Book Description
More than 120 color photographs depict this jewel of the Sierra Nevada.
The beauty and the grandeur of Yosemite National Park beckon 4.1 million visitors each year. Some are rock climbers, come to challenge Yosemite's granite. Some, en route to the backcountry, come for solitude. But by far the greatest number come to experience the view from the valley. Author Kenneth Brower details the captivating variety of Yosemite's plants and animals. He chronicles how rivers of ice shaped the valley and relates the saga of the park through its first one hundred years. Despite concerns about crowds of visitors straining park resources, Brower remains optimistic. He writes, "The message of Yosemite is not how badly the park is run, but how well."

Stunningly beautiful........2000-08-12
For those of you who have been to Yosemite, this book will make you long to go back. For those who haven't, you'll want to experience the park for the first time. The priniciple feature of this NG Park Profile is the photography, and as usual, NG doesn't disappoint. I feel the author does a good job in the text of dealing with many of the features, and issues, of Yosemite, but the pictures are the core of this book.

Book Description
When Robert F. Peary claimed discovery of the North Pole on April 6, 1909, the only other American to stand beside him was a black man, Matthew A. Henson. A native of Charles County, Maryland, Henson accompanied Peary on eight Arctic journeys between 1891 and 1909. His skill in interpreting the language of the North Greenland Eskimos, in building boats and repairing sledges, and in driving dog teams was essential to the ultimate success of the admiral, who wrote, "I can't get along without him." Yet Henson was for the most part ignored, even by Peary, after that historic expedition.
A Black Explorer at the North Pole reminds the reader that where Peary went so did Henson—often one step ahead as a troubleshooter. Drawing largely on his diaries, Henson describes the voyage of the steamer Roosevelt to Cape Sheridan on Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic and the four-hundred-mile trek by dogsled over treacherous ice to the top of the world.
Susan A. Kaplan, in her introduction to the Bison Book edition, discusses Henson’s accomplishments and the current controversy surrounding Peary's claim to discovery of the North Pole.

Book Description
What forces drive competition in an industry? What moves will competitors make? How will one's industry evolve? How do strategic planners respond to competitive actions? How can a firm be best positioned to compete in the long run?
Michael Porter's Competitive Strategy is the definitive work on the subject of "competitive strategy," the hottest new concept in American business today. The book addresses major questions of vital concern to managers, and presents a comprehensive set of analytical techniques for understanding a business and the behavior of its competitors.
Step-by-step, Porter provides the techniques and tools managers need to successfully conduct an industry and competitor analysis. Just a few examples:
- The fundamental factors determining the nature of competition in a business.
- The three generic competitive strategies for coping with industry structure: cost leadership, differentiation, and "focus."
- How to recognize and act on "market signals" from competitors.
- Forecasting how the structure of an industry will evolve.
- The costs, risks, and returns of a "preemptive" strategy.
- Competing effectively in an emerging industry.
- Selecting new industries to enter.
Beginning with a comprehensive set of tools and techniques for analyzing any industry and any array of competitors, the book moves on to examine competitive strategies for fragmented industries, emerging industries, maturing industries, declining industries and global industries. The final section of the book provides analytical techniques for making the important strategic decisions that confront firms -- vertical integration, major capacity expansion, divestment and entry into new businesses.
This book will enable managers to anticipate and prepare for -- rather than simply react to -- sudden competitor moves, new entries into their business, and shifts in industry structure, as well as to take forceful positive action to improve a company's position through tested competitive strategies. Competitive Strategy is destined to become the Bible for Fortune 500 managers, company advisers, and securities analysts.
Customer Reviews:
A Classic.......2007-04-16
This book is perhaps the best overview of competitive strategy analysis ever written. The book together with Porter's "Competitive Advantage" and "Competitive Advantage of Nations" has remained as the model or classic work on business strategy. Although the business world has evolved significantly since 1980 when the book was published, the framework and analysis of the book is still applicable and relevant today. Therefore, this book is a "must-have" for anyone involved in Strategic Planning and Analysis since many of his concepts can easily be applied to the current economic environment, with some necessary adaptations. The framework Porter lays out is a great starting point for any analysis of industries or competitors.
The book is well written in a clear and straightforward, and easy to understand format, although sometimes I got the sense that the book can tend to repeat itself. However, the clarity of the concepts is a welcome change from some lesser textbooks you sometimes meet in many other books on business strategy, and his repetition serves to reinforce his message.
However, the rapid advances of technology mean that there is need for some adaptation of some of the concepts to take into account the changing paradigms such as the need to delight the customer with the competitor not being the centre of gravity but rather the customer. In this regard, the book has some limitations, because the competitive dimension is frequently less important than the customer element in the current environment.
Despite these weaknesses, this book provides an excellent start of how to think about competitors, as long as you keep a close look at the additional dimensions after grasping the analysis.
Comprehensive checklist.......2007-02-17
This book is a checklist, a great checklist for anyone doing analysis on industries or companies. Porter is a hard to miss if you work in this area, so you might as well get through this book, and you'll know what everyone is talking about, and you'll also get a good framework that ensures that your analysis doesn't skip important points.
Reading Art of War and those kinds of books gives you another kind of strategy, which is very useful in combination with the things Porter gives you. Basically, I think Porter has done a great job of "summarizing" the strategy-process, and this is why the book is fo famous, and it is also why I give it 4 and not 5 stars. With sound theory and thorough work you will get the same insights as with Porters framework, and you will also be better equipped to deal with the peculiarities in every situation. Nevertheless, many peole don't have time/the interest for more than a summary, so for them this book is great. And for the rest it's great to get through it to learn the "common language" that is prevalent in the industry of strategy and anlysis today.
Landmark Book on How to Think about Competing.......2006-10-11
"Competitive Strategy" was one of my favorite books when I was studying for an MBA. It continues to be one of my key reference books. It will help you learn how to think about competing. Although the concepts contained are now viewed as common sense, so many people ignore these basics and fail. This is a must read for anyone in business.
You Know It's a Classic -- So Just Buy It.......2006-07-20
There's no point in me telling you something you already know (this seminal book came out over 25 years ago -- its REQUIRED reading at every respectable MBA program I can think of).
What I will say is that this is a critical book to own if you want to understand how and why firms choose to penetrate (or avoid) markets. Speaking from my own experience, this is also a MUST HAVE if you want to understand industry dynamics if you are a consultant, or in my case, an aspiring equity research analyst.
An excellent book.......2006-06-17
Much has been written about Porter in these reviews and elsewhere, so I won't repeat that information. Instead, I will focus on what drew me to this book, and from that, what its strengths and weeknesses are.
I heard about "Competitive Strategy" because it was referenced by a number of stock analysts seeking to determine or project earnings of a particular company going forward. Read with that position alone in mind, "Competitive Strategy" is fairly esoteric. The book itself is written more from the perspective of a consultant or "big picture" thinker than it is from, say, the view of a financer or investor. While that was somewhat of a drawback for me for my purposes, it certainly does not detract from the overall value of the book.
The book itself is quite readable, despite the academic credentials of the author and much of its audience and its theoretical bent. However, readers seeking quantafiable information will not find formulas or other information of a comparable nature to guide them. This is not unexpected, yet Porter's book is cited or referenced by a fair number of stock market analysts seeking support a variety of conclusions they've reached. After reading the book myself, I am forced to conclude that (i) there is no crystal ball for anyone to determine the future, and (ii) while Porter's book is an invaluable tool for management of a particular entity to use in assessing its competitive environment and strategy, it does not provide the individual investor with the ability to read futur events.
In all, Porter's book is a great read, and should add greatly to any person's ability to analyze the environment in which a particular corporation exists. However, investors might wish to supplement it with methods from other disciplines (such as Benjamin Graham, Mary Buffett, Marty Whitman, etc.).

Description:
We examined the occurrence of Dactylorhiza majalis, the most abundant terrestrial orchid species growing in rapidly disappearing wet meadows, at 50 historical sites for 3 years. We aimed to find the most frequent reasons for its recent extinction at many sites. We found that the main reasons for its extinction were absence of mowing, intensive fertilisation and washouts of fertilisers from fields nearby. At extant sites, we studied its biometric characteristics and composition of surrounding vegetation, to determine factors affecting its persistence. Bad performance of persisting populations of this species was associated with prevalence of grasses, low May temperatures and absence of mowing. This confirms, at metapopulation level, what has previously been observed at the level of individual populations. We suggest that the system of agricultural subsidies in the country should change towards more sensitive allocation of funds to those farmers, who will adopt the appropriate management of wet meadows and their surroundings.

Experience and Insight.......2000-12-21
The Pathology of the English Renaissance by Elizabeth Mazzola is a beautifully written study that illiminates the nature of experience during the English Renaissance and that elucidates the problematical ways in which it was understood and obscured by great writers of the period, from Spenser to Shakespeare. It is a signal achievement by a young scholar of prodigious intellect. Literary criticism raised to a high art!

My Fifteen Minutes: An Autobiography of a Child Star of the Golden Era of Hollywood
ASIN: 0786408855 |
Book Description
Among Hollywood's child stars are some talented children, normal and pleasant who find fame in film. Margaret O'Brien is one; her career began in 1941. The fresh-faced moppet quickly became a sensation and won the 1944 Academy Award for Outstanding Child Actress. As Adele in Jane Eyre (1944) and Beth in Little Women (1949), Margaret endeared herself to millions. Despite the strain of growing up on screen, O'Brien continues to perform today.
This reference work details O'Brien's remarkable and varied career on stage, screen, and television: it includes a biography and a complete listing of all her film, radio, stage, and television appearances, as well as references to her in magazines and newspapers. Each entry includes complete production information, as well as reviews and behind-the-scenes commentary. Included are forewords by Robert Young and O'Brien herself, who provided much of the information in this book. Dozens of photos, including many from O'Brien's personal collection, illustrate the text and show the varied stages of a career that includes both famous roles and famous friendships.
Customer Reviews:
A companion for Garbo.......2007-08-14
Remember "the films of" series of books on famous actors? Lotsa pictures? Every film listed in chronological order? That's the design of this much belated book (copyright 2000). And it comes with the direct assistance of Margaret O'Brien herself as she herself explains in the Forward.
After a brief biography, each of her films is presented, the cast and crew listed, the plot summarized with lots of behind-the-scenes revelations included. And talk about comprehensive! I was unaware (tho, hardly surprised) of the two or three movie shorts done during the war. But did you know she did a Japanese film when she was about 15 or 16? Much later, a couple films in Peru? A little-known Disney film (with Jenny Agutter)? And, fairly recently, a couple indie films (ones which I plan to avoid).
This book also includes abbreviated listings of her stage work and radio performances, and a pretty comprehensive listing of her television appearances.
Maybe because of Margaret's involvement, I felt the information was carefully sifted to avoid offending her. As an admirer, I didn't mind that. It's much more important that this compilation and updated biography become available.
Look at that face! How could you resist this book? I bet the movie critic of the 1940s James Agee couldn't have if he were alive today. And based on his reviews of Margaret's movies, he would have rested his copy of it against his copy of "The Films of Greta Garbo".
Wonderful book for a wonderful child star.......2001-08-19
This book has everything about the wonderful little actress, Margaret O'Brien. Not only does it have a biographical section, but details every film she every made with a complete listing of cast, crew, synopis, a behind the scenes look at the making of the film and comments from costars and O'Brien herself. The author has put a lot of research into this book and it deserves to be read.
Margaret Found!.......2001-07-10
This book does exactly what it promises by providing a biography of O'Brien's life and a review of her career to date. For any fan of M.B., this is an enjoyable read. What is especially interesting is that this is not a lurid tale of a former child star descending into an ever darkening pit of pain and confusion. It is the story of a survivor who might have transitioned into adult superstardom had it not been for the ever changing tastes of the viewing public and the disintegration of the studio system. I was glad to see that someone cared enough to present an honest and fair picture of Margaret's career and life while a good number of her co-stars were alive and able to be interviewed.
Informative Book ON Great Star.......2000-10-15
Neatly organized book on the greatest of all child stars. Includes complete listing of all television appearances - she did a ton of them!! MOB comments on all her film rolls which is fasinating. Also some very rare photos from MOB'S private collection. Author is close friend of MOB which adds authenticity to this book

Book Description
This is the first biographical study of John Fielden, industrial magnate and radical MP for Oldham in Lancashire from 1832 to 1847. Best known as a leading advocate of factory reform - he was the parliamentary sponsor of the momentous Ten Hours Act of 1847 - Fielden also took a conspicuous part in the Owenite, Chartist, and anti-Poor Law movements. Drawing on a little-used collection of Fielden family papers, the book offers an assessment of each of the movements in which Fielden's relationship with them, and discusses the influences which went into the making of a radical industrialist who occupied a unique place in Parliament as the people's representative. This long overdue account of his personal, business, and political life offers new insights into the turbulent politics of mid-nineteenth century England.
