Description:
Azospirillum brasilense strains benefit field crops by excreting plant growth factors, promoting root proliferation and enhancing water uptake. FlcA protein is a transcriptional response regulator of the LuxR-UhpA family, which controls flocculation of A. brasilense cells in solution and plant root surface colonisation by A. brasilense. The expression of the flcA gene, studied here using a lacZ fusion controlled by the flcA promoter, was found to be partially constitutive in rich media. However, it could be further induced 3-4 fold by high ratios of C to N in the surrounding medium when transferred to minimal medium supplemented with fructose. Such conditions also induced flocculation by wild-type strains of A. brasilense in liquid media. Relatively high expressions of flcA were detected in root-associated cells, suggesting a positive effect of plant exudates on flcA expression. Although flocculation conditions increased the expression of flcA in wild-type A. brasilense strain Sp7 during the first 4-5 h of growth, the expression was reduced to low levels with the initiation of flocculation. Moreover, flcA expression in wild-type strain producing FlcA, was found to be significantly lower (3.5-5.5 fold in rich medium and 3-4 fold in flocculation-inducing conditions) than its expression in flcA^- Tn5 induced mutant strains Sp72001/2/4, which lack the FlcA protein in their cells. Similar to the wild-type strain Sp7, the mutants Sp72001/2/4 also showed 3-4 fold induction of flcA expression in minimal media containing high fructose to N ratio. However, in contrast to the wild-type strain, the mutants did not flocculate in any stage of their growth and the expression of flcA continued to rise after 6 h of growth. Therefore, it seems highly likely that flcA expression is negatively autoregulated by its own product, FlcA. Such regulation may be either direct, via transcriptional regulation of the flcA gene or indirect, by controlling the activity of other genes and proteins that may be involved in the differentiation process of A. brasilense from vegetative to cyst-like cells. A model for self-regulation of flcA is presented.

An invaluable romp through Asia.......2007-05-30

I don't like to shop, but I loved this book. In my experience it's accurate and on-target for Beijing, HK and Hanoi (which is included). It's full of practical information (consider going to Asia via Tel Aviv on El Al -- who knew?) and points out the distinctions betweeen confusing names e.g. Shanghai Museum and Shanghai Art Museum, two different places.

The information on visas, travel and shipping is sensible and matches my experiences in Asia.

The writing style is punchy and entertaining (e.g. "Rental cars: You have to be kidding, right?") so like all the best travel books, it's worth reading even if you never leave home.

Don't waste your money.......2007-01-19

I bought this book for my daughter and son in law who were going to China for 3 weeks. They discarded the book after finding the information
not accurate. They went to one of the recommended restaurants, and couldn't even eat the food. This was just one of many disappointments in this book. She was very disappointed in the book!
She also met someone else on her trip, who had the book and felt the same way. Sorry I bought it for her.

SUZY IS A VETERAN OF ASIA & GIVES US THE BEST.......2006-10-24

Suzy is so multi-faceted and therefore is the best author on travel out there. I have been to Asia recently & traveled with her Born To Shop Guide which steered me in "All The Right Places". Much Ado About Nothing..........2006-05-14

I bought this book for a trip to Bejing and Shanghai - and was quite disappointed. There is nothing in it that is not in other guidebooks. Several of the recommendations were hyped. And the attitude - snobby, awful. I'd suggest the Luxe guides, which not only tell you where to shop but also suggest places to eat, to drink, etc.

If you're a bargain hunter, Born to Shop Hong Kong is a must! Almost every one of Suzy's recommendations are stellar. She makes it easy for you to find those one of a kind treasures to bring home-at discount prices. The book groups stores in geographical areas and provides easy to follow maps so you save time. For those who get tired of shopping, she offers unique sightseeing tips such as the Opera singers at Temple market. The restaurants she recommends are frequently entertaining in themselves, such as the one with a doctor who prescribes a meal based on your health. She's a friendly, funny writer with honest reviews of merchants. Her advice on avoiding tourist traps will save you time and money. I was in Hong Kong alone but felt like I had a friend along in Suzy's book. Suzy takes you places the average tourist would never experience. My sister, a flight attendant who just moved from Hong Kong and a co-worker who leads trips to the area had not been to many spots I visited-thanks to Suzy. "Born to Shop" has specific transportation advice on reaching your destination, includes conversion charts and it's a perfect purse size with a stain resistant plastic cover! This book was my bible for 10 days in H.K. Not only were all the shopping recommendations right on, the hotels, especially The Conrad, and resturants were all excellent recommendations. Now what Suzy needs to do is write a book for the rest of China!

This book is a "must have" for any Gene Autry Fan. It has great pictures from his movies and personal appearances. You also have a list and plot summary of all the movies, tv shows and a listing of all the songs he recorded. If you are into learning about America Favorite Cowboy, the trivia questions and answers are great. I highly recommend this book if you love Gene Autry. As the author says in his introduction, "chances are that you are an avid Autry Fan if you purchased this book". A Fitting Tribute to the Legendary Singing Cowboy.

The greatest book on Autry ever written!.......2000-01-05

This book is an absolute masterpiece. It is filled with thrilling insight, and I have read at least ten times through. It is great for film fans both young and old. There is no collection that is complete without it.

I was hoping that the book might be a little more informative for my two year-old about WHO Santa IS, but it was instead the words to the Gene Autry song "Here Comes Santa Claus" put to admittedly beautiful illustrations. Still very much enjoyed it...it just wasn't quite what I'd thought it would be.

This hardcover book is a steal at $4.99. You can remove the paper flap and the Christmas graphic of Santa and the dog is printed directly on the cover. The pictures on the front and back covers are lovely and elegant. The book is sturdy enough to stand and be displayed as a Christmas decoration. The book is illustrated nicely with thick pages. The sheet music to the song is on both the front and back inside covers of the book.

A nice companion for the song.......2004-09-09

I purchased this book because I grew up listening to Gene Autry's Christmas music. I thought it would be nice to have a tangible version of "Here Comes Santa Claus". This book has beautiful illustrations and within those illustrations Bruce Whatley adds an additional story. The sleeve of the book gives the history of how the song came about as well as a brief history of Gene Autry and Bruce Whatley. Now my daughter can grow up with the wonderful song as well as this wonderful book.

This hardcover book was also a steal for $4.99 as a bargain book!

Fantastic, interesting, supberb!.......1999-11-29

Ruths book tells of the forgotton women of 1916. 90% of these heroic women are long forgotton until now. I have read many books on this subject and i have only really heard of four women namely, Markievicz, Grenan, O Farrell and Winifred Carney. I learned so much from this book and would recomend it to anyone. Buy it, you won't regreat it.
