Appear to be some math errors in this book.......2002-05-08
I find this book to be well organized and easy to read. There is a great deal of useful material that does not go over anyone's head.
I think there are some math errors - I looked mostly in the CAPITAL BUDGETING chapter. On page 328, the present value of 3.3073 should be 3.0373 with disasterous results.
On page 348, the formulae for Standard Deviation appear to be totally wrong. Frankly I am amazed by these errors and they put most of the of math the book into serious question. I didn't continue into this chapter after this as I no longer trust the math - so beware and check for yourself.
This is unfortunate - except for some simple yet devastating errors, I like the book a great deal. Just too bad.
Complete Accounting Guide.......2001-05-29
This book was not only helpful with creating our companies budget, but it went into complete detail of every day functions our company should be performing. It outlined who should be responsible for what aspects of not only the budget but for daily, weekly, and monthly reports. The book was complete with diagrams and easy to follow samples. It was an easy read besides. The book has become part of our reference library.

A good addition to your terrier bookshelf........2001-12-26
Although this book may not be the definitive earthdog book, it's a definite "buy" for your shelf. If you own an earthdog, you should own this book. And, if you own an earthdog, find an earthdog test in your area and go -- your dog will love you for it!
A fireside read, but it won't help you in the field........1998-12-01
While this book contains lots of history and general information there is very little for the enthusiast ready to start training their dog. The few chapters devoted to actually working your dog, contain little more information that the official rule book. I was looking for a resource to help me start training my dogs and setting up tunnels. I was very dissapointed. This book was not worth the cost, nor the (relativly small) amount of time it took to read it.
An entertaining and informative read.......1998-05-21
Mario Migliorini has succeeded in raising his subject beond the level of a techniques and methods manual and instead has produced a highly entertaining and readable book. His easy open style and homespun anecdotes provide a facinating insite into the social origins of the ground dogs. A well researched and illustrated book, the section on hunting in the UK is a particular treat. Hard to put down, this book is worth a browse by anyone and is a must for Terrier enthusiasts.

Should be called the Coffee Table Encyclopedia of Gardening.......2007-03-10
I am so impressed with this big, beautiful book! The photos are inspiring, and the technical aspects are thoroughly covered. I love the historic background of each vegetable and herb.
I think there is literally everything I ever needed to know about vegetable gardening from seed germination, through care and feeding, to harvest. Detailed charts outline fertilizer, pests, water, soil conditions, and planting and harvest times.
I keep it on my coffee table and flip through it daily just to enjoy the photos and learn some new fact.
You will not be disappointed with this book!
Gardners Dictionary.......2006-10-31
I am a new gardener and this book has helped so much! I look everything up in it. RIght down to problems with plant to how much water each plant gets. It has a guide to all plants and great pictures. Also has tips for gardening.
Well Organized, Comprehensive, Excellent Layout.......2002-08-14
Burpee's "The Complete Vegetable and Herb Gardener: A Guide to Growing Your Garden Organically" is fantastic. In addition to what Burpee lists on the back cover of what is inside the book, there are also many easy-reading tables that contain excellent information such as the vitamin(s) that each vegetable contains, different cultivars, plant PH needs, watering needs per week, crop yields, etc. Many interesting tidbits.
The layout is so wonderful, one does not feel overwhelmed with all of the information that is in the book!
Vegatable Gardening Made Really Easy.......2001-11-02
Very similar in content and structure to Ortho's Complete Guide to Vegtables. The difference comes in the experience the writer has growing and maitaining the various plants. I find using both books gives different perspectives for growing and caretaking of plants but conatins the same basic information. For instance the Ortho book has better Garden Setup and maintenance data, and raw data on the various gardening aspects like fertilizer and pest eradiction. The Burpee book focuses on plant and cultivar details a little better. The book is filled with plenty high quality pictures of plants and their fruits using multiple pictures of various cultivars within plant families.
The book is geared for both beginners in gardening and the handy do it yourselfer types. Chapters progress you through the steps from site selection and plant selection to harvesting, crop rotating and soil conditioning over winter and indoor greenhouse seed starting. The book also contains references to various cultivars within vegtable species, so a beginner gardener could not only successfully select and grow well know vegtables, but could also grow and use the odd often hard to find fresh herbs.
I consistently flip between both this book and Ortho's book. I find using them in this manner makes the information extracted complimentary and thorough.

Beautiful & inspiring.......2003-04-25
"I want to plant a herb garden!"
That's how I felt after reading this book!
I learnt that herbs are beautiful, useful & so colorful, yet they are easy to grow.
The book shows many pictures so you know how the herbs look & how to arrange them. It also introduces other herbs that you may have forgotten about. The book chapters make it easy & helpful to look through, chapters such as: herbs that seed, salads, tea, silver colored herbs, flowering, scented etc.
At the end there are tips on planting, freezing & drying. Also a few herb recipes that look delicious, but I haven't tried them yet.
All in all a beautiful book to look at

Book Description
Funny and gentle, John Candy was loved by millions of movie fans for playing ture-to-life characters. Whether as the irrepressible bon vivant in Splash, the misunderstood slob in Uncle Buck, or the generous lonely salesman in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, John Candy struck a perfect balance between self-deprecating humor and irresistible, emotional warmth. But behind the scenes, beneath the booming laughter, award-winning journalist Martin Knelman paints a compassionate portrait of john Candy--a man blessed by comic genius and goodness of heart who was ultimately an sadly undermined by self-doubt and misguided ambition.
Customer Reviews:
A disappointment.......2005-04-22
This book seems to be the only one I can find having to do with John Candy, so I can't abandon it completely until something better comes along.
I'll save the book from a one-star rating because it is mildly enjoyable to learn about the life of the man, but the faults of the book outweigh its merits.
For instance, the author likes to annoy with his insistence on getting his fill of being a movie critic and putting down virtually every film/tv show John Candy appeared in, with the exception of "SCTV" and "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles." Instead of giving us insight into the making of the films, he seems to have more fun telling the reader how bad they are, and his opinion of the acting of the rest of the cast. There is nothing here for movie purists; as mentions of life on the set are limited to phrases of how everybody loved John and so forth. Good for reminiscing, but not for reading.
Second, the author is too heavyhanded in parts. While Candy's childhood is hardly referenced, nor is his family life; long-winded anecdotes about his business dealings with Wayne Gretzky and Bruce McNall, former owner of the LA Kings (NHL) occupy much of the book. Those familiar with Candy's films and not his early television work will feel shut-out at the beginning, as it is obvious the author is partial to the latter rather than the former. There is a frustrating lack of balance to the flow of story, particularly at the end. It seems as if the author wearied of writing about Candy and finished rather quickly, as the conclusion of the book felt stale and hollow. Scant sentences after passages on Candy's death go by, and the book has come to an end. Disappointing when it took so long to finish the introduction.
To further infuriate, the quotes taken from personal friends and fellow actors seem to have been lifted heavily from magazines and other sources, rather than anything from the author's own sweat and blood. Although put together in a satisfactory fashion, one cannot help but wish for deeper commentary and juicier gossip than this book only touches on. For all its talk about "deep, hidden sadness," this book fails to deliver on anything "deep."
An OK Biography.......2004-02-23
All in all, I thought this was a pretty decent book. Even though the author doesn't speak much of John Candy's childhood, there is a lot about how he rose to becoming a star. The only things that I don't like in this book are:
1. The author always spells words like "Honor" and "Favorite" like this: Honour; Favourite.
2. The author acts like too much of a critic. He seems to have something against John Hughes and kind of makes him out to be a bad movie maker. He makes certain films like Ferris Beuler's Day Off and Uncle Buck seem like bad movies. He also says something like the Great Outdoors is a ripoff of National Lampoons Vacation. But the only thing those two films have in common is that they involve a family on a vacation and everything goes wrong, and that John Candy appeared in both of them.
Other than that, this book was alright.
A fascinating book.......2003-06-05
I really liked this book and in fact, couldn't put it down. I read it in one sitting. Martin Knelman did an excellent job in documenting what was really a very sad story. I grew up in Toronto and was a fan of John Candy, watching his career from the earliest days of SCTV. I found this book to be a very accurate and an interesting historical review of the Canadian TV and media industry. Candy clearly made an amazing number of poor career choices but was also taken advantage of by many people in the show business industry which is unfortunate. This book would make a good movie.
Do not waste your time.......2000-01-24
This book is about twice as long as it needs to be. It is way too wordy and lacks depth. I read two to three books per week and usually pass on my used books to others. When I completed reading this one I literally threw it in the trash. What a waste of money and time!
Candy's life about hardships and with a complex problem!.......1999-07-28
John Candy's story is told in this penetrating biography tells about the off-screen comedians self complex and troubled problems with his weight and alcoholism, and his smoking that gained him over 300 pounds. And with his deeply rooted anxieties about his success, money and his self-worth. But above all that on-screen Candy was a funny, gentle, soft-hearted and affable also loved by millions of television & movie fans for playing characters who almost always conveyed much of the real man. Like "SCTV" where Candy's skecth characters came up to Mayor Tommy Shanks, Johnny LaRue and Stan Shmenge. And his best remebered known film roles like "Uncle Buck", "Plane Trains and Automobiles", "Splash" and "Cool Runnings". This is a tale of a comedian at war with his greatest instrument and a riveting portrait of a man's battle with his private demons!
