Lonely Planet Israel and Occupied Palestinian Territories........2007-07-04
Up to the usual great quality, Lonely Planets travel guides are generally the best reference tool for travellers. However, there is a beautiful and brilliant guide that was published about 20 months ago near Bethlehem by the Alternative Tourism Group which is currently only available on AMAZON UK for under 18#, called Palestine and Palestinians a 6star rating surpassing any travel book published thus far on the oPt and Israel where now razed villages or lost histories now exist. It will make any trip to the unholy Holy Land a more enriching and meaningful experience and highly recommended.

It looks easy to me to go around this country, even under Israel's attack with missile.

Customer Reviews:
Very biased -- you can do MUCH better.......2007-05-04
I buy a guide book to learn about the country I am visiting, preferably through a reasonably sympathetic eye. I don't want cheerleading or rose-colored glasses, but I don't expect open hostility or overt political bias. But the Lonely Planet Guide to Israel and the Palestinian Territories is full of just that. The author is overtly anti-Zionist in his tone, unnecessarily political, and to me outright offensive. I DO begrudge one's political views in a travel guide! If I want a political text (and I read voraciously about Israel, from a variety of viewpoints), I will buy one.
This is a terrible guide. You can do much better, and at the time of this writing, I would suggest the Frommer's Israel Guide, just released in October 2006. Anything would be better than this.
A Riveting Read.......2006-07-30
I have read and enjoyed a wide variety of Lonely Planet guides during my travels. But by far ISRAEL & THE PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES is my favorite. I picked it up before a planned trip to Israel and couldn't put it down. When I finished it, I couldn't wait to get the plane to check out this legendary country for myself. And then the trip was cancelled. I was devastated.
Though I cannot address the accuracy of restaurant, hotel and shopping recommendations here, I can say this book offers a fantastic selection of information about the history of the area, its peoples and peculiar challenges.
Reading how other reviewers have detected an anti-Israeli bias from authors Paul Hellander, Andrew Humphreys and Neil Tilbury surprised me. I noticed none of this when I first read this book, but opening it again I see it on every page from an inset box about Israeli rudeness to another that goes on and on about the challenges for Orthodox Jewish gays. I see no mention here about the "challenges" gays face in Islam.
Perhaps I was too captivated by the authors' accounts of things like "Jerusalum Syndrome" to notice the authors' political bent. And that's fine. I do not begrudge the authors their opinions.
In fact, though I am far from anti-Israel, generally speaking I prefer a point-of-view to bland, allegedly "objective" information.

Superficial.......2004-06-04
I am a LP fan, but after been living in Israel for almost 3 years I have to say that this guide is very superficial. It could be much better ... for example, there are restaurants that everybody know in Israel, very popular, very nice that are not mentioned in the guide. I would expect something more from LP ... sorry :(
Political opinion VS visitors guidebook.......2004-01-23
I have a number of Lonely Planet guides and this is the only one that goes out of its way to make political statements about the country. Along with that is the poorly researched information about what to see and where to stay.
Shame on Lonely Planet. They are unquestionably the best guide books around except for this one.
There are more helpful books on travel.......2003-02-06
I am sorry I bought this book. It is not a terrible book, and it came recommended, but it was disappointing. I wanted something different than the usual books, but simply put, the more widely known guide books are better and more helpful.
Customer Reviews:
I liked Let's Go better.......2004-08-17
I travelled to Israel a few years ago, bringing both the Lonely Planet guide and the Let's Go. I found Let's Go to be better on most counts, more up-to-date and with more relevant info, plus a larger selection of good places to stay and/or eat. In addition, Let's Go's recent-history section was far better. In fact, the only thing I liked better about Lonely Planet's guide was that it was printed on nicer paper.
Book Description
Logistics management is increasingly being seen as a source of competitive strength. Its effective use provides potential for cost reduction and the opportunity for increasing market share. The second edition discusses the role of logistics in achieving corporate and financial goals. Updated and expanded with more checklists, more short cases and executive summaries, this is an invaluable guide for all logistics and distribution managers.
Customer Reviews:
Boring book.......2007-06-10
Keeps repeating the same things over and over using different words. Very boring and nothing new to learn.
Modern logistics - an executive summary.......2007-02-08
After reading various textbooks on logistics, quantitative analysis and strategy, this book was very refreshing, in large part from the fact that it is a short and non-technical book. The title of my review says it all, this book is summary for busy people wanting to get som insights into what is going on in logistics and organizational theory . I got through the book in two readings, which is a very valuable aspect for busy people.
Still, despite being brief, it touches on most important aspects, and points you to further areas of importance if what you read here makes you want to change things in your organization.
So: Not technical, easy read, 4 stars instead of 5 because it is too brief to be truly useful for those that actually want to learn the subject-matter.
PS: The printing I recieved was a defect, pages 247 to 278 missing (Replaced by duplicate pages 215-246), ust watch out for that.
Excellent Advanced SCM Book - Repost.......2007-01-05
This is a wonderful book and introduces the practioner to some of the frontiers of strategically driven service response logistics. In other words how to design, deploy and organize integrated SCM for corporate strategic reasons, not just for functional cost control. Probably one of three key books for understanding the frontiers and highly recommended.
Key is the process, customer value and system integration perspectives threaded throughout but particularly in the last several chapters. The chaper on service response logistics is worth the price of the book.
As a practioner dealing with advanced SCM I found this very worthwhile and found myself wishing I'd written it. If you are relatively new to the field you need a decent baseline grounding and Stock & Lambert's book on 'Strateigc Logistics' is a perfect complement. To move slightly higher up the food chain get the recent compilation of HBR articles called 'Managing the Value Chain'. Together the three make a perfect bookshelf set for any practioner, student or corporate executive who needs to understand what integrated logistics, SCM or the future of e-business might be doing to your career or your firm's competitive prospects !
Easy to read, theorethically strong and practical enough.......2006-03-03
After reading many books about logistics and supply chain issues, this third edition adds value to the field.
The author confirms his visionary approach and provides new thinking on supply chain risk and resilience. Not only agility is now more elaborated and explained as an important logistics strategy together with leaness, but also, hybrid strategies are proposed and practical cases are developed.
As always, the author ends with a view to the future and introduce the readers in the ever challenging thoughs of business transformations.
I Need It Yesterday .......2005-06-12
At first glance this is a book that is going to scare off the vast number of readers. Unless you are in this field or this is part of your daily job, why would you read this book. I submit that most managers today need to have a basic understanding of this process, which is why I read this book. Overall I came to the book with no real understanding of the topic nor had I ever read a book along these lines before. I found the book to be a nice and understandable overview of the topic. I did find it to be a bit more detailed then I was looking for, but I understand that the book was not necessarily meant for a reader such as myself.
I think what interested me most was that I used to think of this topic as just a line of trucks coming into the plant so to speak. The book brings out that supply chains are really complex networks with many moving parts. Due to the increased out sourcing and off shoring, the complexity of these chains has grown. With this complexity comes even more of a need for pro-active coordination within the network. This is the reason the book and concepts are important. Overall I enjoyed the book. Sure it had more detail then I wanted, but I assume that a seasoned professional in this line of work needs that detail. I also found the book to be, at times, a bit dry, but I attribute this to my lack of real depth in the area. If you are looking for something in this subject I think this is a good starting point.

Excellent parody.......2002-11-11
If you have ever seen the works of Scottish "nature artist" Andy Goldsworthy, or if you have seen the recent documentary about his work, "Rivers and Tides," you should have this book. I recently was given "Dog Works" for my birthday, from someone who'd seen that film and knew that I'd seen it. As soon as I saw the cover, I knew the book was a parody, so I was surprised when I read the reviews here, since so many people apparently took this book seriously or, worse yet, thought it was a hoax. But the parody is subtly done, so maybe I shouldn't be so surprised. I suggest those people do a search online for Goldsworthy's works, or check out the book "Andy Goldsworthy: A Collaboration With Nature" (1990), available on amazon.com. Or go to see the documentary film "Rivers and Tides," showing Scottish artist Goldsworthy at work, using materials found in natural settings to create works of art in those same settings. The title of the film refers to the settings for many of the artist's works - so similar to the settings of the canine constructions in "Dog Works."
Have a little faith !.......2002-06-04
So many disbelievers out there! I feel so sorry for you: no magic left in your dull and predictable worlds? Of course this book is on the level. While my dog Ernestine does not build art pieces as such, she's a pretty good cook and a crack shot. So why not dog artists? The review of dog art is a little species-centric, however. Most of the dog artists I know use faecies or urine to construct art, or engage in performance pieces: "Rooting The Leg"; and "Licking The Balls" spring to mind. Dog culture can be appreciated by humans but is not the SAME as human cuture. So a little less chauvanism please Ms Mathison!
Equal time for cats!.......2002-04-19
Equal time for cats, please! My cats build constructions just
like dogs do. Little piles of toy mousies placed in a circle,
little piles of trophies laid in spots around my bedroom----
I think both dogs and cats make constructions. Partly they do it out of boredom, more importantly, they do it as trophies.
And to please their owner by leaving their "hunted" items for the
m to find. And let's not forget they do it out of fun, too.
Or to leave a message for other doggies to see.......fun book.
It's just fun.......2001-12-11
I enjoyed this book and have bought it as a gift. It's a fun book and I don't care if the dogs really built the works listed or if someone decided it would be fun to pretend that they did. As a dog owner, I know that dogs can do some funny little things, like lining up chew toys in a special order and it piqued my imagination that perhaps the little things I've seen mine do mean that dogs are not too far off from creating something bigger that has meaning to them. Don't let the issue of hoax vs real keep you from enjoying this book.
Funny, but was it intended to be, or just to make money?.......2001-04-18
I don't have much of a sense of humor for hoaxes, but I did have a few laughs with the people I showed this book to. The most interesting thing about the book is that it does not have the immediate appearance of being a joke. The sense of humor is so very dry that the tone seems utterly sincere throughout, and the book did fool one professional reviewer at Dog World magazine who should have known better.
What I find odd is that there are people who actually believe the New Age sort of nonsense that is the foundation of this hoax - thought transference, star music, racial memory, and so on - and I have to wonder if the author is poking fun at them or is one of them who uses this nonsense to try to make a hoax that will be believable to at least some poor souls.
This reminded me of the humor of J. K. Rowling in the Harry Potter books, where there is an overt tongue-in-cheek poking fun at "magic," but where there seems to be a deeper layer of actual occult belief. The author of "Dog Works" does seem to know her stuff. Anyway, now I see why Ms. Rowling finds "magic" funny. This book is funny in the same way.

Book Description
The first part of the book develops a battery of scientifically based tools to aid the reconstruction of biblical Dead Sea Scrolls, which, when applied together, substantially improve the quality of reconstruction attainable. The focus then moves to the important non-masoretic but fragmentary biblical scroll, 4QSam(a), for which sixty-two new fragment identifications and an analysis of the character of the scroll are presented. Based upon this, a detailed reconstruction of the 4QSam(a) fragments of 2 Samuel is undertaken, revealing 55% more deviations from the Masoretic text than had previously been identified. The effectiveness of the new method is thus demonstrated. Data concerning the support of key Hebrew and Greek witnesses provides a valuable foundation for the study of the history and development of the biblical text.
Book Description
Spanning 40 years and including 100 films, Oliver Reed's career began with Hammer Horror films but soon developed into international stardom. In May 1999 he died while making another film ? the hit blockbuster Gladiator. During his life, he became equally well-known for his off-screen exploits and blunt opinions but Cliff Goodwin reveals another side to this complex man, using material from first-hand interviews with Reed's family, friends and colleagues, together with never-before-seen photographs. Contains first-hand interviews with some of Reed's family, friends and colleagues, plus photographs from the family album Gladiator, Reed's last film, was dedicated to him and his performance was well reviewed by the critics.
Customer Reviews:
Workmanlike Bio.......2003-11-13
For any avid Oliver Reed fan, this book doesn't contain anything new. However, for the cinema fan who admired Ollie's filmwork, it's a good intro to his life. When Ollie died, I was surprised to see that those of us in the American film industry viewed him more as a god of cinema, whereas the Brits viewed him as a god of debauchery. Since this book was written for the British audience, it focuses more on Reed's flamboyant side, but then Ollie was a one-of-a-kind rogue. Compared to the hypocritical stars of today, Ollie stands out as a true individual with a set standard of living. A great man, but the true story is still being written.
Outta here.......2003-04-29
Although the writing and story in general did not flow particularly well and it seemed to be a bit jerky with respect to the sequence of events, just reading about the sheer audacity, madness, debauchery, depravity, and wickedness of Oliver Reed's life makes for an adventure well worth [the money]. The book in itself is not, nor will it ever be recognized as a literary pinnacle, however as a means to record several snap shots in the life of Oliver Reed, it is truly remarkable as simply a documentary writ of a life which was full of excess. This is the story of which legends are made, however despicable the behavior, and regardless of how one apply there respective terms of morals, no one remembers mediocrity or exemplary behavior. However, one seldom forgets tossing a chair through the pub window, or helping your friend off the side of a balcony, sexual advances and behavior of which most people fantasize about. In the great dichotomy of life one also is privy to a man who maintained his personal and emotional loyalty to friends and family of which few in this world can demonstrate, albeit left of center.
Absolutely brilliant!!

Book Description
Edward Casey, an underfed, under-sized and semi-literate Irish Cockney from Canning Town, was no war hero. Even so, his account of four years of war service with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers is a remarkable chronicle, revealing his personal and sexual insecurities, his remarkable experience of Irish unrest during periods of training and leave, and his excitement as a military tourist in France, Salonica and Malta.
The memoir was written in 1980, six decades after his departure for New Zealand, yet retains a strong Cockney flavor. The editor has selected the chapters with the greatest interest for Irish readers, placing Casey’s story in the broader context of the Great War and its sometimes devastating psychological consequences.
