seed dispersal.
Customer Reviews:
A fun book .......2006-03-09
My 4 year old really enjoys this whole series of Cat in the Hat books. He loves "reading" about insects, flowers, space, etc. The format of this series of books is very similar (if not exact)and are easy to follow and keeps a busy boy captivated. The rhyming, illustrations (& antics) keep my son interested and learning in the process.
It's Not Quite Seuss, But It's Not Bad.......2003-06-07
Joining the ranks of characters who live on long after their creators has passed away, it's The Cat in the Hat!
Here, you get to see the cat, Thing 1 and Thing 2, and the two kids as they explore the basics of flowering plants. The prose is at an appropriate level for kids who like the longer Dr. Seuss books. The illustrations (by Aristides Ruiz) are so close to the original that I couldn't tell the difference.
The only minor quibble is that the words don't flow QUITE as well as Theodore Geisel's words. Then again, few writer's words do. Also, Ms. Worth is faced with trying to teach a subject and entertain at the same time. At that task, she succeeds admirably.
Highly recommended.

Wonderful Book.......2007-07-19
This is a quick overview of different types of seeds, what they look like, etc. It doesn'treally tell a story such as Anna did this and learned that. It's more of someone just telling you about it,as if you'd asked and this is your answer. It's full of simple experiments that will keep my little one's busy for several weeks. What's really awesome about this is that it fits right in with Oak Meadow's Kindergarten winter science, which is all about seeds. Winter isn't really that directed so I can't wait to use this when writing up my schedule for the little guy this winter. The experiments and activities included are:
Make a Seed Collection
Can You Find the Baby Plant?
Seeds Need Water
Seeds Need Warmth
Plants Need Soil
Plants Need Sunlight
Can Roots Grow Up? Can Stems Grow Down?
Make Some Granola
What a wonderful way to spend this winter and give James a greater understanding of how the garden works.

Customer Reviews:
Only the Title is Clever.......2006-10-15
Tim Cahill is a jerk. This guy has seen and done some incredible things, things that people could only dream of doing. You'd think he'd value the life he's been lucky to lead, but it seems like he doesn't understand just how lucky he is. Of course, I am jealous that people give him these opportunities to do and see incredible things, but the main point is that he's a jerk. Maybe he's been doing incredible things for so long that he doesn't appreciate what he does, and if that's the case he shouldn't do it anymore. I get this impression of him from the sundry of lame anecdotes he shares with us in this book. You can tell he's just standing over the editor ensuring that they make him look "boxing clever," but basically, he's a pretty lame guy. He's trying WAY too hard. I would appreciate the stories more if he appreciated what he did for a living. This book makes him look flippant, smug, and conceited. Remember, the things he did are incredible, not the man himself.
brain candy.......2004-04-27
Each story is interesting and some of them are quite funny...buy it used...wouldn't pay full price for it!
Pecked to death by ducks.......2001-05-29
I was quite disappointed in this book. Cahill has written outstanding material but this collection seems to be a gathering of miscellaneous leftovers. I was led to this book after reading A Walk in the Woods by Bryson - and it was a false lead. The quality is not there.
Fascinating Journeys.......2001-01-05
I was recommended to read Tim Cahill's books as a huge fan of Bill Bryson. While both writers discuss their adventures in traveling, their styles are very different. Bryson's books tend to be coherent pieces about one specific trip or expedition (Australia, the Appalachian trail), while Pecked to Death is a collection of short works written by Cahill, sometimes for other magazines. I find Bryson funnier; however Cahill's writing seems to be more evocative of the natural wonders he is writing about.
This distinction mentioned; Pecked to Death by Ducks is a very worthwhile read. Cahill has traveled to some of the most amazing places in the world, with some of the most interesting companions, and these adventures are marvelously rendered in this book. In addition, since each chapter stands alone, it's quite easy to stop and start again. Definately recommended for anyone with an interest in adventure or eco-travel!
Great stocking stuffer for real or armchair outdoorsmen.......2000-12-01
You don't have to be a travel and outdoors enthusiast to enjoy this book; consisting of Truth McNuggets ranging in length from a few pages to a few tens of pages, it's as appropriate in the bathroom or next to the bedlamp as in a hard-used backpack or on the shotgun side of the car. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and now and then you'll probably wonder why on earth anybody would want to do such a thing -- but you'll be glad that he did and wrote about it.

Book Description
This is the book for anyone who has ever looked at a horse and wondered: "What is he thinking?" "Why did he do that?" or, more often, "Why won't he do that?"
Here you will find a fascinating study of the behavior and psychology of the horse combined with clear explanations of the basic concepts of balance, of both horse and rider. The book will enable you to understand the mind of the horse and what makes him tick. You will learn to understand what he is trying to tell you, and how to communicate with him. IN HARMONY WITH YOUR HORSE shows you how to develop a better relationship with your horse and become the best of friends.
Clare Albinson offers unique insight into why horses behave in certain ways. She shows us how we can solve problems, improve behavior and performance, and create--both mentally and physically--a harmonious partnership between horse and rider.

Book Description
The Ben Ezra Synagogue, in Cairo, is best known as the synogogue in which the 'Cairo Geniza' was found--an astonishingly rich store of ancient books, manuscripts, correspondences, and records dating back to the tenth century. Copiously illustrated with plans, engravings, and photographs, Fortifications and the Synagogue describes the recent restoration of this ancient synagogue, as well as the historical and archaeological research essential to its preservation and to an understanding of the religious communities that founded modern Cairo. The work is unprecedented in its comprehensive examination of the subject, presenting the first measured survey and photographic study of the fortress and synagogue, the first thorough study of the Geniza manuscripts, and a complete history of the synagogue from the Geniza period to the present.

Book Description
This is the first biography of the last surviving member of Hollywood's illustrious Rat Pack, Joey Bishop.
Customer Reviews:
Oh, so that's what happened to Joey Bishop.......2005-03-25
Mr. Starr should be complemented for taking the time to write a book about a comedian that has been long forgotten. I would have preferred a longer book but perhaps Mr. Starr was afraid of being redundant. One reason that the book is not longer, I assume, is that Joey's career does not really lend itself to a study of a body of work.
Joey--when he was at his best--had the ability to snap a very witty one-liner. However, while not stated in Mr. Starr's book--I believe that Joey's real downfall was the laziness he exhibited on his late-night talk show. He never really took the time to do a monologue or prepare any post-monologue comedy bit. Instead, he let Regis share the opening spot with him and then he went right to his guests. That would never sell today and it didn't sell in the sixties.
Mr. Starr takes the time to indicate how Joey was unbearable to much of his staff, somewhat reminiscent of various accounts of how Eddie Cantor treated his radio staff. But Joey and Eddie do share one extremely admirable trait--a dedication to charitable causes (as set forth by Mr. Starr) and for that alone, Joey deserves our respect.
Incidentally, Mr. Starr's recounting of one Joey Bishop joke about the Texan who goes to Israel is one that I'll be telling people for a while.
Readable book about a marginal entertainer.......2003-07-12
Ask anyone under 45 about Joey Bishop, and the response you'll get will be "Who?" Michael Seth Starr aims to change that, although you'll be wondering by the end of the book why he bothers. Bishop was, at best, a marginal figure in the annals of American entertainment. During the 60's, he somehow managed to share the stage with superstars like Frank, Dean and Sammy despite having none of their charisma. And although Starr often describes him as the "top comedian of the 1960's," he also has to admit that Johnny Carson thrashed him in the late-night ratings, and Bishop's early 1960's sitcom was an utter flop.
Still, the book is readable. Bishop comes off as a hard-working, but demanding comic, with few friends. I hope he truly got good audience response in the 60's, because the lines quoted in this book fall flat on the printed page. I guess you had to be there. Starr is a good writer....perhaps he will choose a more intriguing subject for his next bio.
The long awaited Joey Bishop biography........2003-06-18
If your a big fan of Joey Bishop you will devour this book. Michael Seth Starr does an outstanding job chronicling the life and career of this legendary entertainer. You will join Joey as he climbs the show biz ladder from small clubs in Philadelphia, to the Copacabana and the Sands, to movie sets, tv studios, and to Broadway. Frank Sinatra dubed him as the "hub of the wheel" performing with the Rat Pack. You will not be able to put this book down. "Mouse in the Rat Pack:The Joey Bishop Story" is a great read and a must have for his fans.

Book Description
One day, years after he's moved away from his childhood home in rural Ireland, Dermot Healy returns to care for his ailing mother. Out of the blue she hands him the forgotten diary he had kept as a fifteen-year-old. He is amazed to find the makings of the writer he has become, as well as taken aback at the changes his memory has wrought upon the events of the past. Here is the seed of his story-the vision of the boy meets the memory of the man-which creates a stunning, illusory effect. The strange silhouettes who have haunted his past come back to inhabit these pages: his father, a kind policeman who guides him back to bed when he stumbles down the stairs sleepwalking; his mother, whose stories young Dermot has heard so often that he believes they are his own; or Aunt Masie, whose early disappointment in love has left her both dreamy and cynical. In this billowing and expansive series of recollections, Healy has traced the very shape of human memory.
Customer Reviews:
Memory through the looking glass.......2000-04-06
In this bittersweet memoir about growing up and growing old, Dermot Healy explores the quality of memory, of tales told and heard and told again, of times half-remembered. Highly stylistic prose reflects the stream of human consciousness, where sometimes a leaf floats past and we think we recognize it as a leaf that floated past a year before. Dermot Healy's "Bend for Home" is part "Portrait of the Artist" and part "Angela's Ashes," combining the ambient grey of Irish poverty with characteristic Irish humor.
Healy has been criticized for betraying his mother's memory in the book's sometimes hilarious, sometimes wrenching last chapter. But it is one of the most touching accounts of a son and mother's last days together since I read Mark Spragg's "Where Rivers Change Direction." What would make his mother proud is knowing that Healy has become one of the first rank of Irish authors, and his account of her decline is a sad, beautiful piece of work.
Healy should be more widely read in America, if only because his is an original voice in a new key, Irish accent or not.
An English memoir ?.......1999-08-04
The cover picture is not Irish but is a photograph of the small town in ENGLAND where I grew up !
Refeshing!!!.......1998-09-14
Dermot Healy doesn't write like Frank McCourt or anyone else, he writes his memior like Dermot Healy. Accept that and you are off to a good start to be able to appreciate his memior. What I found refershing about his way of writing was he did it more to a way that people do tend to recall their lives. It isn't always in direct synchronization, neat, tidy, perfect. We wander, there are impressions we gather because we don't always recall exact verbatum of conversations - here is where writers must embellish a bit creatively.Try to recall your own life to date, try to think of writing it. This isn't so scattered you can't make out what he is talking about but it is written in a style where we are guided to meander with him through his memories, thoughts, impressions.I think we tend to recall our lives by a more personal set of perceptions rather than _always_ an objective,clear-cut unbiased point of view. He doesn't make excuses or seem to be trying to draw pity, he reveals himself to be ultimately human, we self-inflict our own pain most of the time, we set our selves up for a good kick in the teeth. Our lives aren't always so neat and edited.
The one thing I did notice missing from his memior (which initiates at childhood, flashes into youthful adult and weaves back into adolesence and then again forward to his mother being into her 80's and I would suppose him in to his 40's)is what happened during his 30's, and later a marriage. We are only briefed that he has had a daughter to whom a woman he didn't marry - there is no story of that relationship nor of his later marriage which also he quickly mentions. It leads me to feel these were not details he felt ready to share - understandingly likely because these people are still living and out of respect for privacy of their lives - none the less it would have done no harm to bare out a little more understanding, however basic which could have been done respectfully. I noticed the same with Frank McCourt's book- Angela's Ashes - he neither went into more of his life leading up to marriage or after it. The Bend for Home is a really well written book, just know it is _not_ written in the run of the mill manner in which we are used to finding on bookshelves for sale, he writes in an unappologetic fashion which displays his unique creativity as a writer.Great job, Dermot!!!
Don't read Angela's Ashes first........1998-08-25
After reading Angela's Ashes and Dublin Girl, I craved more gritty Irish memoirs. Unfortunately this seemed disjointed and self-indulgent to me. Many of the author's trials seemed self-inflicted, in contrast to the poverty and family tribulations exposed by the other writers.
Enchanting and poignant.......1998-02-02
I picked up a copy of this book while visiting Ireland last summer and was not disappointed. The writing is stunningly vivid and poetic. Best of all, Healy ensures that the reader never quite knows what is real and what isn't.
