of the few survivors following a collision at night during the Battle of May Island (Jan 31st 1918) where his submarine(K17) was rammed and sunk by one of our own ships (HMS Fearless). There were 9 survivors and there would have been more if our own destroyers were aware of them in the water that fateful night and did not mow them down !

This is a fascinating book on the early steam warships. Before I read this book, I only imagined paddle boats to be like Mississippi river boats. The book has all the technical information one would need on the design and technology of these warship, including great b/w photos and diagrams.

                        Amazon.com

The lure of this book's promise starts with the assumption in its title. Possibility--that big, all-encompassing, wide-open-door concept--is an art? Well, who doesn't want to be a skilled artist, whether in the director's chair, the boardroom, on the factory floor, or even just in dealing with life's everyday situations? Becoming an artist, however, requires discipline, and what the authors of The Art of Possibility offer is a set of practices designed to "initiate a new approach to current conditions, based on uncommon assumptions about the nature of the world."

If that sounds a little too airy-fairy for you, don't be put off; this is no mere self-improvement book, with a wimpy mandate to transform its readers into "nicer" people. Instead, it's a collection of illustrations and advice that suggests a way to change your entire outlook on life and, in the process, open up a new realm of possibility. Consider, for example, the practice of "Giving an A," whether to yourself or to others. Not intended as a way to measure someone's performance against standards, this practice instead recognizes that "the player who looks least engaged may be the most committed member of the group," and speaks to their passion rather than their cynicism. It creates possibility in an interaction and does away with power disparities to unite a team in its efforts. Or consider "Being the Board," where instead of defining yourself as a playing piece, or even as the strategist, you see yourself as the framework for the entire game. In this scenario, assigning blame or gaining control becomes futile, while seeking to become an instrument for effective partnerships becomes possible.

Packed with such examples of personal and professional interactions, the book presents complex ideas on perception and recognition in a readable, useable style. The authors' combined, eclectic experience in music and painting (as well as family therapy and executive workshops) infuses their examples with vibrant color and sound. The relevance to corporate situations and relationships is well developed, and they don't rely on dry case studies to do it. Indeed, this book assumes the emotional intelligence and desire to engage of its reader, promising access to the rewards of that door-opening notion--possibility--in return. --S. Ketchum

                        Book Description

Presenting twelve breakthrough practices for bringing creativity into all human endeavors, The Art of Possibility is the dynamic product of an extraordinary partnership. The Art of Possibility combines Benjamin Zander's experience as conductor of the Boston Philharmonic and his talent as a teacher and communicator with psychotherapist Rosamund Stone Zander's genius for designing innovative paradigms for personal and professional fulfillment.

The authors' harmoniously interwoven perspectives provide a deep sense of the powerful role that the notion of possibility can play in every aspect of life. Through uplifting stories, parables, and personal anecdotes, the Zanders invite us to become passionate communicators, leaders, and performers whose lives radiate possibility into the world.

                        Download Description

The Art of Possibility offers a set of breakthrough practices for creativity in all human enterprises. This inspirational book is a synthesis of Rosamund Stone Zander's knowledge of cutting-edge psychology and Benjamin Zander's experiences as the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Infused with the energy of their dynamic partnership, the book joins together Ben's extraordinary talent as a mover and shaker, teacher, and communicator with Rosamund's genius for creating innovative paradigms for personal and professional fulfillment. In lively counterpoint, the authors provide us with a deep sense of the powerful role that the notion of possibility can play in every aspect of our lives. The Zanders' deceptively simple practices are based on two premises: that life is composed as a story ("it's all invented") and that, with new definitions, much more is possible than people ordinarily think. The book shifts our perspective with uplifting stories, parables, and anecdotes. From "Giving an A" to the mysterious "Rule Number 6" to "Leading from Any Chair"--the account of Ben's stunning realization that the conductor/leader's power is directly linked to how much greatness he is willing to grant to others--each practice offers an opportunity for personal and organizational transformation.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Possibillities.......2007-10-11

I had seen the DVD prior to reading the book so was visually aware of what was being written about. I think the book brought out more details from both authors. As I now reflect on what I received from reading this book I believe 'humility' stands out. Rule #6 has life changing value. Also that there exist possibilities of greatest actualization and service beyond perfection and self. A must read book.

                        5 out of 5 stars inspirational.......2007-09-28

This book continues to change my life. I loved their key phrases to remember their ideas. I suggested it to many of my teacher friends and people on our board of education - where money is so tight and so many cuts are being made -this book inspires you to the many possibilities you can create.

4 out of 5 stars Reshaping the "box".......2007-09-06

This book is thought provoking and stimulating. It is not an easy read, but definately gives you the tools to seek new ways of viewing almost any situation in a more positive light. I highly recommend this to anyone who is ready to not to merely think outside of the box, but reshape their box entirely.

5 out of 5 stars No change without leadership.......2007-08-27

There is no change without leadership at all levels. This book is a good introduction into the principles of transformational leadership. Creating Possibilities for others such that they are touched moved and inspired. The leadership theory is based on leading oneself not others and focuses on who you are being not what you are doing. This is not a book about manipulative Machiavellian techniques rather it's about creating free choice for others where they are inspired by the possibility you have created.

5 out of 5 stars A personal growth book for the nearly-jaded.......2007-08-16

I've been reading books for years now that are designed to inspire and lead one toward personal growth in relationships, in the workplace, in life in general. I'm a junkie for this kind of book, and therefore I've become somewhat jaded as well, never really expecting anything new but always hoping. What a delight, therefore, to be utterly surprised by THE ART OF POSSIBILITY. This book delivers! The Zanders' approach is revolutionary, shining real light amongst the plethora of jingoistic motivational books that abound these days. There is nothing self-centered or bumper stickerish or rah-rah cheerleady in this book. It has real depth, it never skims the surface or lets us off the hook. Benjamin is conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Rosamund is a painter and therapist. They bring their stunning creativity and imagination into real life -- their lives -- and show us how we, too, can compose and conduct our lives, paint our future. It's an exciting book, one that I've now read three times and underlined and highlighted and excerpted onto sticky notes for my computer and mirror and calendar. No wonder they are being called on to speak to leading business and professional groups.

5 out of 5 stars Very Funny Pet Humor.......2003-12-21

This book of "recipes" is hilarious. I'd recommend it to any pet owner; even dog owners will see the humor. There are descriptions as well as "recipes" for cooking Mouse. Book is good for all ages of readers - even kids will see the humor in it. Somehow I favored the intricate "Roast Leg of Spring Mouse" and "Mousetail Soup" for the mental images they portray.

                              3 out of 5 stars Cute..........2003-12-08

While this was a cute book, I didn't find it overly funny. There were 25 recipes from all over the world for cooking a mouse. It's not a book I'd purchase because I don't think I'd read it again or recommend it to anyone. There were a few recipes that were cute, such as Mouse In Black Bean Sauce, a Chinese dish that will leave your cat hungry again in an hour. And Tandoori Mouse, where Mahatma Gandhi tried to convince his cat to choose a vegetarian diet. The cat's response was: "You know what you can do with your brown rice".

My Wife and I tried this book for our 2 young cats, and after we spent a while in the kitchen, making the treat for them, they didn't even want to eat it! We finally tricked them by adding the home-made treat to their favorite canned food.

This book is extremely useful to camera collectors of more recent equipment. There are few pictures and the prices are often way off from present sale prices, BUT many cameras (especially from the 1950s to the 80s) are covered here that are not mentioned in any of the other camera guides. This makes this work unique and very useful. The spread sheet format takes some getting used to, but it allows a great deal of information to be given in a small amount of space. I use my copy daily, along with my McKeown's. I hope they issue a revised edition.

1 out of 5 stars An inadequate compilation........1998-10-01

This camera catalog is essentially useless unless one is interested only in basic camera prices and basic cameras. Any camera catalog that contains information about single lens reflex cameras but excludes technical and price information about accessory lenses for those cameras, as this one does, might just as well not exist.

A definitive account of this fascinating genus of woodland perennials. With notes on horticultural selections and care of epimediums, this book covers all epimediums---many discovered only in the last decade. In addition, the documentation extends to other herbaceous Berberidaceae, including the genus Podophyllum. Exquisite paintings from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, complement the text.

                                  Book Description

This book, consisting of three self-contained studies, deals with the Euripidean messenger-speech. The first study concerns the form of the messenger-speech, which is that of a first-person narrative, and the consequences of this form. The second study analyses the messenger's style of presentation. In the third study the place and function of the messenger-speech within the play is discussed. Although scholars have dealt with the messenger-speech before, there is no single, up-to-date work of reference available. The present study aims at filling this void, while making use of analytical tools deriving from narratology and drama-theory. Eight appendices are added, which provide the reader with complete lists of phenomena discussed in the main text. Often considered transparent and self-explanatory, the messenger-speeches are now shown to be both complex and subtle texts.

The late Sir Alec Guinness, one of the great British actors of the 20th Century along with his fellow knights Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson, was known for his ability to slip, chameleon-like, into his roles. His most mmemorable included DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, Obi-Wan Kenobi in STAR WARS, George Smiley in the television adaptation of John Le Carre's SMILEY'S PEOPLE and his Oscar-winning performance in BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI. Known, but not known, for despite being a familiar face throughout the world from his acting and memoirs, Guiness remained an enigmatic, complex man, careful throughout his life to show little of his true self. Until now. For the first time, Garry O'Connor is able to reveal the full story, including how Guinness was shaped by his illegitimacy, his strained relationship with is mother, and his search for certainties through the Roman Catholic Church. Backed by impeccable research, including interviews with Guinness himself, and containing startling new information about his childhood, his secret relationships and the fears that haunted him, the book is a portrait of the true, complicated man behind the idelible performances.

This book is long on (basically negative) innuendo and the author's unsubstantiated (and uninteresting) opinions; short on substance or meaningful insights. It rambles. The reader is also treated to plenty of low grade psychobabble. It's a posthumous hatchet-job with lots of typos. No wonder Sir Alec wouldn't have anything to do with the author when approached for an interview.

                                      Book Description

In 1904, having known each other for only three months, a young woman named Nora Barnacle and a not yet famous writer named James Joyce left Ireland together for Europe -- unwed. So began a deep and complex partnership, and eventually a marriage, which endured for thirty-seven years. This is the true story of Nora, the woman who, transformed by Joyce's imagination, became Molly Bloom, arguably the most famous female character in twentieth-century literature. It is also the story of Ireland, a social history encapsulated in the vivid recreation of Joyce and his small Irish entourage abroad. Ultimately it is the portrait of a relationship -- of Nora's complicated, committed, and at times shocking relationship with a hardworking, hard drinking genius and with his work. In NORA: THE REAL LIFE OF MOLLY BLOOM, the award-winning biographer Brenda Maddox has given us a powerful new lens through which to see both James Joyce and the woman who was in turn his inspiration and his salvation.

4 out of 5 stars The perfect companion.......2005-10-16

This is the perfect companion to Richard Ellmans bio of JJ. I first read it when it came out a few years ago and I found it to be a good "other side of the story". Much has been made of Joyce's letters to his wife and of her being the model for Molly Bloom. He must have been a happy man if that was the case. She was all woman.

5 out of 5 stars An insightful and compelling look into a life and a marriage.......2003-01-04

The story of Nora and James Joyce's unconventional relationship and how it shaped the writings of one of history's most controversial authors. This book is nothing short of riveting, both in terms of the story it is telling and the way it is told. It explores the influence Nora held over Joyce in his life and his writing and gives countless examples of how he used the experiences of those around him in his books. More than anything, this is the story of a woman struggling to hold her life and her family together in the face of hardship after hardship. A truly incredible read that I couldn't put down until the last page - I even read the bibliography!

I'm a life long Joyce fan and I have to admit that I enjoyed this life of Jim's wife (only she could call him Jim!) Nora even more than I did the three volume Ellman biography of Joyce himself. In fact, Joyce fans will probably learn more about Joyce's writing by reading about his wife than about him. This is one of the most outstanding biographies I have ever read -- it's fascinating to learn how Joyce used Nora's every utterance somewhere in his works even though she herself never read Ulysses.

                                      Book Description

James Joyce's Dublin Houses describes in detail the many houses in Dublin where the Joyce family lived. It reflects on the positive effect that the constant moving had on the young James Joyce, in providing him with an intimate knowledge of the city that was to become such an important backdrop to his work. It also provides detailed information for the reader on how to get to the various places. It concentrates on the houses where the Joyce family lived, also pinpointing the haunts of his characters, Leopold Bloom and Stephen Dedalus.

Vivien Igoe, an expert on Joyce, explains the background and origins of both Joyce and Nora Barnacle, who inspired the principal female character in Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. There is also information on where Joyce stayed on his return visits to Dublin in later life.

While the book will be of interest to Joycean pilgrims and students of Anglo-Irish literature alike, it is also aimed at the general reader to provide a useful interpretative aid to Dubliners and Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

                                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Where Joyce & Nora grew up, before exile.......2007-08-04

This handsome vademecum fits the hand, pleases the eye, and informs the mind of the Joycean pilgrim searching not along the streets for Stephen Dedalus, Leopold Bloom, the denizens of Nighttown or the cast from "Wandering Rocks"-- but their engenderer in his native habitat. This parallels not only the ubiquitous electronic and print guidebooks for walkers recreating Bloom's steps, but academic maps for the fictional counterpart, the topographical dictionary by Ian Gunn & Clive Hart, "James Joyce's Dublin," (Thames & Hudson, 2004). Igoe's title speaks for itself.

Igoe, a Joyce scholar and former curator at the Sandymount museum, gives requisite passages from Joyce's fiction, period and recent illustrations, and comprehensive but not mind-numbing biographical details that guide armchair visitors as well as direct real tourists. Neil Hyslop's handsome, readable, and hand-lettered maps recall the elegant ones that used to grace endpapers of historical hardcovers. They are easy to consult, spare enough not to be cluttered with extraneous information, and large enough to be accurate and not merely decorative.

A new version expanded to 208 pp. (shown here, Lilliput Pr.) appeared in June 2007 but I haven't seen it, nor is it listed for sale on Amazon US. I review the 1997 version; I judge that the basics in the older edition should remain the same. Perhaps URLs & updated transport data are added for the itinerary supplement that carefully leads you around by bus to Joyce's Dublin houses, each residence given a few pages per biographically organized chapter, and their environs.
