I stopped buying from Amazon after my last nightmare a year ago. Then I forgot and was stupid enough to order these books from you. It took 10 days to get my hands on a travel book. After all the hassels I went through it would be cheaper to buy the book locally or have them order it than deal wth Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars My wife and I kept this with us at all times...........2001-09-05

This was my third interaction with Lonely Planet books and I am impressed. The information and maps are more than fairly accurate (there is not much you can do about the winding narrow passages in the old towns).

During our stay, we not only carried this with us to get better background information on all the sites we saw, but we also would spend part of the evenings reviewing the history and planning our next day's excursions. I concur with the other review about men wearing shorts. It didn't seem to be a problem for myself or my wife in many of the major cities (like Fes, Marrakech, and Rabat).

I would recommend this guide before (to plan what you want to see), during (to understand what you are seeing), and after (to help you determine what exactly you photographed) your trip.

4 out of 5 stars Engaging and informative.......2000-11-14

Just returned from a 17 day trek to Morocco, and this LP guide never left our bodies. Prices, especially for hotels, were remarkably in line with the guidebook - a real shock, considering it's now two years old. Still, the quality of a couple of highly-touted good deal-rooms have deteriorated. An updated volume would be great; hope it's forthcoming. (Also Ñ and this might be streching it - while the book makes cursory mention of Morocco's huge unemployment rate and poverty ills, LP Morocco hardly paints the picture of the grim reality of life in some towns and cities. One can't expect a travel guidebook to completely prep you for those types of social problems, but I thought the authors glossed over those facts.) Other than these complaints, though, LP's Morocco is an essential, and much more informative, read than the Rough Guide Morocco. And compared to other LP guides, its Morocco edition is a cut above.

5 out of 5 stars Superb, simultaneously comprehensive and concise.......1999-08-10

I just returned from a wonderful stay in Morocco, and this book was most useful. One minor quibble - re the book's advice against men wearing shorts - it's quite acceptable now

3 out of 5 stars The guide is OK.......1999-06-29

Once more, Lonely Planet has managed to write a complete guide to the budget traveller. I've recently been to Morocco and this guide was very useful. But I think it should be more explicit when writing about how to avoid being robbed, harassed and how to drive among those crazy Moroccans.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the first, second, third.....time visitor.......1998-08-27

I am preparing to depart on my third trip to Morocco. This book is THE BEST travel guide for Morocco. It gives the first time traveler and the veteran good insight on where to go, what to see, and the all important how to act and how not to get taken advantage of.. My husband, a Moroccan native won't travel around his country without it.

Teachers searching for authentic literature about Native Americans will find this the perfect book for several reasons. First, it is not a set-in-the-past story. Rather, it opens in a modern day home, with a contemporary Native child and her grandfather. Second, it is written by a Native American woman, and her insider experience makes the text ring with the authentic speech patterns of the Kiowa people. Third, Stroud is an award winning artist whose work is known world wide. Her illustrations for the book are stunning. Finally, the story is about two different tribes: the Kiowa and the Comanche. By naming these two groups in the book, Stroud's story can help children understand the diversity that exists in Native American culture. There are presently over 500 tribal entities in the United States; Kiowa and Comanche are only two. It is truly wonderful to have this book in today's classrooms. It helps to counter the idea that Native Americans are extinct and that there is a monolithic tribe.

I was a friend of Randy from meeting him in 1991 til his death. He was one of the most persistent men I ever knew. Born in Oklahoma of mixed descent, Anglo and Native American, he attended the Naval Academy and served for many years. He became an accomplished artist and illustrator. He spent many years preparing his monumental work. Just when it was finished and ready to submit, he went to town on an errand, upon returning, he discovered his entire collection gone--the studio had burned to the ground. And he had to begin all over again. It is a testimony that he finished it and sent it in. Even though Volume Four was published post-humously. Not every man gets to fulfil his life's ambition as Randy did. Every illustration in this multi-volume work has been drawn by him from original materiel. Where relevent the complete text of regulations is quoted. For example, in the period which I research, that from the 1880s to today, the volume three, reprints the complete uniform regulations in the teens, not just the portion on mounted men. Thus, the work is useful also for those interested in the military up to 1943. One must elucidate on the title a bit. As stated, it is not just on the mounted horse cavalry so celebrated in John Wayne movies, but covers all the mounted troops, dragoons, mounted rifles, and cavalry in the period of the frontier expansion, before the Civil War, then both North and South, and the post war frontier patrolling days. Not only is the equipment, both individual and horse, of the cavalryman covered, so is that of the artillery man where it differed. The coverage is relevent to all mounted men--engineers, signalers, and hospital corpsmen, and their clothing and equipment.

The Seven Visions of Bull Lodge is one of a very limited literary source or documentation of the Gros Ventre (Grow-Von) American Indain Tribe of Northern Montana. Known to themselves as the White Clay People, Bull Lodge was a powerful spiritual healer and warrior, being one of the last fully authorized Keepers of the White Clay People's sacred Feathered Pipe. The information comes from the Depression Era (1930) as told by Bull Lodge's daughter, Garter Snake. Fred Gone translates the story of her father's spiritual and leadership journey. George Horse Capture, Sr. ed. the text to introduce the reader to the issues and worldviews of the White Clay People.

Anyone interested in authentic tradtional culture and an understanding of the sacred lands of Montana will find the book of interest. Anyone seeking to learn more about the Great Plains Cultures will find this book insightfull.

                        Book Description

Situated on the shores of the Argolic Gulf, only a few miles away from the much later prehistoric sites of Mycenae, Tiryns and Midea, Lerna is one of the key building blocks in our understanding of Greek archaeology. The first evidence from the site is Neolithic, and the latest settlement evidence is Mycenaean. However the most important material from the site comes from the middle of the 3rd Millennium BC when a remarkable large, rectangular building known as 'The House of the Tiles' was built. Possibly never finished, with unpainted walls and doors that lead nowhere, the purpose and meaning of this building has provoked vigorous debate. Was it the house of a chief and the precursor of the later Mycenaean palaces? Or was it a communal storage facility, designed to store the elaborately sealed chests and jars found inside? No less mysterious than its use is its destruction: After a violent fire, a huge mound was built on top of the charred foundations, the area avoided by later house builders. This guide is illustrated with many plans and black and white photos.

                            Book Description

New Directions in Biblical Theology contains the papers of an international conference on Biblical Theology which was organized by the Faculty of Theology of Aarhus University on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. The papers delivered at the conference address a number of fundamental issues evolving from the recently revived debate on Biblical Theology. The first group of contributions deals with essential topics such as the biblical concept of revelation, and the interpretation of the Old Testament as presented by the apostle Paul, by the evangelists Matthew, Mark and John, and by the Letter to the Hebrews. Further contributions treat themes such as the `re-use' of a given biblical tradition, theology of creation, apocalyptic, the concept of mercy, the community's role in transmission and interpretation, and the primary aspects of the concept of God.

Since his death in 1969, Boris Karloff remains one of Hollywood's most famous figures. He is still revered for his talent, his many qualities that earned him admiration and respect, and, of course, his landmark role as the Monster in the 1931 movie classic Frankenstein. This biography, the result of many years of interviews and extensive research, examines Karloff the person, as well as the actor. His work (which lasted more than half a century) in films, radio, television, and the theater is covered in detail, highlighted with accounts by many who knew him and worked with him. Among the contributors are Robert Anderson, Peter Bogdanovich, Ray Bradbury, Julie Harris, Tony Randall, Ronald Reagan, Eli Wallach, and Jonathan Winters. With the support of the Karloff family, Gordon Shriver pays tribute to this much-loved performer who will never be forgotten.

A beautifully written biography, the author explores with much affection the actor whose personal life was juxtaposed to "the monster" he is best known for portraying. A must-read for horror/terror fans as well as theatre/movie buffs.

                            5 out of 5 stars A Man to Remember.......2006-09-19

This is a detailed review of the life of Boris Karloff by an author who performed a vast amount of research and who has a true fondness for the person he was writing about. The picture of Karloff presented in this book changed my perception of the man greatly. Very well done. I recommend it highly to anyone who is only vagurely familiar with Mr. Karloff and his work.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Karloff Fans.......2006-08-10

The other day I was fairly well sure I was going to be having a bad day. I had an afternoon appointment to see a medical specialist for an exam; I was on pins and needles with anxiety. (Turns out I'm fine.) But did I have a bad day? No. I had just gotten in the mail a new book that cheered me and entertained me--Gordon F. Shriver's BORIS KARLOFF: THE MAN REMEMBERED. I read it all the way through the same day I got it! The basic facts of Karloff's life won't be new to anyone who has read other bios on The King Of Horror. But Mr. Shriver has painstakingly assembled a large gathering of anecdotes and details of Boris' personal and professional life that WILL be new to fans of Karloff, and has provided as well as a few photos that won't be familiar at all to Karloff aficionados.

Any Karloff kompletist will want this next to his/her copy of Cynthia Lindsay's DEAR BORIS. (I think of them as companion volumes.) You will know Boris better. You will also get a better sense of what Evie Karloff, Boris' last wife, was like, and for that we can be grateful as well. Really--if you like classic horror films, and enjoy biography, do yourself a favor and get this book!

4 out of 5 stars A Lifetime Labor of Love.......2006-02-12

Evidently, Gordon Shriver has been a big fan of one of the greatest actors (not to mention human beings, as we discover) of the 20th Century. Apart from a few too many typos and other printer's errors, this book is an easy to read and thoroughly indexed work for your movie masters' shelves. I was alternately thrilled and awed by the sheer number of people Karloff touched - professionally and personally. Gordon Shriver managed to meet or otherwise correspond with literally dozens of them; their kind and candid obseervations and charming anecdotes bring a fresh perspective to a movie star much maligned. In light of the most recent retrospective of Boris' work, shown at the Film Forum, NYC, this loving tribute will be most welcomed by karloff fans old and new everywhere.

A surpassing interest in the first of anything is as old asAdam. Just as we are different from the first man and yet in many waysstill the same, Dean Mohamed is also different from the first of Amitav Ghosh, Arundhati Roy, Vikram Chandra, or Shashi Tharoor... You name them .

The main difference is in the use of the language and the market targeted. The similarity lies in the location and contemporary timing of subject matter - their own India!
