Customer Reviews:
Excellent !!!.......2005-09-21
I am from Brazil and this travel book has been an excellent help to my future travel (on January / 06). It has a lot of maps, good tips for all budgets, great itineraries and, the most important, is too organized.
Certainly, it is a very good purchase for all.
Informative Travel Guide.......2005-08-18
If you can only buy one travel guide and tangible information is what you are looking for your money will be well spent on Fodor's 05 New York City book. It clearly lays out Manhattan, as well as the different boroughs, and details what each has to offer. It is also filled with lots of maps. It describes and rates shops, restaurants, nighttime entertainment, performing arts, etc. for each area. This book was a great prep book to plan our trip and it was a great reference book while in New York. As a matter of fact, I carried only a few things in my backpack everyday. They included a subway map, camera, extra film, and this book.
Book Description
Since this classic work was originally published in 1984, there have been major shifts in the nonprofit world -- the growth of more profit-oriented ventures, the overhaul of accounting rules, new partnerships, and an emphasis on customer-oriented service and leadership. In easy-to-understand language, Thomas Wolf explains how to cope with these changes and deal with the traditional challenges of managing staff, trustees, and volunteers.
Customer Reviews:
The Go-To Guide.......2007-09-21
This book is used as a text in my Arts Administration class. Some of my classmates find the writing very dry but most of us agree that the straightforward and thorough advice given is this book is very useful. If only everyone involved in nonprofits could read this book, then we'd all be 'on the same page!' We all need to read it once and keep it on our shelves for reference!
Excellent for Beginners and Experienced Nonprofit Directors.......2007-02-23
As the Co-Founder of a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, I would recommend this book as a "must have" for all Board Members or for someone considering establishing a nonprofit organization. It is quite complete and also makes for a great primer about the structure of nonprofits.
Excellent book buying experience.......2006-03-27
Whether buying directly from Amazon, or from a reseller, my experiences are always fruitful and first rate. Keep up the good work!
This is an exceptional read.......2004-07-29
Thomas Wolf gives a clear and detailed view on the corners and tidbits behind starting a Non-Profit organization. I STRONGLY recommend this book before you even think of plunking down the money for your own nonprofit or file the 501 c(3). Too many mistakes can avoided by just reading the basic 101 in this book. Wolf uses a lot of examples to explain, but make sure you have a dictionary nearby. If you don't know the ins and outs of the IRS, etc., you need to start here. Good stuff that is too important to miss, or allow yourself to go bankrupt over.
A good introduction.......2003-09-26
I also use this book as a text for an undergraduate class in non-profit management. It is an excellent primer on the key issues in the field, particularly those areas that differ from the management of for-profit businesses. I use Drucker's "Managing the Non-Profit Organization" with this book to add a somewhat higher level overview of the strategic issues and principles in the nonprofit field.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful but lacking revelations.......2002-03-14
Prety much your typical how-to for dogs book. I expected to learn more but it's pretty much a beginner book with lots of harsh and critical "do you really deserve a shepherd?" righteous indignation. I guess they figure you'd really buy a book about shepherds if you didn't have one???
Anyway, it's helpful but certainly not required reading.
Nicely Done.......2000-04-04
This book is worth buying. It has many good tips and information of german shepherds. Lots of pictures of nice looking shepherds. Read it from cover to cover and use it as a reference.

One of my favorite books.......2007-07-03
John Fricke has written a celebration of Judy, with fun photos and inspirational montages of who Judy was, and how she changed with the years. Judy had an indomnitable spirit, it was her soul that was weighted down with bad karmic connections and stigmas she always fought to transcend. Some clues about this were the decision Judy's mother had to make about Judy's birth; and how the doctor intervened. So I think John Fricke captures this dynamic in this book, where is it possible to witness how a spirit survived in a material world.
Brilliant.......2006-08-17
This is a marvellous book, John Fricke writes of Judy Garland's career in great detail while also dispelling the old myths of tempermental and mean spirited behaviour that other Garland biographers presented as fact.
Here is Judy in all of her glory as the great entertainer she always was (and still is) and as mentioned earlier blows away the myths that have plagued Judy for so long, it shows Judy's effort to rise above problems and give her all, wether it is when she is performing or showing her love to her friends, co-workers and her children.
Buy this book now with another John Fricke title on Judy, 'A Portrait of art and Anecdote'. Forget people like Gerald Clarke and his innaccurate look at Judy's life and Mel Torme for his self-serving and also innaccurate look at the legend. Buy this book but quick.
THE BOOK HAS NO PEERS.......2003-04-09
I bought it during Christmas in 1992... And u know what; It`s the definitive book on Judy!!! It really is an open love-letter 2 the Great 1 From 1 Of Her Fans.... At times u might say that John Fricke is glorifying Judy - but I don`t mind... It`s the kind of book u would want if u were on a desert island(with the CD`s "Judy at Carnegie Hall", "The London Sessions" and the "25th Retrospective"(compiled by Fricke) and the films "The Wizard Of Oz", "Meet Me in St. Louis", "The Pirate", "Easter Parade", "In the Good Old Summertime", "Summer Stock", "A Star is Born"(just 4 the musical scenes) and "I Could Go On Singing" - her BEST dramatic performance!! And The DVD collection of her 1963-64 TV-series...
Come 2 think of it... With THIS book and her music and films... I THINK I wouldn`t have noticed the palms, animals and ocean surrounding me on that island hehehehe
One of the all-time great books about the magnificent JUDY!.......2002-10-23
Along with Gerold Frank's 1975 biography "JUDY", John Fricke's book THE WORLD'S GREATEST ENTERTAINER is the definitive book about the sensational talent and fascinating life of the legendary lady. Fricke has done the research that no one before him could do to really give a broad insight into the career that has made Garland an icon. Beautifully written and handsomely illustrated, this is a book for the ages, and a must-have for any Garland fan. Anyone who doesn't love this book clearly hasn't a clue what great books are all about.
Judy: The World's Greatest Entertainer!.......2001-10-14
This book is simply marvelous! This book has hundreds and hundreds of crisp, clear pictures of Judy, many not previously published!
This book covers Judy's entire carear, from her first performace at age two until her death on June 22, 1969! This book is packed full of both black and white and color pictures!
All of her movies are covered in this book, as well as her hundreds of concerts particually the landmark concert on April 23, 1961 at Carnigie Hall! Also covered is her 1963- 1964 television show on CBS: The Judy Garland Show!
If your looking for information on Judy's career, this definatly is the right book for you! Or if your looking for lots and lots of pictures of Miss Garland and all her movies, this is still the right book for you!
If you just love Judy in any way at all, and want more information on her life, this is the book to buy!

A Thinking Person's Guide to Media Influence.......2003-06-04
After reading the other reviews I must add a few comments.
First, you can't blame the author for lack of clarity. If you blame anyone, blame the translator. This book is translated from French and most translations are cumbersome.
Second, Jacques Ellul is a Luddite (read his "The Technological Society" and you'll see what I mean) so his conclusions are going to be anti-techonology.
Having said all that, this book challenges the assumptions of our image-driven society whether you agree with the author's conclusions or not. Jacques Ellul is a Christian but missed one important point on the image vs. word debate. And that is this: "The Word became flesh..." The Word by divine mandate became an image of God in the flesh. Also, man is made in the image of God. But Jacques Ellul is a great thinker and always provokes thought outside the traditional box.
This is a great book and deserves reading and re-reading for any writer in our image-driven society.
Aloha, Glenn
Hard to Follow.......2001-07-04
The review by Sharilee is a good summary, but I found Ellul's actual presentation to be extremely wordy and obscure. There is much to be said on this topic, but I don't think he said it at all clearly or well. My advice is to browse this book in a library before investing in your own copy.
Brilliant.......1999-10-10
In this book, Ellul makes a strong distinction between the "word" and the "image" as a method of perceiving and making sense of the world. He claims that the "image" has been elevated in our society beyond its original purpose and capability. The "image" is limited to the material world, to the practical and cannot probe the depths of human experience, to go beyond the surface of reality. Therefore a society based on image will be a shallow society, incapable of find ing deep truths.
He contrasts the limitations of the image with the strengths of the "word." The word, which has been humiliated in today's world, that is, lowered in status, demeaned, is capable of conveying truth and complexities that the image cannot. The word, because it is flexible and open to interpretation, is an instrument of communication and negotiation.
Ellul takes this argument and applies it to several different areas of technology and communication.
I agree wholeheartedly with his basic premise, although not with all of his applications. Sometimes his categorizations are a little unclear and confusing but overall he makes a very strong argument. He is absolutely brilliant in the way that he is able to analyze the very fundamental structure of the way we communicate and function as a society. He attacks the postmodern mindset by showing that they have a disdain for thinking and the intellect itself.
Book Description
The ancient African art of sweetgrass basket making has been practiced for more than 300 years in the Christ Church Parish of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Seen on the roadways of Charleston County and in museums and galleries worldwide, these unique handmade baskets are crafted from sweetgrass, bullrush, pine needles, and palm leaves. Traditionally, artisans use a piece of the rib bone of a cow and a pair of scissors as their only tools for construction. When English settlers founded Christ Church Parish in the late 1600s, they saw a place rich in natural beauty and ideal for harvesting rice, cotton, and indigo. Skilled agricultural laborers were needed, and consequently, South Carolina became the top importer of enslaved West Africans. Finding a landscape similar to their homeland, those who came kept many of their traditional practices. Today, the richness of the West African presence can be seen in Charleston's architecture, basketry, and ironworks.
Customer Reviews:
a bargain.......2007-08-13
"Sweetgrass Baskets and the Gullah Tradition" may suffer from being misnamed (a faulty title) because it is much more of a sociological and anthropological investigation of Gullah culture than a close study of sweetgrass basketry itself. For that reason though I consider it a bargain. Anyone who visits the Charleston area and Mt. Pleasant (Rt. 17 or the Charleston Market) in particular will be pulled into the beauty of the sweetgrass baskets. This book takes you into the complex lives lead by those creating the baskets and those around them living in Mt. Pleasant in a particular time of the past, giving a well-rounded view of a disappearing culture. Still, you see the people through the eyes of one of their own, not romanticized but as real flesh and blood people. I really appreciate what Joyce Coakley shared in these pages and I think you will too.
Great Pictorial Essay.......2007-08-09
I really appreciate Joyce Coakley's very personal photo essay book on Gullah culture. Many authors of books like this just go to resource centers like historical libraries for photographs but you can tell by the names that many of these people are her own family members and people from her neighborhood. "Sweetgrass Baskets and the Gullah Tradition," goes right into the heart of a particular neighborhood where sweetgrass baskets flourish but also shows so many other facets of the Gullah culture you won't find anywhere else. Well done Ms. Coakley!! I highly recommend this book for those not only interested in sweetgrass basket history but those seeking a more indepth visual analysis of Gullah people.
a nice book.......2007-01-04
This book was interesting, but not quite as interesting as I hoped. The writing could have had a little more flair. I am interested in Gullah culture, but it was only so so in promoting ongoing interest. Pictures would be better. Good resource though for information.

Book Description
Eleanor Roosevelt's character was shaped by the history and culture of the Hudson Valley. More than that, Eleanor Roosevelt loved the Hudson Valley. A woman who knew and cared for the whole world chose this place, Val-Kill, as her home in a cottage by a stream. Eleanor Roosevelt: A Hudson Valley Remembrance reflects her unaffected simplicity and caring interest in her neighbors' concerns. Remembered by friends, colleagues, neighbors, and young people, these qualities inspired a community-based group to lead efforts to save her home in 1977 as the country's first national historic site dedicated to a First Lady. The Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill continues her work on issues that affect life today.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring.......2007-05-12
This is a wonderful book. I have always admired Eleanor Roosevelt and enjoyed learning of her origins in the Hudson Valley and to understand how deep her roots in the area were.
Customer Reviews:
Positively Po-Town!.......2000-04-29
I thoroughly enjoyed Poughkeepsie, NY: Halfway up the Hudson! Despite little detail about the last 40 years, it is an impressive pictoral history of an oft-maligned city. Existing in the shadows of New York City and Albany, Po-Town has earned its share of now documented historical importance; and this book.
Book Description
Fourteen provocative essays challenge traditional notions of Jewish female identity presented in mass media images, films, narrative, and stories by portraying the American Jewish woman not only as subject but as shaper of American popular culture.
Sometimes internalizing negative presentations but more often "talking back" to them, Jewish women created alternative images that became tools of rebellion, subverting and dismantling such stereotypes as the "Yiddishe Mama," the Jewish Mother, and the Jewish American Princess. Over the course of the century -- and particularly as a consequence of feminism -- Jewish female novelists, screenwriters, dramatists, entertainers, and grass-roots feminists were able to create new possibilities for the expression of Jewish women's voices.
Customer Reviews:
A Nice Look Back...but Incomplete.......2006-05-23
As a former resident of Poughkeepsie, NY, I was looking foward to this publication. The quality of the book itself and it's printing are all very high grade. Nice smooth cover and the archival photos are great.
The information inside is complete and well-documented. However, it only details the first 50 years of the 20th Century. If someone grew up there during the 1930s - 50s, it will bring back a lot of memories. However, if you lived there from the 1960s onward, I felt it left a lot out. Yes, it shows a couple photos of the renovation of downtown and road expansion during that period, but thats about it. I remember Poughkeepsie during the 1960s and how vibrant it was and all the change it went thru as the area struggled with urbanization. But there are so few crumbs of information and few photographs of the era.
So if you came from that area before the 1960s, you'll enjoy looking back. If you lived there later, let your mind remember the days.
Super.......2004-04-15
I always loved listening to my grandparents tell me what it was like growing up in Po-Town. Now I can see what OLD Po-town looked liked. My kids look at it and love seeing how life was back then.
