Serenity!.......2005-10-27
Both books serve as the focal point of our coffee table. I find myself thumbing through one whenever I need a 5 minute vacation! Thanks for the therapy!
High Country: Touring the Colorado Rockies.......2005-10-27
As a fourth generation Coloradan, I admit to having a natural skepticism whenever I initially feast my eyes upon a photography book that, by its title, is intended to 'capture' the beauty, majesty and unique qualities of the Rockies. My close attachment to the Rocky Mountains makes me sometimes feel that most photographers will fall short. WRONG assumption! I'm delighted to report that Sue Neider has successfully captured the heart and soul of the Colorado Rockies in her latest book in honest, forthright, unique and spectacular images. 'High Country: Touring he Colorado Rockies' absolutely affected me as I moved from page to page---and made me feel as though Ms. Neider must have spent her life out here, which I've learned is not the case. Her latest book was like having a personalized guided tour of the Rockies and I recommend it 100% to readers living anywhere---including others like me who have spent their entire lives embracing mountains and scenery in the Rocky Mountains region. Terrific viewing, excellent text, and an experience I will revisit over and over. This is a book that I am proud to own!
A High Achievement.......2005-08-11
Three years ago, Susan Neider's photographic and literary guide to the Colorado Plateau, Color Country, moved me to write a review on this site in the hope that others would discover her work as well. Her new guide to the Colorado Rockies, High Country, proves that Color Country was no quirk. If there could remain any doubt from the choice and intensity of her photographs that Neider's accomplishment is to understand the landscape and what that means to the human experience, here's how she, in a few words, shows that she gets it: "The peaks are here," she says of the surroundings, "so are the valleys. So is the range of vision that draws me away from an intense and restless inner self." And that's it. Neider's descriptions, advice, and photos all reflect a passion rarely found in guidebooks. Those who want more than a passingly pleasant experience with the places Neider visits would take her, or at least her books, along.
Another winner!.......2005-08-07
I tend to carry a lot of books when I travel, so I'm careful about what I pack. But Neider's guides are essential travel gear and take the place of a lot of other books I might have to take along. I learned this when she published Color Country a few years ago and wore out my first copy traipsing around Utah with it, planning trips and choosing places to visit. Now she's done the same thing, in spades, for Colorado with High Country and it's a welcome addition to my travel library, too. I'm a nut about geology, but a lot of what is written is hard to read. But Neider's a first-rate explainer and provides just what you need to understand the landscape. And then there are her pictures. Direct, clean and engaging, the same clarity evident in her writing shines through in her photographs. If they weren't so inspirational I'd be tempted to put my own camera away, knowing I'll never get the same feeling of a place she manages to capture so well. Her photo tips keep me shooting, though. I think, as with her first book, I'll be giving a lot of copies of this one to friends who are traveling west.
Brava, Neider, once again!

Book Description
This true story of bold adventure recounts the extraordinary journeys of Fridtjof Nansen, a scientist and explorer determined to discover what secrets lie hidden in the frozen far North. He crossed the icy wastes of Greenland and later journeyed into the polar ice to study Arctic Ocean currents. On that expedition, he attempted to trek to the North Pole. What happened in the forbidding land of ice, polar bears, and killing cold makes for a gripping tale of survival. Illustrated with maps and Nansen's own photographs and drawings, this book contains a wealth of information about the polar region.
Book Description
A provocative examination of the essential – and widely misunderstood--personality type of today's most innovative leaders.
What is it that Oprah Winfrey, Jack Welch, Martha Stewart, and Bill Gates all have in common? According to psychoanalyst, anthropologist, and consultant Michael Maccoby, it’s not just enormous success and celebrity – it’s narcissism. In The Productive Narcissist, Maccoby proposes a new paradigm of modern leadership and zeros in on one common character trait: the narcissistic personality. Challenging prevailing leadership theories, Maccoby argues that today’s most innovative leaders are not consensus-building bureaucrats; they are “productive narcissists” with the interrelated set of skills -- foresight, systems thinking, visioning, motivating, and partnering – that he terms “strategic intelligence.” Rejecting the negative stereotype of the individual who is destroyed by a pathological preoccupation with himself, Maccoby redefines the productive narcissist as the personality type who is best suited to lead during times of rapid social and economic change. At the same time, he makes clear that narcissistic leadership doesn’t always mean successful leadership and that narcissists lacking strategic intelligence are fated to crash and burn.
Beginning with an examination of the crucial role personality plays in the workplace and an analysis of the primary personality types (a questionnaire allowing readers to evaluate their own personalities is included), Maccoby makes an eye-opening case for how narcissism has been misunderstood and how throughout history narcissists have always emerged to inspire people and to shape the future. While narcissism can be extraordinarily useful—even necessary—for effective leadership, Maccoby shows how it also has a distinct downside when narcissists become unrealistic dreamers and harbor the illusion that only circumstances or enemies block their success. Strategic intelligence is the hallmark of the productive narcissist, and by elucidating its key qualities – and how they can be developed – Maccoby illuminates both what it takes for narcissists to truly succeed and how to work with them most effectively .
Based on over thirty years of first-hand experience consulting with business leaders around the world, The Productive Narcissist redefines the way we understand and relate to today’s leaders.
Customer Reviews:
Changing the world personality.......2006-06-29
Maccoby used his personal and professional experience as consultant for different corporations and settings in changing the view of narcissistic leader from negative to more positive one. He emphasized the importance of the role of the personality in the workplace. The book focuses on personality types, their weaknesses, and their strengths, and how to understand those types in the work settings. Maccoby asserted that the productive narcissist has many positive characteristics that enable them to improve the quality of the work. Also, he emphasized that strategic intelligence has a major role in the success of productive narcissist. The book provided a good guide of how to work with a narcissist leaders and how to understand the four types of personality: erotic, obsessive, marketing and narcissistic.
Interesting Take on The Narcissistic Personality.......2006-06-29
This is a good book for discovering the differences between the four different personality traits and how the erotic, obsessive, and marketing personalities relate differently to the narcissistic personality. The author does a good job in defining the narcissistic characteristics and arguing why these characteristics should not always be looked upon as being negative. The author explains well why narcissists act the way they do. Therefore, this book can provide some great insight to anyone who has/has had a narcissistic co-worker or boss. The author uses a lot of examples from his experience as a consultant for over thirty years, his working with a Mexican Village during the time of upheaval because of the Revolution, and other interviews and readings about narcissistic leaders. The one downfall of the book is the authors repetition of stories throughout the book.
The Goleman antidote.......2005-01-03
Wow! Now this is a book about what leadership really is! Real leaders are narcissists; they have an inner drive to influence others and they like power. Now, narcissism can manifest itself into positive or negative leadership, as Maccoby explains.
Successful leaders are not warm and fuzzy types; they succeed because they can take tough decisions on difficult matters, oftentimes ignoring or not listening to others. They are mission driven and will do what's necessary to get the goal done. This book flies in the face of Daniel Goleman and others who have jumped on the emotional intelligence bandwagon (claiming that the stuff of leadership is empathy and emotional intelligence). According to Maccoby this stuff is "wishful thinking" and not what great leadership is made of (e.g., Bill Gates is the prototype narcissist with an EQ of zero).
Harnessing Narcissism.......2003-11-17
The book teaches how to harness malignant or pathological narcissism. Narcissists are driven, visionary, ambitious, exciting and productive, and if handled properly - an asset to the corporation. While I do not share the author's view - the book is an impressive achievement and of use both in the academic and in the corporate setting. Sam Vaknin, author of "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited".
Insightful, thought-provoking, intriguing.......2003-10-19
In these confusing and uncertain times, the cry goes out for more visionary leaders. We need men and women who can lead us out of the darkness of despair and short-term Wall Street thinking into the clear air of vision, goals, and high achievement. Enter the narcissistic leader. Narcissists admire themselves, they believe in themselves. They have complete confidence in themselves, even though they may think they can do more than they really can.
The dictionary tells us that narcissism is "a psychological condition characterized by self-preoccupation, lack of empathy, and unconscious deficits in self-esteem." Maccoby-a psychoanalyst, anthropologist, and consultant-takes us further. He explains that "narcissistic leaders are not a product of their time; rather, they are a product of their personalities, and are psychologically suited to rise, and fall, during disruptive times." Sometimes their grandiosity serves them-and their organizations-well...especially if they (or their organizations) are protected by counterbalancing aides or confidants. Sometimes that grandiosity can be their downfall.
In this enjoyable and education book, Maccoby describes several psychological styles and how they influence leadership behavior. He concentrates on the productive narcissist, results-focused aggressive leaders who can valiantly lead their organizations to the brink of destruction. The good news---bad news juxtaposition is explored in page after page, with enlightening examples from the lives of historical figures like Napoleon to today's leaders whom we read about in the newspapers daily. Not only does he name names, but Maccoby goes deep into who these leaders are, what they did, why they did it, and the impacts of their behavior. It's a fascinating read that will have you bobbing your head with understanding and insight.
This book will be valuable to leaders-and not just narcissists. Human resource professionals, executive coaches, and venture capitalists will find the knowledge in these pages to be quite useful. A self-test, with full explanation of scoring and meaning, adds value to the book. Index.

a great book.......2003-02-12
Dolphin Days is a great book about a guy who researched dolphins. It explains their behavior and scientifics without getting boring. I highly recommend it!
A thinking-person's book about dolphins.......2000-12-14
As a graduate student in Hawaii, I was fortunate enough to have encounters with dolphins on several snorkle outings. It is certainly a special experience, but stop reading here if you think I am about to launch into a new-age rant about "...how dolphins are helping humans to evolve"!
Norris presents an accessible description about dolphin behavior and the science involved in that study. Although I have a science background, I know little biology, and yet Norris clearly presents this work in terms I could understand, and that any thinking person will be comfortable with. I have since purchased other books by Norris on dolphins, and schedule snorkle trips everytime I visit the Islands. If you have seen the latest IMAX movie "Dolphins" (dedicated to Norris), now is the time to read the book!

This was an insightful look at an American novelty........1999-10-19
Gr8 PL8s was a humorous and informative book about this country's obsession with vanity plates. Moreover, it exposes in a very intelligent way, Americans' need for attention. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for an idea for their own plate or for all of us out there who enjoy reading other people's tags. This book seems to cover just about every plate under the sun. There is even a chapter where you have to guess the true meaning of the plate. Sam Riley also provides us with an interesting history of license plates which I might have gone through life never knowing. For the price, put this on your must read list.

Book Description
Don't Look Back, We're Not Going That Way! is a book for anyone who has felt unloved and unattractive, been broke, experienced failure, been fat and thin and fat again, had a fire, had cancer and/or a nervous breakdown, or been widowed. This is also a book for anyone who has found love in midlife, experienced success, adopted a child, had a spiritual awakening, flourished from the love of family and friends, or started all over again after losing a spouse. It is told by a woman who can still "count her lucky chickens," a woman who makes you laugh out loud, and a woman you feel like you've known your entire life.
Customer Reviews:
Great stuff.......2007-07-18
I have always admired Marcia Wallace. Although I was not around to see the original broadcasts of the "Newhart Show", she made a permanent impression on me through the countless hours of reruns that I've seen over the years. She has endlessly been called a 'one trick pony' - inasmuch as she is only really known for one role, that of Carol Kester Bondurant on the "Newhart Show". And Marcia herself admits that she has never really gotten good reviews for any of her other work (save of course for the also iconoclastic Ms. Edna Krubappel voicethrowing that she's done on "The Simpsons" for years.) Nonetheless, the character of Carol was a significant contribution to television history. She was very much her own person, and Marcia's comedic talents made her unforgettable. Carol Burnett, a genius herself, has said that 'if you're too pretty, you can't be a comedian.' Such was the case with Marcia. No, she wasn't that attractive - but she had a perfect look that lent itself perfectly, even if it was only for that one role. She never even had to read for the part - she was hired instantly by MTM Enterprises.
Marcia's life has indeed been a rocky one - and the tone of this book is fine. She's a survivor and she isn't full of self pity. Despite the rags, she's gotten plenty of riches, which included a brief marriage to a man who was very much the one-and-only for her, and a great kid.
However, I think the book overly emphasizes her marriage, the adoption of their son, and her husband's subsequent death. Virtually no details are given about her work on the "Newhart Show", "The Simpsons", or much of anything else. And in that regard, the book is a disappointment.
If these things were added, it would be an absolutely killer book.
Hopefully someday a second edition will be done. Nonetheless, what is presented is a very enjoyable read.
Don't Look Back, Look Into The Future!.......2007-06-12
Marcia Wallace-what can be said? She is a woman on the umpteenth wit and full of honesty, always saved from being too sorrowful with her God-given ability to bring humor to situations that would bring the regular person to their knees...but Marcia isn't one of those "regular" people. I love this book because it tells anyone, no matter what circumstances they find themselves in, with a bit of keen-sighted observations and an always open pot of humor, they can achieve all of their dreams one day at a time.
Inspirational, emotional, motivational and laugh out loud funny........2007-03-11
I just finished reading Marcia Wallace's autobiography. This is an incredible read. She opens the door to her life for us as if she were opening the door to her closest confident and friend. I laughed out loud at her many mishaps and cried during the deepest loss a person can experience. This is a great gift for anyone who has had cancer touch his or her life, and who hasn't. It is also a celebration of life, friendship and family. This is a wonderful gift to share with girlfriends of all ages.
ATTENTION OPRAH!.......2006-03-30
This book is NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER material. Marcia Wallace's book is as deeply profound as it is silly. It doesn't matter if nothing or everything has happended to you in your lifetime, you will relate to the humanity in her stories.
The book is bursting with self empowerment and triumph over tragedy and it's one of the funniest books I've ever read.
Marcia looks back with genuine laughter.......2005-09-26
Look, if everyone who wrote a memoir was a literary writer, would we all be devouring memoirs like we are? Heck no--we've already heard that story. Marcia's story is... well, it's not your typical, 'here's-my-life-as-an-actress' kind of story. Marcia acknowledges indirectly that who we are has a lot to do not only with where we came from but also what we've been through. And heaven knows, she's been through a lot. But somehow she manages to remain a genuinely sincere person who seems to have a rainbow hovering quite near her at all times--something I will now try to be aware of in my own life after reading her book. Unlike many memoirs currently on the market, this is not an outpouring of self-absorbed angst (as it would be if I were writing it). It's a riotous celebration of the absurdity of human life and the power of the human spirit to triumph against all odds. Marcia writes the way she talks, and she's hilariously funny. Buy this book and read it all the way through the next time you have a "life sucks" day. That's my prescription for happiness.

Book Description
Anthony Ashley Cooper, born in 1801 and, from 1851, the Seventh Earl of Shaftesbury, occupied a remarkable position in nineteenth-century England. In this scholarly interpretation based on an exhaustive exploration of the manuscript archives, Geoffrey Finlayson sets him securely in his historical context, at the same time bringing into relief both his private and public lives. The author reveals, with masterly control, this highly complex "Eminent Victorian" as a most powerful challenger of the evils of the contemporary world with a commitment and energy that inspired respect, loyalty and great affection. The book fully explains Shaftesbury's deep moral and political outlook, as well as his social thought, and coherently links his concern with government legislation to his own charitable enterprise. Shaftesbury's pioneering work in the areas of factory, public health and housing reform is persuasively illuminated, as are his relationships with other leading figures of the time, including Cobden, Peel, Palmerston, Gladstone and Disraeli.
Customer Reviews:
A very detailed and complete biography of Shaftesbury........2004-11-06
I wrote my A level course work essay on the Seventh Earl of Shaftesbury, and therefore read all the books on him I could get my hands on. So I feel I can give you a sensible opinion that will be some help. Finlayson's is the most recent biography and includes analysis of the others. It a long read, but what I liked about it was that it went into lots of detail. So when I wanted information on a paticular event of his life such as a piece of legislation he was trying to pass, it was Finlayson I consulted. That is not to say that his book includes everything, there are many others that are well worth reading. Gerogina Battiscombe's book is beautifully writain although I felt a bit one sided, whereas Finlayson's is more balanced. There are others like "Shaftesbury" by Best and ofcource the original biography approved by Shaftesbury, a beast of a book (three volumes) which I shyed away from- however if you've got the stamina for it. So if you're researching Shaftesbury this book will be lots of help.
