Cannabis sativa has been called the world's most versatile plant. Materials made from hemp fiber have been discovered in tombs dating back to before 7000 BC. During the Middle Ages hemp was used to treat fevers, insomnia, and malaria. In a well-written and researched book, Spectre provides a good understanding of the trends impacting retailing and how those changes in retailing impacts our society as a whole. The book is written in three parts - part one providing the background and history of major companies defined as category killers (includes the Walmarts, kmarts, borders, etc and Starbucks!). Here the information contained, though well presented, is essentially nothing new. If this is your first book on retail industry, there is much to be gained from the first part which provides a succinct summary on the origins of the major players in retail industry. You will learn snippets such as Borders was originally part of Kmart and so on...Part two talks more on the trends impacting the industry and how it has evolved, while the third part provides some insights on how things will emerge from now.... The discussions from Chapter 7 onwards is very insightful and provides a good account of what can be expected from the reatiling giants. Discussion on how the companies try to expand to non-US markets and analysis on some of the failures (HomeDepot in Europe, for example) is particularly engaging and informative.
Overall, the book provides a reasonably good account of the future, an excellent analysis of current trends, and a decent summary of the background. Written in fairly simple language and style, the author manages to keep it entertaining and engaging. A good read.

The Current Retailing Revolution, Not the First/Not the Last.......2004-12-10

Recently I needed a set of tires. I made the rounds of the traditional tire chains in my small town. The quotes from the three stores were just about identical at $600. I went to WalMart -- $400. Same mileage guarantee, same 'we fix flats and rotate,' and a warranty that was truly nationwide. Please explain why I shouldn't have bought the tires I needed at WalMart.

Category Killers are those giant specialized stores that are wiping out the competition in the areas in which they have chosed to compete. Toy-R-Us for instance has basically wiped out the KB toy chain that had before done a lot to wipe out the mom & pop toy stores. Category Killers operate in many, if not most, of the traditional specialty marketing area. You know their names PetSmart, Barnes & Noble, Home Depot, and many more. This has created a change in the way we shop, the way taxes are collected, the way producers market and position their products.

Of late there is some backlash against the big stores, particularily WalMart as it's the biggest, some towns don't want them, some lawsuits have been files, the INS has raided a few stores for using illegal workers. But $600 over here, $400 over there.

Category killers are what's happening in retail, to the dismay of many, and to the benefit of consumers. In this book Mr. Spector uses his background in retailing to examine the current revolution in retail -- yes, it's just the current revolution, there have been many before such as the construction of malls, and to make some predictions about the future of retail and the consumer culture.

For what it's worth, I think he is dead right.

Not worth it.......2003-04-19

I am also a beginner in the hobby. This book has very limited info. If you are interested in the fish that are in the book, it might be worth it. Doesn't cover very many fish either. There isn't any info on what fish is compatable with the fish that they are talking about. It does say the temperment of the fish or how many fish to keep together, but if the different types of fish aren't compatable, what difference does it make how many you have ?? Many better books out there !!

Essential for beginners!.......2002-10-23

Being a beginner aquarist myself, I found this book to be brilliant. It has a few pages on general fish information, as well as an explanatory book outline in the beginning. A page per fish information follows this. Each page on a particular fish has the following information: Large color photo, General information, Size of fish, Compatibility issues if they exist, Breeding habits, Origin. It also has a section indicating the ideal aquarium set-up for each fish that includes the following: Water quality, Temperature, Food, Number per tank, Minimum tank size. I found this book very helpful in choosing my fish and realizing the importance of compatibility. You would need to do some extra research, but the book is essential for beginners!

I have found this book to be extremely useful and I would recommend it to anyone (expert or amateur)who is interested in finding out more about the flowers. It is really quite easy to use and has helped me already to identify several plants that I have been wanting information on for years.

A Good Field Guide.......2003-12-28

Long overdue there is finally a good pocket guide available for those interested in the plants of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Although the author has not produced an exhaustive listing of all species, she has done an excellent job of producing a more than adequate listing of both the common, and the less common plants found here. The descriptions are adequate, and the scattered vignettes add extra interest for those who want a little more than a dry description of the plants themselves. The photography is good and makes identification easy. I really like the idea of arranging by colour, for the amateur and casual observer this makes life very simple. Although a book of flowers, sufficient foliage is photographed to allow for identification when out of bloom. There are some minor "typos", as expected in a first edition of this type, but numbering less than 20 they are not sufficient to detract from the rest of the book. The size makes it extremely user friendly and easy to carry around. I would highly recommend this book to both the amateur and professional alike.

A Somewhat Useful But Confusing Guide.......2003-11-12

Many photos in this guide are out-of-focus with shallow depth-of-field (but some are excellent). One photo (Bahama Stopper) was printed upside down. Others (Fleabane; Pencil Flower) seem to have been taken with total indifference. The photo of Wild Cotton is of an aged, faded flower and that of Cork Tree is not fully open. Although the book is advertised as "comprehensive" it actually covers fewer than 180 species of a total flora of over 1,350 species. Sadly, the author chose to include such invasive exotic species as Australian Pine, Mahoe, Cork Tree, and even Royal Poinciana, a native of Madagascar. The Bahamas are rich with unique native species along with many endemics, so including exotic species when there is such limited space in the book is disappointing. The reader will also be confused by the botanical names listed in parantheses following each species, which make one believe that they are botanical synonyms when they are, in fact, separate species. In the case of Brasiletto, the first botanical name is Caesalpinia bahamensis yet the photo is of Caesalpinia reticulata, the third (of four) species listed. There are also a number of misspellings, such as Caesalpinia bondoc for C. bonduc, Pinus caribbaea for Pinus caribaea, Dondonaea for Dodonaea, Scaveola for Scaevola, and Extosema for Exostema. At least one common name (Allamanda) was misspelled (as Alamanda). Also, many of the botanical names are long-ago outdated. The text accompanying each species will be useful to novice wildflower enthusiasts and those interested in bush medicine of the Bahamas but, overall, the book does not do the flora of the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos much justice.

Great Stuff on Plants in Belize.......2003-01-11

This little book provides excellent photos and short descriptions of native and non-native plants in Belize. Thus, Mangoes & More is one of "the" books to buy if you are going to Belize and interested to learn more about local fruit trees and flowers. Or if you are like me and just like to read neat little books about plants in different places in the world and this one has really great pictures to help you recognize the plants. I highly recommend it.

If you are looking for a coffee table book with lots of glossy pictures, this book is not for you. However, if you are looking for a comprehensive study on the history, breeding, and ecology of this tribe, this is the book for you. As for myself, I thoroughly enjoyed my first trip through it and I love having it on the shelf as a reference.

Yoga in real life.......2007-05-12

I am not sure what I expected, but I was pleasantly pleased by A Memoir with Yoga. It was interesting to read about her life - but even more interesting was how well she described the asanas. I have a new approach to some of them (remembering her giggles at the cat and dog poses - and that some yoga is FUN), and will concentrate on moving into a pose with her words in my mind. I learned more about yoga from the book than expected, and it was a joy to read.

Like the reader from Raynham, MA, I am not the slightest bit interested in yoga and skipped over those parts. But the other sections were worth reading -- especially the parts about her eating disorder! Before she got the implants, I always admired and envied Mariel's figure, especially the way she looked in Personal Best, and had assumed that she was just naturally athletic. I suppose I shouldn't have been shocked to learn that, like so many celebrities, she had to starve and endanger her health to look like that. And the stuff about her mixed-up family was very interesting, too -- though sad. I also enjoyed the stuff about Woody Allen.

Heartwarming insight into the experiences of one cool lady. I admit to following Mariel's (and Margaux') career since before "Lipstick" and I read the book in one session. Very touching, and Mariel really lays a lot of personal pain and joy bare for us to see. A great book for anyone juggling family problems, a difficult adolescence, food demons, and facing adversity. I sure hope the future is kind to Mariel and her family.

I loved this book! Mariel opens her heart to her readers and lays it all on the line. I identified with her and was able to learn some new methods for handling some areas of my life that parallel hers. This is a wonderful and sincere book!

I hope that in the future she writes a book on yoga and that she writes another book where this one left off.

I just met the author and the illustrator of this book at a local bookstore. Annie, Max's sister was also there, but Max was too dirty to come. The book is well written, and the illustrations are enjoyable. I read this book to a 3rd-grade class today (I'm a substitute teacher), and they enjoyed it. They laughed at several points, especially when Max rolled in fresh horse poop. I recommend it for 2nd grade through 5th grade. This book is a self-published book, but that does not mean that it is lacking in quality. Sandra Phillipson (the author) chose the self-publishing route mainly because she wanted Robert Takatch (the illustrator) to illustrate it, and she was afraid if she went through a publisher, she would lose that option. He knows these dogs and has done a nice job of conveying their personalities through his artwork. I tried to give this book 4 and a half stars instead of 4.

My kids love this book! We met the author at a book signing and saw both this book and her other about their other dog, Annie. It is a great book that will make you and your kids howl out loud. These books are great - the other is Annie loses her leg but finds her way and is very special. Your kids will love these books and the illustrations in them.

I think this book is cool. It's a book of mystery and humor. At first I thought it was going to be about a goose stealing a donut but it ended out to be that the goose was trying to take the statue. This book is cool. I recommend it to kids of any age. Its a funny book and you will want to read it over and over and still find it funny and mysterious.

It's Detective Donuts birthday, and they call him for a case becuase Professor Drake was missing. The goose was not Professor Drake's assistant. His birthday present was not what he subspected. This children's book is perfect for people who like mysteries mixed with humor.

Very Punny!.......2004-07-26

The illustrations in this book reveal the truth about what Detective Donut's package really
contains, who the Professor's assistant really is, and who really deserves the credit for
catching the criminal. Children will love knowing more about the action than does the
main character himself. This book may help students appreciate and pay more attention to
illustrations. It is also a good introduction to some commonly used idioms. Mouse's self-
satisfied humbleness is in marked contrast with Donut's foolish pride. Readers will have a
great time while learning these lessons.
