Customer Reviews:
A Charming, Unique Story of a Strange Voyage in a Small Boat.......2007-09-11
Sandy Mackinnon sets out from Shropshire in a tiny sailboat and sails and rows himself and his small boat across England, across the Channel, and across the canals and rivers of Europe to the Black Sea.
This is a fascinating journey and Mackinnon is a brilliant and charming storyteller. Although his voyage involves many privations and even humiliations, he is always optimistic, happy, and carefree--well, almost always. Mackinnon's joy and love of adventure, people, and the outdoors is highly infectious. No one will come away from reading this book with anything less than a lighter heart and a brighter outlook on life and its tribulations. Jack de Crow is witty, entertaining, and edifying. It is one of the best sailing adventure books that I have ever read and I have read very many. I highly recommend this book to every reader whether or not you are a sailor or boater. You don't need to know anything about boats or sailing to fully enjoy this wonderful book.
I have one important and heavy dissatisfaction with the book that I must air. I almost broke ranks and would have been the first reviewer to give it fewer than five stars. Mackinnon from start to finish depends on the kindness of strangers to get him through tough spots. His journey, and even his life, is saved several times by other boaters or people along the shore who give him shelter, a tow, make repairs for him, etc. etc. He simply would not have gotten more than a few miles on his own. Of course, this is part, and a central part, of the whole story and journey--trusting to your luck and to the unanticipated and unpaid assistance of strangers. Mackinnon is basically a good natured and kind hearted screw-up. He really doesn't know what he is doing or how to do it, but goes on anyway. Well this makes for a good story as Mackinnon recognizes--no screw-ups, no stories.
But I favor a tradition that values self-reliance at least in things nautical. A watery voyage requires proper craft, charts, equipment in good order, and the ability to navigate and conduct the voyage on one's own. The only excuse for seeking or accepting help from others is dire and unavoidable life-threatening emergency. Mackinnon violates these basic principles of boating, often to his peril, sometimes to the peril of others. I cannot respect this. I believe that Mackinnon should not have made this voyage, that he was morally irresponsible, and that despite the wonderful book that resulted, the overall effect may be detrimental.
One other minor problem with the book is that readers should be aware that there are many many references to English children's literature and other works that are obscure and will not be familiar, and there are no notes or explanations. This comes off as a bit pretentious and puzzling and somewhat diminished my enjoyment of Jack de Crow.
Sometimes Mackinnon can be insensitive. He glows over the beauty and wealth of Vienna--Europe's greatest city (his description). Mackinnon describes with excessive enthusiasm Vienna's glorious history, but never mentions the most important event in Vienna's history--the anything but glorious Kristallnacht. I quote from Wikipedia: "Events in Austria were no less horrendous. Of the entire Kristallnacht only the pogrom in Vienna was completely successful. Most of Vienna's 94 synagogues and prayer-houses were partially or totally destroyed. People were subjected to all manner of humiliations, including being forced to scrub the pavements whilst being tormented by their fellow Austrians, some of whom had been their friends and neighbours." I find it hard to share his insensitive enthusiasm for Vienna.
But in the end I suppose that Mackinnon is some sort of genius, a genuine free spirit, and true eccentric and cannot be held to the same standards as the rest of us.
A marvellous little book - meant to be shared........2007-06-13
A friend shared this book with me, hoping I'd enjoy it as much as he did. And I did. Being familiar with the country and the people - but not the rivers, I loved every mile of Jack De Crow's journey, laughing at almost every page at the impossible conditions that Mackinnon found himself in. As I knew they would, Mackinnon and Jack De Crow rose above it all.
I grew to love that little boat. In turn I shared with friends and family.
personal challange at its best.......2006-02-23
If you like sailing small craft and mini-crusiers and camping out, you will love this book. Most entertaining, humorous and well written.....good work Jim McKinnon !
A Wonderful Adventure!.......2005-08-25
This is my favorite sailing book. The combination of humor, insight, warmth, fascinating places, interesting people expertly sketched, odd experiences, wrecks, near death experiences, coupled with the pure joy of traveling by water, make for a very memorable book. Not only is it hard to put down once begun, it is hard not to immediately restart once finished.
A Classic is Born!.......2003-08-12
"Sandy" Mackinnon tells a tale of nautical adventure with a style that reads like a delightful mix of Jerome K. Jerome, Jean Shephard, and Monty Python. This books is so very English, though Mackinnon is Australian- it is told with love, warmth, wisdom, humanity, and with prose as crisp as Beaujolais and warm as old port. This is a very FUNNY book, but also life affirming without being pretentious. Once you start this book you will want to keep rowing through the pages as the author travels along the great rivers of Europe from Wales to Romania. This book is definitely a new classic, and ranks up there with The Saga of Cimba and Alone in the Caribbean as one of the three most evocative nautical travelogues ever written. A genuine treasure- and pleasure.

Just about everyone has heard a story about a corporate secretary or twentysomething Microsoft employee who retired early--as a millionaire--not because of winning the lottery, but because she exercised the stock options granted by her company. The fact is, many, many working Americans have access to stock and option plans in the workplace, and although it is a bit of a stretch to assume that such plans are a guaranteed ticket to riches, equity compensation can be an intelligent means for building wealth. The trick, according to Kaye A. Thomas, is understanding and handling it properly, and this is where Consider Your Options comes in.
Thomas, a veteran tax lawyer, has written a straightforward, no-nonsense, plain-language guide to getting the maximum value from your equity compensation. He begins with the basics--what stock is and how to buy and sell it, stock grants and purchases, options in general--and proceeds with clear examinations of nonqualified and incentive stock options. From there, he leads the reader through the ins and outs of exercising stock options, vesting, and employee stock-purchase plans, with an emphasis on tax implications and financial planning (an entire section of the book, for example, deals with the Alternative Minimum Tax).
"There are certain things about stock, options, and taxes that are almost never explained because every idiot knows them," Thomas writes. "Unfortunately, there are many normal, intelligent, educated adults who don't know these things--because hardly anyone ever bothers to explain them." Now that Thomas has bothered, novices and experts alike can avoid the common mistakes and poor planning that jeopardize the highest return from these benefits. --Svenja Soldovieri
Book Description
Consider Your Options provides plain language guidance for all the popular forms of equity compensation: stock grants, nonqualified options, incentive stock options and employee stock purchase plans. It tells how to avoid mistakes that can result in paying too much tax or otherwise failing to get the maximum investment return from these benefits. The book assumes no knowledge, explaining all the basic terminology and concepts from the ground up. Yet it also includes more advanced material for those seeking to render professional advice -- or evaluate the advice they've received.
The 2004 edition covers the latest tax changes and explains how they may affect your strategy in handling stock and options you receive from your company.
Customer Reviews:
Mandatory Options Reading!.......2005-10-20
Barring an extensive endeavor to compile the various option programs offered by industry on you own, Thomas' "Consider Your Options" is an extremely helpful text for both individuals new to the options sphere as well as experienced program administrators to pick up on the nuances of the various qualified and unqualified differences. Definitely a must-have for either executives or financial advisors who work with executives to use as a tool to help establish a strategy to protect and enhance their wealth. A solid addition to your desk reference library. 4 Stars.
Covers the basics, but not strategy or advice.......2003-12-30
This book is good in that it covers all the basic mechanics of stock options -- Incentive and Non-Qualified, and ESPP plans. However, this basic information can easily be found on the web or from your employer.
What is sadly lacking from this book is advice on strategy on how to manage options, e.g., ideas on when to exercise and sell. Because of this, the book is quite disappointing to me and not very useful.
If you have any stock options, GET THIS BOOK!.......2002-07-12
This is the perfect book for anyone who has any stock options or who can participate in their company's Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP). It starts very simply, and in a series of short, but complete chapters, covers the spectrum of stock ownership, vesting, ISOs vs. NQOs, the effect of AMT, and much more.
Did you know that stock purchased in an ESPP is treated by the IRS in almost the same way that an ISO is? That there is usually no long-term advantage to buying and holding Non-qualified options? That you only have 30 days to file your 83b exclusion? (If you don't know what an 83b exclusion is, you need this book).
The book does its best to explain Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), and althought this chapter fried my brain, its because of the complexities of the AMT (simplify it IRS!), not because of the book.
A must have for people with equity in their company..........2002-07-09
An excellent resource for anyone seeking to understand and be involved in planning strategies to maximize the after-tax value of your stock compensation. Covers restricted stock grants, options (ISOs & NQSOs), employee stock purchase programs (ESPP). Various areas of tax planning are covered in detail: strategies to minimize AMT, effects of early exercise thru 83b election, gifting or donating options/stock, etc.
The author describes topics in a matter that is both thorough and easy to read. The book is organized into sections devoted to specific topics making it easy to skip or skim sections that may not pertain to your particular situation (e.g. there are separate sections on NQSOs and ISOs). Additionally, the author makes good use of examples throughout the book to illustrate complex rules. This latest edition (Apr 2002) includes updated information regarding changes to tax laws as well as explanations of pitfalls that many optionees have encountered recently (e.g. ISO "wash" sales).
This book is a must have to anyone who receives a portion of their compensation in the form of equity, whether it be stock grants, options, ESPP, or any combination of these. The book is both an informative read as well as a handy resource to keep on your bookshelf. After reading this book, most people will have all or nearly all the tools & info they need to develop their own strategies for managing their stock should they so desire. For those seeking professional advice, this book serves as a great overview so that you can understand the process and ask all the right questions. I only wish I had found this book sooner :)
Best book on Options out of the four I got.......2002-01-22
Structuring a deal with two companies to work for options - and needed some advice. Bought every book that I could get my hands on 1. Consider Your Options Kaye A. Thomas (Harvard Lawyer - (male) ) GREAT! Excellent advise parceled out with just the right amount of depth - but gets to the meaty stuff. Really told me not only what I wanted to know - but other things that I didn't know I needed to know. Easy to read - learned - good stuff.
2. Better Than Money David E. Gumpert - Not as learned a book - but easy reading and focused on the employee side. Addressed several issues about negotiation of options in a hire situation
3. Pay Me In Stock Options C.E. Curtis - Hard Back - but cheap. I would not recommend - a hard read, not organized
4. Stock Options for Dummies Alan R. Simon The basics - and well done - but didn't address several of the issues that I wanted to know....How to get more ....and the psychology aspect of obtaining them.

Waste of time and money.......2003-01-22
What a disappointment! I'd expect the well-known and respected discus breeder to really share his experience, provide tips, give some helpful info, etc. Instead, we have a poorly translated and unorganized (ala TFH) coffee table book filled with fragmentary biographical memoirs and reiterations.
The same photos are repeated over and over again, and the great Dr.Axelrod is pictured and praised on almost every page (what a surprise for a TFH book!).
By the end of the book, the author is starting talking about his OBGYN practice and birth control, security at the airports and his years of medical residency. It sounds like he either got completely disoriented or was desperately trying to finish this literary nightmare.
Discus Book.......2002-04-12
I was thoroughly disappointed in this book. It seems more like a biography of E. S. Focke and his personal travels. I was not happy with the amount of technical advice concerning discus. The pictures are very good. All in all, I think I wasted money.
THE book for serious discus people!.......2000-06-25
Dr. Schmidt-Focke should have titled this the Discus Bible! This is THE book of Discus fish. His vision and groundbreaking work with this fish has taken the discus further than anyone could have imagined or DID imagine. His views, thoughts and teaching skills can be used by the beginner as well as the professional. A must have for anyone "in" the breed! Well worth every single penney you have to pay for it. Don't miss this one!
Book Description
A superb collection of field recordings and descriptions offer unparalleled access to the sounds and calls of numerous popular and less well-known birds. The book and CD provide an introduction to the sound repertoire of species living in eastern and central North America. A variety of calls from each species are included, along with an in-depth description and explanation of their significance. In addition to color photographs of the most common species, the text offers a fascinating look at the science of avian calls, making this an indispensable aid for the outdoor enthusiast.
Customer Reviews:
Great for beginners in bird songs/calls.......2007-08-08
As a novice to identifying birds by their songs and calls, I found this CD be exactly what I needed. When buying the item I was really mostly interested in the audio disk. This contains the songs as well as various calls for the common birds in the Eastern Region, and already I'm finding that I'm using the calls I've learned more than the songs to identify birds in my neighbourhood (at least at this time of year). While I initially was concerned that the number of birds the CD covers might be limited, I'm finding that learning even this number of birds is quite challenging for a novice, and a greater number of birds would probably have just confused me at this point. So while not comprehensive in terms of species, it is more detailed for each species, and I can identify most of the birds I encounter quite well. The book contains a photo of each bird and a description of the sounds it makes and when they are made, which is proving surprisingly useful since associating a "pronounciation" of the sounds seems so far an effective aid for learning the calls. Once I master volume 1 and 2, I will probably purchase a more comprehensive collection of songs, but for now I"m more than happy with this.
Fabulous for learning all the sounds of your common birds.......2005-02-14
Lang Elliott, one of the best bird recordists around, has compiled a wonderful collection of virtually all the vocalizations made by 35 species found in eastern North America. This compilation may have a limited number of species covered, but it more than makes up for this in providing so many different calls and songs for each species, and also providing the context in which each vocalization is made. For example, for the American Robin you hear the basic song, the dawn song, the low-grade alarm call, the alarm call given when a raptor flies overhead, and more! Excellent both for learning common bird sounds and for figuring out what the meaning of a particular vocalization is.

City concrete thumbs can become green thumbs with Barbara Feldt's book.......2005-08-09
Are you a concrete thumb but a wannabe green thumb? Do you yearn to have green or bloom in and around your city habitat, whether a window box, fire escape, balcony garden or around a tree in front? Perhaps you've even had a more ambitious dream to convert a back courtyard or a modest space on your roof into a private garden?
Yes, you can create your own green oasis in a concrete desert and with relatively little time, money and without a fancy landscape architect. All it takes is desire, passion and Barbara Hobens Feldt's Garden Your City.
Ms. Feldt, now an active member of the nationwide urban gardening community has been transforming neglected urban spaces into people-friendly, educational and beautiful gardens. No space is too small, dark or horrible to reclaim and put a plant "where they're not supposed to be." But she's not just a Barbara Appleseed, she's also a motivational advocate to get every scrap of unused City space gardened. In order to accomplish that. She's ready to share her gardening knowledge as based on "the best teachers of all ---desire, experience, mistakes and success." Having started her first garden on the fire escape of her Hell's Kitchen apartment, she can speak in simple terms to the untutored.
Leaving no soil unturned, she directs you through: discovering your garden space; analyzing your climate conditions; planning all elements from the planting layout, water soil requirements; basic supplies; what to plant and how to get it (economically) whether trees, plants, vegetables, herbs; how to plant, weed, compost, even how to attract birds and butterflies.
Practical-minded, she coddles you each step of the way, from guiding through how to get building approval (insurance is usually covered; it's been proven to at 15% to 20% of the selling price of coops/condos), setting up a simple journal, giving you drawings of plans you can follow and, developing a simple budget (even providing the sources to help you stay on it).
Garden your City with its charming line drawings and Barbara's voice cheering from every page, makes your garden adventure fun. It's her personal gardening journal cum bible, adapted especially for you.
She takes the mystery out of City gardening while adding the poetry. She talks of "nourishing our city ...transforming our streetscape ... reveling in the beauty you helped create ...getting back much more than you sow." As a coop owner, inspired to develop our back courtyard space, I can promise you, her book delivers what it preaches.

Book Description
The Aobo tu, the `Illustrated Boiling of Sea Water', was completed and published by Chen Chun in 1334. It is the world's earliest extant work exclusively dealing with salt production and salt production techniques. The first part of this book focuses on the technical, fiscal, administrative, social and economic background of the Aobo tu. It also provides the reader with information on the various editions and related material. This is followed by a complete annotated translation and the reproduction of two different sets of illustrations. By combining research on various aspects of the salt industry during the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) periods, a better understanding of the fiscal and economic importance of this crucial sector can be gained.

Actress and singer Lotte Lenya personified the decadence of '20s and '30s Berlin, with unforgettable roles created in collaboration with her composer husband Kurt Weill and the playwright Bertolt Brecht. Her performance as the prostitute Jenny in The Threepenny Opera (1928) became the stuff of legend.
Born Karoline Blamauer in Vienna in 1898, Lenya spent an impoverished childhood there before launching her career in Zurich and then Berlin, where she met and married Weill. The toast of the Berlin arts scene, Weill and Lenya left Germany in 1933 following the election of Hitler as chancellor. Weill was Jewish and an advocate of freedom of expression--his play Der Silbersee ("The Silver Lake"), which contained a caricature of Hitler, had already been banned by the authorities. The couple went to Paris, and then, when the threat of war in Europe became imminent, to the United States, where they both enjoyed highly successful careers on Broadway. Weill died suddenly in 1950, but Lenya carried on, tirelessly reinterpreting his and others' work; appearing onstage and onscreen (most memorably as Rosa Klebb in the 1963 James Bond film From Russia with Love), until well into later life. She died at the age of 83 in 1981.
Lenya the Legend: A Pictorial Autobiography is a fascinating book packed full of Lenya's own forthright reminiscences, interviews, and letters, lavishly illustrated with photographs of the star from her vampish Berlin cabaret days, through the glamour of her Broadway career. Published to coincide with the centenary of her birth, the book is a fitting tribute to a formidable legend. --Catherine Taylor

Book Description
After having joined the RAF in 1937, New Zealander Al Deere was in the thick of action right from the start of the war, serving with great distinction over France and Dunkirk in May and June of 1940 against the dreaded Messerschmitts. After surviving a crash-landing during a head-on attack he helped defend London and the south-east during the Battle of Britain effecting numerous escapes in tight combat situations.
He went on, variously, to command a flight in 602 Squadron, to lecture in America, to command RAF Kenley, Biggin Hill and then to lead the 145 French Wing in France before becoming Wing Commander, Plans with 84 Group. Post-war saw him take up many more significant postings including commander of North Weald, and Aide de Camp to HM the Queen. If it could be said that he 'had a good war', he enjoyed an even better peace.
Richard Smith has had the full co-operation of family, friends and colleagues in researching the source material to write the biography of this fascinating and exceptional man. The book also includes many of Deere's letters and papers on the tactics and strategy of combat, and his hitherto unpublished story entitled 'Escape'.
With a 20-page section of photographs, and appendices and original documentary material, every enthusiast of military aviation will welcome this addition to their library.
Richard C Smith's previous works include the highly rated Hornchurch Scramble and Hornchurch Eagles.
