Desert Rat Fantastic.......2003-03-24
This well written book is a "must have" for those who enjoy exploring the desert. The authors personable writing style, trip routes, and historical information make this a good book. But, the authors illustrated love of the desert and it's solitude and beauty make this a fantastic book. Those who love exploring the desert will treasure this book. I have a hundred or so books about the deserts, and this one is in the top three. When I need to relax from the days work load, I open this book; I'm taken from my office into the desert; My office chair becomes the front seat of my jeep, desert breeze in my face, while ghosts of yesterday's jackass miners abound.
The Desert Waits - Desert Dancing Takes You There.......2000-06-14
Guidebooks are a particular fascination of mine. Where to go, what to see, and how to get there, all form the basis of many a road trip. Desert Dancing, a new book devoted to the California desert country, goes beyond being a simple A to B guidebook. Len Wilcox has put together a volume of information that takes you along as he explores the region. In a friendly, and enjoyable manner Len writes of his personal adventures off-roading in the rugged reaches of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts, as well as Death Valley. It is obvious Len is one of the new generation of Rainbow Chasers - those who ventured West in search of gold. However, it is not the gold of the 49'ers Len is seeking, it is the gold that lies in the history of the people and places of the Desert lands. Subtitled, Exploring the Land, the People, the Legends of the California Deserts, Desert Dancing introduces not just the wonders of the desert, but some of the people who make the small towns and wide spots more interesting than any city in the world. Desert Dancing reads like the journal of a friend, who, in a highly readable style, shares with you a wonderful trip. Excellent research, combined with an in-person familiarity of the subject at hand, makes this a necessary volume for anyone considering a trip into the desert, or for the armchair explorer who wants to gain a sense of what the desert is all about.
An Outstanding Adventure - Excellent reading.......2000-03-24
Wow! This book places you right there, there in the desert. You can feel the heat, see the the old west as it was and what it has become. Wilcox seems to take you on a trip without you ever leaving your seat. This books makes you want to pack up your vehicle and head to the desert. But don't leave home without the book, you'll get lost in that vast sea of sand without it. Read this book and you'll enjoy what the California desert really has to offer. Water, water, water, please!

Customer Reviews:
Completely Disappointed.......2006-03-18
I admit that I purchased this book mostly because it advertised a coupon for a free directory of international employers. When I called the company to order the book, I found out that the directory dates from 1994. Obviously I decided to forgoe paying the $10 to have it shipped to me. Otherwise, I have been diligently trying websites that are listed in the book and many of them no longer exist or have very little useful information for international career listings or other job search aids. This book is to be avoided.
Good compilation of URLs. NOT a bible.......2005-10-31
This is a good book indeed. However, the description is very misleading.
It is basically compilation of job search engines all over the world. Search as hard as you want, you won't find any info on visas and permits or tips and tricks how to persuade a foreign employer hire you.
You can find it in Google or A9, if you search hard enough. However, this book also gives you brief description of each site. On the downside, web is a dynamic place so many links are outdated or irrelevant.
I wonder if the people that called it a Bible and told that it includes the "dirt of finding jobs" actually read it.
Find the Perfect Job in Any Country.......2005-07-07
If you want to find an International Job, this book gives you the URLs for job sites in Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Russia, the Middle East, Latin America Canada and Mexico. This book also has a page at the end for you to order a free directory of International Employers. Each URL listing also has a brief summary of the website.
One of my friends teaches English in Russia and she loves her job. Her parents now teach in China. The possibilities are really endless for anyone who wants to travel the world.
If you have been wondering how you could live in an exotic location or just live in another country for a few years at a time to learn about the world, then this book will be very helpful. If you are looking for volunteer teaching opportunities, this book has many resources.
The resort jobs looked tempting although I still have yet to see a job listing that says: "Stay at our resort free and read books all day long." It could happen.

Why Animals Do What They Do.......2001-02-24
If you are responsible for an animal you need this book. Whether you are a owner, trainer, petsitter, groomer, boarder, behaviorist, veterinarian or other caregiver, you must have this book on your shelves and within reach.
The author, Edward M. Barrows, has done an outstanding job in walking the fine line between writing for the general reader and the professional in this field. As a reference, it is a "must read" for all.

Great book for the collector or highway traveler.......2002-10-11
Taking a road trip? This book is a terrific take along for those games of license plate spotting, showing all the variations of license plates for all 50 states. Perfect for solving the inevitable arguments that occur when someone claims that a car from Hawaii just passed on the New Jersey Turnpike. (If it hasn't happened to you, then you've never taken a road trip in your life or you're an only child and I pity you!)
If you're a license plate collector, this isn't the most in depth book available, but it has wonderful color photographs and appears to be quite up-to-date. You'll be amazed at how many different plates are in circulation, and the variety of artistic interpretations of these everyday, often overlooked objects.
Either way, it's well worth buying and tucking into the glove compartment.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed........2005-06-22
Owning the 2002 edition of this title, I was very disappointed in the overall presentation of the book. Yes the book does include up to date illustrations of plates, but these are much smaller. Additional pages of info for example at the front of the book have been dropped. The quality of the paper used is also inferior.
Thorough and concise, great illustrations!.......2000-06-20
This is a great book for collectors of license plates or just folks interested in the beautiful and diverse license plates available in each state.
Great for kids to study on long road trips or even to sit on a coffee table. Great illustrations show you exactly what the plates look like.
All you could ever want to know about license plates..........2000-03-24
Each updated version of this book is more insightful and more complete. This edition has expanded information about Mexico plates that has not appeared in the older versions! If you're interested in license plates, this is the book for you!
This a top of the line book, very good........1999-04-05
I bought this book for years, And I will continue to buy it , It has alot of info for plate nuts like Me, This year I buy about five of them for fellow collectors overhere in The Netherlands, Keep up the good work, Hans Borger.

A through, attractive guide.......2004-06-01
The joys of imagination and planning are many in Crandall and Crandall's thorough guide. Accompanied by clear how-to advice and beautiful color photographs, the book covers attractive supports, pruning, maintaining and propagating advice as well as how to use vines for space maximizing, camouflage, fruit, scent or just beauty.
Separated into chapters such as Hardy Vines, Annual Climbers, Climbing Roses, Ground Covers and Edible Fruits, the entries are packed with descriptive flowering and planting information as well as caveats and possible disease and insect problems. For less hardy vines there is advice for bringing them inside.

Quirk and Schoell's rehashing of the biographical details of Frank Sinatra and the rest of his crew is only intermittently able to disguise its contempt for their personal and professional lives. If there's an opportunity for a pot shot, rest assured this book will take it, from the admittedly deserved (Cannonball Run II, anyone?) to the probably uncalled for (a charity performance for a halfway house for ex-convicts is dismissed with snide comments about Sinatra the wannabe gangster). Much of the source material is drawn from Quirk's footwork as an entertainment reporter in the 1960s; interviews that he conducted with Peter Lawford over the years also provide some juicy tales of sex and drugs, as well as the inside scoop on his ouster from "the Clan" after brother-in-law President Kennedy backed out of his planned Palm Springs vacation at Frank Sinatra's home. (The same stories, with much less venom and some more pizazz, can be found in Shawn Levy's Rat Pack Confidential.)
Book Description
The Rat Pack -- Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop -- had talent, money, and power to burn. They also had something else even more important.
They had fun.
Customer Reviews:
Out-ratting the Rats.......2007-07-16
The back cover suggests that the main reason for the Rat Pack's appeal was the fun they seemed to be having. The contents, however, seem to be intended to deconstruct this premise. One by one, in numbing detail, the five men (and "mascot" Shirley Maclaine) are subjected to jaundiced, gossipy biographies that portray them as pathetic characters. Very little of the information is original - many of the anecdotes related here are familiar and seem selectively drawn from more in-depth biographies. The tone is consistently vulgar and deprecating. There are also tedious reviews of all the films of every Pack member, including critiques of seemingly every cast member's performance, prolonging an already unpleasant read. It is as if the authors wished to undermine the undeniable talent and charm these performers had, and which remains their legacy. This cheap anthology simply exploits that legacy.
fuhgettaboutit.......2006-12-14
I'm going to throw away my copy, too. Perhaps the most annoying aspect, for a film buff, is how the authors add insult to injury with their "film reviews." It's bad enough that they get facts wrong -- most of the score to ON THE TOWN was NOT written by Leonard Bernstein, for example -- but then these ignoramuses presume to pass negative judgment on classics like ON THE TOWN and FROM HERE TO ETERNITY, a right they clearly haven't earned with their "research."
Save your dough.......2004-01-28
The only reason I give this book one star is because zero stars wasn't an option. It took two guys to write this tripe? One monkey could have done a better job. This book is lazy and poorly written and I am ticked off that I wasted my money on it. The definitive book on the Rat Pack has got to be Shawn Levy's. After reading the first two pages of Levy's book I was hooked. The difference between a real writer and a couple of hacks.
CLIFF "RAT" NOTES.......2002-05-15
Here is the deal. If you are just starting to get into the Rat Pack or any of the players individually. Then this book is a good start. I would call it the Cliff notes of the individuals and their movies. If you have seen all the movies including the Matt Helm movies or if you have already read books on Dean, Frank, Sammy's biography then you are way ahead of this book and pass it by.
But if you have not seen the movies and want to learn the basics of each man and then from there search into each one of them seperatly then this is a good starter. There are some great books on all the guys but you will finded Sammy's Biography to be the most fun. Remember to check out deanmartinfancenter.com for more info on the Rat Pack. For the guys who wrote this you could have given us some fun facts or answered some questions, instead they read everyone else book and put together their own version.
Ratty.......2002-01-28
The blurb on the cover of THE RAT PACK says "They had fun" but there's precious little fun to be found here. This book is a tedious listing of (mostly negative) events. It lacks any sparkle and vigor, and if I believed half of it, I'd have to wonder just what the appeal of this group of overgrown adolescents could be. There had to be more.
The Chairman of The Board is the centerpiece as an egomaniacal bully who uses his star power to make the world feel indebted to him. His reported temper tantrums seem utterly absurd. Anyone who used his fists or threats of mob violence as much as the authors claim Sinatra did, should have and would have been locked up, "different era" or no. The Frank Sinatra in these pages wouldn't be a "King of Cool". He wouldn't be anything much.
The rest of the boys orbit around Frank like some kind of an inebriated solar system. The boozing and skirt-chasing is leaden, so where's the thrill? Where are the laughs? If this book is at all accurate (and it isn't, listing Dean Martin's date of death incorrectly), it means that this group of supremely talented entertainers valued nothing, not even themselves.
The bulk of the book is made up of mostly scathing summaries of the Rat Pack movies. Nary a word is said about either Frank or Dean's musical careers. Sammy Davis Jr. is dismissed as little more than the Rat Pack houseboy. Peter Lawford is depicted as a sexually confused drug addict craving the attention of the others. Joey Bishop is virtually forgotten. The Rat Pack Mascots (Shirley MacLaine and Angie Dickinson) get barely honorable mentions (MacLaine far more than Dickinson). One has to wonder why Shirley MacLaine would continue to associate with The Rat Pack after being assaulted by mobster Sam Giancana twice in their company. The book begs an answer. MacLaine is no slouch, so obviously more and better was happening with the "Clan" than this sordid book deigns to tell us.
To really appreciate the Rat Pack give a listen to The Rat Pack Live at the Sands or The Ultimate Rat Pack Collection: Live & Swingin (CD & DVD).

Book Description
The author and diplomat Sir Paul Rycaut (1629-1700) was the leading authority of his day on the Ottoman Empire. This biographical study draws on a wide range of source material to reconstruct for the first time his varied literary and official career. It also provides a lively account of the English community at Smyrna during the eleven years of his consulship there. Rycaut's seventeen years in Turkey were followed by a brief spell as chief secretary in Ireland under James II, and eleven years as British resident at the Hanse Towns for William and Mary. The main focus of the book, however, is on his consulship at Smyrna, the most important centre of English trade in the eastern Mediterranean. Sonia Anderson explores the social backgrounds and varying fortunes of the resident merchants, factory officials, and visiting sea-captains, and examines the economic reasons for the success of this outpost of Restoration enterprise.
