A must have for any Cycad collector.......1999-12-09
This book is excellently illustrated and although many people prefer photos, it is very clear and usefull when identifying species. The author is giving a whealth of information on the different cycad species found in Africa. If you collect Encephalartos plants this book must be in your library! Read also Cycads of Central Africa by Peter Heibloem and Cycads of South Africa by Cynthia Giddy.

This book MUST be classified as a bible for Cycad lovers!.......1999-06-06
As a dedicated gardener and conservationist, this book, was written and put together, with what can only be described as a person, who not only knew her "product": but with love, passion and an awareness of the idiots out there like me. I feel so humble. The photographs are superb! Her 'lessons' to people like me, will remain with me for the rest of my life. R.I.P. Cynthia and thank you

Book Description
During the course of an exile that began in 1965, Cabrera Infante has taken part in each and every one of the controversies that have arisen since Fidel Castro took hold of Cuba. Mea Cuba recounts an event that has often repeated itself during the twentieth century: the story of yet another dictatorship that silences, represses, lies and murders; and the story of all the talented individuals that have been condemned in a battle of propaganda alive to this day. Key figures in the Island's tragedy and its literary world file through the pages of this book. Mea Cuba is the most important anthology on Cuban politics since José Martí's.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for Castro apologists.......2004-12-19
This collection of essays and short pieces by Guillermo Cabrera Infante was not only educational to me (in the sense that it introduced me to many of Cuba's top writers, poets and artists), but also eye opening in the way in which it opened yet another mental file to store away the immense brutalities that Castro has caused upon all segments of the Cuban population.
It is sad to read about the suicides of many of Castro's most heroic Revolutionary supporters (such as Yeye Santamaria), as well as broken poets and writers.
Guillermo Cabrera Infante's books drives home, like a nail being pounded into a hand, the brutal and malignant nature of Fidel Castro, equally distributed among friends and foes alike. It is a must read for students of Cuban history from the viewpoint of an insider.
Mea Cuba or the World's Guilt.......2001-11-24
In this book Cabrera Infante takes us by the hand through the history of Cuba, past and present, in a masterful way. As a growing teenager in Cuba myself in the sixties, I can "see" again all that happened in the beautiful island-archipelago from a richer, most understandable perspective than when I was there and saw things take place, but did not fully understand them: The witchhunt against all intellectuals who dared "think" what was not sanctioned by the totalitarian state and its main disease: Castroenteritis ! The repression against "hippies", "Beatle Lovers", homosexuals, singers and anyone who could challenge the Caribbean Nazi-Stalinism. (It made me remember my "underground" listening to the Beatles!).
An excellent, deep analysis of causes and consequences, of life in internal and external exile and very sharp chronicles about the lives of poets, writers, politicians and "men with many exes decorations", i.e. exminister, exambassador, exrevolutionary, experson, etc. Incredibly good use of the Spanish language, worthy of the prize Cabrera Infante recently earned: The Cervantes Prize of the Spanish language! I highly recommend this book for lovers of true history and of the Spanish language!

Customer Reviews:
An useful survey on strategies under uncertainty.......1999-12-04
Why shoudn't we read the original books on the subject, the uncertainty ? If we are managers under pressure and without sufficient time, a similar collection is really useful. Of course, some auctors should be considered in total(Hamel & Prahalad), but this book offers a good insight on the matter. And some explications about companies strategies (competition based on the innovation rythm, for instance, in the last article)

Just Dogs.......2001-02-08
My girlfriend and I purcahed a chocolate lab in May of 2000. This was my first dog. We searched long and hard and did a lot of research on how to choose the right pup... and we did. I had all intentions of training our new pup to be a champion hunter. I purchased many trainging items and spent many hours to make sure Bailey was going to be ready for the fall pheasant season. As the season grew closer so did the love for my new best friend. One of my co-workers at the time who also has a hunting a dog (a Llewyen Setter)gave me his copy of "Just Dogs" to read while I was away on buisness. As I strated to read the book, I couldn't put it down. After returning home, I ordered my own copy of it. It is probably one of the best bird dog books I have ever read. The more that I read the book the closer I feel to Bailey. He became my best friend the family pet and also a very good hunter. Through out the season Bailey and I were able to bag five birds (with the help of Sadie)which his first two I had mounted as a found reminder of a great day of hunting. The season has past I am sitting at home with about four feet of snow outside with my boy at my side and the MY copy of "Just Dogs" on my desk. When I get that itch and begin to think about the season to come, I begin to read the book all over again. I have probably ready the book cover to cover about five times since October of 2000. Every time I read the poems, I end up typing one of them up and framing it with a picture of my chocolate hunting partner. I recently purchased a copy of the book for my brother as a birthday present. My brother does not hunt but has two black labs, Coal and Chole, who mean the world to him. After reading "Just Dogs" he says that the book makes him feel even closer to his labs and makes him appreciate the friendship, loyalty and love that only a dog can bring. He thanks me all the time for the book and I have Gary to thank for lending me his copy along with a pheasant season that I will probably never forget. "Just Dogs" is worth every penny and more!!! You do not need to be a hunter to appreciate this book, you must possess a true love for just dogs.
Great gift for hunters who love their dogs.......2000-02-07
This is a really beautiful book, I bought it for my husband as a Valentine's day gift. It's light reading, just stories by hunters and a poem or two. The photographs are excellent, some will just make you chuckle out loud and others are simply beautiful. If you love a hunter, who loves his dog, this is a great gift. My husband enjoyed it immensely.
An evocative essay on dog's special relationship to man.......1999-10-31
Whether you have a dog (or dogs!) or just enjoy them, this book is the most touching portrait of the special relationship between mankind and its most faithful companion. From essays that make you laugh, to ones that will bring tears to you eyes, to the photographs that just warm you up inside, you will read this book more than once.

Book Description
The safety of the countless people depends on lighthouses. These sentinels from California to British Columbia are pictured and discussed historically in great detail by author Jim Gibbs. Dramatic vintage and color photos of stark coastal landscapes and many unavoidable shipwrecks are presented as part of the lighthouse story where human courage links all events. The lighthouse keepers are portrayed heroically while their jobs are gradually being phased out; this is the twilight of lighthouses' use for navigation.

Book Description
In this engaging history, Tamara Plakins Thornton traces handwriting in America from colonial times to the present. Exploring such subjects as penmanship pedagogy, handwriting analysis, autograph collecting, handwriting experts, and calligraphy revivals, Thornton investigates the shifting functions and meanings of handwriting, showing, for example, how it came to be linked with individual identity and how in our times handwriting reflects a nostalgia for the past and a rejection of modernity.
Book Description
This new biography includes interviews with the star himself, his family, co-stars and colleagues, and will reveal the real man behind the cool facade.
Customer Reviews:
Married, alot older than Russell Crowe, still love him.......2002-02-09
Book is very informative, ejoyable to read and made me want to see more of him in movies. I would love to know him. He has a depth, intelligence and sensitivity to his soul. Most celebrities don't effect me that way.
Just the facts...Russell Crowe 101.......2001-10-13
Usually when I read celebrity biographies, I don't know a whole lot about the person and want to know more. With this book, I bought it simply because I am a big fan of Russell Crowe's but wasn't expecting many new facts about someone I already feel I know quite a bit about. I found this to be true but it was an enjoyable read, nonetheless.
This book covers Crowe's life from his childhood in New Zealand and Australia, all the way through to his recent Academy Award victory and his most recent film, the Ron Howard-directed "A Beautiful Mind". I did like the authors' format of devoting an entire chapter to a single film or an aspect of Russell's life. If you're looking for information on a specific film, you can find the appropriate chapter immediately.
As a longtime fan who reads and collects articles and videotaped interviews from all over the world, my one main criticism is that the authors seemed to take most of their information and quotes directly from previous print and visual media. Now, I know this is an unauthorized biography; still, it would have been more interesting if they had possibly interviewed friends and co-stars themselves.
Still, they have painted what I feel is a fair, interesting portrait of a complex, intense man and a dedicated, talented actor. If you are a new Russell Crowe fan, this book will give you a lot of information, basic facts you'll want to know about him. If you're a longtime admirer, like myself, it won't tell you a whole lot you don't already know, but will be a good addition to your Crowe collection, anyway.

Russell Crowe Star Biographies.......2007-02-07
Love this book! Has good pictures of Russell and lots of good information about the star. Highly recommended!
Book Description
Winner of the Academy Award in 2001 for his performance in Gladiator and the Golden Globe in 2002 for his starring role in A Beautiful Mind, Russell Crowe is the hottest actor in movies today. The New Zealand-born, Australian-bred Crowe has attracted controversy with his high-profile love affairs, his open hostility toward the American news media, and his all-around eccentricity. This biography traces his career from rock 'n' roller (he still sings and plays guitar with his band, Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts) to Australian stage, film, and TV actor, to Hollywood star in movies such as L.A. Confidential and The Insider.
Customer Reviews:
Full of inaccuracies and speculations.......2005-02-15
Apart from some basic facts I already knew and rough descriptions of Russell Crowe's movies, that book contains only tons of inaccuracies and speculations, especially about how Russell Crowe was feeling and what he was thinking at certain times and situations in his life, even what Danielle was feeling in certain situations.
How does that guy know? He has obviously never spoken to Russ or Dani (he would have mentioned it if he had) and even though some things sound like they MIGHT be true, I don't buy most of what that guy wrote.
I don't remember all the details, of course - and I refuse to read that book again - but some of the things I remember as clearly wrong or totally speculative are:
- The author says Russ played the leading role in Brides of Christ. But he appears in that entire mini-series for only a few minutes.
- The author says Russell's opponent in The Crossing was a Robert Hanimone. But it was Robert Mammone.
- The author says Russell has always been insecure about his sexual orientation ("proof" of this, the author says, is that Russ didn't have a girlfriend before Dani, that he played a sexually ambiguous character in the Rocky Horror Show, and that he prefers playing movie characters who are insecure about their sexual orientation). This is complete nonsense.
- The author says Russell liked playing Nash so much, because he is also on the verge of being schizophrenic. "Proof" is that his parents have said he was always " a little crazy" as a child and that his sudden fits of rage can be explained by him being at least a little schizophrenic. This, too, is entirely speculative.
- The author says Russell has always hated his Maori heritage and still does. "Proof" of that, the author says, is that he was discriminated against in New Zealand because of his mixed blood, and that up to date, even though he speaks up against racism, he does not have any black friends and has never gotten involved in any activities to help minorities (or something like that, I don't recall the exact wording). How does the author know? Does he know all of Mr. Crowe's friends and all projects he is involved in?
Anyway, IMO the entire book contains mainly inaccuracies and speculations. There are other books out there who are much more accurate about Russell Crowe, his movies and his life.
Beware of the phsychology..........2004-03-16
How can the author spit out phsychological assessments on a person he has not personally interviewed? According to his analysis, any young teenage boy who is shy with girls and prefers the company of his "buddies" or ("mates") suffers from some type of sexual ambiguity??!! This seems to describe just about all the teenage boys I know...Better not tell my 14 year old son...Apart from this, the books is an easy read, nothing really new, just take it with a huge grain of salt...
Okay but not the best.......2004-02-28
While much of the information in this book is interesting, it's hard to know what to believe and what not to. When the author gets a simple, well-published, and easily verifiable, fact wrong - such as that Mel Gibson was born in Australia - Gibson wasn't; he was born in Rye, NY and moved to Australia as a child - you have to wonder how thorough his research about Crowe actually was. Also, the author's psychological 'insights' say more about the author than they do about Crowe. The book would have been much better without them, as they seem to point to a bias on the author's part rather than as true indicators of Crowe's thoughts, feelings, or reasoning. Watching Crowe's dedication and loyalty to not only his art, but also to his family and friends, tells one much more about the man than any unauthorized bio does, and does it better and with more truth. Get this book if you're a fan, but watch Crowe's movies and interviews, and listen to his music, if you really want the true story about the real Russell Crowe..
fantastic.......2003-06-19
this is a fantastic story of russell's overcoming and persaverance. i think russell is probably a genius. . . aren't many these days (santana, russell, and jim carrey to name a few.) particularly interesting was russell's early years, having recently survived what i think was probably SARS I felt i could relate with the idea of struggle. buy this book, you will thank me for it!
On target with Crowe.......2003-06-14
Here we go - another biography from James Dickerson, which means strap yourself in for quite a ride. Few, if any, biographers approach their subject with such sheer relentlessness as does this Mississippi-based author.
And now he's taking on the life of Russell Crowe, one of the most enigmatic, and talented actors working today. The author knows a good subject when he sees one and a good case could be make that he's caught Crowe's life when he's getting ready to leap into full-blown movie stardom.
We learn some things about Crowe we didn't know (his Maori ancestry), some things we'd heard about (his being a musician and a darned good one) and some things about him we know all too well (his, er, gruffness). It's a handsome book and if the author had packed any more detail into these 175 or so pages, you'd have to get help picking it up.
Some say biographies don't mean much unless you have the subject's cooperation. It looks like Dickerson disagrees and we should be grateful for his attitude about his work. Without fetters or favor we get probably as close to Russell Crowe as anyone ever will -- and maybe closer.
Bravo to the bio and to Russell Crowe for being his own man. Sometimes we need guys who throw punches - and biographies like this that refuse to pull them.
