Has its ups and downs...........2006-02-16

I brought the latest edition of TOBudapest, two weeks after it hit Amazon.uk, to Hungary with me this past October. That being said, I was a little let down. Granted, Budapest is a city that is still changing, establishing and re-establishing itself. However, I think Time Out missed the mark on several occasions here (and I'm a huge proponent of Time Out guides).

The maps are especially erroneous. However, Time Out is once again very handy when it comes to addresses. I'd suggest buying a map upon arrival in Budapest (a good one can be picked up at a newsstand for a couple of bucks) and working in tandem with Time Out's signature style of breaking attractions up by area.

You take your chances with the nightlife, which surprises me as this is usually one of Time Out's fortes. For instance, they mentioned that, when asked, a bartender at Katapult Kazevo described their hours as "2 AM crazy, 4 AM cool, 6 AM breakfast, 8 AM 'Hello, I love you.'" However, my travel partner and I got there around 11 to find them closing up (the bartender informed us, incidentally, that they were more of a cafe than a bar). This wasn't an isolated incident, which led us to wonder if someone forgot to change the bar/club names to correspond with the correct reviews. Perhaps we can blame the fall of communism for that one.

They include a decent section on the Baths (Budapest's main attraction) and mention most of the other pertinent sights (Opera House, Oktagon Square, House of Terror, the cathedral, etc.). However, this is much more a consumer's guide to Budapest, based on the Big 3 of Wining, Dining, and Buying. While we were unable to try many of the upscale restaurants and indulge in shopping while there, the nightlife portion often steered us away from this guidebook and towards others to plan day itineraries. We did follow one of the day trips further afield with great success. And, as always, I appreciate the frankness of the editors when it comes to safety precautions, cultural and historical backgrounds (a necessity to understand in Eastern Europe, but overall I expected more from a publisher that (up until now) has never let me down.

A mix of useful recommendations and smug commentary.......2003-12-31

Bought this for a recent 5 day visit to Budapest.

On the positive side, it is very useful for finding restaurants and bars. The reviews are generally accurate. The layout of the book is fine, using the index became the primary way of locating information.

On the negative side, the book was very poor on providing what I would call 'travel' information; History of the city, places to see and do, getting around etc. I found many of the descriptions to be very condescending and patronizing and did not inspire us to visit anywhere. I gave up and bought the Lonely Planet Guide to Budapest which was much more useful.

We ended up using the two books which led to a great 5 days in Budapest!

I lived in Budapest for five months and can honestly say that this book has no equal. It educates and entertains all at once. Time Out does a great job of researching the coolest hangouts, and describes their atmosphere so you know what to expect. Whether you want restaurants, museums, galleries, or flea markets, this is the book for you!

A "Must Have" for Every Activist and Animal Lover.......2000-05-11

I've been an animal rights activist more than ten years and a former intern for a wildlife rehabilitation center. Yet, I learned more from this little book than I ever thought possible. It's filled with useful data that can be helpful in writing letters to newspapers and in debating for animal protection/rights. Bennett writes in a Gandhi-like style -- never angry or agressive. But the facts she gives us are powerful. Example: Rodeos -- "C. G. Haber, a veterinarian who worked 30 years as a meat inspector in slaughterhouses, saw scores of animals discarded from rodeos and sent to slaughter. Toughened as he was to animal suffering, the condition of the rodeos' animals sickened him. He described them as 'so extensively bruised that the only areas in which the skin was attached to the flesh were the head, neck, legs, and belly.' 'I've seen animals, he said, 'with six to eight ribs broken from the spine and at times puncturing the lungs. I've seen as much as two to three gallons of free blood accumulated under the detached skin.'" (This should convince even the most calloused rodeo fan that rodeos ARE inhumane).

Bennett has facts and data EVERYONE can use. There's info on where to stay when travelling with your pets, charities that aren't charitable to animals, how students can refuse to dissect animals in school, what to do about unwelcome wildlife "guests" in your home, and so much more. I could go on and on. I can't say enough good about this book. This one is terrific!

I find Carla Bennett's "Living in Harmony with Animals" very inspirational and helpful. It speaks from the heart and will reach many hearts too as it did mine! It's the perfect book to give a friend who loves animals but often doesn't know where to turn for answers on many issues concerning them. It's right there in that book! I also like the various pictures of Animal Rights' activists, the vegetarian recipes and also the international resources available to help animals,in the last pages of the book. I would not normally have purchased a book on such a specialized topic --- especially since Proctor and co-author Lauren Springer cover much of the same ground for my area of the country in Passionate Gardening --- but at the price I bought it, this book was a steal. Proctor is knowledgeable and opinionated, and his books are always a delight to read. Here, he covers the process of selecting and planting bulbs for long-term, self-sustaining growth and enjoyment. He divides the bulbs up by season of bloom and discusses bulbs appropriate for all areas of the country. This is a useful reference work for selecting and situating bulbs to mazimize their performance.

Proctor uses stories, pictures and great text to explain how to use bulbs in a practical way. He presents the limitations, as well as the advantages, of each kind of bulb. He is realistic about the maintenance issues involved, and does a great job of explaining the use of different bulbs in different environments around the country. He does all of this with a sense of humor that makes reading the book a pleasure.

Surviving Through Poverty.......2004-06-01

Growing up in poverty is not an easy thing to do. You wouldn't think that very many, if any, "famous people" would grow up being poor. Well, Jim Carrey is one of many who did. Growing up for him wasn't easy at all. It was always in his genes to become a comedian. But his first gig didn't go as planned, it was very disappointing. He dropped out of school at the age of sixteen, trying to pursue his career in comedy. He continued to go to the club where he was made a fool of. His comedy breakthrough came at the age of 19. His big jump off was when he got a role in a TV series, "In Living Color." This got him started for other movies such, as "Mask," and "Liar, Liar." As they all say, the rest is history.
The thing that I liked most about Jim Carrey, was that he never gave up on his dream of being a comedian. At home, everybody thought that he was the funniest person ever. But when he went to his first gig at Yuk-Yuk's, it wasn't what he thought. It was a humiliating time for him. But he didn't let that stop him. When he was a little older, he went back to that club and performed again. He then became a regular there. This proves to show you that you should never give up on your dreams. Just because you have one bad night or act, it doesn't mean you have to give up on your dream.
Something that disturbed me about Jim Carrey was that he dropped out of school. I mean, it was his own choice but then again it sends the wrong message to children. By him doing this, and kids reading it he is saying that you can still make even if you drop out of school. The thing is that we want kids to stay in school and get an education for themselves. But people make their own decisions in life. It is up to them and what they want to do in the future.

I am a big Jim Carrey Fan and reading this book I realized I didn't know as much about him as I thought i did. This biography was well written and very detailed, you get to know Jim as you go through the book, from his succeses, his failures, his life as a celebrity. you also get to know how much he struggled over the years and how hard it was for him and just how hard it is to become a comedian. I definitley reccomend redaing htis book, it is good from the minute you open and close it from cover to cover.

If you like good writing . . ........2002-07-14

Then find another book. Mr. Knelman seems incapable of painting his prose anything but purple. I couldn't get past the first chapter. There's a good book about Mr. Carrey waiting to be written; but this isn't it.

The REAL Jim Carrey.......2002-04-02

For anyone who thinks Jim Carrey led a charmed life before getting where he is today, this book is a definite read. It opens a lot of doors into understanding his acting style, why he does comedy and why he is an actor.....he lives for attention and approval, and all his fans are happy to give that to him. He came from the school of REAL hard knocks. This makes me admire him all the more for perserving in the face of multiple adversities and giving us the performances we love to watch over and over. My personal favorite of all is The Truman Show, and the Majestic is right up there too. Catching up on his old films after reading this book, and I can see where he was coming from in his life at the time. The author did a tremendous job of writing this bio and I truly thank him for shedding light on someone I thought was "just another pretty face"....a wonderful bio on Mr. Carrey. I hope he gives some thought to bringing it up to date at some point. Jim Carrey I salute you for your wonderful acting. Great book; simply great.

I read this book in 3 days because I could not put it down...this story involves an American currency trader working at an Irish bank...considering this financial implosion happened only 7 years after the Barings disaster and only 4 months after the Enron collapse, it is shocking that the largest bank in Ireland would have had such poor risk management...
