5 out of 5 stars A Daybook for Naturalists.......2000-06-30

This journal of daily nature references is a delightful book for anyone interested in the out-of-doors. Takes just a minute to skim the journal entry for the day (365 days recorded!). Pertinent to the Northeast latitudes, the entries include brief facts about insects, trees, wildflowers, frogs, etc. -- everything relevant to the date one might encounter it in nature. Easy to understand why the author achieved Minnesota Science Teacher of the Year!

5 out of 5 stars How to be the best in Real Estate.......2007-07-26

Gary Keller tells it like it should be. If you have a true servant's heart and want to help people with the skill and knowledge you have as a Realtor, this is the book to read. He gives a number of techniques but ultimately, he makes it clear that you need to want to do what is best for your client - not your pocket. Excellent book, I recommend this to every new agent I work with. Need a plan to get started right, Gary is the man with the plan!

4 out of 5 stars A Primer on doing business.......2007-07-14

There are many books available that address sales and marketing for the real estate agent but very few provide solid advice on how to run a real estate business. This easy to follow book provides information that, if applied will set any agent apart from his peers.

5 out of 5 stars A must read! Changed my career!.......2007-06-27

After the first 6 months in business (I've just finished my 3rd year), I decided to buy a number of Real Estate instructional books on how to sell Real Estate. I had a feeling this would be the best. I saved it for last. I read 4 other books over the holidays (about a 4 week period). The other books were good, but redundant and nothing that changed me. I started to read this book and immedietely knew that this book was different. It gave specific direction on what has worked for successful people. Not just successful people here and there, but the book took a scientific approach to identify common practices among groups of successful Realtors.

The result? I can't say that I do everything that the book says to do. I should! But, I have taken parts of the books and implemented those practices. The year after reading this book I made the top 20% in the market. The following year I made the top 15%. And this year is off the charts. I'm not sure where I will end up, but top 10 or better.

There is no substitute for hard work, but I would rather work hard the right way. Best of luck!

4 out of 5 stars You've Got To Be Open To A Unique Perspective.......2007-06-23

This is the best book on the market on how to organize and run a real estate agent business. Its principles are applicable whether you are a brand new agent, or have years of experience. That said, if you are looking for a book to explain listings per se, or working with buyers per se, then this might not be the right book for you -- this book looks at being an agent from a much broader (and more important in my opinion) perspective than that. If you are smart (if you "get it") then you will realize that the things taught in this book are far more important to your ultimate success than any book you might read on how to take a listing. Buy this book, read it ten times, and when you think you understand it read it ten more times! Its message is that important! Few understand this.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I should say that I am an attorney, real estate broker, investor, trainer, and am affiliated with a Keller Williams office in Chicago. That said, rest assured that my affiliation with Keller Williams does not affect my integrity with respect to my review of this book -- honestly, it is a good book that you should read. For what it's worth, I am the author of another real estate related book that can also be found here on Amazon -- The WealthLoop Series Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Buying Houses: The Foolproof Roadmap to Real Estate Riches Without the Risks and Hassles of Landlording. It's part of the "WealthLoop Series" and unlike many real estate books, it is an actual "how to" book as opposed to a "rah-rah" book and comes complete with forms, checklists, leases -- everything the beginning investor needs to get started. Agents from across the country have been telling me that my book finally taught them the right way to work with residential investors.

I would suggest that you buy both mine and Gary Keller's books.

                          1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2007-06-19

I am a rookie agent and found the material worthless, a complete waste of money and time. There is no real technique here. The book so repetitive its agonizing. The worst part is it really has nothing to do with real estate, I learned NOTHING about the real estate business reading this book. You could re title the book an infinite number of times and have the same content "The Millionaire Day Care Worker" for example. There is as much information about running a day care as there is real estate. Steer clear.

5 out of 5 stars Very Important Information -- A Must Buy If You're An Agent Serious About Success.......2007-10-20

While I don't "know" Mr. Minton, I have spoken with him about his investing programs and I'm convinced that he's the "real deal". True, his first book was essentially a sales pitch, but this book is different in that the "pitch" is more subtle, and there is plenty of great information that stands on its own merit. In my opinion, this is one of the most practical, insightful, and honest books on what it takes to be a successful real estate agent/broker that I've ever read.

Minton explains the need for systems. He explains the need for "niching." He offers extremely practical advice on such topics as hiring assistants, training, and effective time management. If you take his words to heart, and really ponder the implications of his way of practicing real estate, you MUST come away from your read with an instinctive sense that Mr. Minton has precisely "hit the nail on the head" with respect to what it takes to create and maintain an ongoing and successful real estate practice. That said, this is not a book about "magic telephone scripts" or specific listing presentations -- it's about the entrepreneurial mindset as applied to the real estate business.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I should say that I am an attorney, real estate broker, investor, trainer, and author of another book that can be found here on Amazon -- The WealthLoop Series Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Buying Houses: The Foolproof Roadmap to Real Estate Riches Without the Risks and Hassles of Landlording The book is about using rent-to-own strategies to lock in high returns and reduce risk. These are the EXACT SAME techniques that Minton uses to sell almost 300 investor properties a year in his own business. It has received rave reviews from both agents and investors from across the country, and I think that it makes for an excellent companion book to Minton's. I recommend that you buy them both if you're serious about getting the complete picture on how to explode your agent business.

Because I've read dozens of dog books by now, I'm pretty fussy about them. I want them to have fresh new insights to solving problems I've found unsolvable. For that, this is not a suitable book.

On the other hand, it is an EXCELLENT starter book, written in a simple and very readable style. This is the book I would choose to give a teenager who is starting out with a new dog. The questions are posed from the canine point of view with charming results. Here's one of my favorites:

"I enjoyed watching television when I lived in Europe, but now that I have moved to America, all I see is a blur. What has happened to my eyes?"

Fogle goes on to explain that European television transmission is higher speed than in the US. American transmission is slow enough that all dogs see is dots. This will be cured when high-definition TV becomes more popular in the US. (Learn something new every day....)

3 out of 5 stars A Great Little Book, If You Want An HP Collectibles Summary.......2003-06-08

The amount and variety of Harry Potter merchandise never ceases to amaze me. Rather than collect much of it, just buy this book. The pictures are detailed and printed on high-quality paper. Want to see what some foreign editions look like? It's in here. Want to find out some basic info about J.K. Rowling? It's in here, too.

Sure it resembles a catalog, but what book of collectibles doesn't? Its biggest flaw is being out of date, thereby leaving out quite of bit of recent merchandise, but it's a good start. The focus is on items based on the books, not the movies, which is okay by me. I'm late to HP fandom, so I get to see what I missed out on.

I also had the advantage of seeing this book in a store, so I knew what I was getting. It would be nice if there were an updated second edition, as this one only scratches the surface of HP collecting.

The book definitely has an entertaining value, but as far as a book for collectors, it isn't up to par. Most of the sections on Harry Potter collectables are not up to date, and they feature very vague values or prices. I think the reason is that Harry Potter merchandise is fairly new, and so it is hard to calculate an item's worth when it just came on to the market.

The book also includes several interesting sections on the upcoming movie, JK Rowling, and England, which are mildly entertaining. The thing that I thought was the most appealing in the book, however, was a section on Harry Potter around the world. I found it very interesting to see the covers of the Harry Potter books in Germany, France, Japan, and many other countries. Out of everything, I would say that that section helps redeem this book, which is otherwise a failure.

this "book" is the worst book i have ever read. the reason is because the "author" is putting 101 advertizements for harry potter mechandise. i reapeat myself, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!

My previous review of this product was removed by Amazon after receiving 54 of 58 "helpful" votes, with the remark by the editor to me that "It is not clear from reading the review that you have read the book you commented on." I don't see how so many of Amazon's potential customers could disagree, and I assure you all that I have indeed read this "book" and that my comments below are thus informed.

To even consider that this is a "book" is misleading. It is much more of a magazine format, and although it does contain some articles, they are obviously filler for what is otherwise an advertisement for Harry Potter merchandise, of which this book is one. The articles contain nothing that is not readily available elsewhere--much of it available on the net for free. This book seeks not to inform or entertain, but to part you from your hard-earned dollars with the least amount of effort on the publishers. If the "book" were half the price or less it might be a reasonable value. But since the Collector's Value Guide is as expensive as it is, beware of the information included--obviously the "authors" have no true sense of worth.

Were this truly a Collector's Value Guide, there would be some discussion of value, and what value might actually mean when the market is flooded with cheap garbage like pieces of colored plastic that are supposed to be "magical stones" whose real purpose is to enrich their makers, not entertain children. But of course, no such discussion exists. Granted, not every Potter "collectable" is a monstrosity, but how terribly unfortunate that the real value of Harry Potter, the delight of a child, has been eclipsed by the soulless and almightly dollar. The Harry Potter phenomenon is amazing, and I'm delighted to see so many kids interested in reading, and engaged in the worlds of fantasy and imagination, but this "book" is not about that at all. Instead, the "writers" of this "book" have managed to make a "collectable" from a "book" about "collectables." Clearly the world is not the way I'd have it...

I liked the books that CheckerBee Publishing have done in the past like beanie babies, but this book did not have the information I expected. I would not waste my money on this, unless you want to keep track of everything you have bought, but it is not even current....

Ever since his days as "Mork" on Mork and Mindy, Robin Williams has captivated the hearts and funny bones of audiences everywhere. No one will forget his performances in such classics as Good Morning Vietnam, Awakenings, and Dead Poets Society, or his hilarious roles as the nanny in Mrs. Doubtfire and as the zany doctor in Patch Adams.

The Life and Humor of Robin Williams offers his millions of fans a lively, thorough account of Robin Williams's life and career. Chronicling the early years, from his supportive Chicago childhood to his first college improv class, the book goes on to describe the actor's rapid descent into Hollywood's fast lane. But Williams cleaned up his life and made a breakthrough into serious acting with his extraordinary performance in The World According to Garp and the steady climb ever since to his more recent, Oscar-winning triumph in Good Will Hunting.

For the countless fans of Robin Williams, this biography is a fascinating and comprehensive look at the star's inspiring history.

3 out of 5 stars Biography misses the Mork........2007-08-16

A 2007 summer reading list mini review.

I have been an ardent fan of the humor of Robin Williams equal parts manic and cerebral since his debut on Happy Days some 30 years ago. So, when I saw this book at my local library, I checked it out thinking that I would be treated to some of his crazier routines like this one from Mork and Mindy:

Mork: (reporting to Orson) They even have a religion that worships O.J. Simpson.
                              Orson: The Juice?
Mork: Yeah, and the gentiles too.

What I got instead was a biography that after a good glimpse of his childhood years focused too much on the obvious and also on unneeded periphery from his work.

Examples of this are an approximately two page plot synopsis of Mrs. Doubtfire, and a penchant from listing at least 3 other films for each director Williams ever worked with. Aside from unnecessary, some of the periphery is also inaccurate. When speaking of the immense popularity of Happy Days the author tells us that Laverne and Shirley ran for 4 seasons, it ran for 8.

I will have to give the author, Jay David, some credit. It takes a certain kind of talent to write about such a colorful figure as Williams and make it come out dry.

                              4 out of 5 stars A Very Vanilla Biography.......2004-03-14

It is difficult to write a biography that only goes for 200 pages unless it is the Reader's Digest version of the person's life. Jay David essentially has written a stripped down biography of Robin Williams. After reading the book, I feel I have only scratched the surface of this talented actor/comedian's life and talents.

Much of Robin's early life is cited from previous interviews with other sources. While this is acceptable, it makes the early part of the book seem like a "cut and paste" job. The book journeys into his early career and family life with similar techniques. When the book arrives at the point where Robin Williams' career really takes off, the author becomes consistent with the layout of the chapters. The first part is how Williams came to work on the movie/project with various antidotes. The second part of the chapters is a documentation of the critical reviews of the movie. I felt a lot was omitted from the book. Nothing is mentioned about his hosting Saturday Night Live. Similary, little is mentioned of his stand-up work or Comic Relief. I would have thought they would have included more of Robin Williams' humor in here since the book is called "The Life and Humor of Robin Williams".

The book does have strong points. I did learn about Williams family and marital life. Few people are aware that Williams came from a privilaged family background. I also believe that the insight provided on many of the movies is well documented. One must keep in mind that the book was printed in 1999 so it is not entirely up to date. With this being said, fans of Williams will enjoy learning about the development of his career. Despite being an easy read, the book has too many weak points to be enjoyed by the casual reader.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Scholar's Work.......2003-06-05

This biography is written in an economical and polished prose. The skill of which is emphasized by meticulous editing and organization. The end result is a subtle, compassionate yet realistic examination of his life. The book is not written for his cult following or for ideological affirmation.

It presents a thorough account of Tone's life. The account examines his actions and decisions not only in the context of his personal traits and character but expands the analysis to reflect the effects on Tone of the political turbulence of 18th century Ireland and the impact of the French Revolution.

One of the strongest attractions of Tone's story is the contrast between his social status at the beginning of his adult life with his status when he died.

Tone was a graduate of Trinity College and studied law at the Middle Temple in London for two years. He then became a barrister in Dublin. His personal history reveals that he is a member of Dublin's social and political elite. Arguably he was a member of the Protestant Ascendancy. The author points out that Tone always retained a very Protestant and elitist perception of the Irish Masses thinking them to be vulgar and prone to deceit. This was tempered by a sincere compassion for the poor and a strong sense of honor.Tone believed that many problems in Ireland were caused by the religious divisions of his countrymen. These divisions in his estimation perpetuated British rule and stagnated Ireland's development.

From this beginning he became a formidable pamphleteer, reformer and advocate for Cathoilic rights, and ultimately an armed revolutionary opponent of English rule in Ireland. This zeal led him into military service as an officer in the French Army with a command in an aborted armed invasion to liberate Ireland.

The author presents several insights into Tone's complex and unique character. She notes that Tone was restless and single-minded, yet argues that this quality of single-mindedness could just as easily have propelled him in one direction as another.

Tone is described by acquaintances, friends, and even enemies as personable and charming. This is reflected in the statement of Captain Elias Thackeray of the Cambridgeshire Militia. Thackeray had the duty to escort Tone from prison in Derry to his trial in Dublin. He recalled Tone as '... the most delightful companion he ever traveled with.'

The value of Elliot's account of events is enhanced by her use of contemporaneous letters written by those most closely involved in the events. The Author's study is perhaps more detailed, erudite and insightful than is generally demanded. She notes that every political grouping accepts Tone's reputation as the 'father' of Irish republican nationalism but each takes from his tradition only what is needed to sustain its own stance.

Finally, this biography provides knowledge about Tone's life but it also does more. It provides a firm basis for continued research about Tone and 18th century Ireland. It is well worth the reader's time and effort.
