Book Description
This book, by East-West marketing consultant Chin-ning Chu, is must reading for any Westerner in business, government, or academia who negotiates in the Orient or wants to.
It is the first to reveal to Westerners the deep secrets of the Asian psyche that influence Asian behavior in business, politics, lifestyle, and battle.
Ms. Chu points out that Asian mind games have become so finely tuned over the centuries that Americans seldom realize that Asians view the marketplace (and by extension, the world) as a battlefield, and act accordingly.
She has extracted the principles of successful negotiations from centuries-old Chinese texts that have influenced all of Asia, and provides her readers with examples of their application in the modern world.
In the Western world, the ability to formulate cunning and subtle strategies for getting your own way in business, politics, and everyday life is regarded as a matter of intuition. In Asia, however, strategic thinking is a formal discipline studied by people from all walks of life. Amazing as it may seem, contemporary Asians base their outlook and behavior on the teachings of the ancients. In China, even children are familiar with the "36 Strategies," formulated by Sun Tzu, a famous military strategist, in the fourth century B.C.
Throughout Asia today, business people as well as political figures study Sun Tzu's Art of War and apply its strategies to all their activities, while Americans read The One-Minute Manager and All I Really Need to Know I Learned In Kindergarten. No wonder, Ms. Chu comments, that when it comes to business and political negotiations, the Chinese refer to Americans with a word that means "innocent children."
Ms. Chu brilliantly analyses how Chinese thought and culture have affected Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, and how Japanese conquest and culture have had their effect on the rest of Asia.
With United States trade and political alliances shifting increasingly to the Pacific rim, it becomes ever more urgent to understand the Asian mind. Ms. Chu, born in China and educated in Taiwan, spells out the makeup of the Asian psyche as no Westerner could.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful, not just for anyone doing business in Asia.......2007-04-10
I just got back from China as an English teacher, granted I taught in a small city which automatically gave me the celebrity status, but after reading this book all I can say is I wish I picked this up before I went to China in the first place.
For those who want to understand the "Art of War" and the "36 Strategies" this is a good book to learn how it applies not only to war and business, but also to other aspects of working in China. It explained many inner workings about how things are done.
As for the "stereotypes", of course they are not 100% true. But it's a good idea to read her views on the Chinese mind set to understand some of the cultural and historical influences that are shaping China of today. Being there, I met many people older than me who still have been influenced by the Cold War and Mao's "anti-imperialist" propoganda. Many of the youths I met still hate the Japanese with a passion.
Of course, I've only read the 1988 publication of the book, so it doesn't factor in many huge changes in Chinese hisotry, such as the reutrn of Hong Kong and Macau to China or even the alliance with the Communist party and the Nationalist party in Taiwan. You will find no references to the 50 year plan of one country, two systems they use to ease Hong Kong and Macau back into Mainland territory.
My only problem with this book is that even though she writes about the many cultural problems that Westerners will face going in these countries, she doesn't give many good suggestions as to how to surmount them. To tell you the truth, if I ever go back to China, this book does sometimes make me feel paranoid not knowing who is friend or foe.
Asian Mind Game.......2005-12-15
A very informative and helpful book to understand cultures and the way business is conducted
The Asian Mind Game.......2005-09-08
Without question this is one of the most incisive books written about living and working with Asians, especially the Chinese and Japanese. Put this together with some knowledge of Group Dynamics and you will have two very powerful tools to engage in business with Asians.
Flawed but helpful.......2005-02-26
Yes, the book is unsubtle, as some reviewers have complained. And the stereotypes are exaggerated. They're also a bit dated, since the book was written in 1991 -- before China's private economy had blossomed, before Taiwan and Korea had become such important high-tech centers, and before Japan went bust.
The book also sensationalizes the degree to which people may be trying to deceive you, and the degree to which this deceit is based on your being a Westerner. Often the deceit, when it happens, is just a cultural way of dealing with embarrassment.
But when I was a beginner with Asia, I found this book a helpful eye-opener. I'd never heard of "The 36 Stratagems", which another reviewer calls tedious (this was before Asian video games based on Chinese military classics became popular here). It turned out that just about all educated East Asian people I met, men and women, knew them to some degree. The book also describes some relevant differences among East Asian cultures - a cure for the usual Western point of view that lumps Japanese, Koreans, Chinese and others all into one "Asian" category.
By now, most of my time in the past 9-10 years has been spent involved with East Asia and East Asian people. This has been at both a business and personal level, including through marriage and working for a Japanese company. From that perspective, I can also say the book's lack of political correctness and its hype about military strategy are kind of virtues.
How? On its surface, the book is about Asian-Western interactions. But underneath, the book illustrates a lot about how people from different Asian cultures regard each other, both cross-culturally and intraculturally.
Chairman Mao may have used the phrase "politically correct" from time to time, but in its current form it's a Western concept, and a recent one at that. It's also something that comes easier to the lips than to the heart or mind. My friends from Asian countries are usually more direct -- they often express quite stereotypical (and negative) views about people from neighboring countries, even when they make exceptions for individuals. More than once has some really balanced or sweet person mentioned to me after a pause, "But you know, I really can't stand people from X."
Business practices and politics often can be pretty manipulative even against colleagues within the same company. (Watch just about any Japanese TV drama about office life, if you don't have a chance to experience the real thing.) And I've run into plenty of East Asian managers and executives who think they're great strategists in the style of the Chinese classics, even though in fact they're about as clumsy as you or I would be.
Read this book with a grain of salt. But you can definitely benefit from having read it.
An interesting read.......2004-07-13
This is a frank discussion of the Oriental mind-set by an Oriental living in the US. I found the historic context quite fascinating. I had heard about the "The Art of War" and it was nice to get some background as well as a summary. I particulary liked the historic illustrations of use of the strategies.
Insights into business etiquette, social hierarchy and what to be aware of in each of the regions is given.
Since the book was written (1990) the economic miracle of Japan has stalled, so it would be interesting to get an update as to how the attitudes of workers may have changed in the intervening period where job security is no longer assured.

Just Dogs.......2001-02-08
My girlfriend and I purcahed a chocolate lab in May of 2000. This was my first dog. We searched long and hard and did a lot of research on how to choose the right pup... and we did. I had all intentions of training our new pup to be a champion hunter. I purchased many trainging items and spent many hours to make sure Bailey was going to be ready for the fall pheasant season. As the season grew closer so did the love for my new best friend. One of my co-workers at the time who also has a hunting a dog (a Llewyen Setter)gave me his copy of "Just Dogs" to read while I was away on buisness. As I strated to read the book, I couldn't put it down. After returning home, I ordered my own copy of it. It is probably one of the best bird dog books I have ever read. The more that I read the book the closer I feel to Bailey. He became my best friend the family pet and also a very good hunter. Through out the season Bailey and I were able to bag five birds (with the help of Sadie)which his first two I had mounted as a found reminder of a great day of hunting. The season has past I am sitting at home with about four feet of snow outside with my boy at my side and the MY copy of "Just Dogs" on my desk. When I get that itch and begin to think about the season to come, I begin to read the book all over again. I have probably ready the book cover to cover about five times since October of 2000. Every time I read the poems, I end up typing one of them up and framing it with a picture of my chocolate hunting partner. I recently purchased a copy of the book for my brother as a birthday present. My brother does not hunt but has two black labs, Coal and Chole, who mean the world to him. After reading "Just Dogs" he says that the book makes him feel even closer to his labs and makes him appreciate the friendship, loyalty and love that only a dog can bring. He thanks me all the time for the book and I have Gary to thank for lending me his copy along with a pheasant season that I will probably never forget. "Just Dogs" is worth every penny and more!!! You do not need to be a hunter to appreciate this book, you must possess a true love for just dogs.
Great gift for hunters who love their dogs.......2000-02-07
This is a really beautiful book, I bought it for my husband as a Valentine's day gift. It's light reading, just stories by hunters and a poem or two. The photographs are excellent, some will just make you chuckle out loud and others are simply beautiful. If you love a hunter, who loves his dog, this is a great gift. My husband enjoyed it immensely.
An evocative essay on dog's special relationship to man.......1999-10-31
Whether you have a dog (or dogs!) or just enjoy them, this book is the most touching portrait of the special relationship between mankind and its most faithful companion. From essays that make you laugh, to ones that will bring tears to you eyes, to the photographs that just warm you up inside, you will read this book more than once.

Book Description
Every autumn all over the country, students and teachers turn to the legend of Johnny Appleseed, an American folk hero popularized by Walt Disney Studios and hundreds of local events. As the republication of the classic anthology, Johnny Appleseed: A Voice in the Wilderness shows, the real man is even more fascinating than his popular persona.
Born in Leominster, Massachnusetts, in 1774, John Chapman became famous in mid-western America as a conservationist, horticulturist, hero of the War of 1812, and spiritual visionary. What most Americans do not know about this folk legend is that his inner life was the source of his remarkable personal characteristics. John Chapman lived a simple life, in harmony with nature and at peace with local Native American tribes.
By his ownb account, Chapman was influenced by the 18th-century Enlightenment scientist and spiritual visionary Emanuel Swedenborg, and he became a one-man wilderness lending library of Swedenborg's writings, passing out unbound signatures and treatises to pioneer families whom he met in his journeys through Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. He would enter settlements like a town crier, proclaiming enthusiastically, "Good news fresh from heaven!"
Known as the "St. Francis of the frontier," John Chapman loved animals and provided for horses whose age and infirmities would otherwise have marked them for death. And, according to a report in his own day, he himself "seems to be almost independent of corfporeal wants and sufferings. He goes barefooted, can sleep anywhere. . . and lives upon the coarsest and most scanty fare. He has actually thawed the ice with his bare feet."

In Reaching for the Stars , Mary Roslin Williams analyzes what qualities make a good breeder and the problems they have in reaching the top of their field.
Customer Reviews:
What an amazing book!.......2004-06-25
I cannot more highly recommend this book if you are interested in breeding or showing Labradors. It is a godsend! Every Lab fancier should read this book. It made me seriously rethink my decision to show and breed Labradors, and I definitely recommend it to novice exhibitor and expert breeder alike.
Reaching for the Stars - a Must Have for the serious breeder.......2003-08-25
Finally, a dog breeding book that goes beyond the more simplistic aspects of dog breeding. This book breaks breeders into seven categories, from beginner through top breeder and outlines the pitfalls encountered at each level and what it takes to become a good or top breeder. The author is not concerned with the how-tos of breeding a litter, rather she concerns herself with the topics of why breeders fail and leave the sport, how to keep your kennel size manageable and how to breed a Labrador that is as at home in the field as it is in the showring.
This book was incredibly helpful and insightful, although one has to overcome the author's incredible bias towards the British, while condemning the Continental and American ways of doing things at every turn.
I would sincerely recommend this book to anyone who has already read the "how to" books and is looking for more in-depth information about other aspects of breeding.
Reachign For The Stars.......2001-06-28
Excellant view of breeding in England. If you are considering becoming a breeder this will make you look at some hard choices you may have to make about keeping your own stock down to a manageable number.
A great read, the author is obviously an expert in her field and an entertaining writer too.
If your looking for genetics info it isn't here, this book is written from an older pre-genetic perspective.
A "Must Have" for the serious dog fancier........2001-03-14
If you could only have one book to guide you as a serious breeder and/or canine judge, this would be it! All the knowledge, experience and wisdom is contained in this one book and all you have to do is absorb it. Don't be put off by her Laborador Retriever background, the information pertains to all breeds. I only wish I had read this book 10 years ago.
A facinating read and highly informative.......2000-04-20
Learing about the five stages of the development of a dog breeder and exhibiter was mind boggling. Mary Roslin Williams is an excellent story teller and her knowledge cuts across all breeds. With the added information bringing the book up-to-date and adding famous dogs and breeders from around the world has made this book even more valuable.

Customer Reviews:
Pure Luxury, Simplified.......2005-04-27
I'm quite confused by the reviewer who indicated that this book is filled with extremely difficult and time-consuming industrial techniques. I think she may be reviewing an entirely different book! On the contrary, the recipes here are easy, accessible, and suitable for beginners of all ages and skill levels. In fact, the instructions for the vast majority of the recipes are along the lines of, "Combine the ingredients in a prepared container and blend well." The most "complicated" of all the recipes merely involves melting ingredients in a double-boiler or microwave. Many other books with do-it-yourself recipes are challenging; this really is not one of them.
As an aromatherapy educator, a natural health and beauty product fanatic, and a make-your-own products junkie, I love this pretty book filled with simple recipes and beautiful treatments. I must have a dozen books on creating natural beauty products at home, but I find myself turning to this one again and again, not only for the variety and simplicity of the recipes but for the gorgeous, pampering results!
The book is organized into groups of recipes for the face (masks, toners, moisturizers), body (cleansers, scrubs), hands & feet (creams, balms, nail conditioners), and hair (shampoos, conditioners, herbal rinses). The "face" section also features a wonderful assortment of fun and easy tooth powders, mouthwashes, and lip butters, too.
A chapter on getting started introduces ingredients, preparation techniques, and gets the reader comfortable with the highly addictive process of creating all-natural alternatives to chemical-laden and outrageously priced commercial lotions and potions. A glossary defines terms, and a list of resources provides ideas for where to purchase the items called for in the recipes, although this should not be a problem. Most items are very easily found at grocery or natural health stores (spices, herbs, essential oils, oats, sweet almond oil, witch hazel, rose water, and the like).
Some of my favorite treats include Almond & Jojoba Lip Butter, Cinnamon & Clove Mouthwash, Sweet Citrus Body Polish, Sandalwood & Lavender Hair Treatment Gel, Lemon & Rosewood Hand Oil, Rose Geranium Bubble Bath, Herbal Bath Sachets, and many, many more.
Your skin, hair, and nails will thank you for getting this book.
GREAT! book I ever read.......2000-06-23
The book's clear instructions and color photographs are excellent. However, procedures used are extremely time-consuming and require a lot of hands-on work. Basically, they're industrial techniques adapted for home use. Entirely different from making cold process bar soaps. Even for experienced hot process soap makers, at least 3-4 hours are needed to complete the initial phase. In the recipes, you have to be comfortable with using solvents and thickeners. Neutralizing and sequestering agents too. pH control and preservatives can be significant issues as well. Aside from that, you won't find a better consumer-level book on this interesting subject. GREAT book!

Book Description
Concerns have resurfaced about a possible world capital shortage in the next decades and a subsequent rise in long-term interest rates. On the surface, the signs look ominous. In OECD countries, there has been a long-term decline in saving rates, public sector indebtedness has reached alarming levels, and populations are aging rapidly. Outside the OECD area, there appears to be considerable potential demand for capital to meet the investment needs of post-communist Europe and the dynamic emerging economies of the Asia-Pacific region. This report examines how likely a capital shortage might be through an assessment of the long-term outlook for saving and investment in the major economic regions of the world and explores some of the key policy issues involved.

Book Description
Everyone knows him as Ralph Cifaretto on the HBO hit show The Sopranos. But before Tony, Carmela, Silvio, and Dr. Melfi took Sunday-night television by storm, Joe Pantoliano was one of America's busiest actors, giving unforgettable performances in such films as Memento, The Matrix, The Fugitive, and Risky Business. Now, the street-smart kid who grew up in Sinatra's hometown shares the stage with the eccentric and colorful wise guys from his family and neighborhood.
Fade in on the projects of Hoboken, New Jersey, during the fifties and sixties. That's little Joey, running numbers with his chain-smoking mother, Mary, so they can keep a roof over their heads. When he wasn't busy staying one step ahead of the bill collectors, he was learning the ropes from "Cousin" Florie: his "stepfather" and a wise guy whose connections to the Genovese family couldn't keep him out of jail for drug trafficking. Then there was Joey's real father, "Monk," a factory worker with a weakness for gambling at the track who was later reborn as a hearse chauffeur for the local funeral parlor.
With a winning blend of humor, charm, and pure showmanship, Pantoliano tells it like it was. From a connected Jersey street kid to a successful Hollywood actor who would, ironically, re-create his wise-guy boyhood in role after role, Who's Sorry Now is an irresistibly entertaining treat for anyone interested in this true-life "Soprano" and a real stand-up guy.

Right on the money..........2004-11-13
I'm a little late weighing in here, I just bought the book earlier this year and just now got around to reading it. Anyway, as an Italian American with an extended family that "got off the boat" in Hoboken, NJ, and as someone who ran some of the same streets that Joey once did, I can totally identify with the way Joe Pantoliano grew up and with the cast of "characters" that comprised his family, friends and neighbors. The book was extremely entertaining and written in a way that had me laughing out loud more than once. It's admirable that Joey expresses no bitterness or self-pity -- I think this is partially because people of his generation, in that place and time, just accepted the fact that family was the way it was, you didn't sit around feeling sorry for yourself, you just dealt and made a life for yourself! Also, in spite of the dysfunctionality, there was love there for Joey and I guess he chose to focus on that, whether it's just a trait he's been blessed with or if a little therapy helped him get there, it's still admirable and wonderful that he is able to see that & rejoice in it. I can understand how someone not from this subculture would see his mother and some of the other people in the book as complete monsters or animals but remember their shortcomings didn't come from an intention to be cruel, it came from the difficulties they faced as largely uneducated immigrants or children of immigrants starting with nothing in a new land. They were people who were weak and maybe more corrupt than most but not totally evil. If they knew better they would do better, so to speak. It's also nice to see the real, un-glamorized version of what it means to be a wise guy -- no mansions, Mercedes or limos for these connected guys. All in all, I enjoyed the book and read it practically in one sitting, the way the plot flowed was a little bit uneven and the writing style was a bit weak in spots which is why I give it a four instead of a five. But the story itself and the way Joe's viewpoint really came through, make it a good read for anyone who is fan of his work.
family life.......2003-07-30
The best part about this book is the author's unique voice. It's creative and to the point. The way he describes things carries the book.
The story itself is an interesting one, but it's more about his dysfunctional parents and their marriage than about the author. His mother is quite a trip. He had a rough time growing up but goofy as some of them were, his extended Italian family was a strong source of support and I think that's why he didn't drown in his parents' craziness.
This story is not about the mafia, although some people in it apparently have some bad connections. It's about a boy growing up in a close-knit, somewhat goofy family in 1960s New Jersey. And there's a lot of great insight into the family members and their peculiarities that makes it well worth the read.
A true Paisan'.......2002-12-17
I feel like I grew up with Joey Pants. His family is my family! I picked up this book because he played in one of my all time favorite movies, "Goonies," and I new his face, but not his name. He's just one of those kind of actors. I don't mind saying that I hate him in the Sopranos, 'cause who doesn't? But after reading this book, even I am proud of what he made of himself. And it has restored my faith in my own abilities. I now must write a book about my verbally abusive Italian-American man-hating mother. Although his family had problems, you still get the sense that in the end they all sit around toasting to love and family like the last scene in Moonstruck! It's a quick read and you'll love it!
Making it a love story.......2002-12-13
My brother got me this as a birthday gift - not something I would have bought myself. I figured it was one of those books where someone is cashing in on their current fame. It wasn't - it is an inner glimpse at a totally disfunctional family that I couldn't put down. Joey Pants was always one of those actors you love to hate - after reading this I can see where he got his inspiration - his nutsy Mommy (I have to admit I get a little uneasy reading about a guy in his 50's who still refers to his mother as Mommy). From this I have great admiration for Joey now - it is amazing what he overcame - the very things that would have caused most people to give up and accept their existance - inspired him to seek a better life. Anyone wishing to see the day-to-day live of a Goomba growing up in Jersey should grab this - a great read!
We are Joey ... sorry we bought the hype.......2002-10-30
I was lured by the bait of his Ralphie persona, the Imus interview and a good excerpt on Amazon, but the life of an insecure little fat kid is not charming. Mommy was a gangster's daughter who browbeat her poor husband and was ready to cheat anyone including her young son. Some of the "Cousin" Florie stories were ok, like hijacking the Seagram's truck from the Hoboken ferry, but a book? Fuggedaboutit!

Book Description
This first biography of Richard, third duke of York, is a case study of the political opposition of a great lord to the regime of Henry VI. Focusing on the increasing isolation of a once loyal subject, the book includes the first evaluation of Richard's two effective periods as Protector of
England, and presents fresh evidence on the events surrounding the War of the Roses and Richard's unsuccessful claim to the throne in 1460.
