A delight to find.......2005-08-01

I was delighted to find this book in the Hovenweep National Monument visitor centre bookstore. I had already photographed the wild flowers of Arches, Canyonlands and Colorado for my website. Now I could identify them. The book organises the flowers by colour which is good for an amateur like me. Now, I have to admit that I could not identify all the species I photographed, but I was pleased when I could. A big thank you to Damian Fagan for this book, I thought I might be a little bit too excentric hunting for new wild flowers in Canyondlands and Arches National Parks, even worse photographing wild flowers during my lunch hour while working in Colorado.

The Colorado Plateau country of southern Utah, western Colorado, and northern Arizona is justifiably famous for its magnificent scenery, but the stunning wildflowers are less widely appreciated. Fagan's "Canyon Country Wildflowers" is the best guide to these treasures that I've yet seen. The photographs are absolutely top-notch (sometimes I browse the guide, just daydreaming...), often showing the entire plant in its natural habitat. Likewise, the collection is relatively complete. Flowers are organized by colors and typically easy to find. To top it off, the book is relatively compact and durable in the field. Fodor's "Prague and Budapest" is an intelligent and convenient pairing of travel guides to two cities frequently included on the same itinerary.

"Prague and Budapest" is clearly written and accessible. The author identifies the key landmarks and historic sites and suggests sightseeing priorities based on the length of stay.

More important, the author explains the significance of the various sites concisely and in historical or artistic context. Fodor's "Prague and Budapest" assists the reader in understanding and appreciating the sites visited. The cultural information is presented in a readable and engaging style and will enhance my experience.

A lovely, warm little cookbook.......2005-06-04

This is a very nice little comb-bound paperback written by an Amish woman, and filled with her family's favorite recipes, and some warm comments about their faith. However, it is currently selling for over $40 plus shipping - which is utterly ridiculous. For that price, you'd be much better advised to purchase a few of Maria Adams's cookbooks, filled with tried-and-true Amish and Mennonite favorites which were collected and tested by the author. I'm not putting down Ms. Yoder's book; just pointing out that it is a small book which was never intended to sell for big bucks. Although I liked it very much, I would have been much more impressed if the recipes were preceded by brief descriptions explaining why the author considers them special. JMHO.

Kathy Yoder's artful combination of devotional storytelling and recipe-sharing show us that the most important ingredient in every recipe is love. Simple recipes cooked with great love will please every member of the family.

As we cook Yoder's from-scratch recipes, we learn that the process of cooking and baking helps us appreciate the God from whom all good things come.

A great book telling a story I have always been curious about.When I found out that something like 25% of of the black American radio audience listened to country music I have to admit I was both surprised and yet I wasn't.Country music was always a "adult" music and as is stated in the book,black Americans have not just contributed styles and techniques but have also been practioners of the form.Foster introduces the reader to various people, from people who work in the industry(DJ's,promo people etc..)to musicians and even fans.I have to admit the only black country singers I'd ever heard were Charley Pride (obviously)and Stoney Edwards(fantastic)until I heard the CD box devoted to black country musicians called "FROM WHERE I STAND".The singer LaMelle Prince was a stand out for me.Now my curiosity has been aroused I'm going to try and get some of the singers that sounded interesting. Two points 1)Now that a book has been written about the influence of black music on Country,when will some politically in-correct, non-liberal type write a book on the influence of various European musics on black music.There are hundreds of books written about black American music forms showing its relationships to African styles and rhythms yet no one seems to have bothered to research the influence from the other side as author Barney Hoskyns' classic book on soul music with a country flavour"SAY IT ONE TIME FOR THE BROKENHEARTED"

(newly reprinted-get this,if you like this book) states on one page,it seems too contentious a topic for an impeccably liberal musicologist to research and write about,black musicians are deified,white country musicians are bumpkins and rednecks who steal,yet black musicians who played music of an Anglo-Celtic or European style were great musicians who adapted to a awful situation (slavery)not that they may have actually enjoyed playing the music not counting their enslaved position in society of the time. 2)It was heart warming to read about a "young star in the making",a 13 yr old girl who wants to be a country singer.I really hope she makes it. Foster has done a great service to all the people and fans of country music in the black community who have followed their love of a style of music that has never been thought to have been their own but as she has shown can proudly claim their own as much as anyone.Country music is not just "white"music,it is an "AMERICAN" music as this book proudly shows.This book deserves a wider audience,Foster has self-published this effort,but it deserves publishing by a major publishing house to expose to a larger audience,I only found it here at Amazon.com by accident.Lucky Me !

Ever since I began work in the mutual fund industry six years ago, I've looked for books that would increase my understanding of the industry. Many books tell you how to invest in mutual funds and a couple attempt to describe (but in my view unsuccessfully) how the industry works. This week I found and read Gremillion's book on mutual funds. And I was amazed. It's all there. History of the industry, the laws that affect it, how funds are manufactured and distributed, e-business and a lot more. I really enjoyed reading the author's impartial discussion of industry issues like the debate over fees and expenses, active vs. passive management, and the state of the market.

Gremillion's clear and concise writing makes his book an interesting and easy read. Too bad it wasn't available when I was in college.

This book is written in a clear, non-academic, and easy-to-follow style. And even though he generally speaks well of the industry, the author does not sugar-coat it. A number of illustrative anecdotes (the book is full of these) describe less than exemplary behavior, such as how one Minneapolis money manager ran his funds into the ground speculating on interest rate movements.

The book is full of data as well. For example, the author doesn't just tell about how much a few star portfolio managers get in compensation. When he discusses what investment managers get paid, he includes the results from an industry survey that show averages and ranges for a variety of positions. John Bogle appropriately calls the book "authoritative" in his foreword.

His time as a professor shows in his insistence on backing up all his assertions with hard data. And even though he generally speaks well of the industry, this is no hagiography. A number of illustrative anecdotes (the book is full of these) describe less than exemplary behavior, such as how one Minneapolis money manager ran his funds into the ground speculating on interest rate movements. Anyone interested in learning more about U.S. mutual funds should read this book.

This is the singular most effective tool that I have ever used in working with both young and old horses. As an equine professional, I have applied many of the techniques and methods to my own herd. Doug is truly the pleasure master. I believe that many people outside of the industry would enjoy this beautifully photographed and well written journal about pleasure horses.

Basic info on Hoffman.......2003-02-05

This biography is not as much a biography as a review of interviews made to Hoffman and reviews of Hoffman's movies (too bad there isn't one single word from critic-guru Pauline Kael). In fact, I didn't see much research here, the author never gets in one single day in Dustin's life with phrases such as "in 1967 he made this play and this movie and got these reviews". (And this book ends in 1984, with 'Tootsie'.) Certainly, it must be difficult to get into Hoffman's life, friends and relatives but this book doesn't seem to have tried that at all. The resolution of the pictures is like a xerox copy (this book is a reprint).

Enlightened Lessons in Pedagogy.......2002-04-05

If you are not a Christian, don't assume that this book is only of interest to "the Godly" or those who want to promote Protestant education. Watt was a conservative but scientifically enlightened preacher and his advice, particulary in part II, where he discourses elegantly on how to be an effective classroom teacher, very often rings as true in the 21st century as in the 18th, and is full of common sense suggestions for any kind of teacher, from evangelical to atheist.

Sound and Godly Advice on Study and Reasoning.......2002-01-09

Isaac Watts has left us a rich inheritance in his book The Improvment of the Mind. His approach provides excellent advice on how to obtain knowledge through all aspects of life, yet keeps the larger reality of God always in view. This book is loaded with thought-provoking gems to make us more efficient and proficient at true learning. Dr. Watts' has established a sound basis for education from early youth all the way to old age. A CLASSIC AMONG CLASSICS!.......2001-07-26

I must recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their mind, learn new study techniques, the true way to study, the reason for study, etc. This is a highly enjoyable book. Written in sections, you can pick it up and start reading anywhere that you find it interesting. There is a section on raising young men and women. A very godly man wrote this, and it shows through.
