5 out of 5 stars American Library Journal Review.......2002-02-18

Here is what the prestigious American Library Journal (Vol. 126, No. 8, p. 117, 1 May 2001)said:

"... These guides do not lead tourists to the most popular bars or shopping districts but instead to the various Christian heritage sites in each country. Hexham's ... vast knowledge of history and religion makes these well-researched books a treasure trove of historical information. Each guide follows the same layout: Hexham begins with an overview of the history of each country from prehistoric times to the present. He then includes a chapter on literature, art, and architecture and lists what he considers the top ten Christian heritage sites in each country. Each entry thereafter is in alphabetical order by place name and includes some background information, specific sites to visit, and biographies of significant people associated with the site...

I found the Christian Traveler's Guide series fascinating. A brilliant idea of the author to write the books. Very informative and great history lessons.

This book covers all types of sacred sites. From stone circles like Stonehenge, to Cathedrals and the legends surrounding Glastonbury. Gives great historical background. I gave this book 4 stars because I would have liked to have seen more photos. Otherwise a wonderful book for people planning to travel to Britain or those who want to learn more about it's sacred sites.

Set in 1811 against the dramatic backdrop of the dangerous Natchez Trace, this exciting historical novel tells the story of 14-year-old Zeb and 11-year-old Hannah who team up to make their way safely down the trail from Franklin, Tennessee, to Natchez, Mississippi. Zeb, who does not believe the story he hears that his grandfather was killed by thieves along the trail, is determined to find him. Hannah, who miraculously escaped from the treacherous Mason gang, hopes to be reunited with both her Choctaw Indians friends and her family. When the two daring young adventurers reach the Choctaw village, Zeb is befriended by the Indians and is rewarded for his bravery through initiation into the tribe. Reuniting Hannah with her family is only half of Zeb's goal. Can he find his grandfather? Is he even still alive? As the children narrowly escape life-threatening situations along their journey, Zeb and Hannah learn to value each other's survival skills, courage, and determination.

This book was really interesting to read. My eight year old son really enjoyed following what happened in each chapter. I am from Mississippi so it really showed me what could of happened in Natchez back long years ago. This is an Accelerated Reader and my son read it for AR points in school this year.

        Dear Mr. Applegate,

Our class has just finished reading your book the Devil's Highway. It was a very exciting book.

My favorite scene in the whole book was when Zeb, Hannah, and Christmas all try to cross the river. I think if you had had Big Red and The Fiddler see them in the river and go in after them and try to catch them it would have been more exciting. Another of my favorite scenes in the book was when the sergeant shot off the gun to try to scare Harlequin so that Zeb would fall off.

I wish that you hadn't left the book off at them all being at Hannah's house. If the second book was already out, then it would have been all right. I don't like having to wait to find out what happens to Zeb and his Grandpa.

I think one of the most difficult things for Zeb and Hannah to do was to cross the river. Especially because Hannah didn't know how to swim. Something else that was probably difficult for Hannah was finding out that her family had moved to Washington. Finally something that was difficult for Zeb was letting Hannah come with him on his trip, knowing that he would run out of food and he would also have to make sure that she stayed safe.

I can't wait for the next book Natchez Under The Hill.

        Sincerely, Jeff Stark

In reviewing this book for a 9 year old, I found it provides adventure, suspense and important historical knowledge of the time and area. The story revolves around 2 characters, Hannah and Zeb. And it acknowledges hard work and determination on their part. The ending leaves interest in what may happen in a later book. It is the first book of a trilogy

            Book Description

Everyday we face decisions that carry an element of risk and uncertainty. The ability to analyse, communicate and control the level of risk entailed by these decisions remains one of the most pressing challenges to the analyst, scientist and manager. This book presents the foundational issues in risk analysis - expressing risk, understanding what risk means, building risk models, addressing uncertainty, and applying probability models to real problems. The principal aim of the book is to give the reader the knowledge and basic thinking they require to approach risk and uncertainty to support decision making.
            * Presents a statistical framework for dealing with risk and uncertainty.
            * Includes detailed coverage of building and applying risk models and methods.
            * Offers new perspectives on risk, risk assessment and the use of parametric probability models.
            * Highlights a number of applications from business and industry.
            * Adopts a conceptual approach based on elementary probability calculus and statistical theory.
Foundations of Risk Analysis provides a framework for understanding, conducting and using risk analysis suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduates, analysts and researchers from statistics, engineering, finance, medicine and the physical sciences, as well as for managers facing decision making problems involving risk and uncertainty.

            Book Description

Animals Without Backbones has been considered a classic among biology textbooks since it was first published to great acclaim in 1938. It was the first biology textbook ever reviewed by Time and was also featured with illustrations in Life. Harvard, Stanford, the University of Chicago, and more than eighty other colleges and universities adopted it for use in courses. Since then, its clear explanations and ample illustrations have continued to introduce hundreds of thousands of students and general readers around the world to jellyfishes, corals, flatworms, squids, starfishes, spiders, grasshoppers, and the other invertebrates that make up ninety-seven percent of the animal kingdom.

This new edition has been completely rewritten and redesigned, but it retains the same clarity and careful scholarship that have earned this book its continuing readership for half a century. It is even more lavishly illustrated than earlier editions, incorporating many new drawings and photographs. Informative, concise legends that form an integral part of the text accompany the illustrations. The text has been updated to include findings from recent research. Eschewing pure morphology, the authors use each group of animals to introduce one or more biological principles.

In recent decades, courses and texts on invertebrate zoology at many universities have been available only for advanced biology majors specializing in this area. The Third Edition of Animals Without Backbones remains an ideal introduction to invertebrates for lower-level biology majors, nonmajors, students in paleontology and other related fields, junior college and advanced high school students, and the general reader who pursues the rewarding study of the natural world.

5 out of 5 stars The best book for Invertebrate Zoology.......2003-03-19

As a new teacher of Zoology, this book has become my most valuable resource for the invertebrates. The information is easy to understand and the labeled photos are wonderful. If I could chose a textbook for my students, this would definitely be it. My students have also found it to be a great resource for their studies.

4 out of 5 stars A must for Biologist of all levels........2001-10-29

The beginning zoology student has a daunting task before them. There are at least thirty phyla of animals on earth, most with several unique ecologically important sub groups. The arthropods, for example, include almost a million species of terrestrial insects as well as countless aquatic animals ranging in size from the minute copepod to crabs over two meters in width. To get a grasp on all of these requires a good bit of effort, a well organized mind and no small amount of perseverance. While anybody who has tried is no doubt familiar with the several very good invertebrate zoology textbooks available this is the only book on the subject that can be appreciated by the mass market.

The book groups animals by the traditional phyla, and gives critical information on each. Characteristics, development, ecology and diversity are all included. There are many good black and white photographs and a few good line drawings. If I had one complaint about this book it would be unity. I would like to have seen each chapter organized along a set pattern. This would be no easy feat either. I would also have liked to seen more line illustrations. I did like the books treatment of the protozoans as well.

If you are a student of zoology, beginning or PhD, you should try and get your hands on this book. It will help you understand things better than anything single resource I have seen.

            4 out of 5 stars A great classroom resource!.......2000-08-31

I have used the book "Animals Without Backbones" for 5 years now in my Honors Zoology class here in Maryland. This text is great - it is easy to read and understand and the photos are fabulous! The only thing is that all the pictures are black and white, unlike the "fancy" new biology books. It reads at a level lower than my students, which are honors juniors and seniors. I give them additional information to supplement their studies, but I can't say enough about the photos and the labelled diagrams! A great book!

5 out of 5 stars the best ever.......2000-04-02

This book is a necessity for anyone interested in the fascinating structure of spineless creatures. As an artist, I find this collection of photographs to be a priceless visual dictionary, and a sumptuous treat for the eyes. The writing is scholarly and dense, absolutely comprehensive. Also important for academes: Where drawing illustrations are necessary for clarity, they are doubled up with the photographic representation.

                  Book Description

There are more than a million different kinds of animals in the world. Only 50,000 of these have backbones, and are called vertebrates. The rest are animals without backbones, called invertebrates. This book gives an overall view of these animals and shows the young reader how to distinguish between the major groups. It was awarded Outstanding Science Book for Children.

4 out of 5 stars One can garner some great display ideas from this book.......2004-09-10

I loved the African mask wall display on pages 12/13. The book includes ideas for tabletop, wall, and mantel displays as well as integrating a collection thoughout a whole room.
Drawbacks include some repetition of subjects in photos, some photos too close up to see the overall effect of the display and other photos too cluttered by too wide a shot where the room's furnishings distract from the displayed collection.
Despite those criticisms, it's worth a look for anyone who collects.

                                  Book Description

Not long ago, Karen Duffy was sitting on top of the world and loving it. From calling bingo in a nursing home, she'd taken the express elevator to the penthouse overlooking success street. She worked as a VJ on MTV, as a spokesmodel for Revlon, as a film actress in Dumb and Dumber and other movies, and as a correspondent on Michael Moore's irreverent, Emmy-winning TV Nation. She was selected as one of People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" in the same year she won the Ernest Borgnine Look-alike Contest.

But suddenly Duffy's whirlwind life of celebrity parties and socializing with friends from George Clooney to Jim Carrey to Richard Gere came to an abrupt, grinding halt when she was stricken with a serious illness in one of its rarest forms: sarcoidosis of the central nervous system. The disease left her partially paralyzed, in tremendous pain, and at times near death.

Although she had a serious disease, Duffy soon realized that the only way for her to survive was not to take the disease too seriously. Instead of hiding from life, she chose to run toward it. She learned to embrace the chaos of a life-threatening disease with a wit and humor that helped her to find the love of her life at a time when things seemed darkest.

Model Patient is a gripping, inspiring, and hilarious memoir that recounts the singular triumphs and tragedies of coping with a chronic, life-threatening disease.

Model Patient is an unforgettable, illumnating story that captures Duff's indomitable joie de vivre, revealing how she lives and how she has survived.

1 out of 5 stars Karen Duffy is Trash...........2007-08-15

If you saw her MTV reporting, The Revlon and other beauty Tv adds she did, and more recently hosting really awful reality based TV shows, then you can tell she's trash. Only she can take a bad disease and turn it into some sort of name calling trash book which this is. Please do not bother with her or anything she writes.

4 out of 5 stars Disease and a positive outlook.......2007-03-09

Karen Duffy writes about her affliction with a somewhat uncommon disease in a biographical tale that combines a story about her interesting life with a story about her life dealing with the trials and tribulations of sarcoidosis,a chronic inflammatory disease that affects many different parts of the body. Her wonderful sense of humor and upbeat attitude make this book most entertaining as well as inspiring.

                                  1 out of 5 stars I couldn't make myself finish it!.......2005-12-30

Duffy's storytelling is full of name dropping and "my life is so cool" immaturity that I couldn't make myself read more than a couple of chapters, and that was more painful than my sarcoidosis. This book is awful!

5 out of 5 stars Rachel Ray 30 or DUFF?! No contest!.......2005-03-24

After spending way too much time contemplating which RR tome to add to my collection I stumbled upon an episode of Party Planning with Dave Tuterra (sp?) and instantly decided to get Karen's new book instead. LOVE IT!

I am about 35 years old and I grew up thinking Karen Duffy was ABSOLUTELY the hottest and coolest VJ/ model on the planet! I wanted to live her life, have her job, and sleep with her boyfriends! If anyone could convince me to "play for the other team" it would have been her. My girlfriends and I even used her moto- "We're getting married in May- may the day never come!"

I actually cried when I heard about her illness which was regarded as terminal at the time. I read Model Patient- her book about her struggle with CNS Sarcoidosis and was amazed that the icon of party, rock and roll and pop culture could be such a strong and resilient person underneath.

Now, like the rest of us she has traded in the club scene and coctails for marriage and motherhood.
Her new book 'Slob in the Kitchen" is not for the refined foodie that wants to spend hours preparing a jaw dropping meal, but for people that need to make dinner. Preferably one that the kids will eat. Highly recommend!

3 out of 5 stars Not Homer Simpson's kind of Duff........2004-01-01

Everyone wants to be a star, but no one wants to literally crystalize internally from sarcoidosis. That is the life, onscreen and off, of Karen "Duff" Duffy.

For the unbaptised, if Match Game were still around, Karen Duffy is the kind of all-around celeb that would be the next Brett Somers - Wiseacre, Girl Friday, Broad-in-the-making. She also meets the pain of a chronic disease with a glee that most people could not summon.

While a little of the "Duff" persona goes a long way, the sincerity of "Karen" is good medicine, page by happy spoonful. --Laurel825
