A useful book.......2007-01-06

I had two copies of this book with me while in Iraq and I made sure to give one copy to someone who would make good use of it. I found most of the contact indformation to be quite up-to-date while I was there in 2005 but of course things can change quickly over there. The book even provided some good background info and photos. Its small format makes it perfect for carrying in an ACU or DCU pocket.

This book was published pre-war and at least one of the authors was a long-time advocate of lifting sanctions and ally of John Pilger. It's terrible on the Kurdish regions.

More up-to-date is Gilles Munier 'Iraq: an Illustrated History and Guide', although it lacks the details re hotels etc.

Either might be of use - and or interest - to someone visiting. But surely no-one would be mad enough to rely on either for decisions about where to travel and where to stay: for either you must have up-to-date information from people on the ground whom you trust.

It is the only book available with any hotels listed.
It is for the 5 star traveler and if you want to use as a budget traveler always skip the first or top suggestions for hotels. Go for the third or last and you will be on the shoestring. I am a cultural traveler and like people, and the recommendations in the book will keep you away from the people, and away from the center of the culture.

Iraq is one of the most developed infrastructure countrie I have entered in 7 years of travel. Like walking down a street in Lima Peru at night.

The history provided by this book is good reason to purchase.
The hotel and transporation advice will get you in danger.
There are lots of Hobo type hotels in all the cities I have entered so far, and not in the book.

Life in Iraq.......2003-07-20

I read this book by chance, it's title grabbed my attention. Why on earth would anyone be crazy enough to travel to Iraq (other than journalists / aid workers / soldiers)? I searched hard to find the usual travel-guide fodder: How to get into the city, what to see, where to eat, where to stay.

Instead, a large chunk of the book was given over to detailing life under sanctions. And it was done in a sensitive way. No-one who has researched Iraq thoroughly enough to write a travel-guide could do any different.

As i read, I wondered why the author had done this. Travellers don't want to read a comment of the life of Iraqis under sanctions. Or do they? Surely, anyone crazy enough to go to Iraq, and risk their life by entering a land which has been under daily bombardment for 12 years (ruled by a dictator, and now by a military occupation), would be going BECAUSE they want to see for themselves what they see every day on the news.

It is thin on hotels, and restaurants, not because the author didn't think it was important, but because Iraq itself was thin on hotels and restaurants. The sanctions killed many Iraqis, and forced more than half of the (formerly wealthy) population below the poverty line. Iraqis struggled to survive, rather than manage restaurants. The almost dead tourist industry further limited the number of hotels/restuarants.

Overall this book is a great guide to Iraq, better than any Political book. It focusses heavily on the life under sanctions, and now military occupation not because the author wants a political platform, but because the sanctions / occupation have DEFINED Iraq (more than any historical sights) over the last 12 years.

A good primer - though it's the only game in town.......2002-08-27

To my knowledge, Bradt's Iraq is the only currently available travel guide for this troubled land. It is CLEARLY written with sympathy for the Iraqi people and culture, and for me, this unexpected but effective undertone has served to help bring a human dimension to the populace of this "Axis of Evil" member nation.

In my personal opinion, U.S. military personnel and our allies (if any still exist) in the coming potential conflict will find this book valuable not only for its introduction to the Iraqi culture, geography and tourist attractions, but also because it puts a real "face" on the Iraqi people. In the end, THEY aren't the problem - Hussein and his cronies are. Whether she intended to or not, and despite her liberal undertones, the author effectively communicated this point. In that sense, the timing couldn't be better.

If you are anticipating an all-expense-paid trip to the region in the near future - try to get your hands on a copy of this book and read it. I think you'll be glad you did.

If you're going to Iraq...this book is better than nothing.......2002-06-21

Bradt always seems to do a good job of producing books for those places off of the beaten track. I'm not particularly fond of the way the book is set up nor with the overall tone of the author. She seems to be using the book as a stage to air her personal beliefs and views on the embargo and such. Maybe it is just me, but I don't see the need for that in a travel guide. The A-Z section on the archaeological sites is very good, though quite a bit seems to be copied nearly verbatim from the Middle East Blue Guide of the late 1960's. The guide is also a bit short on the ins and outs that normal travel guides have...restaurants, hotels, etc. Having said all that, it DOES provide decent information on the sites and cities of the country and a fairly thorough background on the Iraqi government and current situation. If you happen to be going to Iraq, it is the ONLY current book of this kind out there, so you'd be wise to have it. But, be warned, I don't imagine it will be long until the border guards wise up and confiscate all copies coming into the country.

Great for the beginning hobbyist.......2000-05-29

This book is nicely devided into sections pertaining the different fish families. Information is given on general husbandry, feeding and also breeding. It covers the most commonly available fishes. Another nice feature for the beginning hobbyist of this book is (IMHO) the fact that it consistently gives you the scientific name followed by the common name. The informative text is lined with nice pictures. I can recommend this book to anyone who is starting out in the hobby. For the more advanced hobbyist it is a "nice thing to have" (if you are like me are always expanding your fish library :-)) but does not add much to the information you probably already have in other publications. The main reason I bought it is because it is the first publication I found that contained a picture of Hypancistrus zebra eventhough the information about this fish is minimal at best and didn't teach me anything I didn't already know.

Great pictures, history, and trivia about snowglobes!!!.......1999-08-03

This book takes us through an entertaining tour of our past by showing us the domes found on the side of the highways.. Fantastic pictures of some more common and a few rare domes spark memories of hot summers and family excursions. Also contained are how domes are made, and what to do if you have a broken dome (don't throw it out!!) If you love these little plastic wonders, or just want a look at a more unusual collectible, check out this book.

This is for the serious gardner who wants a handy book to record garden activity weekly. Start in any season; list flower, tree and vegetable progress; plan future gardens. There is enough space for your own notes on your specialty garden, and the spiral binding allows it to lie flat. Buying it for the 2nd season, I plan to more fully utilize the additional back pages.

This book has some great games for reinforcing previously taught skills. My aide was able to easily assemble them and have plenty of materials to use with the kids. Now I know she always has something appropriate to engage the kids if they finish assignments early. I feel good knowing that the kids are doing something they see as a fun reward, but they are not spending their time idly.

This book is great for people who want to use Excel to analyze data using the statistical package and functions that Excel has to offer. The book reviews how to manuever in Excel and starts from the basics of statistics and proceeds to more advanced statistics such as hypothesis testing and regression. The book has great examples, and plenty of pictures and visual aides so that the reader does not have to guess as to what to do. The book does come with software so one can practice and have hands on experience.

Edge of Your Seat.......2007-10-15

A must read! It just so happened that my husband was working out of town when I read this book and I had some uncomfortable moments alone at night reading this one. I don't spook easily but Martin managed to give me a hard time falling asleep. The romance was steamy and sweet,and the ghost story part was spun in a believable way. I'm a Kat Martin fan in general but this one is my favorite.

Scent Of Roses by Kat Martin is a spell binding, fast paced story.

Elizabeth Conner, a family counselor agrees to help a pregnant and frightened Maria Santiago as a favor to Maria's teenage brother who she counsels. Elizabeth at first thinks what is going on in the Santiago household is just the stress from a soon to be mother. But after spending one night there Elizabeth is no longer sure.

Zack Harcourt was always the black sheep of the family. He even spent some time in prison. But he has turned his life around and is helping out at a camp for troubled teens. There he sees Elizabeth again. They weren't close in high school but now there is an attraction that cannot be ignored.

Zack is drawn into the strange and disturbing happenings at the Santiago home. He and Elizabeth join forces to get to the bottom of this mystery. They don't realize the evil they are dealing with and how close it is to them.

Scent Of Roses will keep you on the edge of your seat from page one. The suspense is first rate, the chemistry between Zack and Elizabeth is deeply moving. It's a must read for any romantic suspense fan.

Scent of Roses-Joyfully Recommended Read.......2006-08-21

Liz Conner has run into a lot in her job as a family counselor, but she's not sure what to think when Maria Santiago comes to her with the belief that she is being haunted by a little girl. She claims the ghost has warned her that her unborn child is in danger.

Maria desperately needs Liz's help because her husband believes that she is imagining the whole thing. Wanting to assist Maria puts Liz in between between two brothers that have had a lifelong feud. Carson and Zack Harcourt have hated each other since their father, Fletcher Harcourt, had brought his illegitimate son, Zack, home and tried to make him part of the family. With Zack's help, Liz attempts to discover what has Maria so terrified. Zack and Liz quickly grow closer and passion burns between them. Can they stop the forces that have been unleashed and save not only Maria and her unborn child, but themselves as well?

Kat Martin has done it again. Scent of Roses is a fast paced ride that is stirringly sensual one moment and chillingly menacing the next. Zack and Liz are characters that heat up the pages while the haunting storyline grabbed me and the twist at the ending left me totally caught by surprise. The totally dysfunctional relationship between Carson and Zack add to what is already a solidly written story. Readers who enjoy paranormal romance will want to add Scent of Roses to their summer reading list.

Repetitive & Dull.......2006-08-17

This was my first and last Kat Martin book. I gave it 2 stars since I did actually finish it even though I didn't care what happened. The good girl Liz was overly good - zero personality. Ironically, misunderstood bad boy Zack was pretty boringly good too. His love `em and leave `em reputation was not at all believable. I thought Liz sold him short throughout the book by assuming he wouldn't stay with her when all he did was stick by her. Then Ms. Martin makes a bad attempt at justifying Liz's fear. I won't go into detail for those of you still planning to read the book. I thought the writing was stiff. Ms. Martin has to over-explain the characters' every thought and action because their actions and conversations are so flat. My biggest peeve - "cloying" scent of roses. I wish I had counted how many times she repeated "cloying". Invest in a thesaurus!

Ghosts, intrigue, mystery and romance........2006-07-30

This book was fantastic! I bought it for a vacation I was going on and couldn't put it down! It's been a long time since I've found a book I was so interested in. I can't wait to read the next of the series.

This book has intrigue, mystery and romance. Liz finds herself falling in love with a Lone Wolf, Zachary Harcourt. His tall dark handsome image was what she found interesting in the beginning, even when she was in highschool. Unfourtunately, she had a run in with him in while in highschool and he also had a reputation at that. She doesn't know if she can trust him, and then again doesn't know if she can trust herself with him.

Together, they embarch on a journey to help their young friend Maria. Maria is 19 years old and pregnant, due very soon. She is experiencing paranormal events in her house which are making her feel afraid and unsafe in her own home.

Read this book, you won't regret it.
