Fun Trivia & Factoids.......2006-02-06

I bought this book at Rockefeller Plaza on my very first visit to New York City. It was an impulse buy, but one that has proved to be worthwhile. This is one of the few books I do not loan to any of my travel-loving friends.

The contents of the book stem from a column about curious New York places, things, or elements. The questions and answers must have been sifted through since the ones published in this piece are compelling and not obvious.

If you are visiting New York for the first time or even if you live there 24/7, this book can provide a new perspective of the Big Apple. It is a cute gift idea for someone relocating to the area or who has a deep affection for the city.

I wish it had been updated with post-911 information, since the city has changed considerably since this book was first published.

Among my favorite books are Cecil Adams's pointed and funny "Straight Dope" series, in which, with wit and candor, he answers any stupid question a reader cares to pose him. Go ahead! Bite the Big Apple!.......1999-06-25

This book is a must-read for any self-respecting resident of the Big Apple. The only thing more fascinating than the answers are the questions themselves, things that may have briefly passed through the transem of your subsconscious and quickly forgotten about. Why, for example, does every building in NYC seem to have one of those wooden water towers on top? Why is West 4th Street actually on the East side? Who is Major Deegan, and if he was a good enough military leader to get his own highway, why have I never read about him in the history books? Read "The Curious New Yorker" and you will be able to answer these and hundreds of other questions - and achieve A-list status on the Gotham party circuit as a result. That's because there is no more fascinating topic of discussion in New York than the City itself. Instead of giving everyone a copy of the Yellow Pages when you move into an apartment, your superintendent should give you this book. You'll get a lot more out of it.

Not totally inaccurate.......2006-02-22

The Great Mutual Fund Trap is primarily a compilation of complaints about mutual funds and conveyed little new or useful information. To a great extent the information could have been consolitated in about a dozen pages, but then it could not have been sold as a book.
Someone with no financial investing experience could learn about the problems with mutual funds from the book. But I would not recommend it.

Pulled Together the Missing Investment Pieces.......2006-01-19

I feel this book is a must read for any individual investor who wants long term success. For 10 years I have been trying to become a confident, knowledgable investor. I read the books and magazines, the Financial Times, I roam MSN Money, I listen to radio shows etc. I have experimented and learned a great deal, done some things well and made many mistakes always feeling that most of the time my results--both gains and loses--seem random. I also have an actively managed account that seems to get the same random results I get but for much more expense. Upon reading this book all my experiences came together in a clear understanding that the market is indeed random and how I can best participate in it. Baer and Gensler not only affirm what I had learned here and there from others but many new things as well. They do so with excellent substantiation in a readable, straightforward manner that gave me the confidence I was looking for to make dramatic changes in my financial holdings. They gave me simple, excellent recommendations to execute my plan and navigate past the the traps laid out by investment companies. I agree with one reviewer that I too was amazed at how much I did not know. Filling in those gaps so I can now make informed choices was certainly worth the small investment in buyng this book.

Social Security Reform Anyone?.......2005-07-19

In the spirit of Burton Malkiel's A Random Walk Down Wall Street, The Great Mutual Fund Trap proposes that the most viable strategic alternative for investors is passive investing, also known as indexing.

The authors point out that a variety of hurdles to outperformance of the averages are strewn in the investor's path, including overconfidence in security selection and market timing skills, a blizzard of commercial mis-information and questionable third party investment resources, among various others.

Along the way to the book's conclusion attention is drawn to the ongoing social security debate and it is strongly suggested that passively managed mutual funds play an important role in addressing the problem.

Finally, the authors indicate that sometimes the best performers in a game are those that are able to successfully make the largest number of effective small decisions. A list of factors investors may want to consider in the implementation of their investment plans is introduced.

While the authors delivered some interesting points, quite a bit of the information was already available. [As indicated by at least one of the previous reviewers.] As such: 4/5 stars.

Good job revealing internals of mutual funds industry.......2004-04-12

It's a very well written book. The main purpose of this book is to show that mutual funds industry overall does not provide a good choices for regular individual investors and the book covers this topics exceptionally. It really reveals the real intentions of the industry and shows that this is the only way this indstry can work. The book advocates passive investment and especially index funds and exchange traded funds (ETF). While there were already quite a few good, if controversial, books about efficient market theory ('You can't beat the market'), such as famous 'Random walk On Wall Street', this book brings more details about today market environment and explains what choices passive investor has. My only complain is that sometimes I feel some kind of zealotry in authors considerations. Even for somebody that believes in efficient market theory some of the statements in this books could seem very questionable. Stock mutual funds takes majority of books space but the moment authors venture to the other territory (and they do try to cover practically all kinds of investments) their arguments often seem too absolute. Still, this is the book every investor in mutual funds must read (and it will probably convince you to make some changes in your investment strategy - it did this for me)

Not bad but nothing special.......2003-09-08

There is really nothing new in this book that has not been beat to death elsewhere and the reader will probably find William Bernstein's books more rewarding. For those who buy this book however you will not go too far wrong.

The Definitive Volume on the Subject!.......1999-01-16

I've studied these vehicles for years and thought I knew a lot about them. But Dale Reed was there and does a masterful job of melding the history time line with the results of the program. There are probably only a handful of people who could have written this book which is as rich in detail and "colorful" stories as any reader could want. If you've read the story of the X-15, this is the next logical step. If you haven't, you need to to really grasp what was going on at Edwards during this time. Fascinating!

The definitive history of NASA lifting bodies to date........1998-11-13

A well written book from the engineer that was at the center of this small group of specialized aerospace vehicles. While detailed and somewhat technical, the author still manages to convey the sense of personal excitement, accomplishment and, at times, frustration experienced by everyone supporting these vehicles. A must-read for anyone interested in these vehicles.

I had read Miss Bacall's previous book, so thought to myself,for the price that Amazon was selling it at, so be it. I'm buying! What else could this great legend say however? A lot. The book was filled with many more personal stories and interests than I suspected it could be. It is an excllent book on one of the last of the great legends in Hollywood. I loved the book. Got her to sign it too, she was most gracious.

Bacall, Bogart, Broadway-- A Page Turner.......2007-01-12

Follow Betty Bacal, the shy daughter of a Rumaniam immigrant, as she becomes stage struck, trains as a actress, has an overnight success modeling for Vogue, and is transformed by director Howard Hawkes into Lauren Bacall, the newcomer who sweeps Humphrey Bogart off his feet.

Bacall's tale is irresistible, and she tells it well. The story of her transformation at Howard Hawks's hands into the Slim of "To Have and Have Not" is all the more delicious because Bacall remains, while the cameras are not running, an inexperienced teen who misses her mother and her family in New York. Bacall's off-screen innocence contrasts strikingly and delightfully with her knowing on-screen persona.

Bacall's account of her romance and marriage to Humphrey Bogart is graceful and moving. Bacall quotes Bogart's letters to her during their courtship: these reveal his stunned incredulity at finally finding love after a lifetime of romantic failures. Their marriage is a sweet reward to Bogart after years of domestic strife, and his gratitude at finding happiness and fatherhood in midlife is tremendously affecting. Bogart's gallantry and courage in his final illness reduced me to tears, as did Bacall's despair at losing the love of her life.

By her own account, Bacall's second marriage to Jason Robards was not a success. She cares for her children (two by Bogart and one by Robards), but they do not appear central to her life. The great loves dominating Bacall's post-Bogart years remain her mother and the acting profession. Bacall's dedication to her craft is evident, both on stage and on screen, and she remains ever grateful for a good role-- a gratitude that grows more poignent as she ages.

Any weaknesses? A few. Then Some, penned 27 years after By Myself, doesn't live up to the magic of the first installment, although one must admire Bacall's spirit in producing it. And Bacall's rather cursory depiction of her children leaves the reader wondering about the status of her relationships with them. But these criticisms are minor ones when measured against the charm and drama of Bacall's story.

Lauren Bacall is now in her 80s. Her memoirs span over 60 years of cinema and stage history. Her story is well worth reading for those who appreciate American theater and film. Highly recommended, especially for those interested in the private side of the Bacall-Bogart saga.

Understand the ratings before deciding on purchase..........2007-01-02

I am someone who did not read the first book. As such, this was all new to me. I can honestly say that the beginning of this book was the BEST autobiography I have ever read. Never, have I gained such insight into the things I longed to know about a "star" and their associates.

When Lauren Bacall describes her growing up in New York I can see and feel all of those locations. I picture her handing out programs in the theater. I am in the room with her, and nervous, when she is meeting Bette Davis. I fall in love with Humphrey Bogart, just based on her descriptions of the early romance. She truly taps into my first love. As such, my spirit is crushed with her during his last days. I feel her upset, joy and bravery all through the book. This is outstanding, personal, and descriptive writing.

I do agree that the last chapters of the book bring the book to a terrible halt. Still, this book is unfairly rated by those who read the earlier book without the stale ending. 75% of this book is still the earlier book-- the 5 star book. The ridiculously low ratings are especically unfair, when most are based on the Bacall's statements about our current president and have nothing at all to do with her book!

I am giving 4 stars, and recommending the earlier (5 star) book simply because the ending of this one reads like an endless obituary. I will pass this one on and pick up the first one as I know I will want to read it again. It is wonderful!

In fact, I dare you to try and read it without revisiting a Lauren Bacall/Humphrey Bogart movie and feeling like you are there.

Great book - but with some reservations..........2006-10-04

As others have mentioned, the "By myself" portion of this book was excellent. What a fascinating life, from her upbringing in New York City to her discovery and preparation for stardom by Howard Hawks, to life with Bogie and the years of work after his passing. She was very honest about herself, her frailties and insecurities. She's also very honest about the quality of some of the roles she has taken, which I appreciate. I must also note that she must have dug very deep to recount the last year, and particulary the last few months, of Bogie's life. This intimate account is crushing - it broke my heart.

And like others, I was less impressed with "And then some". The sense that I got was that she was not necessarily name-dropping, but trying to impress upon the reader the importance of her friends in her life, and the void their passing has left. And as a mild liberal I may agree with some of her political viewpoints but would never consider hoisting my beliefs on others. I do not think that in she was skillful in conveying her point in this portion of the book.

Nonetheless, I am glad I read the book. I might have missed it altogether had the newer edition not come out. What a life!

Lauren Bacall: By Myself.......2006-07-27

I enjoyed Lauren Bacall's autobiography better than any autobiography I've ever read. Her style of writing is so personal, it's just a pleasure to read. It's written with heart, it's witty, poignant, and so honest. You'll also learn about the original "Rat Pack", and other celebrities. I can't say enough about this book!

Bacall holds nothing back here........2006-01-09

I read this book 20 years ago when it first came out and I couldn't put it down. The love story between her and Bogey was sweet, but tragic. His death was so detailed in this book that when my own father was dying I couldn't help but relate back to her description of Bogey's final hours. It made me sob for her. The mention of Hollywood in the 50's and all of the corrupt politicians trying to blackball performers is deplorable. I believe Ms. Bacall is our current Kate Hepburn - a no BS kind of Hollywood woman that is still well-respected and greatly admired.

Triumph and Tragedy.. A Life revealed........2005-11-21

I have never considered myself a Lauren Bacall fan but having recently rewatched To Have And Have Not, her film debut, I became intrigued about her and Bogart so I picked up this book after reading such positive reviews here at Amazon.

Well, was I surprised. First this is a very well written autobiography that demonstrates a keen intelligence and a reflectiveness on the past that is truly admirable. It is also incredibly honest and not just a recitation of a Hollywood star's accomplishments.

From Bacall's youth in New York where she tried desperately to find a place in the theater to her ultimate return to the stage as a star after spending years in California as Mrs. Bogart and raising a family, every stage of her life is well examined.

Bogart emerges as a truly good guy, not perfect but clearly they were a great match despite the obvious age difference.

Some of the episodes in her life with Bogart have the added quality of capturing a period in Hollywood and the film industry that is long gone. Bacall isn't and doesn't need to be a name dropper but so many famous characters pop in and out of her story that it is a virtual who's who of 1940's Hollywood.

What I initally picked up as a casual read turned into something much deeper. Lauren Bacall , who I knew little about before reading this is a woman who I came to really like as a result of this book.

Well written and well worth checking out for filmfans, fans of Bogart or anyone interested in acting and theater and the celebrity life of the 40's and 50's.

The title of this book seems somewhat ironic as Lauren Bacall's life has been largely defined by her relationships with others, particularly the men in her life. The first man to influence her was her father, who deserted her and her mother early in her life. The role of father then fell to her beloved Uncle Charlie who was always nearby and was supportive of Bacall's efforts in life. She dreamed early on of becoming an actress, but her chances of succeeding seemed rather remote. After a few false starts in modeling and acting, she struck it big and became an overnight star at a very young age. From then on she had many love affairs with men she admired, but none so important as her relationship with Humphrey Bogart. Their 12 year marriage was filled with mutual admiration and love, which she never seemed to recapture after Bogie's death. This is a fascinating story of a fascinating woman who has had to deal with her insecurities and the tug of work vs. family responsibilities in order to emerge as one of the premier actresses of our time.
