Product Description
This pocket-size dictionary is a handy reference for any English speaker studying Korean. A combination of simple definitions and practical expressions make it easy to use. Romanized entries are followed by Korean hangul spellings and the most commonly used Korean words are clearly marked, helping learners acquire vocabulary in gradual stages. Appendixes explain important grammatical and cultural features of Korean, such as idiomatic usages and the system of honorifics.
Customer Reviews:
very good for basic level.......2007-06-02
I am a student of first Korean language level and even at this point I do not use much more the dictionary, I choose this one because here in Mexico city Korean books are hard to find. When I receive it, I was surprised by the quality of the item by itself, but when I start reading it, it was really good. Words are easy to find into the Korean part and it makes very easy to go into pronunciation.
Plus it contains an appendix at the end of the book with very useful information for to understand some "why`s" of Korean language.
Definitely a very good tool for beginners.
A basic, yet not basic, dictionary........1998-08-22
Unlike most Korean/English dictionaries, this dictionary is designed for English speakers, and gives examples of "shades of meaning" for words such as "play" (a sport) vs. "play" (music). This is a valuable feature.
Although the dictionary appears to be intended for people learning Korean (rather than the casual tourist), the Korean/English half is alphabetized by Romanized equivalent. When I read an unfamiliar Korean word, I don't want to have to Romanize it in order to look it up. I am generally opposed to Romanization, since it impedes the process of learning the Korean alphabet.
In contrast to the basic vocabulary, the grammar section is fairly advanced, and uses no Romanization whatsoever. It's as if the dictionary can't make up its mind about who its audience is.
The grammar section is quite valuable for anyone who's seriously studying Korean, and it is what made the book worth the price for me. However, on the whole, the dictionary's "split personality" is what gives it a 2-star rating.

Product Description
What are the differences and similarities between U.S. and Korean Culture?
There are many books for Americans on understanding Korea or for Koreans trying to understand the U.S., but this is the first book to attempt to reach both audiences. Authors highlight in this book how average Americans and Koreans generally behave and what they expect in similar circumstances -- American ways and Korean ways.
This book was designed for anyone who interacts with Americans or Koreans and wishes to know more about the differences and similarities between American and Korean culture and society. It has been written in a simple and direct style, with emphasis on the more practical aspects of human social interactions and customs. This book not only describes what Americans and Koreans generally do, it also describes why they behave as they do. In this respect, the book could also be subtitled "Understanding Two Distinct Cultures."
Customer Reviews:
Understanding Korea, Understanding America.......2000-11-18
Any American who has ever been puzzled by Korean manners, any Korean who has ever been confused by American behavior, should buy this book. As a longtime student and sometime resident of Korea, I especially appreciate the comprehensive treatment of every aspect of daily life, from birth to death, job search to friendship. These concrete matters, which take up the bulk of the book, are prefaced by an opening chapter exploring the foundations of Korean and American culture. Contrasting but not comparing the Judeo-Christian tradition with Confucianism sets the stage for understanding why Americans send written invitations in advance of important events like weddings while Koreans tend to invite guests orally much closer to the date. The authors provide practical guidance for newcomers to either country, visitors, and the increasing numbers of people ties to both countries by marriages or business agreements. The book is well organized, well written and an excellent guide to both cultures.
Entertaining and Educational book about 2 cultures.......2000-08-14
This book was amazing!! It accurately gave the reader a view of 2 distinct cultures in the East and West. It is well-organized, well-written, and easy to read. It is by far the best book about culture there is and a must-have for Americans living in Korea and vice-versa. But above all, it will help you understand the people. It will definitely make your life a whole lot easier!!!

Customer Reviews:
Nice pictures, no good for planning.......2007-07-17
The photos in this book are nice and there are a few good maps and travel tips, but I found it lacking in useful information for planning my trip. I'm used to travel books having information on several attractions, how to get to them, how much they cost, what the hours are, etc.
This book is more of a storyteller than a planner.
good ideas, good background.......2006-08-19
I have recently returned from spending a couple of weeks in Japan and used this book beforehand to plan, and then during my trip as a guide. Its smaller size, interesting facts and history, vivid pictures, and nicely planned walks, make it a good travel book and an excellent pairing with a larger, but drier, tome such as Rough Guide or Lonely Planet.
Fodor's Exploring Japan, 5th Edition.......2005-09-03
I am planning a trip to Japan in 2007 with an adult granddaughter and two of her friends, the book is informative and gives suggestions about Hotels and other lodging. I'm still finding things of interest and info every time I pick up the book.

Book Description
Inside one of America's most remarkable success stories, from the bestselling author of Jack Welch and the G.E. Way.
Two of the toughest challenges for any company are leadership transitions and rapid growth. How do you replace an enormously popular and beloved CEO-especially one who started from scratch to create a national icon? And how do you maintain a rapid growth rate without losing the culture and focus of a small company?
Over the past ten years, since the death of the legendary Sam Walton, Wal-Mart has passed both challenges with flying colors. In 1992, it had revenues of $43.9 billion; now it's number one on the Fortune 500 list of America's largest companies, with revenues of $218 billion. Sam Walton's successors have taken the company into far-flung new markets and new directions yet without losing the down-to-earth retailing culture that made Wal-Mart thrive in its early years, when its business model was truly revolutionary.
Robert Slater, a highly respected business journalist and author, was granted unprecedented access to the company while writing The Wal-Mart Decade. He takes readers deep into the inner circle, where the big decisions are made about strategy and operations. And he weaves a fascinating, accessible story about the many challenges of the past decade and how Wal-Mart built on its founder's legacy to overcome them.
Customer Reviews:
Watch CNBC piece on Wal-Mart instead.......2006-12-22
Sam Walton's autobiography is a much more interesting book and story of Wal-Mart albeit dated. This book gives you an update on the last ten years. The David LeFabor (sp?) CNBC piece run on the cable network over the holidays for the past year or so is more interesting and time better spent. The book gives you little insight into Lee Scott.
Average but the only book that does a real business analysis.......2006-12-22
For those who enjoyed made in America this is the book that will take your through Wal-Marts current years. There is a brief synopsis of their past but it mostly focuses on the 1990's and the tremendous backlash against Wal-Mart that resulted from that decade. The book is well written but could have had more information. If you are looking for more on Wal-Mart though this is the best place to get it and Robert Slater has put out several books on the company and he does first rate analysis. If you are looking for a book that blames Wal-Mart for the sins of the country you won't find it here. This is simply business analysis.
Quick Read Intro to Wal-Mart as a Business.......2006-11-27
This book is good as a quick look at Wal-Mart for those that are interested in Wal-Mart from the standpoint of business success. And given the company's business success, this is a worthy topic.
This book is written from a BUSINESS not a SOCIAL perspective, and succeeds on that level.
Not overly critical or insightful, but very good as an introduction to the Wal-Mart business perspective.
A perceptive view.......2004-11-16
I had the privilege of meeting the author personally at his home in East Jerusalem -- he gave me a copy of this book as a parting gift, and I read it on a 11 hour flght to North America from Tel Aviv. Of course, one views a book differently after a five hour in depth conversation with the writer, but understanding the writer's values and approach helps explain things. Mr. Slater openly trades 'critical journalism' for access -- he is not out to do a hatchet job on his subjects; they know this, and thus allow him a closer peek at the inner workings of the business. With this understanding in mind, if you are looking to validate the 'problems' of Wal Mart (of which there are many) you are likely to be disappointed; if you wish to see the world from the perspective of the Wal Mart executive team -- and then supplement it with more critical books -- you will significantly increase your understanding of this massive business, and its successful transfer to the professional executive management (with continuing family ownership interest).
This book is available for sale at Wal-Mart, nuff said.......2004-10-24
This was an incredibly sophomoric book and a tremendous disappoinment. Although it gives a sanitized overview of Wal-Mart and its development, I personally believe the book worth reading about Wal-Mart, one which is balanced and looks at the pros and cons of an American triumph of commerce while giving an honest account of some of the techniques that made it possible, has yet to be written. All seem to come from the extreme left or right with an agenda to promote. As someone who lives and works in Bentonville and makes a living from doing business primarily with suppliers who answer to Wal-Mart, I am in a unique position to study the beast as well as my clients up close. I think what irritates people the most is that Wal-Mart has been very successful in presenting a persona as an "aw-shucks" company while behaving behind the scenes much like any other major corporation of its size and ilk. I laugh at the people who can't realize that Wal-Mart is appealing to the cycle of consumer evolution (when was the last time you saw a milkman delivering door to door? The business model simply doesn't work anymore)and don't realize that the greatest revenge against Wal-Mart isn't to prevent them from building a store, but simply not to use it after they have gone to the expense of building and stocking it.
Wal-Mart dosn't put small businesses out, rather most small business owners don't understand it's their responsibility to stay ahead of market forces and consumer trends if they intend to offer a viable service and commodity in the marketplace.

Customer Reviews:
A mediocre horse collectible book.......1998-11-27
This is a very poorly researched book consisting mainly of photos with captions like 'brass horse $3'. The first section on Breyers, Hartlands, Hagen Renakers and North Lights has some nice pictures. If you can't get a copy of the HR Handbook, this book has pictures of some neat horses, and there is no North Light reference book available. There is some info on older famous horses like Trigger, Fury, and Silver. Recomended only for the pictures in the first section.

Book Description
Patriotism was rarely more fervently displayed in America than in the early nineteenth century. Enthusiasm for the new country was especially felt in England where goods were produced specifically to commemorate America. This book presents in detail the transfer-printed ceramic dishes made in Staffordshire for the American market from 1820-1860. Here are the patriots, historical events and breathtaking new landscape views captured by fine artists and transferred to ceramics by the best companies in England. Today these dishes are actively collected. Written with a close view of the cultural changes that contributed to the enormous popularity of historical Staffordshire wares, Jeffrey Snyder has documented the scenes and the thinking of the people who so enjoyed displaying American history on their dishes. The makers, their marks, and information about the scenes is woven into this book to identify each of the examples in 485 color illustrations.

Book Description
"Mitchum's tales include beatings, hanging producers by their shoelaces, killings in Mexican bars and slapping Teutonic helmer Otto Preminger. And there are classic observations, such as his quip to Variety that 'the best producer is an absent one.' Mitchum editor Jerry Roberts...conducted one of the interviews, and has done a terrific job piecing together vintage conversations with David Frost, Dick Lochte, Richard Schickel and Charles Champlin, as well as collecting a wonderful array of prize quotes by and about Mitchum." -Steven Gaydos, Variety
Customer Reviews:
Nice job of xeroxing some old articles.......2001-07-17
This book about a major movie star was put together with a minimum of effort. If it took more than two days to xerox or get a transcript of these old interviews I would be surprised. The book is short and padded at the end with random quotes by or about Mitchum. You can digest this book in about thirty minutes. Mitchum is amusing as an interview subject but the interviews are mostly question and answer and have no context and the questioners often don't know much about Mitchum's career or at least don't know when he's got his facts right or wrong. Most of the interviews were done during publicity jaunts so you get a superficial, one-sided view of the actor's experiences. If that's all you want to know about Mitchum and his movies okay but otherwise this is a waste of money.
PJ Peake's Personal opinion.......2001-07-14
Having read another book written by Mitch's brother John(which I might add was VERY good) this is next to that. This was previously taped interviews and various stories told by Mitch himself. His wife, son Chris and Rodger Ebert also were involved. It is a real must for any Mitchum fan!! For those who are not familiar with his style, it will be up to them to figure out what many of the hosts had to discover about the star much to their delight. This book has many parts, such as quotes, documentaries etc. Truly a delight to read with many surprises. PJ Peake
