Wide Variety of Mexican Cuisine Well Covered in Another Helpful World Food Entry.......2006-07-18
What has been perceived to be Mexican cuisine in this country - tacos, burritos, enchiladas - touches only the tip of the iceberg that represents the fulsome epicurean delights that await lucky visitors to that country. Fortunately, Lonely Planet saw fit to add Mexico to their line of World Food pocket guides, which have become almost as indispensable as their main country tour book titles. Author Bruce Geddes, a Toronto-based Mexicana aficionado, provides useful information about the surprisingly complex food culture south of the border, though with less emphasis on a historical perspective versus other entries in the series. I don't think he has as comprehensive an understanding of the culture he covers as others have displayed in the series.
Nonetheless, he spends an ample amount of space on Mexican staples and specialties, as well as the highly distinctive regional variations from the moles and chapulines (grasshoppers) of Oaxaca to Veracruz's incomparable seafood. The sections that resonate the most are the detailed descriptions of the expansive markets located in the major cities, including invaluable advice on what to look for and what to buy; a personal profile of Laura Esquivel, author of "Like Water for Chocolate"; the components of a Mexican banquet; and the city maps highlighting his favorite eateries. There are interesting thumbnail inserts on nueva cocina mexicana (new Mexican cuisine), a visit to a sleepy town called Bustamante famous for their breads and mezcal, and a history of the traditional watering holes called pulquerías.
I was fortunate enough to take lessons from chef Iliana de la Vega at her superb restaurant, El Naranjo, in Oaxaca, so I was able to use this book to guide me through the ingredients she had us use to prepare our specialty dishes. The book is truly invaluable for its definitive culinary dictionary, quick-reference glossary and the lengthy list of useful phrases necessary when ordering food and drink there. As with the other World Food books, there is an abundance of wonderful photographs to help you visualize the food, locales and people. In short supply unfortunately are truly distinct recipes. Regardless, this is a fine guidebook to have when exploring the best that Mexico has to offer for the palette.
Who fact-checked this thing??.......2006-05-18
This book is terrible, riddled with mistranslations, gross generalizations, and mystifying pseudofacts. A lovely idea, with poor execution.
Lonely Planet could do better.......2001-05-30
Since I've relied on Lonely Planet books to travel around Mexico and South America, I thought this book would give me a real "inside" look at the food of Mexico. I was definitely disappointed. It doesn't contain any information that I didn't already know from traveling in Mexico and reading Mexican cookbooks. In fact some of the information it did give was wrong - for instance, Salsa Verde is not made with Green Tomatoes - It's made with Tomatillos -a totally different fruit.
A splendid introduction to Mexican food, travel & history........2000-07-03
Lonely Planet World Food Mexico is the first guide to provide an introduction to Mexican travel and history through a focus on the food and drink of Mexican regions, pairing a culinary dictionary and focus on regional specialties with travel advice. The combination places this pocket tote somewhere between travel and cook book, but will prove especially delightful to food fans - and with its useful built-in dictionary and phrase book, essential to independent travelers.
Hot Donitas.......2000-05-28
Useful phrases for drunken apologies and much more, does not do justice to the colorful books in the new series, World Food, from the Lonely Planet guidebook people. These are pocket-size books, brimming with food history, folkways, the inside scoop on menu deciphering, food markets, and restaurants as well as excellent overviews of the culture behind the cuisine of each country visited. Couch Potato-down with the 11-book series at home, or toss the one on Mexico in your pack and go find the hottest donitas in Mexico City.

Book Description
An anthology for courses dealing with great power diplomacy in the 19th century, this book raises crucial questions in the history of European foreign relations and seeks to address those questions through excerpts from the documentary record. Included are sources from conference protocol, and treaties as well as from previously untapped sources such as speeches, diary entries, and correspondence. Half the documents included have been translated into English for the first time. Each chapter is introduced by a brief paragraph placing that chapter in a larger historical context. Each document, or group of documents, comes with a head note that introduces the reader to the debates that document has generated and provides a point of departure for discussion or independent research. The text includes maps and concludes with a bibliographical essay that discusses issues of historiography and provides an extensive list for further readings.

an excellent and well-researched look at the 19th century.......2004-05-03
This book is perhaps one of the most well-researched and well thought out looks at European diplomacy of the 19th century. The author shows that he took great pains in acccessing primary sources, all of which provide for in-depth and unique perspectives on the issues of the day. A must read for anyone interested in the time period.

European History at its finest.......2006-12-17
This is truly one of the best textbooks I have ever read and I would even recommend it for popular consumption. Rich writes very clearly and in excellent detail talks about how the great powers of Europe interacted. He covers the period from the congress of Vienna to the start of World War 1. Some of the major issues he touches upon are the Crimean war, rise of Germany and unification of Italy, Mexican American war, Spanish American war and the Balkan wars which led to World War 1. He also analyzes diplomacy during this period to understand how people like Metternich and Bismarck worked to keep the world out of war. The rush for colonization in Africa is addressed as are problems in Asia like the opium war. This is an excellent read that I cannot recommend enough.
Informative but a sleeper........2006-09-12
This is a good book. I learned plenty about European political history during the 19th Century. High School just did not provide information on that era. I cannot give this book a bad review. But I always found myslef putting it down or falling asleep to it. Rich knows the subject well. The book does not lack information or knowledge you will learn plenty with the purchase of this book.

Very useful book - faulty cover!.......2007-09-01
The book is a comprehensive review of 6Sigma tools and 6Sigma Project management life cycle. Hard reading. Recommended if there is no fault with the book! This suppose to be a new book from amazon.com I can not send it back as this is very heavy and I need it!!
Book " Implementing 6 sigma: Smarter solutions using statistical methods".......2007-05-26
Excellent condition of the book, as they mentioned, it arrived on time according to what the deal was, this is an excellent vendor
The must-have on every six sigma shelf.......2006-11-12
I have been using this book for the past few years and it continues to be the most valuable Six Sigma resource on my bookshelf. It is the most complete and practical Six Sigma book you will find, and worth every dollar. Every six sigma black belt I have worked with owns a copy of this book
This book is absolutely packed with useful examples - providing you with both the formulas to solve the Six Sigma tests, and also the solutions.
This is a manufacturing-centric six sigma book. If you are dedicated to service application of six sigma, I would recommend reading "Six Sigma for Transactions and Service."
If you are interested in learning about six sigma, or are a green-belt or a process improvement or enterprise modeler, this probably isn't the book for you. However if you are a black belt and apply six sigma methods on a consistent basis, this is a must-read ...
Implementing Six Sigma Review.......2006-02-28
I have read multiple books on Six Sigma, but "Implementing Six Sigma", is by far the most practical with a perfect balance of statistical concepts and everyday examples. Finally, there is a book that can show Executives, there is a better way, a true management system that links strategic objectives to bottom-line results. This book is a must for all Six Sigma practioners.
This is the only Six Sigma book you will need.......2006-02-26
This is the only Six Sigma book that covers all aspects of the methodology. You will not find another book that analyses every aspect of Six Sigma so deeply and yet, in a way that makes it so easy to understand.
As a professional of Six Sigma, I have been through every book about the subject that deserves attention but none of them comes anywhere close to Breygogle's "Implementing Six Sigma". Not only does the second edition cover the Lean methodology, but it also delves into the Theory OF Constraints and very clearly shows how it can be used for Six Sigma project selections.
No wonder why this book is the only one recommended by ASQ for their Six Sigma Black Belt preperation and no wonder why Breyfogle won the Crosby Medal.
Great book! I give it a 5 plus.

Product Description
Will I See Fido in Heaven?", by Christian author Mary Buddemeyer-Porter, has been recommended by Christian ministers throughout the U.S. and abroad including the current Jack Van Impe Television ministry as being reputable and praiseworthy in revealing that non-human animals have eternal life according to the Bible. This concise 124 page book covers many Scriptures from 29 Books of the Bible and includes quotes from the Dead Sea Scrolls Uncovered, the Jewish Scripture, commentary from noted theologians and fourteen wonderful true-life animal stories. Years of research went into establishing the accuracy of "Will I See Fido in Heaven?" delving into the original Greek and Hebrew translations covering such topics as the innocence of animals, their obedience to God, their intelligence and sacrifice for mankind and the understanding of symbolism as it applies to man and animals. Understanding the eternal soul and spirit of man and beast and the importance of the Holy Spirit for man's salvation is explained in simple but profound terms. "Will I See Fido in Heaven?" gives the reader unquestionable knowledge that all animals do go to heaven.

pet bereavement.......2007-07-30
This is a very good book with scriptural basis. The cover brought snickers from people who saw me reading it. I would make the cover more of a Biblical study of animal spirits surviving death.
This book brought me comfort.......2007-04-18
After losing my beloved yellow lab to cancer last year, I was seeking comfort to know that this loving companion surely did not perish with death. This book explained many verses from different versions of the Bible showing that our beloved pets and all of creation will survive death and receive the blessing of eternal life in Heaven. After reading this book, I feel assured that I will see my best friend "Max" in Heaven.
Best animal theology book EVER!!.......2006-11-10
If you could buy only one book on animal theology, this would be IT! It totally changed my attitude toward not just our companion animals, but for ALL of creation. I now see that ALL of creation is sacred. This is a well researched and well wrotten book. I recommend it most highly! It belongs on everyone's bookshelf.
Wonderful comfort.......2006-07-14
We lost our wonderful dog, Jasmine, just a few weeks ago. I've always believed that God created animals with the intention that they be eternal creatures, but "Will I See Fido in Heaven" conveniently listed the scriptures to prove it.
My only complaint with this book is that it heavily quotes from the 'extra' books from the Catholic Bible, which the vast majority of Bible scholars agree are not part of the Bible.
It does beautifully explain that since animals do not have a sin issue of their own that they do go to heaven, unlike humans, who must deal with their sin issue by admitting it exists and acknowledging that Jesus died because of it to cover our sins and gives anyone who asks access to His gift.
Writtten with Biblical detail and a heartfelt yearning for the truth.......2006-02-25
Fantastic! She supported the question of whether animals go to Heaven using Biblical quotes and passages. Since the Bible is my resource for Life and God's true Word, i found such consolation -that since He breathed life into all man and animal, all life awaits Man's Salvation to enter Heaven. Since animals dont have original sin like man, they enter Heaven regardless, whereas mans only way to enter Heaven is by receiving Christ as our Lord and Savior and following the Word of the Bible.
Book Description
The 1939-1940 New York World's Fair promised a new age of global communication, nationwide superhighways, and suburban livingand it delivered. Crafted by designers such as Walter Dorwin Teague, Norman Bel Geddes, and Raymond Loewy, the twelve-hundred-acre fair in Flushing Meadows sold visitors a streamlined world of consumer goodsteardrop cars and smoking robots, electric dishwashers and nylon stockingsmanufactured by companies such as Westinghouse, General Motors, and AT&T. In New York's 1939-1940 World's Fair, insightful narrative accompanies dazzling postcards, advertisements, and illustrations of Democracity, Futurama, the Lagoon of Nations, and the famed Trylon and Perisphere, recalling the promise and optimism of a fair that enchanted forty-five million visitors.

Yesterday doesn't look too good.......2006-02-25
Well over half a century ago now and the greatest Fair of them all still captures the imagination. Everything was just right in 1939 for this wonderful extravaganza of streamline architecture and the promise of new products and processes to make things available for all on every Main Street. This postcard history does its best to capture the optimism of the Fair but unfortunately I don't think it does a very good job.
Most of the cards in the book were originally color illustrations of the various pavilions and sites. This type of graphic product used bright garish colors and frequently created shapes of buildings and outdoor scenes with color only. The cards, as reproduced in the book, just don't work in black and white, while the few postcards that were originally photographs, either in color or black and white look fine. You can see plenty of these bright cards on Fair websites in color or search out Herbert Rolfes 'The 1939 New York World's Fair in Postcards' (ISBN 155562068X) which has fifty-two full color cards and wonderful they look.
Two excellent black and white photobooks are 'The New York World's Fair 1939/1940 (ISBN 0486234940) with 155 photos by Richard Wurts with excellent coverage and detailed captions and a coffee-table book by Paul Van Dort '1939: New York World's Fair Photo Collection' (ISBN 0972646809) 150 pages with 271 photos. This book, amazingly, is priced at $19.95 with Andrew Wood's book list priced at $19.99 for less pages and pictures. Incidentally you can get the Van Dort book from the author, just put his name into Google or A9 and click World's Fair on his website.

Book Description
The primary witnesses of the writings called Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament are, in great majority, of Christian provenance. It has been customary for scholars to look for an originally Jewish form of the documents, reflecting Jewish life and thought in the period between 200 BCE and 100 CE. In this volume, M. de Jonge argues that these writings should, first of all, be studied as documents relevant for Christians.
This volume incorporates essays written earlier by the author as well as a number of new chapters. The first part deals with general questions concerning the transmission of the pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament whereas the second part has a particular focus on the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs and the Greek Life of Adam and Eve.
Book Description
In her remarkable 62-year career, Katharine Hepburn starred in over 40 films, appeared in over 10 Broadway plays, and was nominated for 12 Academy Awards, winning four. Her relationship with actor Spencer Tracy is one of Hollywood's most famous romances; it lasted 25 years until Tracy's death in 1967-never mind that Tracy was married to another woman. In her life Hepburn was an icon of feminism and New England-style forthrightness; as an artist she was a national treasure. Hepburn's death on June 29, 2003, at the age of 96 did little to silence the almost -century-long conversation about her. But one topic remained taboo, despite Hepburn's reputation as being fearlessly honest. Was Katharine Hepburn a lesbian? This biography directly addresses and documents the numerous accounts of Hepburn's lesbian affairs, including her relationships with Laura Harding, Jane Loring, Elissa Landi, Irene Mayer Selznick, Phyllis Wilbourn, and others. In addition, it provides an eye-opening re-examination of the star's most noted "love affairs." Parrish details how Hepburn spun her relationship with billionaire Howard Hughes to appear to be a romance, when in fact it wasn't, and most explosively reveals what caused Hepburn to accept a masochistic, platonic relationship with alcoholic, bisexual actor Spencer Tracy, and to allow it to be characterized as one of the "great loves of the twentieth century." Extensive research and interviews with numerous friends, journalists, and acquaintances separate myth from fact to reveal the real, sometimes conflicted, frustratingly complicated, and always amazing woman behind the painstakingly self-crafted image.
James Robert Parish is the author of 20 books on Hollywood, including biographies of Whoopi Goldberg, Gus Van Sant, Rosie O'Donnell, and Whitney Houston. He lives in Los Angeles.
Customer Reviews:
Kate the Great was gay.......2007-05-14
In my lifetime the two female Hollywood stars to elicit the most attention were Marilyn Monroe and Katharine Hepburn. In many ways the two were polar opposites. Vulnerable, soft and feminine Marilyn seemed to need a man's protection. Angular and feisty Kate on the other hand, didn't need anybody's help. She could get along by herself just fine. Hepburn would have been 100 years old this year and books are still being written about her. Since her death there has been a lot of talk about her sexuality. I did not realize that there was more than one "Kate-was-gay" book. I thought I was buying KATE--THE WOMAN WHO WAS HEPBURN when I bought this one. I'll probably get around to reading that one eventually, but in the meantime I was quite pleased with KATHARINE HEPBURN: THE UNTOLD STORY. I was expecting something sensational and salacious, but Mr. Parish's book is actually quite respectful of its subject and made Hepburn far more human to me that I had imagined her. In all the other books about her I have read she has been depicted as sailing from one triumph to another, with no real problems other than studios who regarded her as "box office poison" after some unsuccessful films. Parish examines what it was that actually made her "box office poison" in the minds of the public. Of course, the elephant on the coffee table was that Kate was mannish and no doubt many people assumed she was a lesbian at a time when it was not so cool to be one. I think Parish offers compelling evidence that Hepburn was at least bisexual and names names when it comes to her girlfriends. I didn't find it at all farfetched.
But what I really liked about the book was the depiction of the competitiveness that Hepburn demonstrated both in her personal and professional life. For example, in her early Hollywood years she was quickly crowned the queen of RKO. But after a lot of flops she was dethroned by none other than Ginger Rogers. Ms. Rogers was also feisty, but she, unlike Hepburn, came across as feminine. The success of Rogers, with her working-girl image, galled patrician Kate and perhaps sheds some light on Hepburn's famous analysis of the Astaire-Rogers partnership: "she gave him sex; he gave her class." And although Kate did probably prefer the company of woman, there were men in her life and several times she lost them to other women, most notoriously in the case of her losing Leland Hayward to Margaret Sullavan, who referred to Hepburn as "that dykey bitch." Despite all the bravado, she was plagued with certain doubts and insecurities after all. She had a discreet facelift before the filming of ON GOLDEN POND.
This is, on the whole, a well-written book, despite some sloppy editing. There are a lot of typos and one glaring misuse of the subjunctive. But Hepburn aficionados will find it quite provocative. Four stars.
Unprofessional.......2007-04-20
Groundless, biased assertions couched in meanspirted prose. The author appears to really dislike Hepburn, and that is neither professional nor engaging for the reader. A good biographer should 1) be able to substantiate sweeping claims, especially about a subject's sexual life, and 2) maintain a neutral tone when writing about the subject, no matter how distasteful the biographer finds the actions of said subject. This author has done neither. Don't waste your time with this book even at the library.
Even one star is too generous........2006-10-20
Parish's efforts are nothing more than a re-hashing of everything you already know. It certainly isn't the "untold story" the book jacket promises. Clumsily written and boring, Parish should have enlisted the aid of a better editor. One case in point: a good editor would have checked facts and known there is no such place as Tavasoon (where he notes they filmed part of "The Lion in Winter"), the town is actually called Tarascon. This book is pure drivel. Don't bother wasting your money.
Ruined By Rumor Mongering.......2006-06-16
I was thrilled to find a new biography of Hepburn because she's such an intriguing personna. In this book, however, Parrish puts forth many rumors and hearsay as fact without bothering to back them up. This ruined what could have been an interesting bio for anyone curious about the Katharine Hepburn outside of the stage lots. Save your money and look elsewhere.
Don't believe the jacket!.......2006-05-03
The books jacket says that it is well researched. In fact it is, but all the stuff about Kate and being bisexual is a matter of opinion. He never gives concrete information and uses what he does find he twist around to work in his favor. Although it is a good book for Kate facts, don't believe anything about her being bisexual.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Read!.......2006-08-01
Her life and her stories are so interesting and the way she tells them makes you almost hear her voice while reading the words. Her phrasing is almost like stream of consciousness (not like Virginia Woolf-stream of consciousness, just very fragment-y, incorrect grammar, etc.) I got the feeling that what she allows the reader to learn about is only a small fraction of what she really knows and has experienced in her life, not to mention that the stories are more than likely a little one-sided at times, as if the other person in the story, if you could talk to them, would have a completely different version of the same event. But that's part of the attraction of the book for me.
Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot on Spencer Tracy, and leaves a bunch to the reader's imagination in that department (Spencer was married to someone else the entire time they were a "couple" and she alludes to the fact that they spent time living together; how did this work?). But you definitely pick up on her absolute reverence for the man and their relationship, which is why she doesn't reveal much.
Overall it's a fascinating glimpse inside the workings of one of America's most famous, most talented, most enigmatic actresses with SO many quirks and interesting ideas and beliefs about life.
You could hear her voice!.......2006-06-30
Katharine Hepburn was an amazing American actress and icon. Although you wouldn't think so reading this book, Kate doesn't think of what she does as anything to be ashamed of or boast about. I could still see her in the documentary after this book came out. She said Oscars are nice but they won't garden for you or something like that. She was a remarkable human being. I just have one criticism. She left out the Golden Pond but she also left a very nice page to her devoted platonic secretary, personal assistant and companion, Phyllis. I thought it was so touching that she wrote something so nice about her. It can kind of gives you goosebumps to the amazing person that she was. Sadly, she discovered her brother's dead body from a suicide. Her struggles as an actress and her relationship with the love of her life, Spencer Tracy, is also there for the audience. She clearly loved him so much and yet, they could teach today's celebrities a thing or two about being discreet but they were truly movie stars and gifted actors beyond my comprehension. Katharine, we miss you and this book provides us some of your voice.
A great book according to Homer Simpson.......2006-01-17
One of Homer Simpson's favorite books, along with TV Guide and Son of Sniglet.
Wonderful Book!.......2005-10-18
I have not yet finished this book, but so far I love it! The only reason I picked this book up was because I thought Katharine was related to Audrey Hepburn! Once I found out she wasn't, I was disappointed. But I decided to continue to read it. It is very good and I will be sad when it ends. I found it a bit dull a first when she was telling about her family, but when I got furthur in, it was very exciting.
Forthright and honest.......2005-10-05
"Kit! Kathy is in the top of the hemlock!
"Yes, I know. Don't scare her. She doesn't know that it's dangerous."
That exchange between a concerned neighbor and a small girl's mother offers a telling glimpse into the childhood Katharine Hepburn's parents gave her. Being adventurous - physically as well as intellectually - was simply expected.
No one should pick this book up expecting a conventionally structured, conventionally worded autobiography. Miss Hepburn tells her life's stories as if her readers were sitting down for a visit. She moves through her long life in approximately linear fashion, but she never sticks to a timeline when doing that would keep her thoughts from flowing freely. She's frank without being vulgar, and she describes her own behavior - including those times when it was less than admirable - in forthright, honest terms.
An interesting look into the mind and heart of one very interesting person.

Amazingly clear high quality photos.......2004-05-06
Not a book with all full page photos,b ut you won't have to squint to see any of these either.
Picked up this hardback on sales a week ago. Great book, with gorgeous pics. I am not a huge fan of her at all. Though I am in love with a few of her films from her early days (with Cary Grabt and Spence) But I did like a few of her films.
These photos are very high quality and this book is a must at this price.
Even if you don't think you want a picture book of Kate (which is what I thought) page through it you may find you have to have it since it is less than $10. It is a great addition to my high quality portrait book collection. Almost all of the photos are of a young beautiful Kate too. Not jammed full of old lady photos (it only has a few at the end). No offense I just pref. glamour portraits and wanted to assure others that do as well.
Kate is Stunning!.......1998-08-24
If you love Kate the way that I do, you will enjoy these wonderful photographs of her career. There were so many shots that I had never seen before. Her life as an actor was so incredible that seeing this time capsule of wonderful images helps you understand the woman. It is wonderfully narrated. I love this book and I think the true Kate fan will also.

Book Description
Robert McElborough was a Belfast trade unionist of little education, who spent most of his life living in the Sandy Row district and working on the tramways and in the gas industry. An active organizer in two loyalist trade unions, he fought proudly "on the workers" side for wages and conditions as a descendant of an Ulster Scot.
This selection from his autobiography provides a unique record of Protestant working-class life, and a trenchant commentary on the mistreatment of workers by their masters. It also chronicles the tension between English union bosses and Ulster trade unionists, and McElborough's support for Ulster-based unions uncontaminated by either red or green influences.
The complexities of Belfast labor history are clarified in the editors' introduction and notes. Subjective, sometimes unreliable, yet authentic, McElborough's narrative is an essential source for the study of both loyalism and labor in Belfast.
