Book Description
Since its original publication, Japanese Etiquette & Ethics in Business, the pioneering work on the subject, has been the standard guide for Westerners doing business with the Japanese--either here or abroad. In this new edition Boyd Lafayette De Mente, who has been living and working in Japan for more than twenty-five years, examines those characteristics that epitomize the Japanese character and business personality. De Mente explains how concepts from daily life extend to dealings in business and how loyalty to the family and nation applies to professional relationships as well.
Throughout this book De Mente offers invaluable advice to Westerners wishing to do business with the Japanese. In an all new chapter De Mente compares the Japanese and Western approaches to business pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of each. This is the one book on Japanese business structure and practices that offers explanations for what appears to many foreigners to be confusing and contradictory behavior by their Japanese counterparts. As part of a rationale for Japan's economic achievements, De Mente has formulated "Japan's Five Commandments for Success," which he presents here for the first time. No other hook is as informative about the cultural factors that shape business practices in Japan. The insights that De Mente has gathered as the results of his long experience in Japan are presented on every page. No one who goes East with the intention of doing business with the Japanese should do so without first consulting Japanese Etiquette & Ethics in Business.
"I am delighted to see this revised and expanded edition of a book that has become something of a classic over the decades. Boyd De Mente's long experience in Japan . . . has given him a keen insight into the cultural factors that shaped and still control management practices in Japan."
-- Yasutaka Sai, Vice President International Japan Management Association
"This book is 'must' reading for anyone with even a marginal interest in Japan and Japanese business."
-- William K. Nickoson, President Asia Dynamics (Japan) Ltd.
"Until foreign businesspeople fully understand and learn how to cope with the cultural factors underlying Japanese society, particularly such elements as discrimination and egotism, they will not be able to understand or work effectively with the Japanese. Boyd De Mente's Japanese Etiquette & Ethics in Business provides the basis for this understanding, along with practical advice on bridging cultural differences."
-- John Artise, Vice President Drake Beam Morin, Inc.
Customer Reviews:
More useful for doing business *in* Japan.......2002-12-30
Content: DeMente seems to know what he's talking about (this author was recommended to me by an instructor in Chinese culture). Although I've dealt with Japanese business people for many years, I've not been to Japan, and therefore have no basis to completely judge the book's content. Based on what I do know, though, this book is best read as instruction in how to deal with Japanese business people when doing business *in Japan* (as opposed to doing business with Japanese companies and their representatives in the U.S.).
Structure: Overly repetitive, poorly structured and in some places, clearly outdated. The last criticism is to be expected given the dramatic change of status Japan has undergone in the past decade. The first two criticisms might be ameliorated by two factors: One, my own preferences are certainly playing a large role here. I prefer to have information delivered in a logical (to me) and concise manner. This is especially true for an instructive book -- one would expect creative writing to contain flourishes. Two, perhaps this *is* creative writing, and DeMente is showing the reader what dealing with a Japanese mindset is really like.
Japanese Ethics and Business.......2002-10-13
This is one of the best books I have read on Japanese Business and Ethics. The author gives an explanation on the character of the japanese. Explains the differences between doing business the japanese way and the western way.The author gives a history of the japanese and gives stories on how the japanese think and act. You will gain so much knowledge from this book about the japanese. I will recommend this book to anyone that is going to do business in Japan or with the japanese in their own country. A must read.
Effective Use of Stories.......2002-10-03
Not only is the author knowledgable about the topic, but I like the manner in which he makes his points through real life anacdotes. I use the same technique in my book: The Constant-Sum Approach to Business Success".
This is a must read book for people doing business in Japan........1997-07-11
Superficially, Japan and the US are quite similar: In their cities, there are tall modern buildings, well dressed people hurrying to appointments while talking on cellular phones as well as the hustle and bustle of any large Western city. These similarities will seduce nearly every American who seeks to do business in Japan into thinking that the business practices of the country will be the same as in the US. The truth is that the cultural differences are so vast and subtle that they are often beyond the comprehension of the majority Americans. In Japan, there is a high expectation of a certain standard of business etiquette and failure to achieve this standard could doom any hopes of doing business in that country. And, unfortunately, many Americans, unknowingly, are unable to avoid this pitfall.
The Japanese language is rich with expressions that conceptualize certain feelings or attitudes that are literally very foreign to Westerners but are key to the Japanese way of seeing things. De Mente's explanations of these phrases and sayings are both useful vocabulary lessons as well as effective insights into the Japanese business mentality.
When my friends ask me for advice on conducting business in Japan, I regularly refer them to this book for a quick heads-up on business etiquette and ethics prior to their visit. Without exception, everyone reported that the book gave them the additional perception and savvy that was especially helpful in understanding and dealing with their Japanese counterparts.
In addition to giving basic insight on the how-to's of doing business in Japan, De Mente's book could a valuable primer for our diplomats and trade representatives who seek to improve relations with our important Asian neighbor.
I have read many books on this topic and have found none to have the depth and the richness as this one. After reading this book, one will naturally seek additional information in De Mente's many other books on this subject. Even if you are able to afford a cultural consultant to dispense expensive advice you will find Japanese Etiquette and Ethics in Business to be a thoughtfully written handbook that gives much insight into the ways of doing business in that country.
Book Description
Japanese Business Culture and Practices: A Guide to Twenty-first Century Japanese Business presents valuable insight on the proper ways to conduct business in Japan. It focuses on the principles of Japanese culture that influence business-related behavior, including the ways Japanese executives develop loyalty among workers. Drawing on their practical real-life experiences, authors Jon P. Alston and Isao Takei describe not only how Japanese work, entertain, make decisions, and use language in unique ways, but they also offer practical advice on how to work for and with Japanese. The combination of cultural facts and extensive descriptions of behavior provide an easy-to-understand guide to conducting business in contemporary Japan. Because the Japanese are loyal to those they trust and respect, foreigners will gain respect and facilitate success by knowing and adhering to the minutiae of Japanese social etiquette and business protocols. From advice on how to avoid cultural misunderstandings to the proper techniques for negotiations, Japanese Business Culture and Practices is your guide to forming productive work relationships the "Japanese way."

Doing Business with Japanese Men.......2004-08-30
Contains a great deal of information that may or may not be useful to anyone, male or female, doing business in Japan depending on the situation. Everything should be taken with a grain of salt. Seems to be focused on people in relatively large companies doing business with relatively large companies. Would have been enhanced by a thorough editing by someone familiar with Japan and things Japanese as it is marred by some obvious mistakes. Statements about "tea leaves" and "cookies" being used in a tea ceremony, "peanut sauce" being one of the two common sauces used in the shabu shabu dish, etc. make one wonder about the veracity of other statements.
Prepare for the worst! Japan is still male-dominated society.......1999-12-28
As a Japanese businesswoman working for some 20 years, I believe this book will help a lot for those women doing business with Japanese men. Especially those who are new to Japan. Unfortunately, Japanese business world is still male-oriented, and most of Japanese businessmen don't know how to deal with women in business. One of the Japanese businesswomen's complaints is, "Japanese men treat business women only in three manners. Treat them as their wives, daughters, or hostesses at the night bars. They just don't know how to treat them as a collogue or business partnerĀc" This book consists of actual experiences of many foreign women and how they dealt with. Those experiences are no exaggeration from my eyes. It will be a good preparation to know what you may confront in Japan.
Good.......1999-10-13
The title may ward of half of the population, and that is unfortunate. There are lots of great points that apply to business etiquette in general and are not unique to "women doing buisness" in Japan. The author implies that the foreign woman should take every advantage of her feminin charms on the helpless Japanese Industry, I would only suggest common sense.
Disappointing.......1999-05-10
I was so excited to see this title when I was sent to Tokyo (with 2 American men) on very short notice! I read this book cover-to-cover in preparation. When I got to Tokyo, I was surprised to experience a much more contemporary, advanced culture than had been described. For example, the attire suggestions were completely wrong (and sometimes contradictory). You won't go wrong with classic American business attire. I found that by paying close attention to your Japanese counterparts' mannerisms, being slightly more aggressive than usual (I live in NYC, that may be much more aggressive than I think!), and having someone well-respected introduce you to whomever you will be working with will be very helpful. It also would have been useful to learn more about the Japanese tendency to agree with you, when they really don't understand what you're talking about!
A must-have for any woman doing business with the Japanese.......1998-07-25
A friend loaned me this book, and within minutes, I knew I had to have a copy for myself. Particularly useful for the female executive, this book covers how to establish your authority (and how to handle Japanese men who ignore you and insist on talking to your male subordinates), how to dress, socializing, gift giving, the business card rituals, where the power seat is in the conference room, how to handle inappropriate behavior and sticky situations, communication and correspondence protocol, and numerous other subjects. I am appalled to discover how many mistakes I have made in my business relationships with Japanese companies, but now am sufficiently enlightened to avoid many in the future. If you are female and do business with the Japanese, whether in Japan or in your home country, you must have this book.

Book Description
Children and animals share a deep emotional, powerful and meaningful bond. Animals, especially beloved pets, become playmates, study partners, work partners and ultimately, friends. From their relationships with pets and other animals, children experience comfort, compassion, patience, mutual respect and feelings of interconnectedness with the world around them. In her new colorfully and beautifully illustrated book, Animal Companions: Your Friends, Teachers & Guides certified Grief Recovery Specialist Diane Pomerance Ph.D. offers inspiring insights of the effects of child-animal bonds while re-enforcing to children the uplifting nature of the cycle of life.
Animal Companions: Your Friends, Teachers & Guides affirms the importance of people-animal relationships while helping children to identify and express their strong feelings of shared bonds with their animal friends such as companionship, trust, acceptance, understanding and devotion. Dr. Pomerance guides children through the realization of these feelings and the process of creating and sustaining a relationship with a pet and how to cope with the knowledge that the much-loved pet will eventually pass on by emphasizing time spent together should be treated as a gift and a privilege.
Creatively illustrated by artist Vanessa Meier and filled with quotes chosen to emphasize to children the important bonds of love and loyalty between themselves and pets, Dr. Pomerance has created an insightful book that brings to light both the joy of animal ownership and the heartache felt when an animal companion dies.
Animal companionship teaches children many important lessons concerning compassion and the responsibility people have to provide for and protect animals. Children learn the breadth of human emotion, from joy and sorrow, success and failure, to peace and understanding through their relationship with animals.
In a moving, considerate and understanding voice, Animal Companions: Your Friends, Teachers & Guides encourages children to identify their feelings of connectedness with animals by fostering relationships with animals and focusing on "living in the moment" by enjoying each day with their pet and remembering the most important gift of life is love.
A portion of the proceeds from sales of Animal Companions: Your Friends, Teachers & Guides will be donated to the SPCA of Texas, where Pomerance heads the SPCA's Pet Grief Counseling Program and support group that meets monthly.

The role of pets in civilization.......2006-11-20
I lived on an acreage for eleven years and had cows, ducks, chickens, pigs, geese, turkeys, cats, dogs and even a goat as pets. Since that time, my pets have been fish and cats. It is a colossal understatement to say that you learn a great deal from your pets. You find that they are very smart and often have an incredible memory for detail. They also provide us so much comfort, there is something incredibly relaxing about having a cat curl up in your lap and take a nap.
In this book, Pomerance describes the joys of having a pet, the companionship, acceptance and tolerance they have for us. They give us a sense of purpose, which is perhaps the purpose for which nature intended them. In fact, it can be argued that one of the first actions that led to the development of civilization was when dogs were domesticated to aid in the hunt. With their keen sense of smell, it became impossible for large predators to ever successfully approach a human encampment from upwind. Their fierce loyalty and bravery no doubt did a great deal to aid in the early phases of the increase in human population.
Written and illustrated at the level of an elementary school child, this book demonstrates all of the wonders, joys and advantages of having a pet. The duty and responsibilities of having a pet are also explained.
Tribute to our Pets.......2006-03-04
ANIMAL COMPANIONS is a very nice quick read for anyone who loves animals and considers them family members. Actually it is a great read for friends and family members of animal lovers who really don't understand the bond four legged critters forge with their two legged guardians. I found it to be very insightful.

lovely watercolored ramblings.......2004-10-25
Slow, gentle, pensive, and occasionally very funny, Des seems to be someone who would make a true and open friend. I enjoyed this read in my own sweet time, nipping off bites here and there while I had afternoon tea or just before bedtime reading.
I start with the word slow - not as a criticsm - far from it, but as a description of the unfolding paragraphs that draw you into an event or garden scene. Without pouring bucket after bucket of Words over your head the author bares his passion and pain in his garden. I can identify with many of the triumphs and failures, but I also think a nongardener who enjoys biographies of real people going about their real lives would enjoy this in the same way I can read of racehorse stables without ever wanting to own one.
Des Kennedy has a sound grasp of the English language and, except for the very rare overworked sentence, he plays with words as joyfully and freely as an artist does with watercolors. In his chapter 'Ever So Blue' he made me hunger for blue as if I had been starved, writing down names and looking them up, even becoming a tad anxious in case my garden be denied anchusa due to availability or climate.
In case you've been disapointed in other garden biographies, try this one, while gentle and lyrical, it is not a hard slog.

There are 21 famous friends who have lent their feelings in their own words about Bob Hope inclulding Rhonda Fleming, Connie Haines, Ann Jillian, Kathryn Crosby, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Patty Andrews, Shirley Jones, Sid Caesar and others. This is the book Bob Hope fans have been waiting for for 20 years.
Customer Reviews:
Bob and Richard, What a Combo.......2007-01-20
Boy, this is the best of the Hope books, and I've read them all. The photos are amazing and the book is a virtual encylopedia of information on one of America's best entertainers, the unselfish traveler who enterained our troops in every war since WW2. If you like Bob Hope, get this book and you will get to know Leslie Townes Hope as well as I do. Five Stars for this one. Honest.
Fantastic Book! Well written!.......2007-01-05
Bob Hope has always been a favorite of me and my family. Bob Hope, the unselfish celebrity who entertained our troops in every war from World War II through the Vietnam War, dispensing songs, comedy and always brought along beautiful girls, all to help boost their morale. Richard Grudens book The Spirit of Bob Hope is the best of the Hope books because it covers every aspect of his career from his vaudeville days through his Broadway appearances, his great radio shows and his television specials. Also covered well is his association with Bing Crosby and those seven classic Road Shows, which are also narrated by Mr. Grudens in the special feature section of the DVD Tributes. The book features original comments from contemporaries and associates like Charlton Heston, Frances Langford, John Steinbeck, Rhonda Fleming, Doris Day, Sid Caesar, Jane Russell, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, Rosemary Clooney,Tony Bennett, Shirley Jones, Ann Jillian and Les Brown, among many others. The opening contains a tribute prayer from his friend, Billy Graham. The Spirit of Bob Hope is clearly a wonderful tribute to a wonderful performer who was loved and who will be missed. This book is the Bob Hope Bible to keep on your shelf. The book is interspersed with over 100 terrific photos at strategic places in the book, many never before published, and the words to songs introduced by him over the years-the best of which is "Thanks for the Memory." A first -rank Bob Hope book. It get five stars from me.
Don't Waste Your Money.......2006-12-07
I read this book in one sitting, not because it was good, but because there is so little in it. There is no insight to the man, only a smattering of personal details. Did contain a lot of photos and which made it more of a scrapbook than anything else. Nothing new at all.
Homage to a truly great and enduringly popular comedian.......2002-07-11
Written especially to commemorate Bob Hope's 100th birthday, The Spirit Of Bob Hope is a meaningful and informative biography that ranges from his birth in England, to his youthful career as a professional boxer, to his long and talented journey toward becoming a vaudeville, stage, movie, television icon. Personal testimonies and tributes from fellow celebrities, in their own words, enhance this welcome tribute to a great entertainer and citizen. Over 100 black-and-white photographs illustrate this biographical homage to a truly great and enduringly popular comedian, a true icon of twentieth century American popular culture.
BOB HOPE IS THE BEST.......2001-12-24
Richard Grudens once again does a teriffic job of writing and displaying a mans life in great fashion. As an avid collector of all music memorabilia and a musician, I am very humbled by this wonderful presentation of Bob Hope. I'm only a 24 year old guy, and in my time I have not seen a single man do so much in a lifetime of all the people I know and know of. I remember all the good Bob Hope did being at the USO shows for our troops and watching the reruns of the Bob Hope and Bing Crosby movies with my dad. My dad is also a huge fan of Bob Hope and all the old timers stuff, so we say(that would be coming from a young person like myself). This book belongs on the library shelves as a reference to Bob Hope. ---- an instant classic ----
