Nina Segal's update of the late Eric Kocher's work provides a helpful guide for international job-seekers. From a bewildering array of options, Segal breaks career paths down by sector (media, finance, government, international organizations, NGOs and non-profits, law firms) and provides advice on the type of experience and qualifications that can help you get a foot in the door at these complex employers.

This is not a book about finding work abroad! Nor does it try to be a comprehensive index of every employer with international operations or a foreign focus. Rather, it's a starting point for a career path with big employers such as the United Nations, the US State Department, the Associated Press, the World Bank, Citigroup, and Human Rights Watch. The book focuses on the information you'd need to find an entry-level to mid-level job at companies and organizations with strong international components to their work. This latest edition adds a host of web links facilitating further research.

Segal is a human resources consultant at the UN, and previously headed the career services office at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. She has spent years studying and guiding successful international careers. "International Jobs" is a succinct distillation of what she's learned. While it could be improved, the book really is in a field of its own, and very useful for anyone seeking a path to a cosmopolitan career and life. Rubbish.......2006-02-10

This book is awful. As said below, see the reviews of the 5. edition if you don't believe me. As an American who has permanently immigrated abroad and has had to work through the cultural hardships and bureaucracy in Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom I can say from personal experience that this book can at best be called naive. They take the typical N. American point of view that you can get on anywhere with english, they assume that the american resume will work in every country (it won't...in the UK the format is different (CV) and in other countries like Germany you have to write in a different format and in german), they give no information about how working in any of these countries is different both culturally and in respect to the working laws, and the jobs that they do list are low level jobs that no one would ever work in for more than a year (teach english abroad, volunteer work, etc.).

If you are looking for a job abroad, first off learn the language of the country you want to work in. Then go to or call the embassy and ask them about the working laws and what you have to do to get a visa. After that start sending out local formatted CVs to companies in the country, but under any circumstances do NOT buy this book.

Nice Companion Book.......2003-11-21

This book is a nice companion to the more comprehensive "International Job Finder: Where the Jobs are Worldwide." While "International Job Finder" provides everything you could want to know about where to find jobs around the globe via the Internet and in print, the value of "International Jobs" rests in the in-depth information it provides about hundreds of international employers. "International Job Finder" is a lot more candid about how to stay safe overseas these days while "International Jobs" pretty much glosses over the risks in overseas work. But between them, the two books cover just about everything you need to know for a successful international job search.

This author managed to get a grade-school type exercise in creative writing published. I am a cat lover, but this is just to the extreme. My young cat loving niece wants to be a chef, and I can't imagine this holding her attention for more than the first few pages.

Cat Nips: Delightful Nips of TRUE Culinary-Minded Kitty Food.......2003-05-04

This is the very first book I have seen for cats that focuses on food for cats "FOR" cats! Cats will love it and readers will LOVE to hate it! It is a wonderfully well-versed book - even the titles and subtitles are "cat-catchy" and humorous (be sure to read even the small print). The hilarious expressions in the colorful artwork fit the verses perfectly - the people who put this book together really must KNOW cats! I have shared this book with fellow student cat-lovers and we all agree "It's a RIOT!!!"

Anecdotal, limited autobiography.......2006-09-23

Carey's limited autobiography is very readable - though occasionally repetitious - and provides some human insights into the making of some of Ford's most memorable westerns. (However, there is no discussion of the artistic merits of the films.) The text is complementd by crisp black and white photos. Ford emerges as an eccentric and autocratic, and sometimes even cruel, director. Some of his behaviour towards the actors makes unpleasant reading, and I wonder that the actors were willing to put up with his abuse. Some, like Henry Fonda, weren't willing to do so and fell out with Ford. Carey's own father, after working with Ford, permanently parted company with him. My only serious disappointment is that Carey could have told readers more about his own long acting career, but the title accurately describes the book's contents.

When Men Were Men........2006-08-29

This excellent book harks back to a Hollywood era when men were men. It encompasses the silent films starring Carey's father, who was a major star and successfully made the transition to talkies, and is full of anecdotes about an age when stars like John Wayne were expected to be as tough as the characters they portrayed.Carey himself even in old age has the boyish looks that probably spoiled his chances of emulating Wayne in the tough-guy roles,but what a career. His stories of Wayne and Ford are great,but what makes the book even more enjoyable are the stories concerning the less well known characters who were the backbone of Ford's films. Actors like Ben Johnson who was also a world champion rodeo rider,Hank Worden who always seemed to get the dotty old-timer roles but who was a great horseman and tough as old boots,Ken Curtis,Ward Bond,and the bit-players who made these films so wonderful. In the days before the computer generated image ruined the action film these men(and women!)literally threw themselves into their roles,and Carey's stories bring the whole era to life. Reading what Ford did to Carey to make his death scene in "3 Godfathers" realistic,and the sadistic treatment handed out even to Wayne ,makes you glad to be reading it from the comfort of your armchair.These films have never been bettered,and this book shows you why.A great read.

A fun book to read.......2004-07-24

The value in this book is not just that it paints an interesting picture of the great John Ford, but that it also shows sides of the Ford stock actors we have not seen. Did you know that Ward Bond loved the ladies and had the hots for Vera Ralston when they were filming The Searchers? That Ford and Richard Widmark got along like gangbusters? That Ken Curtis's strange accent in The Searchers came about by accident and got him the part of Festus on Gunsmoke years later? Or that Victor Jory was a tough old bird?

The book is full of interesting little tidbits of information like this about actors I have known and loved. It even gave me an understanding of why The Long Grey Line - one of my favorite Ford films - was not well received. All the details of the problems, the ends and outs, the stuntmen, the jokes, the hard work of making each film made me want to pull all those films off the shelf and watch them again.

If you love old these truly classic films you will not want to miss this book.

Sidekick.......2001-08-07

An interesting companion to some of the bios now appearing about John Ford. Carey first met Ford when his father worked with Ford in silent movies and grew up with Uncle Jack to have a movie career of his own. Some good behind the scene color to a man of prodigious talent and personality faults.

Outstanding!.......1998-07-16

A really fine book by someone who has a true appreciation for the giants he worked with. Mr. Carey is a wonderful story teller, sensitive with a good sense of humor. His observations make for what may be the best book about John Ford ever written. But it is Dobe Carey's depiction of all the greats who worked for Ford that makes this book special indeed. They were unique and wonderful screen icons, the likes of which we will never see again. Mr. Carey brings them to life again in a way I shall never forget. Do not miss this book!

A Fascinating Omnium Gatherum.......2005-07-24

If this book has flaws (for what it attempts to be), one lies with the author and one with the publisher.

The writer is too much of his time, a bit obsessed with judging all the people as to whether they were "truly female" or "real men," whether they were properly mature or "giant children." That, and to cover his vast subject (the entirety of England of note and commonality both, not just the Regent and the ton), for people he often relies too heavily on 'The Dictionary of National Biography', taking its fourth-hand judgements rather too seriously beyond the mere facts of birth, death, marriage and offspring. His bibliography lists better books, which he might have paid more attention to.

Yes, I read the text as well as looked at the pictures, which are sometimes three per page. This is the other problem. To cram this many on in the wide borders results in them often being tiny and dark, so that any detail, sometimes any sense or image, is lost. In many cases, items with captions or speech balloons are unreadable. This is the publisher's fault: they could have either reduced the number of illustrations, making more of them valuable rather than blobby, or they could have allowed more pages and put less text per page around larger images.

That done with, if the subject interests you, I can't recommend this too highly. The pictures that are visible are a valuable cross selection, like a box full of snapshots of everywhere: machinery, grand houses, frost fairs on the Thames, bridges, furniture, mail coaches in thunderstorms, and a constant stream of portraits. If you have been studying this period a while, finally seeing the faces of the names often mentioned adds a whole level of illumination.

As well, the text is marvelously informative on a vast number of subjects. Organization year by year helps the reader see when different influences struck, rather than making it difficult to co-ordinate the war, home politics, and shifts in the arts because they're in separate chapters. Yes, sometimes he does stop to give background on an item only in this year first really important, or move forward to sum up the future of someone he means to not bring up again (and not leave the reader hanging and wondering). It's done very smoothly.

It's a good book to read cover to cover, yet one can then keep it at chairside and dip into it anywhere for a few minutes of entertainment and education. All in all, both a fun book and a good book, a combination rarely found.

A wonderfully detailed and readable account of the Regency era (1811-1820) and its focal point--Prince George IV. The author ably explores,within the context of the eras mores and singular fashion, the lives of its most celebrated and scandalous figures. The author also recounts the events of the Napoleaonic Wars taking place at the time in an interesting and relevant fashion. All in all, I found this book to be a very easy and enjoyable read with just enough history and gossip to keep you moving right along. If you are interested in the era, I would also recommend The Regency Companion, an enjoyable and detailed reference work of the time.

Noel Reddings life as a musician and casualty of the business.......2006-08-04

I put off reading this for years due to hearing from friends who were turned off by the problems the late Noel Redding had getting paid for his contributions to the music of the Experience band. It was worth the read and is a good companion piece to Mitch Mitchell's book about his Experience years. As mentioned in other reviews the writing isn't the best and the last third of the book does go into mind numbing detail of how he was denied royalties on music he helped create that appeared on the 3 albums of JHE.
Noel is pretty honest about his over the top self medicating abuse but there is also there is some humor here in the life of a musican starting out. Some fascinating observations from someone who was there, such as his opinion that as much as everyone loved Jimi Hendrixes guitar playing; it was his intimate talk/singing vocal work that created an atmosphere that really drew people in. Noel probably weighed not a whole lot over 125 pounds and had a somewhat quiet and nasal singing and talking style, but here's a guy that took a bus to an audition as a very young man and was soon touring the world with 2 of the top musicians of the era and holding his own on bass with a dirty driving tone and plenty of inventive ideas of his own . If you like the intro to the song The Burning Of The Midnight Lamp, the title of the song Midnight Lightning or the guitar introduction to the song Freedom , they are just a few of the examples of the many things Noel brought to the party and did not receive credit for.
Noels comments that it was the 3rd tour that finished the JHE group off explain why the 2 shows I saw them do in 1968 were unfortunately just not that memorable musically although the first one was exciting. Plus it was way better than going to the high school homecoming dance the same night

Essential reading for any Hendrix fan and an real eye opener into the industry for any budding muscians out there........2005-08-17

Although this is indeed not a particularly well written book, (and I thought Jessica's review was hilarious), you have to bear in mind that Noel was a bass player, not a writer. This is Noel's story and pretty essential reading for any Hendrix fan. Noel clearly, dearly loved Jimi and understood him well and had a good perspective and balance on his character, and events that happened. But obviously he had his opinon.

What struck me most is that it's a real eye opener as to what being a successful musician is like. I also think any budding musician should read this-so they can find out exactly what they're letting themselves in for. It is so easy to imagine the life of a successful musician as glamourous when it's far from it. Even after The Experience were famous they were still going to gigs sitting in the back of a van on the top of the equipment, with their heads banging on the ceiling. Not the fur coat and limo people would perhaps envisage. Although it goes to show that despite no sleep, no time off, no money, and barely the chance of a decent meal, at least a man that looked like "Bob Dylan's grandmother" as Jimi called him, could get more action than Frank Sinatra probably ever did.

Yes, it's full of these boring detailed lists that Redding liked to make of various expenses, but despite this it's still a very entertaining book and the man has a great sense of humour. It's very unfair that Noel never got his money, but if you read this you can see in the end he had what money could never buy-real friends away from the sharks of the music industry, and the love and support of his family. I personaly wouldn't begrudge him a single penny he made from this book. I was very saddened when I heard he died a while back. RIP Noel.

Essential Perspective.......2004-04-08

I picked this up as soon as it was released in the US (which I thought was '92 but Amazon lists as '96). The lasting impression from the first read was all about the bitterness and misfortune Noel Redding had endured during and after his tenure with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Since that first read, I've occasionally used it as a reference, but only for the occasional spot-check.

After reading the new and exceptional Jimi Hendrix: Musician by Keith Shadwick, I knew it was time to give this and other core Hendrix books a fresh look. I'm glad I did. The nearly continuous bitterness, which I found stifling on the first go round did not irritate as much during this re-read. Thus I managed to get past that aspect and see more of the less obvious side of the book. This really is essential reading for those wanting to know more about Jimi and his music.

Noel was a dependable diary-keeper during his Experience days and thus has helped immensely to solidify the fact base for the groups lifetime. One one hand, you could argue that given the impressive record of substance abuse, how reliable are diary notes of the perpetually wasted and hung over but the answer is: more than historical comments made by those that weren't there. And therein lies the true value of this book: Noel was there. Although he may have had concerns about his treatment that added to the already mountainous stress endured by an overworked band, his perspectives, like those of Mitch and Jimi, have helped to frame the picture - to put the dirt on the soles of the work shoes as it were.

So the bottom line is that I encourage anyone interested in the real Jimi Hendrix story to read this book (and others as well). Sure, there is bias, but so what? Everyone is entitled to their opinion, especially the people that were THERE.

As always, when dealing with books on legendary people like Hendrix, you're better off with something written by someone who was actually *there*. And Noel Redding certainly was there.

I Expected More Experiences.......2003-12-01

First off, I'll tell you what I think is good about this book. It is loaded with historical details from the heyday of Jimi's career. There are numerous comments that give life to the incredibly hectic touring and recording career which went a long way towards sapping the life from one of rock music's most creative forces. It's easy to look back at Jimi's life and see how the business contributed to the situations surrounding his death but back then, it seems, life was just a blur. In this regard, perhaps Mitch Mitchell has just given us an honest account of the time, because Inside The Experience does not seem to be as full of introspection as I'd expected. I would have been tempted to give this book three stars had I written the review back when the book was published. However, I just re-read it and now see that Mitchell's treatment, while not capable of inspiring much deep thought in the reader, does appear to be somehow proper in that it shows how difficult it must have been to have any semblence of coherent thought while living in the pop vortex. Here's to hoping that Mitch will someday take this book as a template to start from, then really dig deep into his inner being to tell more clearly what it felt like from his perspective, not only during the Experience's heyday, but also afterwards, when the glow receded and his new reality came into focus.

A Great Book.......2003-05-28

For anyone who wants to get an idea of what it was like to travel with and be a part of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, then this book is for you.
Mitch Mitchell, the drummer for the Experience, writes his personal memoirs of the years with Hendrix on the road, along with rare photographs of rocks greatest guitarist.
