Explore Puerto Rico is a guide and travel overview for the island of Puerto Rico. This book includes a wide range of information, everything from background knowledge on the island's natural and cultural environment through places to stay while on the island to interesting things to do at every stop along the way.

There are nine sections in Explore Puerto Rico: Introduction; Practicalities; San Juan & Environs; Northeastern Puerto Rico; Vieques; Culebra; Southeastern Puerto Rico; Southwestern Puerto Rico; and Northwestern Puerto Rico. The introduction section contains an overview about Puerto Rico. This detailed information includes land, climate, flora, fauna, history, government, economy, culture, and religion of this area. This section also includes general information on transportation, accommodation, dining, and entertainment while enjoying Puerto Rico.

The next chapter, Practicalities, contains contacts and general information on visas, codes of conduct, and health during travel to this island. Each entry contains a short paragraph about each of these general topics including contacts.

The rest of the sections in Explore Puerto Rico focus on particular parts or regions of the island. The first portion of each section describes a little about the particular region including the history. After this overview, specific examples of transportation, accommodation, restaurants, shopping, tourist information, services, and sights are depicted in detail. Puerto Rico means "rich port" and this guide will introduce the reader to all of the riches that the island has to offer including the only tropical National Forest in the U.S. Detailed visitor information is provided for the major cities, small towns and the outer regions of the main island but this guide also dedicates several pages to each of the two other islands just off of Puerto Rico: Vieques and Culebra. There is even information about the least known of the offshore islands, Mona Island. Readers will find descriptive accounts of music, festivals, foods, sports & sporting events, hiking tours, accommodations and entertainment. Learn how to spot migrating humpback whales between December and May, search the skies for the Puerto Rican parrot that is nearly extinct and explore the diminishing Mangroves that dampen waves and winds. Other interesting information is provided about native arts and crafts, locally produced beer and rum, sugar and coffee plantations, vanilla production and exportation. I visited Puerto Rico twice before reading Explore Puerto Rico and it helped me see that I discovered only a small fraction of what the island has to offer. A good read.......2006-01-18

This book takes you off the beaten path and into small towns and villages, through the rainforest (there are pages on El Yunque) and down to explore caves. Pariser likes to explore not only the terrain of Puerto Rico with its natural forests, beaches and snorkeling spots, but he also likes the local color and likes to meet the local people. Every festival day is covered and every little town seems to have one. Of course there are listings of hotels and guesthouses, restaurants and lunch spots, not only in San Juan, but in the surfing mecca of Rincon, in Ponce, and plenty of other places. Bus routes and driving directions are given. A visit to the small island of Culebra is another adventure.
Old San Juan gets strong coverage, plus there is a good section where typical Puerto Rican menu items are translated (you'll need that outside of the big hotel area since many residents do not speak English). A quick Spanish Vocabulary in the back gives you the most common phrases at a glance.
The history and culture sections are sprinkled throughout the book with lots of opinions on everything from colonialism to greenhouse emissions to the ritual of sea turtles laying their eggs. Pariser packs a lot into a single guide and his historical sidebars are fascinating.

Very socially responsible, refreshingly honest.......2005-10-27

It was a refreshingly honest look at the island and its culture. Rarely does a guide book both respect a place and give you the 'warts and all' assessment of what goes down there and how. Very glad to have bought and read it!

Nice book, good background information.......2004-01-23

We really enjoyed using this book. We found few errors and appreciated the frank evaluations. We feel that travel guides all have their good and bad parts. Your impression will depend upon who you are (what type of traveler) and what you are interested in. Lets Go is researched by college students, and, while we found it interesting, it lacked depth. Explore Puerto Rico covered some things better and other things less well in comparison to the Lonely Planet and Lets Go guides. We found mistakes in all of the travel guides we used. Practically every travel guide we've ever used has something out of date or a mistake. The official tourist literature sometimes has mistakes. It's just a fact of life. We did find that Explore Puerto Rico had a pretty good sense of humor. We did find the new update on the publisher's site to be of help, along with the various e-mails posted on the Yahoo! group. The e-mails and websites, which were quite comprehensive, were quite good also. We used a road map for navigation, but it's hard not to get lost in Puerto Rico. Signage is poor, and the regular maps, sold at the gas stations, often have inaccuracies. We didn't see that the Hotel Las Delicias had any directions to it. In any event, we always call a hotel first to ask for directions. Some people are just looking for something to complain about! It doesn't seem as if they have traveled much. It's pretty hard to write a travel guide, and we really appreciate the people who do it. We wouldn't like to have to do this job: it seems pretty thankless.

Before you read Wade Cook's book, be sure to read about his bankruptcy in 2004. Just enter his name on Google and you will see more news articles about it than you could find time to read!
It was publicized around here, but people in other parts of the country may not have heard about it.

Brilliant Book by a brilliant businessman.......2004-09-15

I found a wealth of information in this book. Some, needs to be updated but at least 98% of the book is current and accurate for 2004. I no longer brag about how much I am worth nor am I going to let anyone know where they can find out how much I am worth! Too many reptiles out there looking for easy money. Think I am kidding? Just move up in the financial world and you automatically become a target.

If you are serious about reducing your taxes..pronto, then read Brilliant Deductions by Wade Cook. I also recommend Tax Loopholes in the Rich Dad Advisor series and Money Mastery. These books will make you tax smart and add to your cash flow.

Exciting and very well written........2003-11-24

I have seen other books by Wade Cook and wasn't all that impressed. This one really did impress me and is a worthwhile read.

In this book you will learn about Nevada Corporations, income splitting and more. Cook also writes in an easy to read style and makes the information jump to life. He is an excellent writer.

Excellent Resource for Gardeners Who Love Birds.......2005-01-02

This is a very nicely done book. Includes some lovely photographs of gardens and close ups of birds. The information provided is the best part of this book, though. The book starts out by saying that all too often, homeowners hang a pretty painted birdhouse in their yard and sit back and wait for birds to move in. The book then goes on to explain ways to attract birds to your yard that are actually helpful to the health and wellbeing of the birds. The book provides the reader with an understanding of what birds want and need in a habitat.

Lists of recommended plantings, favorite foods by bird species, nest box dimenions by species, and other useful information are included.

I have found myself referring back to this book often as I try each year to make my yard a little more bird friendly - and I've had real success - the number of species that visit my yard have increased with each year.

A great book.......2002-09-16

Based on my own limited experience, I would assume that all gardeners end up being birdwatchers. When I would be out in our garden working, or just sitting in it and enjoying a cool evening, the songs of the birds always added to the experience, and they more and more attracted my attention.

In this wonderful book, the authors tell you everything you need to make your garden a bird-friendly environment, and as such a bird-magnet. Everything is covered herein, including what flowers to plant, what utilities to add (birdbaths, houses, feeders, etc.), and even notes on how to bird watch, and what birds you are likely to see. This is a great book, one that I highly recommend to all fellow gardeners!

MARVELOUS, WONDERFUL, INFORMATIVE, BEAUTIFUL.......2000-04-04

Whether you enjoy gardening or not this is a must have, enjoyable book. Delightful photographs accompanied with informative descriptions regarding the plants that birds love. It also describes what function the plants provide for the birds as well as information on the habits of birds. I would joyfully recommend this book for everyone of all ages to enjoy.

The Kong Koan of colonial Batavia was a semi-autonomous organization, in which the local elite of Jakarta's Chinese community supervised and coordinated its social and religious matters. With this type of actor, or with almost any type of actor, it's better to view the material as opposed to reading it. That's why I'd have to endorse another Keanu Reeves bio, but on DVD- KEANU REEVES: JOURNEY TO SUCCESS. For a couple bucks more, you can receive all the info in this book upon your TV screen, with footage, film clips and movie premieres. I know what I'm talking about, I'm Fortunato Plethora.

Common sense on a subject that usually lacks it........2000-06-02

Since even before Milton Friedman famously contended that the social responsibility of business is to maximize profits, there has been a vigorous debate between those who believe corporations should put purported notions of socially responsible behavior ahead of profits and those of who are skeptical that doing so leads to desirable results. One of the chief tenets of the Friedman-esque position is that responsible corporate behavior is profit maximizing. That is, the private interests of the corporation and the public interest are typically congruent.

In this excellent analysis, John Hood convincingly demonstrates that compassion and capitalism are not inconsistent, but go hand in hand. Hood combines statistical evidence with telling anecdotes drawn from a plethora of industries to show that profit maximizing firms consistently also advance the common good. Indeed, by the end of Hood's text, one is ineluctably lead to the conclusion that for profit corporations have done far more good than government or nonprofits. Highly recommended.

It is critical to your well-being.I specialized in the harder to do transactions such as first time homebuyers' programs, B paper and lower such as C to C- paper, HUD contracts, seller carries, wraps, 1031 Exchanges, lease purchases, bank repos and many other off-the-wall transactions. Basically, I tried to find every other type of transaction that was not an “A” paper deal to learn how to do.
