One of The Best.......2007-10-11

I have been full time in the real estate business since 1956. This, without a doubt, is one of the best books ever written, concerning real estate. It is not only good for the new person entering real estate, or thinking about entering, it is also excellent for those that have been practicing for a good number of years. I purchased a book for each of my agents and we reviewed it page by page in subsequent Staff Meetings.

In addition I have purchased several to give away to potential agents. I want them to know what is required to be successful in this business.

This is a soup to nuts primer on how to get started and keep going. Well worth the $$ and time invested!!!

Best beginner real estate book written.......2007-05-20

As a broker, I'm always looking for new material for training my agents. This is the BEST book I've found for new real estate agents in the industry. Being a realtor is not easy, this book helps answer a lot of the questions that a new agent has. I would recommend reading this book BEFORE you decide to become an agent as it may help you with that decision. I would also recommend to read for anyone that is just startig or perhaps has been in a while but not quite making the amount of money or sales that they are happy with.

A waste of money.......2007-04-15

I thought this book was a waste of money. It was too simple, suggestions were not worth paying for. I sold it on ebay. It wasn't worth returning it to Amazon, and losing money because of the shipping.

A good beginning start.......2007-01-28

This is a good beginning start for a 'new' real estate agent. It provides a stepping stone of information and gives perspectives of what you could do in the beginning of your career. Be mindful that you are working for commission and customers is your number one goal. Having customers, being able to network and create leads are three primary necessities. Please note the strategies here are not at all canon. In other words, you need to re-adjust strategies based on your location and your situation. For instance, in one part of the book, it tells you to go with a large brokerage to get your feet wet, but that may not help if you're looking for a mentor, as many large brokerages, especially commercial ones, do not have the time nor are they interested in raising another competitor.

Overall the book is solid, in that it provides a stepping stone.

The Case of the Accidental Chaplin.......2003-08-10

I wasn't going to buy this book. Honest. But after picking up Jeffrey Vance's two compelling photo collections for Abrams on Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton (and not expecting a third), I broke down and picked up this European imprint so I'd have one for each of the triumvirate of Silent comedy kings. Now I read that Vance is releasing a new Chaplin photo volume in the fall: "Chaplin: Genius of the Cinema". Ah, well. Someone was going to get my money sooner or later.

Not that I regret buying this one. No sir. It's full of rare public and private Chaplin photos including many with the stunning Paulette Goddard (her mother appears in so many of them, you'd think she was trying to be their chaperone!) I would've preferred fewer later pictures of Chaplin with his children and more of his actual film work as Vance usually does (these are mainly restricted to a few collages.) And I did miss pictures of more celebrities (I was particularly hoping for some shots of Chaplin working with cohort Stan Laurel during their earliest theatre days.) But the personal and behind-the-scenes selection they've included here certainly adds a whole new dimension to the man behind "The Tramp".

Just to clarify, some descriptions of this book are incorrect and were probably issued before the volume went to print. There is no essay by Sophia Loren as some indicate (it's done by Sam Stourdze), and no final colour shot of Chaplin (the only colour in the whole book is some home movie clips by Chaplin's brother of "The Great Dictator".)

This volume is larger and cheaper than the upcoming Vance book and has a more personal side of Chaplin while "Genius" will probably include more text (though both books are limited in this area given their photographic nature) and focus on the professional side. Either way, take your pick. Or get both which I'll probably do...after my pocketbook recovers.

An incredible book!.......2003-02-15

This book is worth every penny and is a must for all Chaplin fans. I have been a Chaplin afficianado for many years and this generous volume contains images I had never seen before. It covers every decade of his amazing career, including very rare candids while he was still in his 20's and starting his own studio. We see him without make-up, being himself. We watch him age, decade after decade. We see him on a cruise to the Far East with Paulette Goddard and Alistair Cooke in 1936; he poses with dignitaries and legends such as Winston Churchill and Albert Einstein; and, we see him as an old, contented man, with the love of his life, Oona O'Neill Chaplin, and their 8 children.

Photos express far more than words in this book. I believe this is the first time I've seen photos that look into the eyes and soul of this film pioneer. You see him in front of and behind the camera. You see his wit and his dedication. Page after page of fascinating, incredible photographs make this an absolute must for anyone who wants a glimpse into those bygone days of the silent screen comedy.

Please note:

This book has been proven to be a fake, insofar as the so-called 'diary' is actually based on a short story written in 1895. See Jim Jackson, 'Famine Diary: The Making of a Best Seller,' Irish Review no. 11 (Winter 1991-2), p. 1-8. While some of the historical conditions is describes may be accurate, it should not in any case be read as an 'authentic' first hand account.

Gripping poignant 1st hand account of the famine's aftermath.......1999-05-05

To read Keegan's diary is to re-live the nightmare he is retelling. A schoolteacher, he had to live with the fact that his students couldn't concentrate because they were literally starving to death. In shutting down the schoolhouse he was performing a humanitarian service, but admitting defeat as well.

He then takes his bride on a journey to the new Promised Land -- America. His horror at seeing hundreds crammed into the hold of the ship, food withheld by the crew, and larceny performed constantly, comes across with such alacrity that the reader wants to rush up and punish the offenders.

The gripping tale spares no one -- the British, the greedy Irish landowners, the uncaring ship's crew -- all are painted with the honesty needed -- no Emperor's new clothes here.

Although the ending is known, throughout the book the reader keeps hoping that history will change, that the circumstances will suddenly alter, and that the suffering passengers will somehow, miraculously be comforted.

This is a very disquieting book if you have believed all the stories that the Famine was somehow brought on by the Irish, and that the emigration to America, Canada and Australia was a voluntary one.
