Useful guide - if you live close to the rides described.......2003-07-17

The book is useful, and provides good insights into the rides described if you happen to live close to a number of rides. There are two considerations that make the book less useful than it should be.

First, the rides, as the title suggests, are short - some are less than 10 miles. Second, since Connecticut is a large state, you can expect to be a very substantial distance from any particular ride. While it might be worth it to drive 50-100 miles to participate in a bike trip of 50 miles, if the bike trip is only 10 miles, then the drive doesn't necessarily seem worth it.

Even The Beginner Can Follow It.......2000-08-30

This book is great for anyone who wants to go out for a short Bike ride in the morning or evening or anytime. The instructions to get to a riding route are easy enough to follow that a person can usually find the route without a map, Although it is always good to have one. The book gives sites to see along the routes, as well as difficulty, Safety, and a detailed map with text describing what to do with all 36 routes. All in all a good book for any one who wants to go for a short, scenic bike ride in Connecticut.

Never Traded Before? Good Place to Start.......2007-03-31

This book is a FANTASTIC first book to read about commodities trading. Will it show you how to develop a Chart? NO. Will it teach you how to feel a market? NO. Will it give you the skills to begin trading as a beginner, paper trading or otherwise? NO. But what it will do, and it is a fantastic book for this... It will give the reader, especially a novice/beginner or a person who is interested in exploring "commodities" trading a good base of knowledge, in a simple and uncomplicated way. It will make clear what trading is, what are the ground rules, how it works in theory, and what you will need to do and emulate, to see any success in this complex and interesting field. I have purchased this book 7 or 8 times for several of my friends who 'want to know' what commodities trading is. The explanation of leverage, the concepts of 'longs and shorts' the idea of selling something (going short) is complex to the everyday person. Most people cannot imagine you can sell something (going short) without actually having something, and then buying later to fill your short. My wife is very smart, but she had "never knew" you could do such a thing. So, if you want to 'get the idea' of what commodities trading is, buy this book. It will not overwhelm you, but will help you understand enough (like putting your toe in the water of the pool) to determine if you want to jump in, or just wade in, or if you would rather find something 'less risky'.

Great for the Futures Clueless.......2005-10-03

I received the 1997 edition, NOT the 2000...therefore my comments are based on the earlier edition. I enjoyed the book as it is a very easy read and could more appropriately be titled 'Futures 100: An Orientation', as the author does exactly what he promises to do and that is to introduce the reader to the world of Futures. I read it in one day and would recommend it to anyone who is eager to learn about Futures. Waldron does provide a couple of interesting examples of success in trading, but more knowledge should be ascertained. He also offer additional resources to assist the reader with their journey for more information regarding concepts, research and trading.

I would recommend this reading if your only interpretation of Futures are multiple tomorrows :-)

Great for neophytes........2004-11-06

Neophytes will not find a better explanation of the futures market. How it works, what it is, terms and what they mean. The guy has a gift for explaining what could be confusing in a very straight forward manner that will also stick in your head. You learn more than you think.

I do find the typewriter look to the text annoying. Which is why it is only 4 stars.

And this is a book for someone knowing little or nothing about the futures or commodity markets. But it will get you up to speed very quickly and painlessly.

This book is:
1) ONLY for non-futures traders looking to understand the art of commodity trading,
2) illustrating step-by-step of when, what, who, and how of futures trading,
3) depicting how you can win or loss BIG from futures.

This book isn't:
1) an advice on how to WIN,
2) a tool on how to beat the system.

Since I am a bystander looking to investing in the futures, this is a great book to begin. A perfect Futures for Dummies.

"How to Start Making Money with your Crafts" is a great book for those crafters (like myself) who love to craft, and have decided to take their crafts into the "new world" of business, but have no idea how to go about doing that! The author takes the reader through a step-by-step approach from deciding on a product line to pricing and selling your products for profit. When I started reading this book, I only knew that I wanted to open a crafts business and work with fabric...when I finished the book, I had nailed down a product line, made decisions about pricing, and had decided how to sell the products! The book is full of helpful worksheets and questions at the end of each chapter to help you make important desisions about your business. It takes many considerations into account: time, family/ children, money, your abilities, etc. to help you succeed at your business. There are also many stories about other succesful crafters, their ideas, and hints to help you. The "selling" part of this book focuses on selling at craft fairs. Other selling options are discussed, but not explored, but even if you do not plan to sell at craft fairs, you will benefit from the wealth of information given in this book!

landscaping made easy.......2007-06-08

I love this little book because it gets down to the basics of designing and planting a border, without being a huge (expensive) book. Although simply written, I enjoy the author's aesthetic. These are not so much expensive, showy plants, but rather attractive, unfussy plants for sun and shade. Some of them are native plants, useful for attracting birds and insects.

How many times did Karl Malden lean his retro hat and cauliflower nose into your TV set and intone "The American Express card--Don't leave home without it"? Would it surprise you to learn that such a rock-solid spokesman for capitalism flirted with communism--or rather, it flirted with him--during his formative years in New York's Group Theatre, alongside stalwarts such as Elia Kazan, Clifford Odets, and Harold Clurman? Reconciling his idealistic stage youth with his mature commercial years, and being stolidly as proud of one as the other, is Malden's goal in this earnest memoir. This is a wonderful book: nostalgic yet clear-eyed, marvelously informative, frequently insightful, often moving, unfailingly endearing, always interesting, and--best of all--thoroughly entertaining. It's trite to say it, but I literally couldn't put "When Do I Start?" down.

Karl Malden's autobiography is, in addition to being the fascinating chronicle of an all-American life, a veritable between-the-covers film festival: It overflows with intriguing anecdotes--marvelous, revelatory tales of the amazing array of actors, writers, directors, and other assorted characters whose lives have intersected with Malden's over the course of his truly impressive career.

But, perhaps best of all, this book clearly speaks in the author's own thoroughly likable, very American voice: It's down-to-earth, always direct, always truthful, thoughtfully considered, admirably reflective, precisely observant, but never, ever, the least bit mean-spirited or egotistical. This is a book--and a man--to love.

I don't think I've ever enjoyed a film star's memoir more than this one. I recommend "When Do I Start" as the perfect present for every movie buff, every theatre lover, every TV fan--even every travelers' cheque user--on anyone's gift list. I suspect that even people who've never heard of Karl Malden (can such exist?) will like his book--and I know that everyone who reads it will want to sit right down in front of the TV with a big bowl of popcorn to watch all the videos of Malden's many marvelous films.

"When Do I Start?" is a real find and a real "keeper": an admirable, fascinating book by and about an admirable, fascinating man.

And oh, yes: It's got lots of great pictures, too!

Growing Up Fatherless in the Fifties.......2007-04-05

I commend Madeleine Blais for her effort to record her childhood experiences. She recalls her reaction to her father's untimely death and draws nicely described vignettes of her five siblings and their not-quite-able-to-cope mother. The scenes are linked with mentions of songs, current events and other minutiae of the 50s. Unfortunately these sound like they were gleaned from an almanac to serve as fillers.
She has some pleasant moments in the book, and I was reading it just for that "growing up in the 50s" ambience. I grew up as one-of-six and was interested in her experience in a large family.
There's nothing much wrong with the biography, but it just seems lacking somehow. The account lacks the elegance of language of Trevanian's The Crazy Ladies of Pearl Street while their middle class life lacks the drama quotient of The Glass Castle. Maybe if I hadn't read those first, I'd find Uphill Walkers more compelling.
