I spent 4 months driving from west Oz to northern New South Wales, and the coastline was pretty well covered. But not so much that you can't find your own spots not listed. A great guide for the first time visitor.

I gave this to my boyfriend for Christmas since he and I are involved in the industry. Unless you are planning to really get involved in the industry, we wouldn't recommend this book. It is primarily about politics with the BATF and how the big guys (Gallo) shut the little guys out of the market.

If in the Wine Industry - Read this book.......2001-10-27

As the title indicates, if you are in the wine industry (at any point along the supply chain) or if you are considering entering the industry, read this book. If you are interested in learning how to taste wine, that is not the intent of this book. Lewis writes this book as an insider on the industry and from a consultant's perspective.

This book is a must read for anyone considering entering the wine business! Much of what Lewis writes could help fill out the majority of your business plan - from determining cash flows to gaining insight into the wine industry in general. Or at the least, you could use the book as a check on some of your assumptions.

If however, you simply want to learn how to taste & enjoy wine, you would do well to look for another book. His focus is purely from a business perspective.

informative & quick read.......2000-09-19

I picked this book up by chance in a Calistoga bookstore. After reading the book "napa" I've become very interested in the behind the scenes goings on in the wine industry. I found Purdue's book informative and enlightening. OK maybe I'd rather not know some of the stuff but I had already had my "shock" by reading Napa. I still love a weekend in wine country and the beauty and sereness of the place. Visiting the wineries and talking with the people will always be a fun thing to do. My enthusiasm for it has not dwindled, I am simply a more informed "wine enthusiast" and will never be a "wine snob". Reading this book has made me so much more comfortable with choosing the wines I like for according to what tastes good to me and not because of price or reviews.

He KNOWS what he is writing about. Pay attention. This is, perhaps, the best book available for gaining an inside look at the wine industry, learning about wine, and how to start a wine cellar that you find in one concise volume. (There is much more, too; these are just a few of the topics he covers.)

There seems to be a mystique surrounding wine in this country. Perdue says, "the greatest barrier to increased wine consumption is wine's snobby image." And the wine industry seems to want to bolster this image. No wonder we Americans have developed a deep-seated prejudice about wine. You're supposed to have red wine with meat and white wine for fish and then there are dessert wines and apéritifs, etc., etc. He tells us to forget the rules; find the kinds of wine you like and enjoy them with what you like. It makes sense.

Want to know a secret? Read the chapter on counterfeit wines. Find out how genuine Champagne is made, the similarity of sparkling wines, and the great switheroo that fooled most of the world (except the French) . And if you want to find something "they" don't want you to know, read about to store and serve wine because the plastic membrane inside the box collapses as wine is dispensed, thus preventing the introduction of air which can oxidize and spoil the wine.

"While the wine box seems like the perfect container . . . in reality most of the boxes you see are adulterated with substantial quantities of added alcohol, water, citric acid, fruit juices, and other flavors and chemicals. . . [U]nder a strict interpretation of [Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms] rules, a box of the sort could contain as little as 38 percent wine." And you (and I) thought we were getting the real stuff!

The most useful information, for me, was finding out about the glut of wine on the market that resulted from the unusually productive grape harvest in 1997. This over supply has led to some fantastic bargains in wine that should last through the next two to three years! There are many remarkable wines available now for under $10 a bottle.

The fun part of the book tells how to go about deciding upon which wines you want to stock; have some friends over, each bringing a bottle to try, and make notes on which ones you like or dislike. Then go out and stock up on the ones you like.

I found this book to be very engrossing from the very first page! The author pulls no punches in stating his opinion and exposing the 'dirty little secrets' of some of the largest wime producers in California...a must read for anyone who enjoys wine or is interested in the wine business!

Eisner's gone now,so anything to remember and see the mind of a master. Working at his craft and showing how its done is more than worth it. My only regret is I never meet the man,and I didn't buy this till after he past.

Bland For All Seasons.......2006-11-19

"Paul Scofield: An Actor for All Seasons" would seem to be an excellent argument that just because someone has had a successful career doesn't make them a prime candidate for a biography. For despite Scofield's acting triumphs in such roles as Thomas More, Solieri, King Lear, Hamlet, and John Gabriel Borkman, he is depicted in Garry O'Connor's relatively slim volume as a quiet, modest and rather shy man.

This is not in any way meant as a criticism of Scofield, and indeed it is refreshing to encounter such an unassuming personality compared with such personally unpleasant Shakespearean Titans as Laurence Olivier or Donald Wolfit. But that is the major problem with the book: with such a demure central figure as Scofield, the narrative is primarily a bland chronology of the actor's various stage roles.

Had O'Connor anything profoundly interesting to say about Scofield as an actor, the verdict might have been different, but he primarily offers up tired hyperbole of the actor's "greatness" without ever really putting his finger on what set Scofield apart from his contemporaries. Even his chronology is inaccurate, writing, for instance, that Scofield filmed his role in "The Train" from summer into Autumn of 1966 (after he had appeared in the Oscar winning film of "A Man for All Seasons"), whereas "The Train" was actually released in Europe in the autumn of 1964 (more than two years before "A Man for All Seasons").

If this sounds like harsh criticism of O'Connor's book, it isn't meant to be. Scofield is simply a quiet, dignified man whose life doesn't lend itself to the kind of larger-than-life biography of an Olivier or a John Gielgud. This is likely to be as good a biography as we'll ever see of Scofield, a fine actor and a good man whose life isn't really all that interesting when recounted in print.

A Black Eye for Wall Street.......2004-11-10

I found it difficult to put this book down, and I would have given it 5 stars if the ending wasn't so weak. The end left me hanging and was a little confusing with all of the names and trials.

That said, I heard of some of the cast of characters in this book. I even worked for the same firm as one of them, and he was an arrogant guy who thinks his you know what doesn't stink.

Some of the stories in here were bizzare and almost all were well documented. Men and women should read this book to learn about Wall Street's dirty little secret. However, I am not convinced that this is a problem unique to Wall Street. I am positive that discrimination is in all industries, and it is not limited to sexual harrassment.

Packed With Knowledge!.......2004-06-16

Susan Antilla presents a powerful and startling indictment of the sexist behavior of stock brokers working for Wall Street and its offshoots, specifically Smith Barney's Shearson/American Express office in Garden City, Long Island. Women struggled to be hired, and then found that the men in charge of their careers practiced all sorts of sexual harassment and intimidation, from jokes to displays of sexual prowess, physical contact and threats of rape. As she describes, the bosses sought to bar women or trap them in low positions. While painting the broader picture, Antilla focuses on whistle blower, Pam Martens, who revealed the situation when she sued for damages. This skillfully written book reads like a fascinating novel, so graphic and dramatic that it is more like a screenplay than a report. We believe it will draw intense interest from everyone affected by this issue: female executives who face glass ceilings and harassment, male executives who must determine their own philosophies toward their female colleagues and human resource professionals who are charged with watching out for them both.

Kind of Relieving but sad.......2004-01-17

I read this book as I'm very familiar with the Brokerage Industry. I must say, while some of this is appalling, and people should never be treated poorly, it's relieving to know that there is a place where men are (were) still men. Men call each other disparaging remarks, call each other names, basically joke around and take it one step further. Unfortunately, women always want in, and it ends up ruining it for everyone. Any fun or solace we had is gone. It's a shame too, because those same women could have fun too and be "One of the guys" though fear of their lawsuits has now caused even the last bastion of men to fall. Why couldn't you just stick with Dr. Phil and leave us alone. Where can we hide from women and still be ourselves? Is there no place to go?? Even better, why can't those women just join us, rather than fight us! It would seem the last place men can work and have fun, and at the same time have women having fun with them is the Man Show, or the Howard Stern show. I'm sorry that sounds so sad, but it's our truth. Time's have changed, and while our son's will never know it, it's our own fault for caving to their whims, little by little by little. It's a women's world!

Very accurate.......2003-11-09

I was a successful broker for many years in one of Smith Barney's largest offices in the nation, and I can personally attest that the events depicted in this book, while shocking, are not exaggerations.

I would have appreciated if Antilla had consulted with some Constitutional law experts. She should have noted that the U.S. Supreme Court upheld mandatory arbitration shortly after Judge Motley upheld it in this particular lawsuit.

Antilla captures the culture of Shearson Lehman Bros. and Smith Barney with uncanny accuracy. Any investor -- male or female -- should read this book to understand some of the ways that the Wall Street good old boys network circles the wagons to protect their own.

A Case with a Twist.......2003-03-17

I'm a principal at an investment-banking firm although not a stockbroker so reading this book was a good exercise in reviewing the risks at our firm. The coverage in this book is exceptional. As discussed, investment-banking firms are ripe with potential for sexual discrimination. Partly because so many areas work on trading floors which breed a fraternity type atmosphere, partly because stock brokers tend to be fraternity/salesmen type guys, and partly because this environment has assistants, many who are women, working in close contact with these who sometimes consider themselves "masters of the universe." Confidence/cockiness is never in short supply at an investment banking firm's trading floor.

The first part of the book lays out the environment where sexual discrimination was prevalent. It's so clearly offensive that it's amazing there wasn't a larger settlement in this case. But this is where the book greatly details the unique twist in the case. The protagonist goes through two lawyers and watches as her lawyer and the opposing lawyer seem to become more in agreement than her and her lawyer. Eventually she's dropped from the settlement even though her name still appears on the class action suit. So while I thought I was a reading a sexual discrimination, the book turned into attorney/client relationships and attorney greed in class action cases.

Do I think the attorneys became more concerned about their large fee than their client? Yes. Do I think the original client could be difficult to deal with? Yes. But the outcome is tragic and no one got what he or she deserved. Justice was not monetarily served for the defendants in my opinion. I strongly recommend this book if you have interest in investment banking, law or women's issues.
